help with samsung galaxy tablet 2 power button !
*Hi guys*I'm finally making the move and have bought a Samsung galaxy tablet 2 for my bmw e46 dash but have found a problem and wondered if any of you guys have a work around for it ?As you know the power button is on the edge of the tablet externally so once it's installed behind the dash you can't push it to either lock the screen or take it out of sleep mode and also it doesn't matter have a proximity to sensor built in etc*Any idea how I can press this power button while it's behind the dash either by the touchscreen using an app or another way that anybody can think of cause I'm stuck ??*So help ppl**

I've read some people use an app called TASKER to set it so that when they crank the car (giving the tablet power thru the charger) the screen comes on and stays on till its turned off. maybe check more into that?

use a custom rom with volume key waking up option.

If he won't have access to his power button after mounting the tablet in the dash, he probably won't have access to the volume buttons either.
here is a thread from another site where a guy put a nexus 7 into the dash of his vette http://ls1tech.com/forums/stereo-electronics/1584175-c6-android-tablet-stereo-dash-install.html

If your'e thinking about doing a hardware mod , Try AdamOutler (XDA TV) He does some pretty cool stuff and may offer some solid advice. Knows his stuff thats for sure.
XDA unboxing /tutorial Adam Outler style
Guess you could move the power button onto the dash itself if the device is getting built into it as a permanent fixture ? Not that id have a clue how to do that lol.

Not making any mod to the tab: You may mount a solenoid, http://www.solenoidcity.com/solenoid/solenoidcatalog.htm on the dash to actuate the switch. Will require some mechanical / electrical skill to accomplish the job..

fixed?
did you ever find a solution.. I have the same car and the same issue
Thanks!

Thing is you can easily get apps from store to
1.lock screen
2.turn off tab
3.toggle volume
But real problem comes with turning on tab...
Though you can turn on tab from sleep via some apps called smartawake and others(believe of there are lot of them on play)
By these apps you can turn on tab using proximity sensor(it will work),vibrations
But for instance when your tab gets off you have to press power button.
That can be done by pressing in physically or a hardware hack(you got to open up your tab and do stuff with your power buttons.like providing external switch to it etc)

Hey guys I am having a similar problem with my galaxy tab install in the car. I come out in the morning and the tablet is dead. I am currently charging it via usb but was planning on putting a power inverter in the glove box for faster charging (maybe?) What I would really like to do is to be able to extend the power button leads to an external button that I can mount in the dash. Anyone done this before or have any suggestions?

Someone recommended Tap Tap App (lock and unlock the screen with a double tap on the proximity sensor) around here. I've tried it and it works.

Yea that would work for turning the screen on and off, but im talking about if the tablet dies completely. It will be getting charge when I turn the car back on but I wouldn't be able to turn the tablet back on itself because I can't get to the power button.

Your Tab will boot into charge mode. Maybe you can change the init script logic: if boot into charge mode, wait a minute, and then reboot into normal mode.

There are some changes that can be made to the kernel to boot the os when powering the tablet. I had this behavior on my lgp500 as a bug on cm builds. To keep the display on you can check keep display on during charging.

I'll try. But now I am so tired, back from my real work duty. A short break after driving my car for about 3 hours, 1 hour from home 3.49AM here

Just to over simplify the first thing that came too my mind was a knob with an off set round plug on the other side...turn the knob you push the button..

[Q] Power Button Not Working

Hi guys,
I have a little problem where my phone's power button will not function in any way, long presses, short, almost embedding my thumb in it, all to no avail. This is doubly dissapointing as I have just installed the latest dexter plus patch to fix the problem. I still had the problem on the previous version and I thought a clean start may fix it. The only way I can get the screen on is to press the media play button! Which of course isn't doing anything on dexter.
Hunches:
I have been playing with a light sensor program and using a 3 second press to turn the phone off, I am only thinking this is related as when I re-installed then turned off the phone using a battery pull, that now the media gallery button will now not work at all, so that is a change.
Second, the power button is buggered. Seems unlikely as everthing feels normal, no big drops have occurred from heights, and the button is travelling in and out as usual.
I have also noticed that as soon as I re-insert a battery that the phone starts immediately, the M pops up as if it is already posting. So maybe it is stuck down?? Again, I don't think so, as the mechanism is working per usual.
If anyone can help it would be fantastic, you guys haven't let me down yet, and this thing is purring, but unfortunately I cannot use it lol. Just my luck.
Thanks in advance
another thing, still not solved
Another thing is happening, the phone screen turns on "after" pressing the power button, it may be once or a few times, and then pressing the gallery button.?!?!
Also, at random times it plays a podcast on my phone, the exact same podcast, and from the start, though the duration may be a few seconds then repeat, or it may go for ages, its quite a rude podcast too which has caused me to throw my phone under the car seat to shut it up when people have been trying to talk to me, as you can imagine its quite embarassing.
There are no services or apps running that I can find related to music, it may happen after pressing the camera button, or opening a website.
It is still going really fast though. And I have also reinstalled the light sensor program so I can turn it on and off without causing damage to the power button.
Thanks again everyone.

please clarify
sure, so the only way I can get the screen to turn back on, after turning off as per display power saving preferences, is by pressing the power button, maybe a couple of times, then following that up by pressing the gallery button next to the shutter button, pressing the gallery button doesn't seem to be working to turn the screen on now, but this combo is.
I hope that helped.
Cheers.
EDIT:::
The gallery button alone is working again. sorry guys.
You might just want to reflash it to stock to see if this resolves the problem.
Yeah I think I may have to.
Before I do., I was reading a post on a different forum where another person was having a similar issue. They seemed to solve the problem by using rom manager to boot to a manual restore menu where there was a button tester section, after using it the power button worked for them. I tried but after resetting it displayed a triangle graphic then rebooted.
Is there any way to do this with our open recovery program or any other utility to test the functionality or maybe reset the button or apply a patch etc.
Thanks again :-D

Getting Frustrating
Alright so I followed your advice on your videos on how to reflash to stock, so of course my bootloader does not show up the same as yours on the video. I can get to the bootloader fine, using the button combo or by using quick boot > bootloader, both have the exact same result, the boot loader screens as follows:
Bootloader Fastboot mode
80.89
and that is it....
Also, my computer using rsdlite does not acknowledge the phone, not omap drivers loading etc. Followed your instructions exactly.
This is frustrating me to no end lol.
I am guessing that because I can get to the bootloader with combo no problem, that the buttons physical connections are working.. At least thats a positive.
Can I flash to stock with openrecovery? Or maybe to an earlier version of Dexters froyo? Other ideas?
Any help would be much appreciated guys, trying to use this phone at work with light sensors to turn off screen is not as easy as they say. OMG....
Thanks so much

The fastboot bootloader isn't the right one. So... if you hold volume up + camera shutter while powering on you end up in fastboot? That's really weird.
Maybe your keys have been remapped somehow? Does anyone know a chord to boot fastboot? Perhaps check to see if your USB port is clean?
Lmao
Just my luck to have a weird problem. I thought it may have been remapped so I have been trying the program buttonremap. It doesn't seem to let me do anything except stop the buttons I re assign doing anything :'(
Does anyone have a proper key mapping file that I can replace with my faulty one to hopefully fix it?
Or any other ideas?
Cheers everyone

Ok installed anyunlock it allows you to use any physical button to unlock the screen. It doesn't respond when the Power button is pressed, it responded fine to volume rockers, gallery and shutter though.
Anyone know if this would mean for sure its a physical problem before I crack it open and try and fix it.
Thanks guys.

No one has any solutions for me? Come on guys.

Breakthrough!
I am pretty sure I have fixed the problem, I tapped the phone fairly hard on its sides and back, and lo and behold after a battery pull and replacement it didn't turn itself on, I waited, nothing, so then I held the power button and it started up!!!!
But....I have another problem that happened before that, I am stuck in the boot animation that open recovery uses before going into its program (i.e. where you can load nandroid, wipe dalvik cache etc).
I was about to load a new rom, and was in open recovery, had installed it and about to do the reset and the phone turned itself off, and thats when I got the problem with the sticking boot animation.
So just to be clear, I am stuck in a boot loop, but not with the M logo, the restore logo.
I hope the power button solution can help someone else, as random as it is.
If anyone could help me get out of this boot loop without flashing stock that would be great. ( i can get to the real bootloader now btw)
Thanks again everyone.
Solved it all
Just took the sd card out and rebooted. And the power is getting better after banging it.

So, is your conclusion is that the button was stuck and the banging freed it? It doesn't restick?
The Button is not perfect still. Sometimes over sensitive Occasionally it will not even work but it works most of the time. I am just wondering what cleaning solution I could use to free it some more.
It has certainly been a trying problem. Cheers for the help.
Now I need to figure out why I have this strange ghosting on the top of my screen.....

Samsung Galaxy S2 Power Button Not Working
Hi Guys,
Any solution for the power button problem? Current latest Android 2.3.3 Samsung Galaxy S2 also having the same power button problem. Most of the time I can't use my power button to turn on/off the screen (wake/sleep) and there's no menu for long tap as well. Luckily it does wake when i press the only physical Samsung center button.
What i have already tried: Factory Reset, disable Power Saving Mode, Spare Part+ (apps), Screen Off and Lock (apps), and all won't help.
Is there any current updates or patches to allow the power button to work as usual?
Thank you.
take it to the samsung technical centre

[Q] on/off button

is there any other way to switch on my XT720 else than using the on/off button? my on/off button broken a few days ago..
U can use OpenRecovery.apk. Options are: Recovery Boot, Normal Boot, and Normal PowerOff. OpenRecovery.
Edit: Ahh sorry, I thought u asked about how to turn it off. U may try turning it on by connect it to the charger. But it works only on ROM that doesn't support charge-mode-only. And i don't have an idea how to do it.
Sorry for that. You might try an app called "button remapper" which is available for free on XDA.
Tell us if it helped you out.
Good luck!

I'm pretty sure that there isn't. Acutally sometimes when I remove battery and then I put it back to go to Bootloader the phone boots itself before I hit the power on/off button, but I think that's because I didn't wait long enough. Other than that I don't see it doing with a program and there is no other hardware option as far as I know.
Just send your phone to repair, I bet it won't cost much.
I think there are two aspects here. Using the power button to turn on the device from a power off situation. Maybe this can be done by removing and replacing the battery, but I don't think it always works. The second part is when the phone is already on but the screen is off/locked. I think that remapper app does indeed work for that. Alternately you can ask the nearest cute person to call your phone to wake the screen. Boom. Your phone is awake and you have their phone number in you call logs.
Indeed, kindly ask the nearest cute person - sounds like a plan!

i think the best thing is to send it for repair... i've tried all of the possible ways to put it to on but failed..
use power manager apps to lock your screen.

If you want to take the case apart you could remove the power button and wire in a short throw solenoid that is activated by the car's internal 12 volt power. This would trigger the tablet's power button automatically when the car started.
You'd need to root the device to install a power off button on the homescreen through so you could power it off via the touch screen.

about your suggestion, i am not sure if i am able to follow your idea with my poor knowledge. i will appreciate if you can give me a little step by step guide.
eventually.... let's say that i dont want to remove the power button..........
if the device for some reasons will shut down (not just the screen, i mean total power off) is there a way via pc to power on again without use the power button?
maybe adb command or other way?
thanks again to all, i have almost finish all the work so that i am ready to assebly it on the car.......
cheers
Well you can't use adb to power on the device. That deffinately doesn't work.
What I was talking about was using a solenoid that runs on 12 volt power. Basicly a solenoid lets one electrical circuit influence another electrical circuit without the two circuits connecting.
The car's DC power would activate the solenoid which is basicaly just an electromagnet. When it has power the electromagnet activates and a little piston inside it completes an electrical connection for the circuit you want to power.

Even easier to wire, you could also move the power button. Just take out the one that's in the tablet and run two wires from the existing leads to another power button that you remote mount somewhere else. This won't be automated to start when the car does, but it will let you use a remote mounted button that functions exactly like the existing power button.
The only down side is the difficulting in installing those lead wires. The power button in the tablet is wired with a VERY TINY ribbon cable. It's basicly two copper lines embedded in a single flat plastic wire. It's very delicate work to cut those and soilder in new wires. It can be done, but it takes a delicate hand with surgical precision.
If you do it right though, it will work like a bloody charm. And you can put a power button on your dashboard somewhere that's easily accessible.
The 3rd option, that's the least high tech, is to fabricate something that lets you press the existing power button. Perhaps a hole in the dash bezzel that surrounds the tablet that lets you stick a finger in under it and hit the button. That's guarenteed to work. It just involves careful fabrication to make it look nice.
Also, for the application you're trying to use the tablet for, read through this message board....
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/
It's a message board dedicated to in car computers. I built a Windows 2000 based PC to run GPS and audio in my car and that forum was absolutely invaluable. If there's another sollution to remote mounting smartphone power buttons it will be there with how to guides. It's a great community for getting help doing the kind of project you are working on. They will probably have good software ideas for you too to get the best use out of the tablet for your purposes.

I have one in my dodge magnum. If your looking to have your tablet turn on with the ignition you can try a program called tasker.
I have power supply attached to my ignition and when I turn on engine my tablet wakes up. I have a ton of things automatically start when it recieves power. Everything pauses when it doesnt recieve power.
Or you could also try tablet talk and maybe those nfc sticker things. You have a lot of options of you dont want to open up the tab.

i am using two wave to let the screen off and two wave to wake up. all other setting as default.

let me know if i can help you in some way.

I second the Tasker solution. Also, since you're mounting in the car anyway, i would look at an app called Torque. A cheap bluetooth OBD2 interface can be used, and Torque can be set to put the device in standby when ignition is turned off or when tab isnt "plugged in" (because power to tab is switched by ignition).
Using Tasker, you can wake the device when the ignition is on, then start the apps you use while driving (pandora, maps, nav, my tracks, etc). There's a bit of a learning curve with Tasker, but spend a bit of time with it, and you will start to see its potential!
Yes. Tasker is a great app. I use that in my og galaxy tab I have installed in my car. I wouldn't worry about powering the device on and off. If your trying to save power, you won't lose much even on really hot or cold days. Tasker has a lot of options that you can set to help save power.

An app to turn off the screen WITHOUT locking.

Hi All,
I was hoping you guy might be able to help me out.
The LG G3 is awesome, i love being able to turn the screen on and off without using any buttons.
One bit that i think could use some work is that currently, when the screen is on, you can tap the notification bar twice to turn the screen off, however, i find that this doesnt work so well all the time.
I have Nova launcher and i wanted to link a two finger swipe gesture with an app to turn the screen off however...
All the apps on the store only seem to offer you the option to turn the screen off and lock the phone immediately at the same time. Does anyone know of an app that will let me turn the screen off, but NOT lock the phone immediately, and just leave the lock settings to the system defaults.
It seems pretty straight forward but i've tried about 30 apps on the store and all of them only screen off and lock, none allow you to do it without locking the phone immediately.
Any help would be really appreciated!

You could try an app like Button Savior. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smart.swkey.nonroot
It has the option to swipe from the side to bring up the buttons, and from what I understand, the power button on it is exactly the same action as pressing the power button on your phone. You could tweak it to try and get it to the solution you want, but I think at least the button should be what you are looking for.

My phone seems to do the same action either way. I think I know what you are talking about. It seems that on previous roms, the screen could go dark, but if I woke the phone back up it wasn't actually locked. What about this app? It seems to distinguish between the two.

Tried both of the above... Neither seem to work!

I use "No Lock" when I want to switch off the phone but bypass lock settings when I turn it on. Is that what you mean?

Hi, Thanks for the suggestion... The problem with that app is that the phone won't lock until I go back in and disable it... I want the phone to use the same system timeout so if I do leave my phone lying around it will lock after 3 or 5 minutes on its own.

Hi All,
I was hoping you guy might be able to help me out.

Take this.
Note: Needs Root
Not sure it it covers your needs, but I'm using SkipLock combined with Gravity Screen
SkipLock let's you bypass the lockscreen (and pincode) when your phone is connected to either a trusted WIFI network or a trusted BT-device (carkit!).
As soon as you get home you'll turn on your screen and you the lockscreen as usual, but from that point on it's lockscreen free until it disconnects with your wifi network.
So when you turn off the screen the screen goes black, but as soon as you turn it on again you'll see either the homescreen or your last opened app.
It works really GREAT!
Gravity screen is not needed but makes it even easier. It automatically turns your screen on when you pick up the phone, and turns it off when you place it down (configurable). It also features Pocket Mode so it will turn the screen off when you put it in your pocket and on again when you take it out. Worst part was getting used to NOT press the power-button anymore

Hi, Thanks for the suggestion - i just tried the app and it has a non-root version, but that just basically turns the screen black, leaves the notification bar and navi buttons and doesnt actuall replicate pressing the power button.
I cant root my phone either as i need to use banking apps and these dont work with root.
Any other ideas?

This sounds like a cool set of apps, but I'm quite pedantic about my phone and the way it uses battery and with all the sensors working. I'm not sure its right for me, but its cool none-the-less.

Skiplock doesn't use up any battery. Gravity MIGHT, but there are options to choose that use up more or less battery.
Don't know about needing root though...
Hi, I have been looking for this too....no solution? I use the trusted places and devices to keep my phone unlocked when i am home, and when in the car (connected to bluetooth) but of course turning off the screen also locks it.
SkipLock isn't compatible with my Lollipop G3 - any solutions that work on Lollipop? I've been using Tasker but somethings it messes up things a bit so I would like to try something else

to be honest, the idea is valid, and good, but its kinda pointless. why pointless? ill tell you.. what if the phone is powered down? and what if you are in recovery? cant use the hand wave for that, can you? see, pointless(mostly). ive had many phones where the power button has died, and each one i found ways to power on/off without using the button. yes, from a power off state, or from recovery.

yes you are right about if the phone is power down, but there are some cases where it will be helpful if the phone is powered on, so i will say its is still very useful.
I use Smart Screen Off, which has the option Of wave, speak, or flip to turn your screen on or off. I can't even find it in a search in the app store but I've been using it for a couple of years using the flip to turn off ONLY and it works great. I still use the button to turn on. I want a tap to turn on app but can find one that seems tonott drain the battery. Galaxy S3
