[Q] Best alternative for text messaging? - Samsung Infuse 4G

We're currently paying $30 a month for unlimited text messaging, but pretty soon everyone in the family is going to have a smartphone. Once everyone is upgrade, we're planning on taking out the texting plan. What are some of the best alternatives for text messaging that also keeps my phone number? The only one I found on the Internet was WhatsApp and Google Voice, and I was wondering if I was missing any. I'd also appreciate it if you could tell me the pros and cons of each. Thank you ^^

U can try we chat

Not sure how you feel about it but I lowered my bill almost 50 bucks by going to the family shared plan. We have 5 smart phones so it made sense for us. Unlimited texting is included.

We thought about it, but since there are only 3 phones in our family, it was more expensive to use the family shared plan.

Does it keep my phone number?

Gosms has a go chat option. Looks like a text message but goes over the WiFi or network I believe. No sure if the recipient needs to use it too though. Also there's like a million themes for it.

Google voice. Its the best.
Best part is you can only hand out your Google voice number and have it ring to your cell phone so no one has your real number. You can change it anytime you want

If you didn't know, t-mobile doesnt deduct minutes from your plan when using the stock wifi calling app.....even though it says it does in the notification bar....so thanks but ill stock with the free version.

But u still have to pay a monthly service fee. This is an alternative used to come up on the man. Stick with the free app. (I wont lose any sleep.) It just doesn't do the same thing. Werd.

I dont pay any monthly service fee, I pay for my plan which is 79.99+ tax. I get no service at my house so I'm always connected to wifi. Doesn't cost anything extra, doesn't use my monthly plan minutes. So what does this app do that is so special/different than the stock app. I wont be losing any sleep either. WORD.

How do you text other countries and only get charged normal rates or nothing????

How do you text other countries and only get charged normal rates or nothing????
U.S.A. to VENEZUELA
Any ideas? How to do this???
I like to explore all the free options first. Then any paid options after that.
My job will pay for any apps or service that I have to add to my phone.
This is for a G2X.

I know with Google Voice you can text Canadian numbers for free. That's the only international texting they support right now though.
Something like kik maybe? If not then hopefully your trying to reach canada.
Unfortunately, t-mobile charges an extra 5¢ for every additional unnecessary question mark used. :/
So careful with that.

I pay an extra $5 a month and that gives me unlimited text to something like 100-150 countries... I would use kik messenger, pingchat or liveprofile to send messages but almost everyone I know abroad uses BBM (for the free text messaging capabilities)... I hope RIM releases BBM for android soon
Actually to Venezuela.
My job nominated me figuring I had a such a hi tech phone.
And that I could figure it out, And make it work.
I have to keep in contact and keep in touch with my contact in Venezuela via text messages.
Then I have to forward text messages to my boss.
It's a long complicated story.

I tried to find the list of supported countries on the website but it only showed the rates withoout the plan..
You can call T-Mobile and ask about Venezuela and they will tell you in a second if it is one of those countries that is in the unlimited messaging (I have unlimited domestic messaging ie... even more plus 500 min, unlimited text and data before the 2gb throttle btw)
Ok will do tomorrow. Thanks for looking.

Calling would be icing on the cake. The text messages are to have a written record of certain things.
Where do I look or where I can look to see what countries Google voice support calling for free?

Nope...once you go to SM you are free of T-Mo. However, if you use Wifi calling or other T-Mo branded items you will not be able to use them on SM.
I did have a data loss last week with Simple here in Sacramento. They had tower issues. But nothing else of consequence.
One issue that I have had. On virtually every ROM is editing the APN. YOu can usually edit it once, but when you go back in often the APN's do not show up. Food for thought.
Lol. Hmm thank God. I'm going to get sm tomorrow. Thank you very much.

Actually you can and do get 4g depending on where you are located. I am in Sacramento and get 4g speeds on SM.
Your plan also has to do with speeds. If yo are on the $40.00 plan yes, you are restricted to 3g. If you pay $60.00 then you get 4G.
And no you do not have to unlock for SM.
They do offer a $60/month plan that has 4G. As usual the giant word plastered all over their website and retailers is "unlimited" - which, as we all know, is a load of crap. Yes it's "unlimited internet" - however you get 1gig at 4G - then the rest of the month you're throttled to a whopping 56k (so useless you can't even stream a song with it).
As for the disappearing APN problem - if you run the CM7 ROM, and you're APN's are not in there - all you have to do is pull the battery out, restart the phone, and the APN's are back in. Also as pointed out the specialized apps for t-mobile like the wifi calling app won't work.
Anyway - all that being said - I've been on Simple with my G2X for 3 months and it works quite well for me. Only wish they offered more data in the plans - so I try to stay connected to a wifi hotspot as much as possible.
I thought there flyer says 2gigs of data hahaha on the 60 dollar
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Yes you do have to be unlocked on simple mobile. You cannot use a simple mobile sim in a locked phone. You also get 2gigs of data on the $60 plan and 4g if available in your area.

Text free really free??

So just wondering if text free is really free. To text anyone. On any number. On any network. With any phone? There isn't a catch. And I could just go to [email protected] and cancel my unlimited texting? Ya know since this claims to be " free "
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
I'm pretty sure all the texting and IM messenging apps use your standard messaging charges. It just works differently. Like over data.

Yes, it's free. It uses data and wifi to send then. It's unreliable at times though. I used to use it on my iPhone 2G.

that was a contradiction. if it uses data, then normal text charges wont apply. but to answer the Q, yes its free, but data charges will apply, unless you have unlimited data or youre on wifi. i use it on my xtra inspire thats without sim card

so if you got unlimited data then you wouldn't have to pay 20 extra dollars a month for texting because u have unlimited data... but anyway at&t doesn't have unlimited data plans for smart phones.. :// just for non smart phones.

I would recommend a 200 MB plan to start with if you do NOT use streaming media, and use wifi to update market apps. For plain emails and texts, I do not see usage crossing 100-150 MB a month.

Hahaha...don't you just love predictive text? Yeah, I actually have my sights set on a unlocked Samsung Nexus I9250 that I found on Amazon. I can always get a Bluetooth keyboard. I know, I know....no discount. It's just that I don't feel like adding the required $30 data plan as I really only browse xda and emails. I have wifi at home so it's not something I need.
It's either that or the Samsung Galaxy Relay...but then I need to add that damn required data plan. Ugh....damn you T-Mobile!!!
