I don't like Sense too much, but It seems that are very stable and fast ROMs based on it. You can try Fallout by lowveld that is now on version 5.0.0 and is very stable and usable. Else you can try Desire XS that seems to be very smooth and extremely fast. My advise is to try Fallout, that is more stable and easier to flash.
Obviously don't forget to follow CAREFULLY the flashing instructions and, if you're not unlocked, to read CAREFULLY all the guides on this index (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1146601) BEFORE doing anything.
Happy flashing!

Probably, if not you can oc. A bit to get rid of the lag. I'd recommend 1.2 to start and see how it goes

True, which is why i recommend 1.2 as it runs most things quite happily including games like asphalt 7 and batman etc. Any more and you do run a huge risk

If you're just going to ask for the best ROM then my suggestion is that you read the threads due each ROM, pick a few that you like the look of, and install them to try.
No ICS or JB ROMs are totally bug free, or certainly weren't last time I looked through them.
As for gaming, you need to remember that the modern games like GTA are designed for quad-core devices, so the DS may well struggle.
The best rom for saga is Stock sense 2.1...

Ive always found ICS slow on my desire s no matter what rom i use. The fastest and most stable rom ive ever used was the official MIUI GB rom. Everything worked 100%, battery is brilliant, and never have any issues. JB seems to run a lot more smoother than ICS on my desire s especially with this miui zero rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2016648 but is does have a few bugs.
Hey,
Iam Using Sabsa Prime 10.0 for the desire s.
I can say that this is a Very Fast rom. I've had slowdown issieu's too that's why i got my phone rooted.
My first rom is ICE DS 6.5 it's 5x better than Stock official ics.
Sense slows everything down... if you want a mad rom choose MIU or CM7/10

Looking to get a few opinions from ppl that flash multiple roms to their devices. Looking for something that is stable, not overclocked, and has the least amount of reported issues. Thanks in advance!!
i am currently using insertcoin 4.6.1 and it is very stable and fast also without overclocking it
Android Revolution HD is great, very fast, very stable and I've had no issues so far.
The Android Revolution HD ICS is a really good ROM. I just recently flashed it and love it. It's fast and stable. I performed the benchmark test with the ROM and came up around 2900-3000 compared to the previous 1900s.
I will second Insertcoin. The only issue is the inbuilt WiFi tether being broken, but I believe that is an issue with ALL current ICS roms. Barnacle works wonders.
Flashing Android revolution as we speak.. I thought it was supposed to give an option to select 1.2 or 1.5?
InsertCoin and ARHD are both extremely popular options. My suggestion is to try them both and see which one works best for you. Give each one a few days to get the kinks worked out and always make sure you do a full backup and Super Wipe every time you change ROMs!

I had the same thoughts as you when I was using Clockwork Mod to flash roms, it never asked anything about the install. Now, I use Touch Recovery and I have yess/no options when I flash roms now
Its really difficult to find a fully compatible ROM for your phone, as what happen to mine tried the popular one which i got a lot of issues some people not, so I tried other. Every ROM's claiming fast/stable. To be fair you can to try each for yourself which I did and happy with what i have now. Different people have thier own choices depends on what their need. Go out and explore there now 44+ ROMS you can narrow down which is more popular and depends on their feedbacks. Goodluck.
If you would like to try non-sense I recommend miui v4 or either CM9 kang. I've had zero issues with either.

Yeah, it will ask you but only if you have installed 4Ext recovery instead of clock work mod. In my experience 4Ext is a much more complete recovery.

insertcoin rom is the best for me
I've been running Android Revolution HD 5.3 since January. This was my first experience with a non-stock android device as I bought the device configured in that way. I was very happy with it, but couldn't get HTC Sync to transfer my contacts and found it a little laggy, other then that it was great. The best advice I was given to fix my issue was to reload/update the ROM. Mike actually uploaded his latest version 6.4.0 while I was downloading 6.3.1 so I scrapped that and went with 6.4.0 since it was based on the Final HTC RUU 3.32.401.3.
Its only been a day so its not much of a test, but so far its way better and faster then the old ROM even when it was fresh. HTC sync worked flawlessly. the response time is as close to instant as you can get. You need to use 4ext recovery to have the option to use the 1.5Ghz kernel or load the Sony Bravia engine. I chose both options and have seen no issues, only improvements.
Like everyone said its really your taste so try out a few varieties, just remember to superwipe between them else you might find bugs that aren't really an issue with the ROM but because you didn't clear all the old data.
All the best and have fun.

Yes you need to change cid, yes you can change back if needed. Try out a few roms, see what you like they all are really great. It's just a matter of personal preference. I'm not understanding what you mean by Rom with ota. Over the air Rom? Or do you
Mean a Rom like the ota update? If so, yes there is. Hope this helps

You can get s-off with the juopunutbear method. Which now does not need the htc dev-off, so htc does not know you are tinkering with your phone.
Returning your phone completely to stock can be done, but from what i've read it can be tricky as you must become S-ON again. (however, there is a unbrickable team here).
There is a way to flash with S-ON but it requires HTC DEV unlock, and for you to manually flash the boot.img, and keep the stock kernel. A noob myself i went for the whole S-OFF, lets bring it on experience.
From what I read on a local forum in my country, Ordroid gives you the sense 4 experience. And the developer regularly updates his / her rom.
Then again there is sense 4 from Baadnewz (insertcoin) and many more. A popular sense 3.6 rom is ARHD.
You can flash different kernels to increase your battery life.
As for the vanilla ICS, you can either go for CM9 (respect to Vorbeth) or the AOKP. The latter is based on the cm9 nightlies (i believe). I run such a rom. I love the vanilla looks and the added tweaks.
However, I believe recent nighlies have worse battery life. And there is an audio routing issue. For full reliability you might consisder those sense.
what's vanilla and aokp?
Please help?

Fallout (not 100%, missing wifi tethering, but every single other thing works).

try it yourself.
Don't let other ppl's preference determine what suites you, if I ever did that then i would be stucked at rom A, and i wouldnt even bother to try rom B.
Even though i read that there were many issue with rom C i still tried it out, and the issues they mention didn't appear in my phone. So my current rom is now rom D.
So then rom B had an update, so i back-up my current rom then restore rom B then updated it. I didnt like it so i went on to try rom E which was one of the lattest developement.
Take ur time to try it all, because once u tried everything u will get bored as i am now and just waiting for the lastest update to come.

I'm pretty conservative when it comes to changing ROMs.
I know that CyanogenMod 7 comes with integrated OpenVPN and WiFi tethering if I recall correctly. I consider these two features as quite desirable. I assume that Endymion and Reaper have that too as they are based on CM7, right? Apparently, Reaper is not based on the stable CM 7.2 release but then, on the other hand, it has been advocated as very stable. So, why has the developer then promised a final release?
I'm scared of losing my apps and data when changing ROMs. What ways do you guys use to ensure that your can restore everything to working order after you've flashed your new ROM?

yes, perfectly good enough. You just won't have the batch function. But it's easy to use and has a simple ui. I will say this though, if your going to be flashing roms regularly then it is more than worth paying for the full app, I paid for tb and Rom manager on the day I unlocked my bootloader, and haven't once thought that maybe I shouldn't have

Well, in that case, stock Rom suits best for u. IMHO, the loveliest part of Rom developing is that someone found issues and someone trying to fix it. That's what Android Dev really is. I don't agree with that.
I had to disable the SIM-code, because every couple of days, my HTC crashed and Restarted.
(if you don't know that, you don't get call's because of the simcard-code).
That was the reason I bought a new smartphone (xperia U).
Since the HTC was in my desk-drawer, I began to experiment with rooting/changing ROM
Now I have fall-out for 2 weeks now, and my phone hasn't crashed 1 time.
So for me, custom ROMS are more stable than the stock one. (and faster, smoother, ...)
It just feels like a whole new phone.
Anybody knows witch ROM is the best for Battery Life ?

Hello guys,
first of all, sorry about opening a new thread about this, but I cant reply in developer threads, since I dont have 10 posts, and Im not going to spam just to get it, so here we go:
- I am an android app developer
- I do test apps on this Desire S, just to have a look how they work on ICS
- this is my private phone as well
- I neither rooted a phone on my own, nor flashed a rom(except the official Desire S RUU thingie, but that is just pressing next etc)
- for me, stability > all, including speed, and battery life
- except the speed of the official ICS, I like the stock rom just how it is
Im getting tired of how slow the official ICS upgrade can be on my Desire S, tho I can live with it, but if I can have the same, or maybe even better stability, while gaining performance, why wouldn't I change? My question is: should I upgrade with a custom rom, given the previous infos about my preferences? I was looking 2 roms, which got me for the first:
- ICE DS
- Fallout Evolution
I would prefer Sense 3.6, so ICE DS sounds better, but I am open for Sense 4.0 as well.
So once more, what do you think, should I upgrade? Will the performance significantly increase? Will the stability remains the same(at least)? In case you say I should, which one of the previous roms would you recommend? Or any other rom? And what is the exact process, what I should do? Just few words will do, I can manage to look up guides/tutorials, just show me the path.
Thanks in advance, cheers
You may try Ice Cream Saga. As its currently the only rom as of now to be based on the official ics for the desire s, afaik.
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda app-developers app
i got a ruu for the desire s from the htc dev center you just have to search there site for it but i ran it on an unmodified desire s that was on its original o2 rom and it worked so i have now got Android 4.0.4 and sense 3.6 and ive found it stable and more then fast enough for me but i dont do a lot of gaming. give it a try it might work and its official but i cant promise ya it will work for ya tho
Little misunderstanding there, I do use the stock ICS for Desire S, what I downloaded from HTCdev, the ruu one. So yea, my question was, is it worth to change for one of the custom roms, mentioned already, but I will provide links now, just to make sure this time:
- ICE DS ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1567715 )
- Fallout Evolution ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1679125 )
Once more, the question is: I use the RUU ICS upgrade from HTCdev already, so I have ICS already, but, is it worth to change to ICE DS or Fallout Evolution? Is it as stable as the stock rom, and is it faster? Thanks!
bump
I think the latest version of ice_ds is good, Fallout is very stable and quite fast, sabsa prime is faster, but possibly less stable, ice cream saga is based on the official ruu with only performance tweaks.
It's hard to say what would work best for you, I think you would have to try 2 or 3 and then decide. I do think it would be worth it, especially as having a custom recovery installed allows you to make complete backups of the current Rom, that can be restored if you try something different and don't like it.
---------- Post added at 10:41 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:29 PM ----------
Process:
Unlock bootloader,
Install custom recovery
Now you can backup, restore, flash custom Rom etc. in recovery.
(something optional worth considering: downgrading hboot to attain s-off, you'll see why that might make sense )
Guides and information about the above steps should be easily found in the forum.
Thanks, I guess it is testing time then

1) should i download the 10 free ea games before updating or after?
2) how do i use a music file from the sd card as a ringtone?
Welcome Night Wing!
First I would recommend updating to ICS before installing any other apps.
Second, in whatever music app you use, long press on a song and you should get an option to select it as your ringtone.
Welcome to the club. Be sure to read all the stickies mate!
Or you can drop it in the Ringtones folder on your sdcard... reboot, and you should see it in the ringtones selection in Settings.
You might have to trim it down if it's a big audio file.. not sure

I updated to ICS (OTA) the day it was released and it was nothing but trouble for me (I have a thread about it). After about a month of dealing with issues AT&T sent me a replacement phone. It's gingerbread and I'm leaving it that way.
That is my personal experience though, I'm sure there are others that have had success or I wouldn't think the update would still be available. If you do update, I'd be very curious to hear about your results.
