Went out and purchased the SanDisk Mobile Ultra 64GB microSDXC Class 6 Memory Card from BestBuy today .. only $89.99 on sale from $149.99

Using a tool found on SoftPedia called FAT32format .. I was able to format this card ALL fat32 with no issues .. inserted the sdcard in my Skyrocket .. and poof .. the phone recognize the sdcard .. and ALL 59.xxGB that it was formatted to

Yeah, I was pretty certain it would work. It has worked on every Samsung Galaxy ever made so far. I think BestBuy had it for $70 one time. Still waiting for that deal to come around again. It might take a while...
But then again, 128GB might be better. It would be nice to carry every episode of all my favorite rewatchable TV Shows and all the TV Shows and Movies I plan on watching some day. Might take 2TB. Someday...

Many state to use the sdcard.org's formatter which then formats it correctly and then put your data on it and then put it on your phone. However that doesnt work. sdcard.org formats the card as exFat and the phone cant recognize that. Let the phone format it which it will do as Fat32. Then it works fine.
Many threads state to use the sdcard.org formatter to achieve the best speed, thats the reason why I did it. So despite their recommendations, dont bother, it wont work.
On a side note of reivewing it. This 64gb card replaced my Samsung 32gb Class10 card. I have to say to say this 64gb card is REALLY slow when transferring data. It took a good 1hr to transfer 32gb of data on this card. The fatest I got was around 4-6MB/sec. The Samsung 32GB card (being it was class10) was at least twice as fast. But I cant complain too much, I mean its twice the space. Im sure a Class10 version of this 64gb card will cost over $200.

I'm affraid I will have to disagree with you on this. I purchased the card .. it was already formatted with exFAT. When inserted into phone, does not recognize it installed at all .. will not format, will not mount .. nothing.
I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 .. does not format FAT32 unless you're doing it be command line .. however, here is the issue with that .. standard command: format ?: /FS=FAT32 for the 64GB card took 2 hours to format, only to find that it errors out right at the end stating it is not compatible and over 32GB .. waste of time.
Hense .. this is why I attached a link to a command line program called FAT32format .. I executed this program from command prompt .. and poof, 64GB formatted FAT32 .. plugged into phone .. phone recognized the card, no problems at all .. I did however reformat the card via the phone afterwards.
So, for the initial installation (out of box) our phone WILL NOT see it until it has been formatted FAT32

Well mine had no problems reformatting on the phone itself. When I first put it in after the sdcard.org format it was exFat. Phone as you stated didn't recognize it. Then I just on the phone told it to reformat it. It did it just fine as Fat32. But either way like you said as Fat32 it has no problems.

The only issue here is that you can't transfer files larger than 4Gb to the card when its FAT32. Something to keep in mind if you have large files.

I bought mine about 6 months ago and haven't hd a problem with it in any android phone and I formatted it in the phone. Now I'm just waiting on this skyrocket hd to come out and I'm selling this phone and buying that one. Has any boy heard any thing about a size bigger than 64gb

I love the space, I don't care about slow speeds because I usually dump data on the card (huge mp3 collection) and keep apps on the internal /sdcard (16GB)
The problem I see with this is that my current 32GB class10 card is being scanned by the phone periodically. This scan takes a LOT of time and 64GB would be even worse
If I find a phone that is equal to or better than Skyrocket + support exFAT I would go for the 64GB card in a heartbeat

thanks for the tip on FAT32format. my 64GB card showed up yesterday and i was fearing i had wasted money since i couldn't get it formatted to FAT32. i bought it after seeing that YouTube video (we've all probably seen it) to put in my Galaxy S i'm turning into a dedicated PMP. the phone wouldn't format it (would try but it would always say damaged) but this worked like a charm. i'm transferring my music collection as i speak. thanks again for the help!

Just a thought, cuz I haven't noticed anyone say this but from what I've read class 6 and 10 cards are not ideal for mobile phones because they are optimized for faster sequential read/write (ideal and fast for cameras). Class 4 is faster at random read/write than 6 and 10(ideal for phones).
I just purchases a sandisk 32gb class 4 and I've never had it randomly scan and I use it for music, photos, some app data, backups etc.

this is unfortunately somewhat true. Class 6 in the OP should be okay though. I'm currently in an RMA process with Sandisk and in talking to their Technical support they said :
"We need to take the few information from you in order to process the RMA request. There is an ongoing issue is with Sansa Ultra 64 GB SDXC class 10 Cards the one which you have and on Android phones we need to use the Sansa Ultra 64 GB SDXC class 6 in order to make it functional. It depends on your requirement so please let me know so we can proceed with the request."

THANK YOU! So much, you helped me out of a jam. Found a SanDisk Class 10 online for $64 and was freaking out when my phone wouldn't recognize it but using the FAT32format program through the Command Prompt worked like a charm so my deepest THANKS! :good:

First thread, so putting that out in advance.
I download ALOT of music, and since I wanted to sync lots of music from spotify to my phone and bring a few movies for traveling, I bought a Samsung SDXC 64GB class 10 microSD card from amazon on bf.
I've formatted it to fat32 (with guiFormat on windows and android itself), and my atrix will reconize it. But once I start syncing music to it it unmounts it after a variable amount of time.
Has anyone else been able to get a 64GB microsd to work with their atrix?

Aren't the bionic and atrix 2 the same?
Also, I'm running magic mod jb. I read somewhere that 4.0+ has issues with sdxc, could that be an issue?

Try formatting with a different allocation size to see if it works.
Atrix2 doesn't support NTFS or ex-fat, which some other phones do.

Yeah class 10 cards are known to have issues with this phone. It really has nothing to do with it being 64GB or not, that is causing it to dissapear or unmount, but the fact that it is a class 10 card. We have had way too many issues with anything higher than a class 6 card in the atrix2. It is also noted that the atrix2 really technically does not support SDcards higher than 32GB, but I have a 64GB card that I use in several of my phones that seems to work ok from time to time, but I only use it to move a file from one of my other phones to the A2 once in a while, so long term I really don't have a lot of info on that.

Ok, that makes sense. Too bad they don't sell class 6 anymore. So I should try to find a class 6 32gb card then instead of 10?

anything that is class 4 or class 6 is know to work with out issues, no matter the size.
I have 2 class 4 32GB cards that I bought just for this phone that were like 30 USD 6 or 10 months ago, so I am sure you can find a few really cheap now. I know that the whole class 4 or class 6 and the speed thing really tend to turn people off, but I can copy 20GB of music to one card in just over 1 - 1.5 hours, so it is not too bad.

Thanks a lot Jim! Yeah the 32gb is like $20 on Amazon, so I'll spring for a couple of those. Your right, I guess you really don't need that speed anyway (I can wait to transfer my music).

By the way my 32 class six is noticeably faster than my 16gb class 4...

Your SD card likely isn't the problem

I was going to post this in response to a couple of people in the development sections but my post count is too low so I'll post it here instead.
The SD slot in this phone seems to have an issue with corrupting SD cards, I've had to format both my old and new SD card multiple times with this phone as it becomes unusable every few days. I'm not versed enough in hardware to know if this is a bad connection between the SD slot and the "motherboard" of the phone. I've seen a number of people have their SD cards go bad with this phone and I assume that means we had a manufacturing issue. It would be really cool if a hardware hacker experiencing this issue could take a look inside and confirm whether or not the hardware is connected correctly.

Well, perhaps there's a high number of bad readers....
I've had the same card in my Q since the day I got it (mid-September), no issues.

Mine wouldn't read the day I swapped up from My Epic 4g Touch to This phone, So I popped in an sd reader backed up my data then let the Moto format it, no issues sence

I'm really hoping that I just had my old SD card die at a bad time and that my newer SD card was just sent bad. Today I couldn't get the card to read from the SD slot in my computer, and it would not be cool if my phone caused it to become that way.

No issues here. I tossed the crappy class 2/4 that shipped with my Epic long ago.

Well I found an extra class 4, 2 GB SD card lying around the house when I was cleaning today. It may be that the local shipment of phones was bad, so if this SD card goes on me then I'll try exchanging the phone in another town just to be safe.
Just out of curiosity does anyone know whether Sprint orders enough phones for replacements with their original shipments? I'm not from a very large town so I'd imagine they would keep replacing with phones from the same batch.

I've got a Samsung 32GB class 10 mSD.
Nearly everytime I reboot my Photon Q it says "SD Card is damaged".
Go into settings, Mount SD Card once or twice and it works.
I've read, that other Android Devices have also problems with that size of SD Cards. (Google)
I had also problem in recovery restoring a backup, the restore process didn't went correctly
(said that everything was fine), had to use my 2GB mSD, which worked nicely and the backup also.
So I think it's an android/kernel issue than a hardware issue.

I have noticed that I get the corrupt sdcard error everytime I try to use the "mass storage" or "media device" setting with Windows.
I use Ubuntu 99% of the time and leave it connected in "camera" mode, have never had that pop up like that...
I usually just use ADB to copy everything anyway so I do not miss the "mass storage" mode at all.

Just had a 16gb class 10 microcenter branded card go belly up on me. Phone just all of a sudden said it was removed and now nothing seems to recognize the thing. The mount option is completely greyed out, and does the same on my note 10.1 if i pop it in there.
When your cards have gone did they completely disappear and refuse to read?

You guys really shouldn't be using high class cards in a phone - there's really no benefit, as phones use SD card's very differently from camcorders or cameras...
On my ooooold phone, anything above Class6 was bad juju. I have always had class4 or lower cards, no fried cards (yet... lol)

kinda what I am feeling too. Not sure what class card I have but it was just a cheap 32gb from wallmart... Only had that error pop up once with this one though, and that was after trying to use usb storage.

Class 10 shouldn't make a difference to a device. The class/speed only comes in to play when transferring data from/to a computer, which will be faster on Class 10 vs Class 4 or 6.

As best as I can tell, thats a negative. Ive been running with a 32GB class 10 since around when the phone was released, and Ive had no issues. Quite surprising on its own, seeing as I abuse the poor thing. True that class 10 arnt useful for the phone specifically, but some shops only carry class 10 cards.

Maybe it's all down to the quality of the actual card itself?
Perhaps the cheaper no-name / off-name brands have a much higher failure rate....?
I'm not really sure, short of actual hardware issues on the device.

Well here is my experience:
I am using a new san disk 32GB class10 micro sdcard. It was never format ed/ used before. The q itself formated the disk.
I have had no problems until using the twisted asanti prebuild
Version. Since then I only got problems with the qu saying the sdcard would be corrupt, after reboot. ( I expected some additional wired things, like the currents widget, which I deleted before reboot reappeared). So I would suggest it is an error in un mounting the sdcard before shutdown, which causes this failure.
Since I usually do not reboot the phone expect for flashing new roms, I had no trouble since then.
Hope this might help to further circle the problem, and maybe find a solution for this.

Since CM10 I haven't noticed any SD-Card issues, but I have the feeling, that there are some issues, which aren't detected.
In the last few days my CM10 was acting weird.
1. The gallery (together with the camera app, 2in1 app) disappeared in the App Drawer (was still in /system/app) and didn't appear again after overwriting gallery2.apk again.
2. The Google Weather App had a graphical issue, so I was sure, that there was a flash issue by restoring ASA14 and flashing CM10 (from SD-Card!).
I solved this issue in copying the nandroid backup and CM10 to the phone and flash it from there.
I have tested my SD-Card in my external cardreader, it had no issues in doing so.
My guess is, that the SD-Card needs more power than the Photon Q can give and is losing some read/write commands.

I think This may have hit the nail on the head. I have had a couple cheap discount cards die but they really died. Cant even read in the PC and one even got really hot when plugged in. Got a good branded card from amazon and havent had a problem since.

I've used better Samsung and Sandisk cards and have had this issue. It just randomly wipes all my data and creates the LOST.DIR with it all in there, but file names are all renamed and would takes years to sort through and try to figure out what is what. All my photos, music, etc.. were basically gone then. It didn't matter that the card was a name-brand or not. I've had the issue with several cards.

I constantly have this problem as well, and I've found that mounting the SD card with a reader or in another phone in a Linux environment fixes it for the most part. I think files still get lost, but you get most of what you had back.

I got a 32GB UHS1 card last week and it hasn't had a problem.

at first I just sighed to myself.. 'the s4 if another sd card destroyer'. I checked around the forum, but didn't see any similar topics, so I thought maybe it was just me.. but now my buddy who got an s4 on t mobile picked up one of the 64gb sd cards, and just got the same notification.. so what gives? *(pic related)

I've heard a lot of people having problems with the Sandisk cards. Myself included, my 16gb I had in my S3 got totally messed up.
I tried reformatting and it was a no-go, totally dead.
Since then I bought a 32GB Class 10 Samsung Card. Never had an issue since.

It may have to do with the formatting of the SD card. While playing around with my new Samsung 32GB card, I found my S4 displaying that message (even though it worked fine on my computer) every time the card was formatted as exFat. Fat32 seems to work fine.

I have that same issue, however, it also happened to me with my S3. I ended up have to format the card in the phone and copy everything back onto the card again for it to work. so far it's okay right now. This is still the same card, Sandisk Ultra 64gb micro SDXC. Both my wife note 2 and buddy S3 use the same type and they never had any problem with "damaged sd card". I'm thinking OP and I both are just the bad luck one with a bad card or two. I'm thinking of calling in for warranty from Sandisk to see if it's the card that's damaged.

This issue happened to me, but only once. After the OTA update, after reboot I saw this. But instead of formatting like the message suggested (I already had gigs of stuff on the card), I went into the settings and Dismounted the card and remounted it.
Haven't had an issue since.
Maybe you can try it to see if it works for you.

My s4 has been fine with it but when I had a skyrocket it was having major issues.

It is best to format fat32...period, no issues will ever occur. I have been using a 64g since it hit the market...it is so old there is no markings left on it..hehe

S4 here and 64gb class 10 that originally was in my S3. No problems yet. Think I might be fat 32.

Mine's Sandisk, Class 10, UHS-1, 64GB in exFAT.

Samung class 10 32gb pulled right out my og note and slapped in my s4 and have had no problems.

This is a common issue in all devices with sd's, especially devices that move physically.
Put 1 or more pieces of scotch tape on the non contact side of the card and cut to size. This will reduce the amount of movement of the card during write events to the card, which is the culprit of why these cards get corrupted.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who is having this problem. This thing destroyed my 16gb lexar that I've had for a few years. Mount option went gray, and I couldn't even open it on the computer. I was trying to make sym links to move my Google Music to it, but yeah. It's a little disappointing, but I wanted to get a 64gb anyway... Is the secret to use Samsung SD cards? Either way, it was time for a new one.

you know you could use the PC command chkdsk -r -f to fix damaged sdcards?

from what i've been reading about the 64gb sandisk cards, they work better formatted as exfat than fat32. samsung is one of only a few mobile phones that support the exfat format. when you try to format a sandisk 64gb class 10 card, it will eventually become corrupt. that's why they come as exfat. also, formatting it to fat32 will indeed slow down the speed transfers of the card.

I will try that when I get a hold of it again along with disk utility when I boot up mac next, but currently it's blue screening my laptop when I try to use it. (Running a bootcamp of windows 8 means weird bugs are lurking around every corner)

Happened on my Note 2, guess these new Samsung phones don't play well with SanDisk cards.

Friends s4 didn't like any brand but Samsung. I did however notice a lot of bad reviews on all 64gb micro sd cards except the Samsung one. Based on the reviews I bought the Samsung 64gb class 10 and had zero issues. A bit more expensive but you know what they say.

My 64GB Sandisk Class 10 has been damaged 3 times since getting my GS4. I sync my 40GB of music and takes all night to do this. It can be annoying, but when it happens I re-sync when I go to bed.

MicroSD card

I just bought a new 64GB PNY Pro Elite microSDXC for this tablet, and every time I try to move a file, an app, or anything to the card, I'm given an error. It says unable to move. Not enough storage space. I read somewhere else that people had trouble with the 64GB cards, but the 32GB cards worked fine. Has anyone had issues with the 64GB MicroSD card?

Odd, I've never seen that issue on mine, not on the 64GB nor on the 128GB(which is my regular card).
Mind you, I only use Sandisk, and never a lower-tier brand. Too many problems when you use anything other than Sandisk or Samsung cards.

If you have an sd-card reader/writer for pc, googling you can find several utilities to thoroughly test your card.
If the card is OK and you are rooted you can try sdfix, a free utility that fixed random write access problems to the sd-card on my tablet after the upgrade to lollipop

Well, I found a few other people who had the same issue, and they used a command line app on their PC called fat32format, which formats devices above 32GB. They said it fixed their problem, but I didn't think MicroSD cards on an Android device were formatted FAT32.
Either way, as ShadowLea said, I normally use Samsung and/or SanDisk cards and have never had a problem taking it out of the box and plugging it in. I ordered this card because the description read 95MB/s read time, but if I'm not mistaken, Samsung and SanDisk both have cards like this. Since I just received it and have 30 days to exchange it, I think I'm going to send it back. I shouldn't have to use any app to get it working correctly right out of the box. I guess this is what I get from deviating from the norm.
