First thread, so putting that out in advance.
I download ALOT of music, and since I wanted to sync lots of music from spotify to my phone and bring a few movies for traveling, I bought a Samsung SDXC 64GB class 10 microSD card from amazon on bf.
I've formatted it to fat32 (with guiFormat on windows and android itself), and my atrix will reconize it. But once I start syncing music to it it unmounts it after a variable amount of time.
Has anyone else been able to get a 64GB microsd to work with their atrix?
Thanks!
i dont think it would , since specs says the phone can handle up to 32 gb micro sd card , and never readed someone report about a working 64 gb micro sd card
sent from the gray stuff inside my skull
On the bionic, they say it works.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458992&highlight=64gb
Aren't the bionic and atrix 2 the same?
Also, I'm running magic mod jb. I read somewhere that 4.0+ has issues with sdxc, could that be an issue?
Try formatting with a different allocation size to see if it works.
Atrix2 doesn't support NTFS or ex-fat, which some other phones do.

Yeah class 10 cards are known to have issues with this phone. It really has nothing to do with it being 64GB or not, that is causing it to dissapear or unmount, but the fact that it is a class 10 card. We have had way too many issues with anything higher than a class 6 card in the atrix2. It is also noted that the atrix2 really technically does not support SDcards higher than 32GB, but I have a 64GB card that I use in several of my phones that seems to work ok from time to time, but I only use it to move a file from one of my other phones to the A2 once in a while, so long term I really don't have a lot of info on that.
Ok, that makes sense. Too bad they don't sell class 6 anymore. So I should try to find a class 6 32gb card then instead of 10?

anything that is class 4 or class 6 is know to work with out issues, no matter the size.
I have 2 class 4 32GB cards that I bought just for this phone that were like 30 USD 6 or 10 months ago, so I am sure you can find a few really cheap now. I know that the whole class 4 or class 6 and the speed thing really tend to turn people off, but I can copy 20GB of music to one card in just over 1 - 1.5 hours, so it is not too bad.

Thanks a lot Jim! Yeah the 32gb is like $20 on Amazon, so I'll spring for a couple of those. Your right, I guess you really don't need that speed anyway (I can wait to transfer my music).

i've recently got my hands on a VOX/s710 phone
my last phone before this used micro SD cards, it was a nokia
when i try to put my nokia micro SD into my VOX, it doesnt recognize, but, as soon as i put it on a nokia, other phones like a palm, etc, it recognizes
is there a problem between nokia branded micro SD cards with HTC?
i tried another brand of micro SD and it worked perfectly
any ideas?
cheers
Initially I tried a NOKIA micro SD card with my Vox and it worked fine.
hum, tks for the reply
so no clues at what the problem might be?
guess if i dont resolve this, ill have to buy another micro SD card
May be, you give a try by formatting the card using a card reader from a Windows PC. That might help.
Yes, make a backup and format to FAT32 (also useful if you want to flash from sd card)! Then put your files back on the card and try again!
thanks for the tips
fortunately, i dont have any indispensable information on the microSD card, i didnt use it a lot, since it was a 1G card, and i had a 2G on my older nokia.
i'm going to try and format it and then post the result hopefully it will work
but since i dont have a memory card reader right now, im gonna try and put it on my old nokia, connect it to the pc and try to format it from there, or format it from inside the nokia phone.
ill figure out something
thanks again for the tips
cheers

tks for the tip tryed it right now, and now its working fine
many thanks both of you for the help!
I have 2 GB microsd card installed. Is it possible to install a 4Gb card or more? Who tried? Does it support SDHC?
Funny thing, I've got an answer from htc support, they say 2Gb is the only possible amount supported

I dont know exactly how to do it search the forum, but i know that there is a thread that says that partion 4gb (using WM5torage that thread tells how to) and then you can use it.
the vox supports SDHC microSD up to 8Gb, found this in www.pocketpc.ch (will post the link l8 when back on my pc).
i'm using a sandisk SDHC 4Gb fat32 formatted, works perfect! i will buy a 8Gb soon and post the results here .

remembered to post this note, after fomarting the sd card, it worked well
just another question though, you guys are talking about 4 and 8 gigs sd cards
doesnt having a much bigger sd card slow down the phone? i've heard of such rumours but never got the chance to tested myself, and since i'm willing to make a sd upgrade i would like to know if its better to stick with a 1 gig or 2 gigs sd card, or i can go ahead and get a 4 or 8 gigs?
cheers
so, finally i bought this fine 8Gb microSDHC from sandisk, and i works just perfect.

i never tried with a 1 or 2Gb card, so there i cannot say. but on the otherhand i did not remark an diffrence of speed with the 4 or 8Gb card, they're just as fast as usual (in cellular device or in pc with cardreader). the only thing i can say, is that cards from cheap(er) brands are always slower than cards from quality brands (such as sandisk, as example). and also SDHC cards should always be faster than 1 or 2Gb cards, because they have a newer controllers (not 100% sure about this point, i think i might have read that in c't).
i hope i could help a little bit...
Dang, 8GB cards work without driver patching? That is champion. I'll be ordering myself one soon.
Yep, can confirm 8gb card works fine, have had one in mine for some months now...
Now what about 16gb? was that article written before 16's were available even the sandisk site seems to be out of date saying nokias that are supposed to support 16's only support 8?
anyone actually confirmed 16's don't work?

i guess we have to wait some time to test it
at work, some weeks ago, i discussed this with a dev. and he meant that from the hardware side it should be no problem, but maybe the driver needs to be updated. i'm not sure, but as i know the driver adds support for sdhc, no matter of the size of the card. he's not a sys dev, he does apps and branding, i'm only test-ex and advanved user, so correct me if i'm wrong (i'm still learning ).
edit: found following on http://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-sdhc-cards.htm
The new 2.00 specification should last a bit longer, as it allows SDHC cards to reach a maximum capacity of 32GB.
Click to collapse
so i think, if the device supports that specification (and the vox does), it should support cards up to 32Gb.
and again some info about speed:
The SDHC specification 2.00 calls for cards to be classified according to the minimal sustained DTS as follows:
Class 2: minimum sustained DTS of 2MB/sec
Class 4: minimum sustained DTS of 4MB/sec
Class 6: minimum sustained DTS of 6MB/sec
SDHC cards are classified to guarantee a specific sustained DTS. This potentially saves consumers money, as flash cards are priced not only according to capacity, but also to speed. For example, if a product's maximum DTS is 2MB/sec, dishing out extra cash for Class 4 or Class 6 SDHC cards would be a waste of money. Conversely, devices that can utilize the 4MB/sec or 6MB/sec DTR (i guess the author meant DTS, kel187) will perform significantly better with Class 4 or Class 6 SDHC cards, respectively.

my 4Gb card is Class 2 and my 8Gb is Class 4. i did not recognized any diffrences in speed advantages, neither on the mobile nor on the pc. so the vox and my cardreader must be class 2 devices, what a pitty ^^
I bought a micro sd of kingston class 4 16GB in the store, not happy with it at all.
In the beginning it had issues because i couldn't put any files on it. Eventually fixed that. A week ago i couldn't put any movies on it, let say files bigger than 100mb. Now i can't put any songs on it:S
Already did chkdsk, and formatted it like 20 times, still same problem

Go back to the store and maybe ask for a new one??they have lifetime warranty
is the card format are fat32?
Yes 1GB ext4 and remaining is FAT32
Then have u try to copy the file using the card reader?
Give the card back and buy another make. I bought one of these a few months back and it was causing me a lot of hassle. I had it replaced with another one and same problems again. In the end I just gave it back and went for a Samsung 8GB class 6- has been working fine so far.
Hello,
Just to let you know, I had a Sandisk 16Gb class 2 and I replaced it with a Lexar 16GB Mobile MicroSDHC Card Class 6 High-Speed and it's working not to bad, I'm really happy with it, much faster then the Sandisk.
Super34
Bought a Kingston 16GB SDHC Class 10 card for my Desire a while ago, and found out it is not a happy match. Simply too unreliable. Went back to the good ol' trusted Transcend 8GB SDHC Class 6 card.
Anyone got any experience with the Transcend 16GB SDHC Class 10 card on the Desire?
Hi,
I have a Kignston µSDHC 16Go class 10 and I'm very happy with it. What do you mean with "unreliable ?"
My device was becoming noticably slower with this card instead of faster, and I got read errors continuously in apps like media players, Astro File Explorer en Root Explorer. Possibly it was becoming slower because of the read errors.
A chkdisk on Windows 7 continuously gave errors and a chkdsk on EXT4 Recovery sometimes was even unable to fix errors on it.
Reformatting only helped for a short while, then the read errors would reoccur.
So I finally gave up on it and trashed it.
I read everywhere that the Desire is very picky when it comes to memory cards.
Well, it seems like your kingston card was dead, it shouldn't give any error on a chkdsk.
Did you know you can get it exchanged from Kingston under warranty ? It has a lifetime warranty. I had to do it for mine because the first one I had was defective from the beginning, I couldn't format it at all.
Trust me, I have this card and it works flawlessly since I got it exchanged !

I did exchange it already, the 1st one truly was crap, far worse than the 2nd one, the 2nd one was slightly better but still crap. So I decided to ditch Kingston altogether.
Lexar cards
I've had good luck with a lexar class 10 32gb cards. No one I know has any transcend cards though.
I can't use Transcend micro SDHC 16 GB class 4- I had to pull the battery almost always after using an app that accessed SD (camera, gallery, music player etc)
I've found that samsung has been a dream with good speeds and no issues (as of yet...). As for the Kingston i got a class 4 card and that worked fine for me.

Yeah, I was pretty certain it would work. It has worked on every Samsung Galaxy ever made so far. I think BestBuy had it for $70 one time. Still waiting for that deal to come around again. It might take a while...
But then again, 128GB might be better. It would be nice to carry every episode of all my favorite rewatchable TV Shows and all the TV Shows and Movies I plan on watching some day. Might take 2TB. Someday...
Wow crazy space. Let's hope they make batteries in the future to allow us to make use of all this video space
I put the same one in mine, when I saw that deal. Works fine. However as a word of advice from wasting time..........
Many state to use the sdcard.org's formatter which then formats it correctly and then put your data on it and then put it on your phone. However that doesnt work. sdcard.org formats the card as exFat and the phone cant recognize that. Let the phone format it which it will do as Fat32. Then it works fine.
Many threads state to use the sdcard.org formatter to achieve the best speed, thats the reason why I did it. So despite their recommendations, dont bother, it wont work.
On a side note of reivewing it. This 64gb card replaced my Samsung 32gb Class10 card. I have to say to say this 64gb card is REALLY slow when transferring data. It took a good 1hr to transfer 32gb of data on this card. The fatest I got was around 4-6MB/sec. The Samsung 32GB card (being it was class10) was at least twice as fast. But I cant complain too much, I mean its twice the space. Im sure a Class10 version of this 64gb card will cost over $200.

I'm affraid I will have to disagree with you on this. I purchased the card .. it was already formatted with exFAT. When inserted into phone, does not recognize it installed at all .. will not format, will not mount .. nothing.
I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 .. does not format FAT32 unless you're doing it be command line .. however, here is the issue with that .. standard command: format ?: /FS=FAT32 for the 64GB card took 2 hours to format, only to find that it errors out right at the end stating it is not compatible and over 32GB .. waste of time.
Hense .. this is why I attached a link to a command line program called FAT32format .. I executed this program from command prompt .. and poof, 64GB formatted FAT32 .. plugged into phone .. phone recognized the card, no problems at all .. I did however reformat the card via the phone afterwards.
So, for the initial installation (out of box) our phone WILL NOT see it until it has been formatted FAT32
Well mine had no problems reformatting on the phone itself. When I first put it in after the sdcard.org format it was exFat. Phone as you stated didn't recognize it. Then I just on the phone told it to reformat it. It did it just fine as Fat32. But either way like you said as Fat32 it has no problems.
Dixit
The only issue here is that you can't transfer files larger than 4Gb to the card when its FAT32. Something to keep in mind if you have large files.
I bought mine about 6 months ago and haven't hd a problem with it in any android phone and I formatted it in the phone. Now I'm just waiting on this skyrocket hd to come out and I'm selling this phone and buying that one. Has any boy heard any thing about a size bigger than 64gb

thanks for the note, it's a great price, but media-scan kills me
I love the space, I don't care about slow speeds because I usually dump data on the card (huge mp3 collection) and keep apps on the internal /sdcard (16GB)
The problem I see with this is that my current 32GB class10 card is being scanned by the phone periodically. This scan takes a LOT of time and 64GB would be even worse
If I find a phone that is equal to or better than Skyrocket + support exFAT I would go for the 64GB card in a heartbeat
Do you know such phone as of today ?

Just a thought, cuz I haven't noticed anyone say this but from what I've read class 6 and 10 cards are not ideal for mobile phones because they are optimized for faster sequential read/write (ideal and fast for cameras). Class 4 is faster at random read/write than 6 and 10(ideal for phones).
I just purchases a sandisk 32gb class 4 and I've never had it randomly scan and I use it for music, photos, some app data, backups etc.

this is unfortunately somewhat true. Class 6 in the OP should be okay though. I'm currently in an RMA process with Sandisk and in talking to their Technical support they said :
"We need to take the few information from you in order to process the RMA request. There is an ongoing issue is with Sansa Ultra 64 GB SDXC class 10 Cards the one which you have and on Android phones we need to use the Sansa Ultra 64 GB SDXC class 6 in order to make it functional. It depends on your requirement so please let me know so we can proceed with the request."

Just curious, as I am about to be on my 3rd card. First two cards, transfered for a short period of time, then froze, then reformatted, same thing. Next time reformatting froze, and both cards showed unsupported file structure.
Used:

linux fedora built in formatter
os x disk utility
fdisk
and everytime the card fails to format. I did call sandisk who told me their class 10 64gb microsd cards have had a really high fail rate...
I was on the phone with them asking why I should keep the card...lol
i am not angry, just really curious if I am the only one. Would be my Irish luck!

I've had my SanDisk 64 Gb card and GSIII for a whopping 8 days.
No problems yet, I filled up 50 gigs on the card and no errors of freeze ups (I haven't transferred anything into the card since the day I got it)
I'll let you know if it kicks out on me.

mine was immediate. First card I got 12 of 24gb transfered crashed, second card was 6gb of 24 before it crashed.
they are overnighting me a 3rd card, so i prolly will get it thursday, and will try again...
I purchased the 64Gb Class 6 over a month ago and have had no problems. I was bummed I did not go with the class 10, now hearing the high failure rate on the class 10 makes me glad I got the class 6.
Thats wierd, mine has worked flawless so far. Keeping my fingers crossed lol.
Is this the microSDHC or microSDXC? I'm about to pull the trigger on this one and if it's the same model, I'll wait.

yes this one.
Sorry to hear about your issue. I guess I'm glad that I cheaped out and went with the Class 6 before they started giving the good deals on the Class 10 ones.

I didn't think there was even a class 6 for sandisk's 64gb SDXC? One doesn't exist on their website anyways. I had even bought one off bestbuy advertised as the class 6 version, but when it showed up it was the class 10(possibly UHC too, threw the package out so I'm not 100% sure on that part)

My mistake, you are right. I actually meant between the two versions of the 64GB, the cheaper (non-UHS?) one.
I had a Class 10 64GB Sandisk card fail on me but it was plugged in to the computer via USB at the time so I don't blame it on the Galaxy S3. They sent me a Class 6 card in return. When pressed on it they said they have been having problems with the Class 10 cards and their technicians are looking in to it. After dealing with Sandisk customer service for a week, they finally agreed to send me a Class 10 card after I send back the Class 6 one.
So that means I'll be without an external sdcard for another 3 weeks! Total time I have been dealing with this issue is 4 weeks so far.
The Galaxy S III format function will only format for extfat32 which is Microsoft proprietary and not fully understood by Samsung or others. Its a known issue now that it causes corruption and missing files on the Galaxy S III. ROMs will also not support the formatting, you need to format Fat32 using a tool. I'm not sure if it could lead to permanent damage though as described in OP.

Been running Class 10 a couple months. No problems so far. Formatted fat32.

there are plenty of people using the card in exfat, as many have stated they stuck the card right in the SIII and off they went.
also, plugging the card right into my computer, and never into my phone, led to the same issue.
also mentioned, calling sandisk, they said their is a high failure rate on the class 10 cards. Those of you with cards still working, I hope my new card coming in tomorrow, works the same way.

If you do still want to get your old one working (if you still have it), I guess you can try this utility. It worked for me when I messed up some of my old cards pretty badly. Perhaps it is worth a shot?

have that listed in my OP, didn't work on either card. If I ran it on the card normally, would tell me the card was write protected. If I ran it on the card after using gparted to delete the main partition it would get about 40% through formatting and then fail saying the card stopped reading.
Sandisk cards really are junk & it's not just the 64 gig class 10.
I have used their cards for years as there is not a lot of other options at times, but I had three of their 32 gig cards go bad on me.
I now have three 64 gig class 10's but I back them up religiously to my PC. I don't use FAT32 as I store blue-ray rips to my card that are over 4 gigs & FAT32 won't allow that.
