What modem and rpm works best on your phone... - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I have amazing results using J, which is why I have not upgraded to K. Can't see how much better it can be, anyone use both and have an opinion?
Worst for me was I.
How about everyone else, just curious to know.

I'm on I535VRLHD and that's the one I'm going to stay with for a while. I tried the later ones and had serious battery drain issues.

HD was great but used more battery...K1/J1 seem to have the best balance of signal/battery life...didnt notice much difference between the two.

I honestly haven't noticed any difference in any of them including stock. Of course I haven't really don't much testing as I am in a good signal area.

I will probably update to the newest one if there is another release when official jelly bean finally gets here.

[Q] Best rom for service ONLY all other variables aside?

First off I apologize if there is another thread about this but all I found when searching was a general "best rom", and one related to battery life.
Personally I would like to know opinions on best rom for connectivity only. I live in a strong 4G area but whenever I am in my basement I get spotty connectivity, drop calls and such. I have been on the CM10 nightlies crack flashing since the boot-loader was unlocked. I love CM10 just wondering for basic call quality, does someone have a different rom preference for call quality?
Again mods I apologize if this is out there... but i couldn't find one for call quality. I realize this all depends on the baseband and such which Samsung is infamous for theirs. I just feel like even a slight better signal would make a big difference for me considering generally it's good connection.
Also my office is in my basement and I make a lot of calls and I'd prefer to keep it that way if possible.
Any thoughts are appreciated.
I'd actually like to know this as well. I recently switched from using an iphone to a Samsung Galaxy S3 and the difference with this phone is there are so many different roms available, I don't know which one is the best whereas with the iphone there is usually 1 main jailbreak and everything else is provided by cydia.
Like you said, this mainly is based on the radio and not on the Rom, but i agree there could be some minor differences. Your best bet would be to try a couple out and see how they work in your office. I personally am running jellywiz and my signal is rock sold and i work in low signal areas a lot.

If you search the forum there is actually a main thread for best rom overall which may help you more since it doesn't seem your only concern is call quality. Sorry I don't have the thread name but I think if you do a forum search for "best rom" you should be able to find that thread.

I actually planned on doing that and testing them out on my own, I was just hoping someone may have some tips on one they have used in areas such as a basement or a place they know they haven't always gotten good service but have found a rom that works great for them as far as call quality. Such as your example of jellywiz, I will certainly give that a try and see if I can hold a higher consistency for call quality. Thanks for your input!
There are definetly differences between ROMs relative to battery life... different versions of the same ROM can be quite different.
I've been using Jellywiz as my DD and it's been great. I really liked RLS4. I've updated to RLS5 this morning but my battery life has declined greatly. I've also gotten one reboot. I'm sure the dev will have it fixed in the next release (the Devs on the Jellywiz project are top notch).
I also liked Synergy quite a lot... It's not Jelly Bean, but the battery life was great and very stable!
The best thing you can do is try several different ones... Let the ROM settle for a good day or two before coming to any conclusions...
Good luck...

Without getting too granular, stock based roms have the best reception. Rom's where the RIL has had to be tweaked, such as CM, MIUI, JellyBean ports, and cross carrier ports are more likely to have radio issues.
Then, there are different radios you could flash. In my experience with many devices, changing radios has never had much of an impact on radio reception. Different radio versions generally fix bugs, and things like 3g/4g switching. For instance the latest stock radio for our device (VRLG7) fixes the "no SIM" bug. I am using that and it has worked great for me.
Generally though, I don't think actual reception (mostly dependent on hardware) should vary too much. Usually it's reliability that can vary. "Bars" aren't always an accurate indicator of reception either, signal strength in dBm is.

Sorry... I got lost in an unrelated thought (battery life)....
The service side appears to be pretty sold from the ROMs that I've personally tried. Not sure you'll find a big difference here in real world performance.

I have not seen the 4G indicator since flashing a week or more ago. I have tried aokp, cm10, and root66.
Not sure what to do. The phone works fine otherwise. All these are great but I would never have gone this route if I had any thought that wireless capabilities would be reduced. Any ideas on how to return to 4G would be greatly appreciated.
Out of all the 4.1 roms out there, JellyWiz's wifi/4G/3g is the most solid one. Very stable and good enough to be a DD.

[Q] What is the best JellyBean based TouchWiz Rom and why?

I really like TouchWiz on GS3 but since we have no idea when VZ is going to approve the JB version of it (hopefully soon, but who knows), I like to know which current Rom you guys think is the best.
Of course this is very subjective, but everything is on the table.
I'm looking for answers along the lines of:
I prefer rom-X
Pros: its fast, unbloated and stable
Cons: 3G/4G handoff is hit or miss, camera app is poor.
Something along those lines would be great.
Thanks in advance

Flash each and try it yourself. JB ROMs seem to have random issues that some people experience. Nandroid your current setup and give a few a shot. It's the best way to find out what works for you, and not for others.
Personally I like clean rom the best.

Of course I'm already doing that, I'm looking at JellyWiz now. However it can take days to put a rom through its paces
I just wanted to get some opinions from others. For example I might only talk on my phone once or twice a month(I mostly use sms). I wouldn't want to leave town, decide to make a phone call and find out that the 9 button on the dialer doesn't work. Conversely, for the life of me I can't figure out why anyone would want to use voice search (S-voice, Siri, whatever). If that happens to be broken in a specific rom I couldn't care less.

Cleanrom is an ICS touchwiz rom. It should be very stable.
Jellybean is being built without source, Jellywiz has been running great. Minor flaws but they vary from person to person, phone to phone. The best way is to backup and give them a try!! Your the only one that can decide what's stable enough for you.

Hate to say it but TW Roms on the S3 FTW.
Nothing more stable then the TW Roms we have for the Verizon S3. AOSP is just not there yet and who knows if it will ever be. After coming from a GNEX, you really see AOSP was not meant for any other devices and is loaded with problems when using anything else then a Nexus device.
Would love to get another Nexus device but who knows if Verizon will ever see one again and no other network is really good enough to pull me away right now.
Also, Google's claim about no LTE on the Nexus 4 due to bad battery, did anyone at Google try the S3? I would hardly call 4 hours of on screen time over LTE bad battery. They need to look past the GNEX which for whatever reason was a disaster when it came to battery. My wife's Rezound with like a 1650mAh battery gets as much screen on time then my GNEX did with a 2100mAh battery. Knock knock, don't we think something was wrong there!
Actually, I used the Thunderbolt I had previous to the GS3 for over a year on AOSP and it was AT LEAST as stable as the stock rom...probably more so. It just took time for it to get there. Saying that AOSP will never be stable is just...well, hogwash...Right now it's questionable. The roms are stable, it's just data that has a bit of an issue. If you're in a great reception area, there's no reason to not use it. Fringe areas, well, there are pros and cons.

I never said it will never be there I said who knows if it will get there. The Thunderbolt was never stable on stock so saying AOSP was just as stable is not saying much. lol
Signal is important to many people. If I was not worried about signals I would not be on Verizon paying their hight prices. I would be paying half the price for service running a Nexus 4 on a crappy GSM network. There are more issues then just signal and sure eventually they may all get worked out but so many people here jump devices so often we never get to see the final product if one is produced.
All I am saying is TW Roms have been so good on the S3 I cannot imagine sacrificing the stability at this point for an AOSP rom and trust me I would love to run AOSP. I never knew how good it felt until the GNEX which was my first Nexus device. Man, did AOKP rule on that phone.
I am currently using this rom. The only problems I seem to have are GPS locks, and the speaker phone echo. Supposedly some work was done on the echo, so perhaps a wipe is need to reap the benefits. At this point, once those two problems are fixed I would consider it a daily driver for anyone.
I don't use NFC or bluetooth, so I am unaware of problems related to those features.
Bass Issue
I'm not really sure if there is an exact stable build since the supposed stable build had Bluetooth issue by not giving the bass

theres a zip youll find, as well as instructions.

enable NFC (might as well get a GPS lock also)
restore nandroid

For the NFC issue, I believe that the CM10 thread includes a flashable zip or APK to fix the NFC: see this thread.
I do have a general question. I have been running CleanROM 5.6 but wanted to know how "stable" CM10 is in comparison to CleanROM. I understand that I'd be missing out on some Touchwiz features (motions, smartstay, powersave), but I am most concerned w/ battery life and data connection, particularly as I find myself never using the Touchwiz features anyway.
I am finding that reception on my S3 is inferior to my Razr M - for example, where I would get 3G or 4G signal on my M, I was getting 1x or no data on my S3. From what I've also read, data on the CM ROMs is inferior to the data on the TW ROMS. Can anyone confirm this?
Also, w/ battery life, I've also read that battery life on CM ROMS is inferior to that of Touchwiz. In any case, I am finding that the battery life on the S3 in general is inferior to that of the Razr M given my use. Specifically, I push my work email, read and respond to emails, browse the web a little bit, a few phone calls and text messages, and some FB use. On the Razr M, I was consistently getting about 36 hours of use, whereas, on the S3, I have been barely able to get 24 hours. If battery life on TW is already inferior to that of the Razr M, I am not willing to sacrifice battery life further by going with CM10.
In addition to battery and consistent data, are there any other bugs/issues w/ the CM10 stable that I should be aware of (tethering, BT connectivity, low call volume, speakerphone echo, etc.)?
Lastly, I assume that CM10 stable does not have the multitude of bugs that the present version of CM10.1 has?

Why continue to flash new Roms?

I'm certain this has been brought up before Several thousand times, but I gotta ask again...What is it that drives people to constantly flash new Roms/updates every couple days or even weeks?
I have been running cleanRom 3.0 and having no issues, no bugs, GREAT battery life. Why would I change that? I know CleanRom 5.0 has come out, but what would be the point to update if 3.0 is working perfectly and spot on?
Is it that people get bored?
Is it that people wonder what is different?
just makes me wonder.
Im guilty of this myself. I believe a rooted debloated with a theme of your choice is the way to go
iSheep... iSheep... Meowww that's Apple
see whats different, see customizations, battery life, other random usually rom exclusive features.
ive probably flashed 75% of the roms available for this device just to see what theyre all about.
it helps me help other people, and helps me make my device my own.
most of the times its out of boredom and i restore my daily driver rom
Because updates to the ROM = possibly better phone
I prefer stability but I like changing stuff on my phone. I'll stay on a rom for a few weeks and not change a thing but the entire time I'll want to flash something even if I have no reason too smh Ultimately, I'm just not satisfied with what ships out the box.

To have the latest and greatest rom.
Bug fixes and improvements. Plain and simple.
I've been trying to find the best Rom for what I do every day, but there are always little problems that bug me on every Rom. I damaged Clean Rom 5.0 and have finally stopped the daily flashing. This is as close as I well get to the prefect Rom.

And I get what everyone has said. BUT for those of us that prefer performance (i.e. great battery life, no issues/bugs, fast speeds) over "new'ness", once you find a Rom that gives you the best of all worlds, why would you even worry about the latest? I have been on CleanRom 3.0 for since a couple weeks after it came out. ONLY reason I went to it was because I wasn't happy with the 4 Roms I tried before. Those 4 Roms I tried prior all had bugs or poor battery life that I wasn't happy with. Now that I am Happy with EVERYTHING, I dont plan on changing.
And don't get me wrong here, I know that just because I am satisfied and not wanting to flash doesn't mean that others will be content with that. Nobody needs to tell me that. I'm not trying to debate, just trying to see how others here think.
Because it is great to see the capability of your device by exploring different roms and it is so darn addicting.

Because the majority of us here at XDA who root our phones and flash ROMs are tech junkies. Technology is like a drug to many of us. We are never content and always need the next fix, whatever the latest and greatest may be.
CleanROM 5.0 is built on the latest Jelly Bean leak, which has many improvements over the Ice Cream Sandwich base that CleanROM 3.0 is built on.
mmmmm rom flashing!!!!

I'm like you in that I don't want to potentially compromise the stability and functionality of my phone without significant incentive. For me the incentive was new functionality and increased performance. I've only flashed three roms other than stock.
CleanROM 3.1 was the first ROM I flashed, and as you said, it's stable with great battery life and pretty smooth. The smooth operation of my phone is what made me cautious about jumping to the first JB leak. Instead I kept track of the CR, stock leak, and Jelly Beans threads and read up on the bugs and issues.
Ultimately what I was reading about Google Now and Project Butter made me realize that I really wanted Jelly Bean and the few known issues in JB leak #2 were not enough to stop me from flashing Jelly Beans Build 2. I don't regret that decision, Jelly Beans is a cool rom with a nice AOSP theme, ran really smooth, and generally gave me good battery life (depending on what I was running). Also Google Now is really really cool.
Then I was reading about AOSP roms like LiquidSmooth RC9 and SlimBeans 3.1 that were about the come out. It seems like those teams had dedicated developers who were squashing existing bugs. With the remaining bugs pretty much known, but the ROMs otherwise stable I decided to give LiquidSmooth a shot. The motivation here was to really rid myself of all the stuff Samsung had running in the background, with touchwiz it seems like there are a million things classified under "Android System" when trying to diagnose a battery drain. With AOSP when I look at battery stats Screen and Cellular Calls are the only apps that really make a dent. I also like the clean styling, functionality, and flexibility of the AOSP lockscreen and UI in general.
Unless I encounter any other problems I will probably wait for a stable AOSP 4.2.1 rom to come out so I can try the new features there and hopefully some bug fixes for the bluetooth audio issues in 4.1.2.
I m coming from a tbolt i now have a verizon s3(unrooted so far) n I m guilty of "being in search of a perfect rom". What drove me to search was claims of better battery life, quicker and stable. What drove me back to my daily driver(skyraider) was frequent reboots( while googlemaps), applications not working(slingbox in particular ) inability to view video(live streams from my church).
I m currently doing research for the perfect rom for my S3 as I just activated the s3 yesterday (n I'm missing having a rooted phone) and I m resisting the urge to root!

If everything works it just means you aren't running the latest and greatest.
You must tweak your phone until something breaks.
Then you search for the next fix.
It is the path that must be followed.

Reasons why Stay away From Ice Cream and Jelly Bean Customs Roms

Reasons Why
1- Battery Life, your phone drain the battery very quickly, i tried many ICS and Jelly Bean roms and all of them the same thing with battery.
2- Phone perfomances, theses rom slowdown your systems.
3- Wifi signal is really poor, i did everything to get my signal strong as GingerBread was, but nothing works.
4- Unstable system, sometimes you have randoms reboots. No Matter what rom you use.
The best rom for this phone is GingerBread(Custom or Stock) until now, cause all those custom of Jelly Bean and Ice Cream, have many bugs.
So think about it before you flash ICS OR Jelly Bean. i have to use [Heimdall][One-Click] to go back, since i go back to GingerBread everything is back to normal.
My phone now is rooted, custom recovery and Stock GingerBread 2.3.6 the perfect combination for me now.
REMEMBER THIS JUST ON T959V..
1) Depends on your settings mostly. Some people have gotten >6 days battery out of ICS.
2) Mine is WAY faster than GB. This is in line with most people's results as well.
3) The wifi is actually the same strength. Bars show lower, because GB lied. Change it to dB and you'll see.
4) Your battery is dying. Not ICS/JB fault that you have faulty hardware.
Good that you like GB though. Have fun.

It seems like u have just wake up from a long sleep from the cave my friend.. you cannot justify that some of the ICS and JB roms we have all of the bad
things you have mentioned. i am currently on ICS AOKP which for me the close to stock and stable ICS. i can agree with you about JB which just arrive
in this phone not so long ago on which our great dev's are still looking for solution for some major problem exist..
Its your choice to stay on what you think its good for you and what you think the best choice. Not all of us here may agree with your statement right now
because some of the people here already jumping into JB.. I hope you can search a little more to find out on how to provide a good and stable rom for your
phone rather that whining the bad things you have experience..
I'm on ICS and haven't experienced 1 random reboot in a year, while I had many on GB. Memory management and availability is far superior compares to GB and Wifi strength seems the same. Battery is the same unless you have a dying battery which is possible.
P.S what's your point?
sent from me
LOL, i never got any on ICS, but I did on GB and JB, but on JB, I only get one once every month or two, so I don't mind.
Everyone who says they get crappy battery life needs to spend a week with a rom not installing anything else that didn't come with the phone. It'll be a good experiment. You'll get to see how much random apps drain your phone's battery with so many wakelocks, etc.
Again, if you wanna see your phone get great battery life on ICS/JB, DON'T INSTALL ANY APPS for a week.
I wonder if people with bad battery life use GPS. I noticed on ICS that once I use GPS no matter with what program the phone goes unstable and sometimes starts to discharge rapidly. The GPS is flaky at best anyway, once it would start, next time it wouldn't, no real pattern to it and nothing interesting in the logs. I found that after using it it's better to reboot right away to avoid troubles.
I don't experience any of the problems you seem to address on Cyanogenmod 9.
way-to-go on the discouragement... so sad, then next week you'll be asking why development is slow.
the energy used to create this thread would have been better spent discussing what makes android great (freedom, freedom to choose the rom off your choice) without being biased by disgruntled users.

Im not saying anything bad about android, because android is and will be the best os for smartphones, all my devices are android.

Slim JB is like 85MB. the 512MB is no problem for that. And it's fast. Faster than GB ever was.

Except that the issues you listed are just plain wrong. They either aren't true, or are due to something else. As I broke down your reasons points by point earlier, they're either due to bad hardware (your battery, 2 of the reasons you gave), bad software (your programs sucking down the battery and making the hardware worse), GB/Samsung lying (showing more Wifi bars to make you think it has a better signal strength even when the dB is the same), or bad scheduler/governor choices.
And then you present this as truth... note the title you gave it. Reasons why Stay away From.... not Reasons why I Stay away From. Your presentation is either useless... we don't really care why you don't like it for yourself; we're not judging you if you go back to GB... or worse, demotivational for the developers doing the actual work. If you have something useful to share with the class, do it. This doesn't qualify. And if you don't want to get judged, you'll do much better if you aren't blaming the developers for your dying battery.

I used slim and it was very buggy, battery drain and poor wifi was the main problem.

Wifi isn't officially working on the latest Slim, so not sure what one you tried. I only managed to get wifi working for 4.2.2 last night, so it wasn't that one, and a lot of the JB rom's released are early stages. My point was that JB runs fine on our phone CPU and limited space.

You are so wrong , cause since i go back to GB , i dont have none of the problem i write before....... Thats my opinion if you want to use it i dont care.. i just alerting new users....
If im lying why some developers said that still has no found an answer for the poor wifi or simply look most of the ics and jellybean custom rom post and you will find thousand of users describing what i saying...... I also opened a post describing my problems and no one could answered...
I'm not discouraging developers, I am encouraging them to do a better job.
I thanks to all them for the great job that they made...
I have no problems with you presenting your anecdotal experiences.
I have MAJOR issues with you presenting your impressions of what's happening as truth for new users who don't understand that you're causing your own issues. This is XDA developers, not XDA noobs. If you don't understand why you're causing your own issues, at a certain point there's nothing we can do to help you understand.
I also have issues with you implying that the unpaid developers suck and should just do better work. But hey, I'll try to leave you with your opinions.
Just please... in the future... try to make it VERY clear that you're presenting your opinions, not anything that other people should actually use to make their decisions.
Your experiences? Not in synch with the people who don't install broken programs or who read OPs and the like. Why? Who knows. But people will hopefully make their own decisions based on their phone and how they use it, not based on a "This is why you, the newbie, should avoid JB/ICS" post.

You're obviously doing something wrong if gingerbread is smoother than jellybean. Come back when you learn how to flash a rom correctly
