Extreme Battery Crashes - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I recently switched to VZW and got the SGS3 (100% stock so far)...great phone except for one issue. Twice now the battery has completely crashed....going from fully charged before bed to full draining and turning off the phone while I slept.
I assumed it was an app causing the problem. At first I thought it was the game X-Plane. However, last night it happened again and I had not played any game. The one app I used immediately before both battery crashed was RadarScope. I'm surprised it would somehow cause the battery to crash after using it though because before going to bed I always use the ICS task killer to close all unnecessary apps.
Please help me diagnose these extreme crashes. I don't see how it could be RadarScope because I close it before going to bed, but that's the best explanation I have so far.

No one has any idea? I thought it may have been a quirk with the stock kernel interacting with certain apps, but maybe it's simply a bug in RadarScope or one of my other apps.

Warning: AppBrain kills your battery

My battery was inexplicably draining and SystemMonitor showed continuous 100% cpu usage even though it didnt show any individual app using a lot of CPU.
So, one at a time, I started killing apps and waiting a few seconds to see which app was hosing my CPU.
No doubt, the subject of this post lead you to the correct answer: AppBrain.
AppBrain is a fantastic app, but it was using 100% of my CPU at 1.136GHz and it will killing my battery. I don't know why SystemMonitor didn't show it as using much CPU time, but killing it did the trick.
FYI: I am on BakedSnack 1.5 on Kernel #4 (the "Fastest" Kernel).
How long have you had app brain?
I've only had it for a few days.
I only started monitoring my battery for differences because I just upgraded to BakedSnack 1.5 and whenever i install a new ROM i'm especially careful about battery life.
Please turn on system monitoring in System Panel to see what was historically killing your battery.
Its possible it could have gone rogue, but I've never seen that happen.

Did you come to this conclusion only after you turned off AppBrain and noticed a decrease in CPU usage? Did you try re-installing AppBrain to verify that it did in fact, increase CPU usage to 100% again? Sounds a bit like you're jumping the gun on this conclusion.
never have a problem with appbrain. Its latest version make it useful.
Yea, i always install app brain and its never gave me problems like that.
I think my method of
Watch CPU meter sit at 100% for 5 seconds
if CPU remains at 100% kill 1 app and goto step 1
the most recent killed app is your culprit
is pretty sound. It has worked for me on many OS'es over the years.
Nonetheless, at your requests I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app and seen the same behavior. System Monitor doesnt show any individual app eating the CPU but the CPU meter is at 100%.
I don't know what that means except that, for now, I am forgoing AppBrain.
System Panel shows CPU cycles per running app on the main screen. What are the stats?
appbrain works great here too... this is not a common problem with the app.... something else is messed
i have had no issues with appbrain. on any ROM i've used. have you tried to remove it and reinstall it to see if your issue returns?
You might be right here I uninstalled it and my battery went back to normal

Been using appbrain since i got my evo. no problems here.
The whole, "you are dumb it isn't appbrain, it has never given me a problem" needs to be kept out of this thread. he has a sound logical method, regardless of what a system monitor shows. If terminating appbrain ends a 100% cpu lock, then obviously it is a problem with appbrain or the kernel he is running.
how bout instead of everyone saying, "works fine here!" someone with the same kernel and rom as him post up and let him know how it works for them.
how would it make you feel if you were in his situation if someone said
"works fine here and has always worked fine on my evo"
or
"I am using the same rom as you and the same kernel and I do not have the issue"
The first is useless and assholeish, the second is called contributing and is what these forums are about

begone troll. you have added nothing here.

i see several folks letting the OP know that app brain in general seems to work ok.
i see a few folks asking basic troubleshooting questions.

Just a reminder XDA has rules regarding people policing forums XD
Annyway, I know for a fact that appbrain has kept my phone from sleeping. Using system panel, I have killed ALL apps, and slowly let them return. If my phone sleeps, I exclude the process so it won't be killed. After several repeats, uninstalls, and tests, it is appbrain that keeps the phone awake, though sporadically.
Just throwing that out there

you provided some kinda of feedback. that is good.
skydeaner provided nothing but an attempt to stir the pot.
and you call me out for it?
wow.
I actually noticed my battery life being god awful the last couple of days (just installed app brain 3 days ago). At the moment I was going back to CM Rom however once i get there I will check to see if it is the cause as well.
I also noticed the same thing about appbrain on my Droid X with leaked 2.2. I installed appbrain about 3 days ago and I started noticing my battery draining quite rapidly.
What made it really obvious that my battery was draining a lot faster than normal was that I had just disconnected my phone from the wall charger (100% charge) at around 6:45 am; I had not used my phone at all, but when I checked it at work at 8:30 am, my battery was already at 60%......that's crazy because my battery usually still reads between 90-100% at that time with no use.
Since appbrain was the only app I had added in the past few days, I stopped it from starting up at boot with autostart, and now my battery is back to normal. I think I am just going to uninstall the app completely.
There is an app you can install that works in conjunction with appbrain. I forget the name but it auto downloads and installs apps you pick in appbrain... even from a computer. Did you install something like that? I have heard it is bad on battery life

List of Apps that are incompatible with Tegra/G2x

I had 2 main issues with G2x.
1. Random Freezing on standby which i am considering as solved by changing Min CPU Speed as mentioned in the following thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102746
2. Freezing while using or launching some apps. So i want to gather a list of all the apps that dont play nice with Tegra Platform.
If anyone has issues with a certain app that causes the G2x to freeze or crash mention it in comments.
I've stated this multiple times, but Fring is the only one I had problems with.

Hex Defense.
Very insightful post. I got the G2x on the 20th of April, launch day, after downloading No LED the next day my phone shut off and I had to do a battery pull to get it back up and running. After I removed the No LED App I didn't have another freeze up or reboot for a couple of weeks. I've generally not had any problems since. I've had about three instances of freezing/reboots since I've purchased the G2x and otherwise it has performed excellently. It seemed obvious to me that the NoLED App was the culprit.
apps2sd pro moves apps to my sd but then they all disappear. same sd and the app work fine on my Vibrant.

Was that the paid version or free?

This app I used to use due to the short comings of the stock photo app.
This thing refuses to work on any ROM I have tried. So I'd think it might be the Tegra chipset.

S.o.d(screen of death)

So I just got my g2x, rooted,nv and cwm. Flashed cm7 and I keep getting s.o.d(screen of death). I thought was rom problem so I.changed rom and im on xdblasters 1.1.0 and keep on getting them. Any solution orhelp would be appreciated.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
Not sure I know of a rom for g2x called xdblasters.
Also, what kernal are you using? Are you overclocking or undervolting? Are you using setcpu or pimpmycpu? What is your max and min cpu settings? When you flashed, what was your procedure for wiping? Did you fix permissions after flashing? Did you use a program to restore apps? Did you use that program to restore system settings? Did you choose to restore apps and settings from google account?
The answers to all of these questions could help determine what you've got going on.
I apologize, its x boarders. And well I am using fauxs newest kernel currently using 1.1 overclock but it would also happen while at stock cpu with previous rom.i don't restore with google but I use titanium backup for batch. When I do new roms I always follow the clean slate rule;Wipe data, cache, dalvik, bat stats. occasionally I forget fixing permissions but I do when I get alot of force closes.

I didnt' see you mention formatting /system under mounts and storage. This is a critical step.
If it were me, I would try to keep everything as basic as I could each step of the way so that i could try to pinpoint the issue. Start by wiping everything (including sd card...just backup your user added stuff to your pc) and install a stock rom/kernal. See if it occurs stock...who knows? It's possible your phone is bad. Then if it doesn't misbehave with stock, then I would wipe everything again, including sd cards (interal and external), and flash cm7 (keeping cm7 kernal). I would try manually installing apps again, rather than using titanium backup or google restore. Just hook up to wi-fi (so you don't waste your data mileage) and go to market/myapps and redownload (hopefully you have a list of what you have).
But something to point out. On my phone, when I use CM7 (with stock kernal), I have to increase my minimum cpu frequency to either 312 or 456 instead of the default 216....216 seems to cause my phone to get stuck with the black screen also. The same thing happens when I run an undervolt kernal. So I've learned that my phone simply doesn't like undervolting, overclocking, or lettign the cpu run lower than 400MHz. Maybe that might help you out.
i was about to back up my sd and reformat it for that reason.I already tried formatting eemc mount or internal mem, and nothing. I also stopped using uv kernels and i kept my cpu min at 506 to keep it from doing, but with no result.I just flashed the newest release of xboarders 1.1.1 and i already got 3 sod while the rom is stock with nothing added. I am starting to think phone is bad. I bought the phone on Craigslist, so i might be S.O.L. i Appreciate
what should my mounts look like when i do a system format?

have you tried a new battery? I believe most of the G2x problems are likely due to a bad batch of batteries.. why you ask I have come to this conclusion? If I OC heavily OR run the LED light when the battery gets low >30%, my phone will shut off. This would conclude the battery cannot supply the needed current for the phone at the lower battery levels... this is my particular battery but I wouldn't doubt there are worse batteries out there AND/OR reported battery levels that are much higher than actual and getting the same problem I have encountered. Food for thought.

I agree with him... I had worst case of s.o.d with my g2x. Atleast 3 times a day I had to take battery out... but I solved it by doing the following
1. Increase min cpu speed 300 or more.
2. Discharging the phone completely and then recharging it completely.
I barely get s.o.d. may be once in 2 weeks. And whenever I do get em. I give my phone a discharge recharge cycle... then its good for next two weeks

What "Screen of Death" are you guys referring to? Never experienced such a thing...
Phone wont wake? Or what? A quick google search for "android screen of death" and "g2x screen of death" revealed pretty much nothing.
Have you pulled a logcat?
I always fully charge and discharge battery for proper calibration. Doesn't seem to be helping in any matter. I also stopped using any CPU management because I thought that was.

Its hardware defect. No matter what ROM you put on the phone, it will continue. Youve gotta call TMO and get a replacement. Sorry if thats not what you wanted to hear.
I agree with the battery theory. I purchased two generic batteries from ebay and they last 3 times as long and have resolved many of the resetting and SOD issues that I was having. Also, updated ROMS seemed to help, and not letting it fall asleep while you are playing games or something memory intensive.
Well I bought a battery, hoping that helps a bit. So far its a lil better than usual. Using stock voltage kernel. When I get new battery I will test

Issues with 2.2 update

Let me start off by saying this is my first Android phone that I've used that I actually haven't cared to root (and I started with a Nexus One).
I updated to 2.2 that ATT pushed out last week and while some things have proved, some things seem much worse.
1. Poorer battery life (drains much faster. Had 34% deplete in 3 hours and hardly used my phone)
2. Runs hot! For no apparent reason, my phone will get quite warm under the camera and the phone is simply just in my pocket getting e-mail or push notifications. Nothing crazy and no reason to get so hot (I can feel the heat through my jeans).
3. Multitasking is better but still sucks.
Anyone else having similar issues after updating?

Exact opposite on my device. Take it back to ATT, have them replace it (and tell them you don't want one with the 2.2 update) and then root, unlock, and ROM it.

Nope. My 2.2 update has really made this phone stellar. Though, I'm taking it back so I can root/unlock/rom. Since Cleanrom is based off the official release, I'll be going that rout.
Multitasking actually works, signal/clarity is quite a bit better, and my battery life is at least twice as good as it was before the update.
Methinks you need a factory reset.

Yep, I was having the same exact issues along with it never shutting up about wi-fi being available even though I told it not to tell me. Ended up resetting the phone to factory and it runs like a champ now.
I am constantly getting the wifi networks are available notification after the update, which I never got before. Quite a nuisance.
+1 to the Factory Reset. Many times this will clear up the problems that start happening right after an update.
It's easier and faster to go into the battery stats and see which app is misbehaving than it is to post on the forum here.

I'm having the same issue. Before the update I could go all day and have 35-50% battery left depending on usage. I updated to 2.20 before going on vacation. I don't have LTE at home but where I went on vacation was LTE areas. Battery drain was 10%+ an hour. I assumed it was LTE using more power. But everything I read said that LTE wasn't that bad. Only way I could stop the drain was to put in airplane mode. I got home Friday and drain is just as bad at home.
Anyway, I'm glad I found this thread.
I don't mind doing a factory reset if it solves the problem. Question is, does it solve the issue?
Thanks.
I will have to agree with some of you and say that the update was a big improvement on a great phone! I also think that when doing an OTA update the results are going to be hit or miss. The OTA worked great for me but I installed it on top of a new, clean and unmolested copy of 1.85. I'm willing to bet that just about everyone with new issues after doing the OTA will see an improvement after doing a factory reset. Having said that I personally would not waste time doing a factory reset, I would suggest flashing the ruu. If you're going to wipe your phone might as well get the best possible outcome for your time.

HTC One XL Battery Drain

Alright guys, I've pretty much had it with this phone and AT&T. This is the 4th issue I've had on my phone. Basically, my battery dies within 3 hours no matter what I do. I turned off all connectivity in class this morning and put it in my pocket at 90%, 2 hours later it was at 29% with "Google Services" as the main cause of the drain. I thought it was weird because my internet was still off. This is my third One XL due to numerous problems in the hardware, at this point I just want a totally different phone which I know they'll offer me. But I'd rather get a Nexus 4 or try to hold out for the Nexus 5. Any ideas on what I can do to maybe temporarily fix it until October?

Thanks! I'll let my phone recharge up and try to replicate the issue to see what's causing it and I'll see where to go from there.
Try uninstalling all your apps, keeping only the necessities. If you went through 3 phones already, the problem is probably you, not the phone itself.
I get this sometimes, I usually fix it by uninstalling updates to play store and deleting app data from play services and play store and the app that battery usage says is the problem. Then reboot.
There's probably an easier way to fix it but I haven't found it.

I would ruu. And install gsam right away. Then I would monitor battery drain over a day or two. If gsam reports no wakelocks but it keeps draining quickly, it's a hardware issue. If it's not draining quickly any more, install a few apps a day until you find the draining culprit.

Apparently there was an error with sync that kept my phone awake while it tried to finish it. A reboot and refreshing the sync seems to have done the trick. Thanks guys! I'm still jumping ship when/if the nexus 5 is released.
