[Q] Strange Drag and Drop Issue...I need help PLZ! - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I loved my xoom running HC and now that I have JB, it's driving me nuts. First it was the loss of flash and therefor all TV sites like abc.com and more importantly Amazon Prime. I did the side load thing and flash si back, but my audio is out of synch with the video and video is often choppy and unwatchable. I can almost live with that except now I can can't even transfer movie files (AVIs and MP4s). I don't think it's a JB issue as this just happened and I've been on JB for a couple of weeks.
Here's what happens. Stock wifi Xoom. I plug in via usb. Computer running Win7 64 bit sees the xoom just fine. I can drag a file from either the internal storage, or the sd card onto my computer. But when I try to drag any file from the computer to the xoom, I get an error message saying "The device is either not connected or is not connected". I've looked everywhere and I haven't found anyone with this problem.
HELP! Any ideas?
EDIT to ADD: Weirder still, I tried a Windows system restore. Now I can drag a jpeg or .doc file, but no movie files, regardless of size or format. CRAZY!

I'm trying to transfer files from my PC to my tablet, but the PC doesn't recognize the tablet - it wants me to format it. Same thing when I try to transfer the files from my mp3 player, the content of the player should be listed in the usbdisk folder, correct?
This is driving me NUTS, I'd appreciate some help. Oh, and tablet is rooted - VEGAn.
Thanks!

Rooting this Gtab is somewhat of a different process fyi
You could always use dropbox, Google it
It works fine for me, with no ADB installed (Vegan 5). Plugging the Gtab straight into the PC and turning on USB storage should recognize it as a USB storage device, like any other USB key.
OP, what operating system are you using? Have you tried a different USB cable? A different USB port on the PC? Perhaps a different PC (if one is available)?

Hi,
For the PC, are you connecting from your regular size USB connector on the PC to the *mini-USB* port on the side of the Gtab (not the full-size USB under the cover on the side of the Gtab)?
The mini-USB connector is the one you need to use to connect to your PC.
The full-size USB under the cover is a "host" USB, i.e., you can connect a flash USB drive or USB hard drive to that, and then assuming it's formatted FAT32 with only ONE partition, you should be able to see it on the Gtab under /usbdisk.

- My PC OS is Windows XP
- I am using the small port on the tablet, not the USB port under the cover, to connect to the PC
- I don't have a different cable/PC to try it with
- FYI - it WAS initially working when I tried to transfer files from my mp3 player to the tablet, the transfer was interrupted when the cord came loose from the tablet, and now it's no-go for both the PC or mp3 player file transfer process
- I do have a permanent folder usbdisk on the tablet, even when there's nothing plugged into the usb ports
Thanks for all the questions and suggestions, I'm glad there's people more savvy than I am with this, willing to help!

The small port (like a camera cord) should work. The cable has a USB end on the PC side. It should be recognized on the PC as an external drive. No need to install ADB unless you want to try that too.
One idea is try plugging the USB cable into different ports on the PC end.
If you have wireless and can share network drives on your PC, try File Expert. Its free and can be found in the market. With it I can connect to my PCs drives and copy to SD or USB in my GTab right on it. Granted, it took quite some time to copy a 1GB movie to SD2 (10 min), but it worked. I had to prevent my device from sleeping though or the transfer failed. Worked well though. I'm on TnT lite.

Hi,
I seem to recall that roebert (I think) had a problem w the miniusb connector being loose or broken. Have you looked at the connector in detail? Maybe the solder connection broke and it 'jiggles'? If so, probably need to get it repaired.
Jim
Well, I know it's not the cable, because I used it to transfer files from PC to mp3 player without any problems.
My PC shows the tablet (drive letter E assigned to it when plugged in), but I can't access the tablet - it's like the PC recognizes something is plugged in, but it doesn't recognize it as having content or something.
On top of that, I kept getting the android.process.acore error, so I did a datawipe and had to re-download all my apps again, to add to the aggrevation.
I will look at the different solutions suggested and if they're not requiring too much advanced knowledge, I will attempt them.
Thanks again for the help & suggestions so far, hopefully I will somehow stumble onto a fix that works!
So, I figured it out. Really simple - if you know how.
The VEGAn root is what did me in - when you plug in the cable, it doesn't give you the option to turn on the USB Mass Storage, which you need when you want to transfer files from PC to tablet. The unrooted device was a bit more user friendly by walking you through it when the cable was plugged in.
I figured out that if you tap and drag down on the USB icon on the top of the screen you can actually access the options - it's not just a status icon!
Hopefully this'll help out someone else who's rooting their tablet following instructions blindly without really knowing what's what!
Thank you again for all the suggestions, I really appreciate all the responses!
Astro SMB Module
If you are working on a home/private network and the file is on a shared network drive, you can map it in using Astro and the SMB Module for Astro ("Astro SMB" returns both in the market provided you have the market fix) and browse shared network drives just like you would on your laptop or PC.
Once installed, a network icon appears in Astro (looks like an upside down "T" or an old school windows network icon) and you can map in your network drives pretty easily. I use this with NAS and work files pretty regularly. You may have to enter alternate or domain specific credentials to make it work.
EDIT: Also I believe there are file format limitations, OS limitations, but haven't fully explored that.

Bluetooth file transfer issues

Hi! I'm running Valhala 1.1, so not sure if this is a problem with that, or with Windows 7, or what, but I paired my phone with my computer, but cannot seem to transfer files from my phone. When I try to send a picture through the gallery, for example, it fails and says "remote device rejected your request". Also, in Windows 7, when using the bluetooth device control thing, I can browse the phone, but only folders show up. NO files, just folders. Any ideas? I can stream music fine, just can't seem to do any file transfers.
I also had a problem like this when trying to send a song to my friend's Blackberry 8520. Im running Valhalla 1.3.2, any solution?

Atrocious Transfer Speeds on official JB OTA

Anyone else notice that external hard drives have horrendous transfer speeds when connected to USB? I have several 1TB passports filled with videos (mainly Anime), and I bought the TF300 because it played videos from my external hard drives like a champ. Playing videos over network shares are fine (ES File Explorer), but the same videos on my external passports don't play for ****, and sometimes the tablet crashes and reboots. Also, the remove external option (properly remove a device from the tablet) is missing, and I always have to do a scan to fix errors when I connect it to my windows device. Anyone else notice this?
I have the option to unmount, you can't have any notifications under where it says External storage inserted.
As of anime and all that, I will see what you mean in a few minutes. Are you just transfering to your external or internal?
As of now, I have no issues what so ever lol...
I see some slow download speeds from the Black Mart app, but that has always been the case.
Thanks for responding adrhodes. I was trying to play from the external. For some reason the option to eject still isn't showing for me.
I'll wipe and try flashing the official JB again and see if that helps.
adrhodes, I found the eject button Had to pinch expand the drive in the notification bar. Now to test transfer speeds again
Wiping and flashing the OTA again seems to have fixed my external hard drive playback issues. Thanks again for verifying that yours works adrhodes.

[Q] Weird file system problem when connecting to Windows

So I'm having a strange and annoying problem with my sgs3, I'm running windows xp, and when I connect my phone it shows up in 'my computer' as SCH-I535. The problem is, when I open that folder.. it is empty (shows no directories at all) when I'm connected as media device. However, if I switch from media device to camera and back to media device, I am then able to see the directories.. This is extremely annoying to have to do this every time I connect my phone in order to transfer files. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers twice, with reboots and all.. Still doing the same thing. If anyone could help me figure this out, It'd be MUCH appreciated.

Exploring USB flash drive

Alright, I got the Shield K1 a few days ago, so far it's an awesome tablet. I upgraded to 6.0 when I first got it, haven't rooted it yet(want to wait a little longer). So last night I decided to transfer some files by USB using a micro usb to otg cable. The flash drive connects fine, but I can only view the files through Androids "explore" option either in Settings/Storage or from the Notification Panel. Viewing the flash drive through a file explorer app shows the flash drive as empty. Is there any other way to go through the flash drive through another app? Also, when the screen times out, the flash drive disconnects, which is really annoying. Any fix for that?
Hi All,
I have the same problem! With K1 and MM, when I attach a USB drive via OTG cable, it is only possibile to browse the drive via the "stock" option (clicking on the notification message or going through Setting/Storage). All file explorers I tried (at least 7-8) simply doesn't recognize the drive as well all the various video players (kodi, mxplayer, etc.). The only exception I found is ES File Manager that recognizes the attached USB but it mounts the drive in some tricky mode since, clicking on a video file, kodi doesn't play it at all and mxplayer crashes in fast forwarding/backwarding
