By hard reset you mean restart of system and all apps?

Switch off, Switch on
Voila!

Ideally, if any process has stopped responding, you can come back to the home screen by pressing the home button.
It is a very rear situation where the phone freezes & this usually happens due to unstable overclocks. How to come out of it, I have no idea, sorry mate.

I think you mean restarting when its frozen right? To do that press vol+ vol- and power simultaneously for some seconds, it should hard reboot.

Alternative to a battery pull for rebooting Nexus?

I'm tired of having to take the case off and pry the battery cover off in order to yank the battery for a reboot! Is there anything else I can do when the phone locks up? Some sort of Ctrl + Alt + Del or anything? This tends to happen when messing with overclocking/undervolting.
I'd also like to know. Nexus One has the three-button salute (as it was affectionately called), which was power, volume down and trackball simultaneously. Does the Nexus S have a similar method?
with the screen on hold down the power button. Not sure that is what you were looking for. Its only a shutdown not a rebbot.
We're looking for something you can do even if the screen won't turn on or if the phone is frozen at some point. Not a standard shutdown/reboot with the power button.
There isn't another way, unfortunately. If it is frozen you have to do a battery pull.

if frozen, just a battery pull. if not, theres a reboot widget(that i used on my nexus one when the power button died and still use on the ns). if you have root, you can type reboot or reboot recovery in the terminal emulator app.
That's interesting...so only HTC handsets have a "secret" reboot key combination? Every one of their phones has a three key combination that reboots the phone, which is clutch when it's locked up or otherwise messed up. Shame Samsung didn't do something similar.

The HTC Evo had/has no such key combination to reboot while on.

The Epic had one as well. Shame the Nexus doesn't, but sometimes it can be more annoying then useful. I feel you though it's annoying to take the case off, but thats why I just dropped CM7 and went back to the stock ROM... no more freezes
HTC Dream had one as well (call, end call, and menu at once). The three finger salute
Phones with at least 3 hard keys can do that. If NS volume buttons were separate they'd probably include it in.

The galaxy S series is the same setup and had a shut off key. It was to hold the power button down and the phone would shut down even if it is frozen

Hmm.. I guess I never thought about holding the button for a reboot. Maybe Google didn't either.

Replace the battery cover, which is the entire back. It might be that the "button" isn't making contact properly.
Remove the entire back cover, and where the "button" should be, press down on it with your finger.
Do a battery pull and then try it.
I don't think it's anything to do with the phone, it was doing the same thing on mine. I had to pull the battery numerous times a day.
Until I flashed a rom with a stock kernel, and now it's fine again!

First off, what chris is trying to say is, that when in Recovery menu, you can use the capacitive buttons infront of the phone to move down and up and also select items in recovery menu. The search button can be used to select items that you would select with the power button.
Ugh..nightmares of the problems I had with my n1's
the phone is gone... thank youu everyone for your advice. when the power button stopped working first thing i did was take the case off and try with my hand still to no avail. so back to tmo it went

[Q] I can't shut my phone down! just restarts!! PLEASE HELP

running cleanrom 3.0, no matter what option i choose in restart menu or shut down, it just does a hot restart
wish i could do a god damn battery pull
[EDIT] This self resolved this time but wtf??
To simulate battery pull hold power button it will blink a few times then turn off. Also disable fast boot in power options.

Yup. Its meant to work all the time, in place of a battery pull.

I had this same problem today.
But the advice given above didn't work for me?
I had to do a factory reset on the phone.
Then the trick to shutting down the phone is to do it BEFORE you set up the phone, immediately after the first bootup.
Just for the fun I decided to brick my phone on purpose. Holding the power button will effectively turn the phone off. Got back into my recovery and reloaded a backup.

Not much of a "brick" if you can just recover from a backup.
Shoot, then i probably brick 4 or 5 times a week

I also experienced this issue yesterday and was able to resolve the issue. Although I am running sick-sense, this might work for you to because I think the issue is kernel related. Try plugging your phone using the charger, and unplug it. see if it resolves your problem. Let us know if this helps so other who might encounter this issue have a fix.

Trouble with Power button.

I am facing a problem as my power button is suddenly not working and I am sure the phone did not undergo any physical disturbance to have this problem. Also my capactive lights don't work and then blink when I boot the phone.
I am running ViperS 3.1.0. Any suggestions to fix the issue? Please guide me through if anything can be done.

Hey,
The power button does take a fairly longer press to bring up the power menu...I am experiencing that too..
But other than that the power button is working fine...to lock the screen...and to bring up the bootloader when switched off

No it is not the problem. It was fine this morning but suddenly the problem is appearing, I don't know why this is happening.
Also the Capacitive button lights don't work this was not the case before on ViperS

Nothing I did to disturb the power button. Also when I pull the battery and put it in again the phone just starts by itself without having to press the power button.

When you're in Android, does pressing the power button not turn the screen off/on? Does the power button respond at all in any situation?
Since putting the battery in is causing the phone to power on without pressing the power button, I wonder if the power button is stuck on. When you put battery in and power up, what happens if you hold volume down button? Does it go to bootloader?

First one to brick their M8?

Recently rooted it, installed Xposed, installed a module for smooth status bar or something, did a soft reboot and now it won't do anything.
Xposed doesn't seem to be working all the well with this for of root.

Mine did the same thing then just held power and volume down and it finally rebooted.

Been through the Evo, Thunderbolt, DNA and now the M8 is my first brick. I suppose I could say I lost it and hopefully the warranty will cover it.

Holy ****. I love you Bracht. I was holding Volume Down.
Just wanna chime in guys watch what you do till we have a stock recovery we can flash and everything else be gentle
Yes if your phone freezes after choosing soft reboot in xposed just hold "volume up & power" til you see the HTC logo on screen

Not a brick unless you some how found a way around write protection or an unrelated hardware issue
Do a hard reboot via holding power for 60 seconds

So you are essentially saying that because we do not have system write access, it is not possible to brick the phone per se?

I was holding Power and Vol Down like on my DNA, turns out I had to hold Vol Up.
For some reason, I tried to boot into recovery from Goo.im and I wound up with a red "!". Holding the power for over 3 minutes did nothing. Holding Volume Up plus power put me back in business.
I've had that issue several times now where I was horsing around with xposed modules and rebooting and it would just freeze with the screen super dim and the Verizon logo just barely perceptible. Holding power forever did nothing. One thing I found that ALWAYS recovers it for me is holding power and volume UP for about 30 seconds. It hard resets it. Works every time for me.
I was starting to get scared too as I'm coming from The Galaxy s4 and am used to being able to battery pull.
