Before anybody says to use the search function, I've been looking through the general topics non-stop for one that applies to my situation, and either it slipped through the cracks (likely) or it doesn't exist (not likely).
Basically, my tablet is rooted and unlocked, and I'm on ICS; the first one that had face unlock in it. I'd really like to update my tab to JB, but I need to be pointed toward directions for updating a rooted and unlocked tab. But on top of that, I also need recent instructions, because I know that earlier attempts at getting this thing updated have resulted in lots of bricked tabs.
If anybody could tell me if it's possible to update my tablet to JB right now, I'd appreciate it, and if someone has figured out how to do it, can you please point me toward that thread? I'd really appreciate it.

I'm in the same configuration, custom-ics-rom with twrp recovery on unlocked device.
I believe the first thing to do is enabling NVFLASH, that will make things safer also in the worst cases.
I did that and now hopefully I have an unbrickable device.
I'm a bit confused on how to go forward, I know that there are two versions of twrp, maybe I should install the JB version, booting inside it and then flash the downloaded JB update from ASUS site, or use the twrp for ICS for flashing and after that install the JB version ?
Anyone knows what is the correct option ?

Keep ICS, as JB will cause much trouble especially if you are rooted, trying to OC and is generally slowein my opinion
I prefer to try it anyway, tomorrow I will try flashing, after all if something will go wrong I should be able to recover with nvflash.

Thank you, Grim. That's disappointing to hear about JB, but if you think that my current build is better than that (which makes sense considering I've seen at least one thread about downgrading from JB to ICS), then I will keep my tab on ICS for now, and thank you for your input, I appreciate it.

If you have twrp recovery, can't you download the jb ROM from the Asus site for your region and flash it in? I'm unlocked and that's how I upgraded one version of jb to another, but my ICS to jb was ota, so in your case I can't speak from experience. There is a full upgrade, and root guide in the general section.

I just managed to do what you re looking to achieve.
I m pretty noob so it tok me a whole day to figure it out.
So first download jb update on asus website (pick the right one for ur type of tf300)
Flash it through adb
At that point i got jb installation working but bootloop
So i flashed jb version of twrp (adb)
I then went in recovery and flashed clean rom 2.5 which worked flawlessly
Just for the fun i did factory reset afetrwards and stock jb eventually launched right

I successfully installed jb following the guide on this site, the only thing that was not working was the flashing of the stock rom, neither given options worked (fastboot flash recovery or fastboot flash system) , I discovered that our eepad has a partition nmed staging used for firmware installs. I then flashed with
fastboot flash staging blolb
and all went good.
Btw I find the JB better than ics, more responsive and smoother, and also if it is not yet overcooked.
Hi guys,
I've searched everywhere and can't get a definitive answer on this so here goes -
I'm a noob when it comes to Android, having recently defected from being an Apple Disciple (I got hacked off with iTunes and bored in general with the Daycare Centre which is iOS) and have recently acquired an Acer A700 tablet.
I have installed the JB update OTA and everything is working fine and am chomping at the bit to get it booted, but most of the posts I have read regarding unlocking the bootloader and rooting it relate to ICS.
My questions are -
Does the bootloader process apply regardless of Firmware? (Are there different versions for different Firmwares)
Can anyone point me in the direction of a decent tutorial on how to do this?
What happens regarding a future update? Do I have to revert back to stock and update from there or can i jump from one ROM to another? (I'm assuming that I can't use the OTA updates any more)
Sorry for the long OP and thanks in advance for your answers.

No problem. Seeing you are on JB, then you have a JB bootloader.
You need to go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1953917
And download Vorbeths easyroot2.0. It's for the 700.
You have to unlock your bootloader first, which shouldn't be an issue for you. Easy instructions for that.
Then download his package to a folder on your PC. (not sure, but you may have to download each file individually) Open a command window (shift & right mouse click) and type in whatever his instructions say. Should be painless.
Make sure USB Debugging is turned on first in your tablet (Settings/Developer Options/USB Debugging), and make sure you have the Acer Drivers installed on your PC.
Then connect, wait 30 seconds, and run his batch file.
You should be ok.
MD
Oh yes, one more thing, once you unlock your bootloader, chances are you will not be able to get OTA. And the only way to re-lock the bootloader is to install a stock rom.
Thanks!
Thanks for the reply. I am now the owner of a fully rooted A700!
Had a few issues during unlocking the bootloader. That thing timeouts quick! Also, didn't realise you had to run the .bat file while the tablet was on the Bootloader USB protocol screen. I thought you had to wait until it booted fully into JB.
Anyway, took the plunge and thanks again for your help.

No problem. I thought I mentioned it timed out in about 5 seconds These days I don't remember much
Yeah, I haven't looked at Vorbeth's script, so I don't know which screen he launches it from. With mine for the 701, you can be when the tab is running normal. No difference in the end result though
Happy Hunting!

One last question - do I have to install Clockwork Recovery for re-flashing the stock images or is it just a case of renaming it update. zip and putting it on an SD Card? Any chance you can point me in the right direction of the most recent/stable build? Is it easy to install?
Thanks again.

Well, this is a trouble spot.
If you wish to install a custom rom, then you will need to install CWM. The most recent version.
If you want to try your luck at installing a stock rom, my opinion, is to leave the stock recovery inplace. I haven't had luck in installing stock update.zips, as Acer has made them very specific. So I can't be much help to you in that.
However, you can always flash back to CWM or a stock JB recovery pretty easy. Personally, unless you plan on flashing a custom, I would just leave the stock recovery.
MD
Sometimes "leaked" update appear here in the forums. They are unofficial. And you never know if they improve things, or make things worse. So be careful.

So, just for future reference, how would I go about re-flashing the stock image? I'm assuming it's saved on the tablet in a separate partition?
I've decided to stick with the stock rooted ROM but would like to know how to re-flash for when Key Lime Pie and future updates are released.
And, seeing as how you haven't steered me wrong so far, I though I'd pick your brains one last time.
Hope you don't mind!
Hey guys,
I sent my device to Asus a couple of days ago for repairs.
Asus did a great job on repairing my screen, but... um..
they have undone my root access and they've also relocked my bootloader, I think, although I can't get any OTAs.
Original question was:
What can I do to get my root again, because the scripts of sparky's tool don't seem to work anymore...
Sorry for this noobish question, but I swear that this has never happened to me before (and I have unlocked and rooted numerous devices)
What kind of sorcery is going on?!

Then I found the answer thanks to these amazing guys answering and trying to help.
It's a strange method, but it woudn't work otherwise:
I had to unlock the device (still on that very first stock JB rom).
Then, I flashed CWM through fastboot. Have a look here. However, do not forget: in this thread the OP referenced to an unofficial CWM. Go to the TF700 Android Development page and download the official CWM in stead.
After that I flashed a CWM-suitable SuperSU.zip (flashable) which made me have whereas it was impossible with any other method! (works through TWRP as well, for those that only have the unable to root problem )
Then, I flashed TWRP (but that's just a question of preferences, I guess) => This is no obligatory step of course!
There you go, for anyone who has/will have the same issues as me: follow these steps and let me know if it worked for you!
Have fun flashing Custom Roms/Kernels and/or recoveries again!
It might seem complicated, but it really isn't.
Good uck to those who follow(ed) my path

I'd like to get it back to CR asap, since I really like that ROM, but noone has helped be yet
That is, until you arrived!
Ah
If we can get you successfully unlocked then the flashing can begin.
Have you tried unlocking via the Asus unlock .apk?
Seem as tho some tab owners have had problems with the Asus unlock tool.
I actually have the exact same problem.
Tablet back from screen repairs and now my root is gone, clean JB is installed and I can't seem to unlock (I wasn't unlocked before though).
I tried unlocking within the newest firmware with the ASUS Unlock app, failed with the "Unknown error occured, this could be a network problem".
Then I decided to atleast fix me root so I downgraded to .30 (ICS) and RootDebugFS fixed my root access.
Still my unlocking fails.
My serial is still the same btw.

My own experience included unlocking as a first step.
The reason was that I found it ultimately easier to install the CWM recovery thru ADB.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32293050&postcount=1 <<<< The confusing guide is here.
After some study then trial we were successful!
Are you familiar with fastboot or opening a terminal (DOS like cmd window) on the PC?
ADB (Android Development Bridge) is a command prompt that will speak to the tablet thru a USB connection.
All of this is available with Androids platform tools.
I keep a tools folder on my PCs desktop so I don't have to search for it. (Platform tools can be downloaded)
I know all this is somewhat intimidating on first encounter...hopefully we can walk thru and get things up and loaded.

It's not the first time I root (and/or) unlock a bootloader. It's just that now, those super easy root command methods don't work anymore. I have done completely manual rooting in the past, but I am not sure that will work either.
Besides, I got adb running before on my Infinity, but I'll make sure to downgrade to ICS first before doing anything else.
Here's what I am going to do:
1) downgrade to .30
2) try to root (with or without sparky's tool )
3) unlock bootloader (although I'm not sure if that'll work, judging from the comment of the Dutchman above)
I'll let you know in this thread if it worked or not.
My prediction: root will work, unlocking bootloader won't, since it's already been unlocked one and therefore my serial number is already in their database!
So i got my infinity like 2 weeks ago. The first thing i tried to do was to root it. I plugged in my device, installed drivers and checked unknown sources and usb debugging. I opened debugfs and tried to root my device but it suddenly closes. Whats likely to be the problem. And no i dont have asus sync installed.
P.S i returned my infinity on amazon as there was a hardware problem. Ill get the new one in a couple of days.
Thanks in advance.
Good luck with trying to get it unlocked (again)! If it doesn't work out in the end, you might want to drop Gary Key a line. Even if he is currently serving the USA himself, he might give you a pointer or a contact inside ASUS' support division. It's likely this is a "serial number in database" issue -- I'd like to believe that with some handiwork, this should be relatively simple issue to tackle, IF the engineers have access to that database at all. (With only Gary's answers to go on, I'd say ASUS HQ seems to keep its cards close to the chest.)
There's no way around the bootloader checking the staging partitions, right? Damn shame we can't just flash to it directly, ODIN style (which admittedly was not a perfect solution, but it is better than being locked out of your on device, essentially).

Thing with my situation is that I can't get your first step.
I tried to unlock the boot loader in the stock JB which the tablet was returned with.
I tried to unlock the boot loader in the stock .30 ICS rom
Every single time I get the "An unknown error has occured. This could be an network issue. Try again later" message ...
I haven't unlocked my tablet before RMA'ing so my serial shouldn't be "known" anyhow.
Though I do see a [90R-OK0QMB30000Y] TF700T MAIN_BD_._1G/T33/AS part at the replaced parts list on my Service Repair paper.
To me it looks like that a motherboard/mainboard, could that replacement be my issue?

Hmm... No idea what that could be.
I managed to unlock it, but that was after I reverted to ICS .30 (not obligatory, from what I understood ) I didn't use the Unlock Tool from the Asus website itself but an older (ex-official) Unlock Tool. (v7) I think it was.
I'll have a look and see if I can find it.
That might be the same as the one from the ASUS website but if you could provide me the file or md5 sum I can compare it.

The unlock tools provided by ASUS to unlock the TF201, TF300 and TF700 have been proven to be identical files (by checksum verification) --- no need to reinvent the wheel there.
The unlock step indeed is crucial -- and it depends on ASUS' database. If you can't get past that, there'll no flashing available in terms of recoveries (and therefore no custom ROMs either). Have you tried dropping Gary a line yet?
No not yet. Will do that.

Hi,
I still hesitate weather to flash Clean Rom or not.... it's not that I care much about loss of warranty, but I'm not familiar at all with these unlocking, rooting, flashing operations and not sure if I'll manage to do this flawless.
...so I still have a stupid hope that ASUS will solve all stock rom problems (lags, hiccups...etc) with JB 4.2.
Is it worth to wait and expect ASUS to update stock rom to the same level as Clean Rom is now (haven't seen myself ...only read in this forum)?

Unlikely. CleanROM contains so many tweaks and workarounds that are not suitable for inclusion in an official firmware.

Trust me, cleanrom is super fast and smooth. It's worth it. When JB 4.2 come out, Cleanrom will have a new build on 4.2 and it will be even faster. Stock rom will always far behind. Currently we have all the automated scripts that do the install for us, so not to worry too much how this.
1. Unlock (download the unlock app and run it. No risk here, either it worked or failed, no harm)
2. Install recovery script to pust custom recovery (double click on the bat file and watch it does the rest)
3. Boot into recovery, select "install" browser to the romzip file and swipe to install
Reboot...profit!! The only downside is warranty, will be void if unlock. There is no news that JB 4.2 will be available for our tf700, so I won't hold my breath for this.

DPI.
What is stock DPI of TF700? I read in some posts that some people had problems with some apps because of choosing wrong DPI. What DPI should I choose in oreder to have as less probs as possible?
FSYNC.
Does disabling of FSYNC has significant impact on performace? Is it worth to mess with it?

What is stock DPI of TF700? I read in some posts that some people had problems with some apps because of choosing wrong DPI. What DPI should I choose in oreder to have as less probs as possible?

240 is stock.
I have always chosen 240 until recently.
213 is working very well for me no problems.
FSYNC.
Does disabling of FSYNC has significant impact on performace? Is it worth to mess with it?

This is the most important choice IMO I always disable Fsync.
I have never had a problem with disabling this and have seen nothing other than benefits.
Thanks in advance.

you are more than welcome!
First impresion of clean rom is very very goooood
Even better than I expected!!!! :good:
Even with enabled fsync it flies.
Big respect to all developers!
I'm thinking the same thing. I've held off too long, think it's time to unlock this.
From watching that video it looks pretty straight forward. I'm 90% sure I'm going to take plunge this week. Hope I don't mess this up.

Kinda enjoyed not dealing with flashing, wiping, reinstalling, etc. all the time, I did that with my last phone what seemed like every day. I just couldn't stand HTC Sense and the bloatware, had to do it.
Unlike most here I don't mind the stock Asus firmware on this thing so I figured I'd save some free time and not mess around with anything. Now I'm kinda bored and really wanna see what this device is made of.
I'll probably get my SG3 going next!

Trust me:
1) installing a custom Rom on the tf700 makes this bad boy fly! It is really night and day
2) Installing a custom Rom on a (contract free) SIII is super easy. Took me 30 seconds to root, no need to unlock and boom. You are ready to flash CWM (highly recommended for the SIII) and there you go: a cool custom rom for the SIII
(PS: For the tf700 I'd recommend to use TWRP as a recovery)

To my mind easiest way to get CROMI Installed for noob is to follow instructions in this tutorial video http://youtu.be/iank8iYulzo .
As this video is not very fresh and there are alreadt new versions of ADB tool, TWRP and CROM...I'm not sure if I can go step by step using newer versions of particular software....
Can anybody confirm that I can follow instructions on this tutorial using ADB tool ver 6 for update to CROMI 3.2 ?
I'm on stock JB 10.4.4.25

I'm in the same situation (TF700 is sitting at home now, freshly delivered this morning and I'm fighting the urge to have a 'family crisis' that needs my attention and ditch work). I started a thread to try an pull together an easy list with links to get from un-rooted, locked, stock to custom pleasure New (virgin/stock) TF700 to CROMI 3.2 - is this right? as well as check before I started that everything was right.
I think that I've got it sorted in post 6 and have spent a lot of time trawling the various forum posts. In the video you mention from saugstauber / Dominik is really good and he notes that as he hasn't rooted his device prior to starting that he needs to push the recovery via the ADB tool rather than GooManager (that needs root).
I hope to get cracking on it later and will try to document each stage of the process and write it up for the XDA community with some explanations of each stage.
I did it yesterday, it was super easy. No hiccups at all
Started with CleanROM, then decided to try BB7, but it was still a little too buggy. CleanROM seems more stable, back to that for now.
So far, I don't notice too much of a difference performance wise. It's still not smooth at all switching between applications and opening and closing them. Scrolling while browsing isn't any better either. Both my Kindle Fire and SG3 are still much smoother than this.
Oh well, I'm glad to be able to get rid of the bloatware at least.

Hm... strange... my experience with clean rom is very good....compared with stock rom browsing became pleasure...of course it is not perfect...but now I feel that I have different tablet.
Earlier l was getting "wait/close" message several times per day...now it's gone. Scrolling through pages is A LOT smoother. And generaly typing lagis almost gone...switching throw apps is a lot quicker. Youtube shows videos with any pauses.
I was in the exactely same situation of the OP, but decided to go to the flashing world for my new TF700.
I followed carefully every instruction a the flashing of CleanROM went well and now I have a new tablet. Ir is now really smooth and most of the lags are gone.
For you that are still hesitating I highly recommend unlocking and flashing CleanROM to see that you have a top device.
For your information the steps I took:
1) Unlocked
2) Installed ADB on my computer. Struggled a bit to set the path (which was not exactley the same as in the tutorial) but all went well.
3) Installed drivers via ADB tools.
3) Checked if ADB was correctly installed and the tablet recognized by pc.
4) Flashed TWRP via ADB.
5) Backed up device using TWRP.
6) Copied ROM to the tablet internal memory.
7) Flashed ROM, choosing modified stock kernel by thats_ok and kept fsync enabled.
8) Enjoyed a new tablet.
I got my TF700 around April of this year. I rooted it, but left it on the stock 4.1 android it came with. A couple weeks ago, I let it go through with the stock 4.2 upgrade. Mostly fine, but I kept finding things that bugged me. One of which was that my root seemed to only be partly there. I had installed OTA RootKeeper, and it said that it had restored root after the update. What I'm finding though, is that only apps which had root before still do. Anything new gets told there is no root.
So after all that, I decided yesterday to flash to a custom ROM. Since I thought I had root, I installed GooManager to try to put TWRP on for the flashing. It never gave me any errors, but repeatedly just didn't do anything, and attempting to reboot in recovery mode always failed (once I got the "dead android" with the exclamation point, but usually it would just do a normal reboot). That lead me to figure out the no-root problem, so I decided to reinstall root. I tried with the Scott Tool and with Motochopper, but both failed. In the process of trying to fix those issues, I went ahead and did a factory wipe, but still couldn't get them to work.
So that's where I'm stuck. I have a "factory fresh" install of 4.2.1 that is apparently still locked and unrooted. I want to put root back on at a minimum, but would really like to put on a custom ROM. Nothing I have found here or elsewhere has suggested anything that has worked for me. One site suggested that I needed to use the Asus unlocking tool, however I can't find it for download anywhere (all sites point to the Asus site, but it's not providing the download link anymore). Can someone help me get this working?
Get the unlock tool from here (choose "Android" as OS):
http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=ASUS+Transformer+Pad+Infinity+TF700T&p=28&s=1
Unlock your device (and void your warranty), then use the fastboot method for installing TWRP, as described on their web page.

Thanks for the link. All the ones I found would not display anything in the OS selector, so nothing was downloadable. I'm working on that step now. Do you have a link to the fastboot method? Other than seeing the term in a few posts, I have no idea what that is or where I would find the directions you mention.
