I want to use my HOX without the SIM, because I can't afford the data plan anymore. Is there a way for me to forward things (like calls, SMS, etc.) from my non-smartphone to my HOX?
Currently running the latest ViperXL rom.
Nope

WiFi plus google voice and another app will give you sms and calling and voicemail when connected to WiFi. Cut down the normal sim and get the other useless phone out of the equation

Most carriers pay attention to what phone you have and let you know that they will adjust your plan according to the phone, so putting this sim in then phone is going to increase his bill

I didn't know calling and texting had different rates based on the phone. I thought his data was turned off or getting shut off soon

Well they don't but with a smart phone most carriers require you have a data plan, they see your new phone and force the data plan on you

I understand that but if that smartphone doesn't have any service you can't forward calls/texts
My suggestion is to either get a prepaid plan that works with your needs for this phone and get rid of the dumb phone or get a regular plan like everyone else

I got my HOX through AT&T in the Summer, but the price for the mobile network (which I never use due to its cap) is too much. I am part of a family plan, and it would be considerately more costly if I left it before my contracts were up.

So they will allow you to drop the data but they won't let you use the hox without data?

AT&T will automatically add a data plan to your contract if you are using any smartphone. The rates are terrible ($20 for less than 1Gb) and once the limit is reached, they charge you again instead of stopping the service.
Sorry to hear that. Must be how they can afford to give away $500 phones for next to nothing.

The $15/month unlimited data feature is supposed to only be for QMP's (Quick Messaging Phones), since it's basically just a MediaNet perk.

You can try enabling the $15/mo plan by doing the following:
Find yourself a really old phone that has medianet capabilities. Put your sim card in it and wait a couple hours for ATT's network to recognize the IMEI. Go online and manage your account's features and change your data plan to $15/mo unlimited MediaNet plan. Take SIM card out, put in android phone and celebrate. I've done this trick before on other phones a while back and I'm not sure if ATT has fixed this bug or not but it always worked without a hitch and they never caught it.

same for me im runing 15$ data plan from way back when...upgrade to LG VU with 15$ unlimitedd data bcuz its a (multimedia pnone and not a smart phone) then in high baught a blackberry off of friend data worked, found an iphone 3gs 16 in venice tried to return to owner but it was locked, jailbroke it had it for a year, i had to change the APN with unlockit.co.nz. now i upgraded to Inspire with my sisters contract told them to switch numbers so i kept my old sim, still 15$ unlimited data but i had to search and manually change the APN on the inspire to get 3g to work. If anyone has that problem and needs help ill be glad to help you out
ive gotten the $15 unlimited data too, havent been caught yet

I had the $10 unlimited data plan with my fuse and tilt2 up until I upgraded to this phone last month. I'm confused as to why the letter says Congrats on your new inspire and offers me a dumb phone data plan and I'm secretly hoping it might be a loyalty or secret data plan haha. I still haven't called them yet but I will definitely update you guys once I do.
And you don't even have to wait a few hours to do the sim trick. Last time I did it, I just popped it in my old phone and called them and gave them the imei for that phone. Worked like a charm for 2 years until I had to upgrade and change my data plan to get this phone (which ultimately I got for free lol).

hahahah i'm sorry i'll do it first thing in the morning tomorrow, it's been a busy day. Tomorrow morning, I promise!
I have had this since 1997. The down side is that I had to do it with a WinMo phone for too long.

The long awaited update...but it won't satisfy.
So I called ATT a little while back (ironically I had an issue where I couldn't dial numbers for half an hour, even after pulling the sim, so I couldn't even dial ATT's number!). After I got that sorted out, I asked about the letter. I mentioned that it specifically says my name and phone (Inspire 4g) on it so it was directly mentioning my phone and not sent for another line in my family...all of us have smartphones anyways. she put me on hold for some time and came back and basically reviewed all the data plans with me (something i was already aware of......) and said they don't offer that plan. After a little more of bugging her that it was sent to ME with MY PHONE and said $15 unlimited data, she said that I can fax in a copy of it to customer service and that they would research it and get back to me within 3-7 business days.
Basically it's getting sent to someone else to review and research. I'llkeep you guys posted and see if i can wiggle my way into a custom data plan
So I had the Inspire 4G on AT&T and my girlfriend became an ex and now I don't have service. I was wondering if I can swap the ROM to a Verizon ROM and run it on their network. Please help.
Short answer, no. The long answer has to do with radio frequencies and technology used. For voice and 2G data you could use T-mobile. You may have a regional service provider option also. I do not know what is available in your area.
No you can't. ATT is gsm and Verizon is cdma. You could use it on tmobile if its unlocked but will only get edge speeds.

Your best option is to sell the phone now, while its hot and get some good money off of it and buy another phone.
I personally am still pretty new to rooting and all but doesn't verizon have sim cards for their world phones?
Thanks for the information, I didn't think I would be able to. It is rooted but I need to do a complete wipe on the phone and return it to stock with root. Thanks for the help and hopefully I will be able to sell this with some scuffs on it. Maybe just try for $100 rooted.
or unlock it and use simple mobile... unlimited everything for like 60 bucks a month, ( and 3g ) no contract. but check coverage.. etc....
Why not do the most simple thing get a pay as you go phone. Swap the sim into the inspire. $50 unlimited everything. Don't try telling me it wont work either. I have used two different iphones and a blackberry on pay as you go. And dont try the different sim thing either. When I went contract they had me use the same sim. Just go get a cheap pay as you go phone register it swap the sim and try it out.
Buddy 3g won't work. The frequency bands are not compatible with tmkbile(simple mobile). Unless you got Att or a side branch that runs off at towers and signal, you will ONLY get Edge speeds end of story. Don't proven using tmobile and simple mobile.

Ok I tried to keep this nice but sense you you want to get rude about it. Let me let you in on a little secret, for the past few months att has been locking the prepaid sim cards to the phone by IMEI they are activated on for 6 months. The only way to have it unlocked is by calling them to get it unlocked in which case they want the imei of the new phone. They have also implamented the IMEI scan they do for the contract lines. So even if you have an older sim card that is not locked, After a while then will notice and data will stop working. Now How do I know this you ask? I just spent the last year as the Store manager for a local ATT retail store. So the next time you decide to be rude, you might want to take a min and think that maybe, just maybe you dont have all the facts.
And I do stand corrected on the pay-per use data. That was what it did before they started blocking it.

What's up guys. NOOB HERE. Cut me some slack. I currently own a iPhone 4s on att. I just got a good deal on a rooted Skyrocket.

When they identify your phone as a smartphone, they don't do it through the data you send them, they don't through your imei number which is broadcast to att via your sim. So an app or rom won't do you any good. I can't speak for att, but tmobile has a similar policy with all smartphones requiring data but i have used a Nokia n8 on their network for 2 years without anyone tacking on a data plan.

I'm on at&t prepaid $2/day without data - so far. I bought a data package before they changed their policy to monthly only for smartphones plus data package. I don't talk/text every day, so $2/day seemed worth trying. When they switched policies, I just did not buy a data package and as far as I know, I don't have at&t data access. But I have been able to use my phone for calls. Don't know what will happen when my $100 runs out, but that will probably be several months from now. Meantime I have a mobile hotspot I can use if out and about and think it necessary to check emails.

I'm pretty sure AT&T will add a data plan systematically to any smartphone detected.
I think the only way around that is using a phone that isn't AT&T branded, like an unlocked TMo or international phone. They do some sort of IMEI match I think.

What does that mean exactly, that the phone simply won't work at all (even for voice and EDGE)? Or that it will only work on voice and EDGE? Or it will work on 3G HSPA, but not 4G HSPA+?

My understanding is that ATT checks the IMEI of the phone accessing data and if it is a phone with 4G capability it blocks it completely. No EDGE, no 3G, nothing, no data access. You may be able to skirt by for a while until they track you down and cut you off, but it is only a matter of time until you are cut off. Voice should work.

So beat me if needed. I have a new att one x coming today. If i get it unlocked, and use a straight talk sim that is a tmobile sim, should i not get the same speeds as a $30 tmobile 5gig plan? I live in mpls and right now get great speed on my n4 with a $30 plan. Thanks b4 and after.
Short answer is probably not sorry
The n4 is pentaband and gets all of tmobiles bands. The att one x might get 3g on T-Mobile depending on the refarming in your area. Chances are it won't be as strong or consistent as the n4

Exactly what I tried and depending on ur area u may get 3g. I ended up with only edge speeds.

If youre on straight talk just buy a att SIM. Att has just as good of coverage in Minneapolis.

Straight Talk stopped offering new AT&T SIM cards a month or two ago. The only option for new customers is T-Mobile SIM cards

Why would they do that? I guess I got mine in time. The one xl would be useless in my opinion stuck on edge speed
