[q] i cant open cwm - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

`i recently reverted my phone (nexus s 4g) to stock 4.0.4 so i could get the 4.1.1 update OTA
i mange to install the root.zip file with the one-click-root program i used to use
but after that when i place roms on my phone and try to install them via clockwork recovery i get an error screen (the android guy with a red triangle). it wont let me go into recovery at all
the phone works fine besides that .
also if i revert back to 4.0.4 stock i can root my phone and open recovery perfectly fine
can anyone tell me what what my problem is ?
and can someone tell me if its even possible to root a stock nexus s 4g running jellybean?

Try pushing another recovery. Make sure to have an unlocked bootloader and then push a new recovery. The red triangle indicates that there is a stock recovery. Go into the Dev section there is a thread with all recoveries

This simply means that you do not have any custom recovery installed, follow this guide by me. If you have any queries, post 'em there :good:

[Q] [GT-i9020]Does anyone have a working root method for NS i9020 with 2.3.4 stock?

I am slowly being driven insane trying to find a root method that works and wont brick my phone. Im running the UK vesion of the NS, the i9020 (Not A/T/some other variation). All the root methods seem to be pointing to other variants and Ive already wiped my phone twice trying to get this done.
Can someone provide a link that is known to work with 2.3.4 on the original i9020 NS? My bootloader is already unlocked. Im completely confused with all the different versions of CWM available, most of which dont work, just leave my phone stuck in the CWM recovery console when rebooted and wont run Android.
Thanks
S
go to www.unlockr.com and check out the how to root the nexus s. there is a video plus written instructions on how to unlock the bootloader (skip this part), install a custom recovery, and root the device. i just got a i9020a (rogers in toronto) and it worked perfect (once i installed the correct drivers). his videos are always good

Assuming stock:
Download su (http://bit.ly/su2361ef) and put it in the root of your NS's usb storage.
Download CWM recovery (http://mirror.sea.tdrevolution.net/cm/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.4-crespo.img).
Run 'fastboot boot recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.4-crespo.img'.
Apply su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip and reboot.
Install Superuser from Market. You are now rooted.
Optional: Flash CWM recovery either manually or through ROM manager (if you want a custom recovery as well).

That's just the stock recovery, not much you can do from it and yes everyone can access it unless they are rooted and have a custom recovery.
I thought from there you could flash cwm or a rom? Read somewhere you would have to rename the file as update for it to work.
@blue300 i think that only works with official roms like stock samsung i believe i tried that with my epic and it would not boot but when i did it via stock it booted up fine...

[Solved] Rooting nexus s GT19023 stock ICS 4.04? [/Solved]

Hello to all respected members
i have a problem... i read all threads and tutorials on rooting nexus s GT19023 but still no success ...
i bought this phone yesterday so I'm new to this... hope someone kind will explain the details to me ...
bootloader status says : unlocked
but still no root on 4.04
clockmod recovery is installed... so another question
can i install custom rom using clockmod recovery without root access? if possible, then after installing custom ICS rom it will then be rooted>?
thanks in advance for all those who took time in helping me root ICS 4.04 stock rom... i really need root access on this rom... i hope i can install custom rom with cm recovery then have root with custom rom
since im new to this, please suggest the best rom and kernel to use i'm open to suggestions
thanks
if you want your phone rooted, flash this in CWM:
http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
then, in app drawer should has Superuser icon.
In other way, if you flash custom rom, it's already rooted, so you don't have to flash that file above again...
thanks savantist ... i flashed custom rom and its working awesome... rooted + kernel... thanks for the reply thread is solved
I'm about to root my nexus s for the first time. I'm running Android 4.04. Quick nooby question..will I lose the contacts n data on my phone memory if I root by flashing that superuser file with CWM recovery..If yes then is there a way to create a NAND backup prior to rooting my device.
Thanks a lot for putting up with my nooby question. Pls help!!!

Flash CWM from fastboot
http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-crespo.img
Place the ClockworkMod Recovery Image in the same folder as fastboot (the /tools folder with the Android SDK folder). Power the Nexus S down, and hold Volume Up & the Power button until booted into the bootloader. Connect the Nexus S to the computer via USB. On the computer, open terminal and run:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-crespo.img
The ClockworkMod Recovery should now be installed on the Nexus S.
After that boot into recovery using volume up + power button, then selecting recovery. Now in CWM flash
http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
Reboot and you have root again.
PRAISE the lord! I have been to 7 different sites and followed their instructions to the letter and no ROOT.... I finally found this post and the signed Super user did the trick THANKS SO MUCH!
FINALLY!

Andoid 4.0.4 update not installing on rooted Nexus S 3G

This is what I get from Google.
Android System Update 4.0.4
Downloaded and verified .............. 128.6 MB
This system update for your Nexus S brings you the latest version of Android ( 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich ) with performance improvements, increased stability and bug fixes.
I will click install now, it starts installing and then I get the android warning sign and the phone freezs. I have to take the battery out to get it out of the frozen state.
The question is I have rooted my Nexus S 3G. Is it the rooting which is hindering the updating ? Any solutions ?
Help please .
your likley using clockworkmod recovery, to install OTA update you need to use stock recovery,
if your rooted why not install a rooted 4.0.4 rom?

The problem is I followed youtube instruction video to root my phone without a clue of what I was doing. When I get the update notice I get "Install Now " "Install Later" prompt and I select " Install Now " and like I mentioned above it fails and freezes.

Found why the install fails .
Update: It looks like updates on Nexus devices without SD cards can not be performed manually unless you either root or use a custom recovery, like CWM - otherwise, you'll get the errors many of you are seeing. It seems to be happening because the OTA files check whether they're located in /cache, which isn't writable unless you root or receive a proper OTA. JBQ himself confirmed it, but said it wasn't on purpose. The preferred solution seems to be using a custom recovery, then installing the above update. Galaxy Nexus has a similar problem, so you're not alone.

I would advise against restoring stock recovery via CWM What is it you need the stock one for? You can get the stock one back but if you plan to keep root or get root CWM atm is only way to get it so in the end CWM will need to be put back on if you need root.... But what are you trying to do?
Read dev thread, the answer is there if you want it.

Why don't you just flash 4.1.1 w/Odin? You seem to be going out of your way to make it harder than it should be. Don't know what else to tell you.

My work around for this is the leave the stock recovery, a little pain each time I need to use CWM, but with Triangle away and stock I get OTA updates.
You don,t understand me !
I mean cwm do not allow me to flash update.zip so i want a stock recovery file...
You dont understand them. Flash a stock rom using odin. Or better yet, flash the stock rom you wanted in the first place using odin. If you have cwm right now its likely you are rooted correct? If you are, have you deleted any system apps? If you have the update wouldn't go through anyway. If you are on a custom rom it won't go through anyway. Just use odin and be done with it.

What is the stock version OS for this? I seem to find many answers. Some places list it as 4.0.3, and others list it as 4.0.x or 4.0.?...
Last night I made the horrible choice to update the OS from the stock. Something I had been putting off for months. After I updated it, the system said I had 4.0.3, and there were noticeable changes (the sound that plays when booting up, the infamous 'water drop' sound, the horrible white-washing of the keyboard and sound controls, etc.) Before I decide to try this ROM/Root-ing stuff, I decided to keep updating and see if there were new changes that updated the things I didn't like. No luck. All the things I hate are still present... Current version as reported by the tablet "About device" in settings says 4.1.1 with Kernel 3.0.31-523998 and Build number JRO03C.P5113UECLK7.
I am interested in trying the ROM/Root-ing. But I can't find a solid reference to what version of ICS this came with (unit was purchased in July 2012). The box and every other printed document I could find simply says "Adroid 4.0" or "ICS 4.0", and does not tell me if it is 4.0.3 or 4.0.x or whatever.
I want my normal bootup sound to play. I want these white-washed keyboards and other controls out of here! And for the love of anything, this water drop sound needs to take a dirt nap.
I suppose I would also be happy with anyone who can tell me how to get back the normal dark keyboard and other visuals and/or change the water drop sound back to the simple 'click' that was there before. Although I have already searched for this option and I have not come across these solutions (outside of ROMing and changing the .ogg files around).
ANY help or directions will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance,
capnflummox
The samsung keyboard is the same in all stock firmware for p51xx.
Stock firmware can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1704668
If you have root and su, bring up a shell and execute
# sh /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
That should restore the stock recovery from the backup partition (the active recovery is in /dev/block/mmcblk0p6 and the backup is installed on p5).
(That normally gets invoked by init.rc at each boot, but CWM marks it as no-execute to keep it from running.)
Almost what I need I think

So this is if you have root, etc. I have a GT-P5113 from a friend. It tried to update and got hung like so many others. My question is, at the fail screen, what do I do to be able to get into Recovery or download mode so I can get this tablet back to life? I have tried everything I can find on the subject...not a lot out there for my situation. Please help!
Thanks
