My battery life send much worse. What are you experiencing?
Do you have Google now on? My battery life has been better than 4.0 but I have Google Now and automatic location updating off.

Google Now off. Locating on, but that had always been the case.

Location services smash my phone on 4.0.4.
Did you soft reset? Always recommended after an update. Also try booting into recovery and clearing cache. That may help too.

How do you boot into recovery? I thought you hold the volume up/down with the power but it doesn't work.

I'm talking about the location services under:
Settings -> Google -> Maps & Latitude
- If you're not using Google Now, turn off Location Reporting.

Actually you are right by pressing volume up/down and then pressing power button you should be able to enter recovery mode >S

Turn off your phone first. Then unplug you phone from any USB cable. Now press all three buttons at the same time.

Ideally, if any process has stopped responding, you can come back to the home screen by pressing the home button.
It is a very rear situation where the phone freezes & this usually happens due to unstable overclocks. How to come out of it, I have no idea, sorry mate.

I think you mean restarting when its frozen right? To do that press vol+ vol- and power simultaneously for some seconds, it should hard reboot.
Got the hardware checked out, all cleaned up and fine.
Had miui and it just happened randomly. So I restored a backup of aokp with matrix and still. Every once in a while the reboot menu comes up as a delayed reaction from hitting the power button. My current fix is the volume wake option. Also volume rocker works when the phone is on, but doesn't work to select recovery from the boot loader menu!! So weird!
Any help would be appreciated.

There is a button test in the advanced menu in the recovery.

No numbers come up hitting the power button, only for the volume and soft keys. What could be the issue if its not hardware?

If it doesn't work in android AND recovery then I can guarantee you that it's a hardware issue.

running cleanrom 3.0, no matter what option i choose in restart menu or shut down, it just does a hot restart
wish i could do a god damn battery pull
[EDIT] This self resolved this time but wtf??
To simulate battery pull hold power button it will blink a few times then turn off. Also disable fast boot in power options.

I had this same problem today.
But the advice given above didn't work for me?
I had to do a factory reset on the phone.
Then the trick to shutting down the phone is to do it BEFORE you set up the phone, immediately after the first bootup.
Just for the fun I decided to brick my phone on purpose. Holding the power button will effectively turn the phone off. Got back into my recovery and reloaded a backup.

Not much of a "brick" if you can just recover from a backup.
Shoot, then i probably brick 4 or 5 times a week

I also experienced this issue yesterday and was able to resolve the issue. Although I am running sick-sense, this might work for you to because I think the issue is kernel related. Try plugging your phone using the charger, and unplug it. see if it resolves your problem. Let us know if this helps so other who might encounter this issue have a fix.
I booted into download mode to check and see if it said I had a custom recovery installed or not.
Now how do I get out of download mode without pulling the battery? Is that possible?
Thanks
not that I have found...but would love to know aswell.

Have you tried this and had it work? No amount of pressing/holding/thumping-on the power button exits download mode for me...
To avoid removing the case, I also tried power + home, power + volume up/down, power + licking the screen :silly: to no avail.
Battery pull works every time.
I can confirm: holding down the power and ONLY the power for long enough to finish a bowl of popcorn restarted my galaxy tab 2 from download mode. Phew! The battery on that would've taken longer to pull!

Yup, hold power down has worked on this device and all my other Samsung's. Can take up to 20 seconds sometimes, why it's not consistent is beyond me.

thats just it, sometimes it works and other times it dont.
Battery pull works for me as well as "adb reboot"
I usually do a quick hokey-pokey at the samsung logo

Gotta call bulls*it. adb does not work In Download mode
Holding the power button for a few seconds does the trick - just tested it
I had the same question and the actual answer, which I found worked on My Samsung Galaxy S2, was, and I quote---"the same way that you entered Download Mode"--i.e. in my case, holding Volume Down, Home and Power On buttons simultaneously--worked for me.
This was first mentioned by XDA Member 'zoot1'--so he deserves the credit.

I am facing a problem as my power button is suddenly not working and I am sure the phone did not undergo any physical disturbance to have this problem. Also my capactive lights don't work and then blink when I boot the phone.
I am running ViperS 3.1.0. Any suggestions to fix the issue? Please guide me through if anything can be done.

Hey,
The power button does take a fairly longer press to bring up the power menu...I am experiencing that too..
But other than that the power button is working fine...to lock the screen...and to bring up the bootloader when switched off

Nothing I did to disturb the power button. Also when I pull the battery and put it in again the phone just starts by itself without having to press the power button.

When you're in Android, does pressing the power button not turn the screen off/on? Does the power button respond at all in any situation?
Since putting the battery in is causing the phone to power on without pressing the power button, I wonder if the power button is stuck on. When you put battery in and power up, what happens if you hold volume down button? Does it go to bootloader?
