So I've been out of the whole ROM scene for a while now, I have CM7 on my TB still and it sucks pretty hard, and I'm looking to install a new rom. I mostly tether, text, and sometimes talk on the phone. I'm not that big on apps except like sports center, twitter, and facebook...usuallly don't play games. Any suggestions on where to start?
There isn't much to complain about in regards to CM7, as we don't have a whole lot of new development. Slayher's CM7 build is still my favorite T-Bolt rom in terms of speed and stability. I run a 1.6ghz OC and it's pretty snappy. Thundershed is a very popular ROM right now and is based off of the CM7.2 codebase with an ICS theme, so I would certainly check it out if you are looking for something that feels different. You'll probably want to look into various roms on your own as it's honestly opinionated with a few exceptions.
Team Liquid is also working on an ICS rom that has working Phone and SMS, but data isn't working yet(they are coding the RIL from scratch). I would keep my eye on it as the rom will probably become ready for daily use in the near future. As soon as data works, I'll probably switch over from CM7 unless there are other issues that arise with the rom.
I used to suggest to users any rom by ThunderStick, but he was a complete dbag recently on his rom thread when questioned on one of the issues the rom had. I guess because he moved to a nexus he stopped caring about the TB. I would check out the rom list (thunderbolt development forum) and go through each one. BAMF has always been high on peoples list.

Come on, you asked a question that any amount of thought or common sense should have answered for you, thunderstick and others gave you appropriate responses. Back on topic though, skyraider is great. Thundershed, jellyblur, and sfkcm7 are awesome AOSP roms and worth a look too. There's also a bunch of solid desensed roms out there. It's best to flash some roms and get to know your own tastes that way. After all, only you know what your ideal rom is.

I've been running sfk cm7 for about a week and I love it. Great battery life and slick as hell with tiamats 1.1.5.

All of them.
Signature.
If you're looking for something different, Vicious and SPJester's MIUI rom works very nicely. It's easy to customize using the built in MIUI system. Everything but MMS works I believe, but the way the rom is set up is a bit strange (as there is no app drawer, sort of like IOS). Still, very solid and, having tried pretty much every tbolt rom out there, this is the one I always come back to.
Using JellyBlur v1.3 and having 0 problems so far. Been running it for awhile now without any problems and love it. Thinking about putting it on my husband's Thunderbolt as Skyraider Zues is giving him some problems.
Agreed Jellyblur 1.3 CM7.2 Rocks!

I'm with you, personally Jellyblur 1.3 has been the best running, slickest rom I've used. I've tried Bamf, and quite a few other roms out there. This for me is going to be my daily. I'm hoping we can get ICS (but not counting on it, and the only reason I want it is so the devs can grab the RIL and do something awesome with it).

I love ODJDUB HD express. It's fast really nice and I get great battery life.

When you get too many suggestions I'm not sure how helpful they are but I emphatically urge Thundershed. In fairness I haven't tried every rom mentioned here but TS simply works.

Liquid ICS Jmod! A few people's efforts got 1x working and ICS feels soooooo good
Jellyblur V1.3-CM7 y SPJester
I recently went through most of the recommended ROMs (after unrooting to get the OTA radio update, doing a clean wipe, then re-rooting) and I have landed on Jellyblur V1.3-CM7 y SPJester which seems to be the slickest and best-running I've seen so far. Battery life is good, audio, SMS/MMS, data, and phone work. It is thankfully De-Sensed and instead uses the Go Launcher.
Curious to see what everyone likes.
Definitely Beans 6, it's smooth, aosp themed, and aroma. If you absolutely and passionately hate the stock TW look like me then this is the best TW out there.

Is anyone else having this problem? As much as I love CM10.1 and etc., I keep finding myself going back to say CleanRom. Does anyone have perfect stability on a 10.1 rom? I lose data, then get that fixed. Then I lose GPS. Just a hassle!

I find that TW roms are more stable, and after going from beans b7 to cm10.1 I find cm boring and lacking in many software areas. However, it is still a great ROM just a matter of personal preference

I've been on aosp pretty much from day 1 and don't ever see myself going back. Sure some of the betas and alphas had issues, but I've been on aokp milestone 1 and have 0 issues!! Everything works, and I get over 4 hours of screen time per charge.
Not too mention the unbelievable amount of tweaks that an aosp ROM allows you!!
The only thing I miss is the TW camera, not that the aosp is bad.

If I can find a tw rom that allows me to hear blue tooth phone audio while using the headphone jack for auxiliary media playback, I'd be all over it. I'm just the opposite. I'll try out a TW ROM, here and there, but I always end up going back to Baked BlackBean. I have had no issues regarding data, or GPS, with Baked.
There is a milestone for cm10. The 4.2 ROMs are still in beta mode. I have been running cm10 m1 for weeks and everything works perfectly. Like I said 4+ hours of screen time plus all the customizations make it too hard to go back to anything TW based.

Not trying to be a jerk but when people say everything works perfectly and I go into said ROMs thread only to find bugs it annoys me. Can we please work on stating that "it works perfectly for my needs". Right in the first post it points out to possible issues with GPS, call volume, music players, tethering and bluetooth.

Not trying to be a jerk, but you said it yourself "possible issues" it doesn't mean that everyone will have issues. We all know that ROMs behave differently on different phones. What I stated was accurate. CM10 M1 works on my phone with no issues. GPS, call volume, music player tethering and Bluetooth all work with no issues.

Same with me. CM10.1 is great, but if I need to use my phone in an emergency, I want to know I have a phone to rely on. And tethering doesn't work (At least I think it doesn't work).

I may be lucky but I haven't experienced much of the problems people claim in CM10.1. I doubt I'll ever look back at TouchWiz-based roms.
Personally, I've never used CM on any of my devices, I've always used others. For instance, I ran stock unrooted Touchwiz on my S3 for a couple months, then I switched to Liquidsmooth, I had that as my daily driver for at least 6 weeks, but the FC's and data dropouts were too much to bear so I went looking for another ROM, I installed Mean Lean Jellybean Machine Build 4 and loved it, so once Build 5 came out I switched to that, and have been on it ever since! I think I'll be staying on this ROM for awhile.

TouchWiz is actually an awesome oem skin for Android. It gets unfairly attacked because people think AOSP/CM must be better.
My personal experience: after rooting never used cm10.1 went straight to finding a good rom. Used executioner 2.5 liked the feel, speed, and battery life. Felt very stable. Tried cleanrom but started experiencing some bugs, switched quickly. Currently im running superchargedwiz rom kyjelly and it seems very stable i closely compare it to executioner 2.5 although im not getting the same battery life as i was getting on executioner but supercharged is very smooth. If i can figure out ktweakers kernal that came with supercharged, i know its possible to tweak it just right to get the right battery settings. My suggestion if your looking for a good rom to play with try one of these 2.

The in call volume has been fixed for me so I'm going to run it as a daily driver from now on.
Bluetooth audio is still completely broken I hear but it's not something I depend on or use without going out of my way.
Unless some other huge bug manifests, all is going pretty well.
So far there are two main issues that make me consider going back to TW:
1. Sometimes when I interrupt a game from loading, the entire system is laggy as hell until I reboot
2. There is a small delay when answering the phone. I don't know who can hear who during that delay, but its annoying nonetheless.
I'm waiting for the stretched image bug to be fixed on multi-window ROMs before I go back to TW though. It's definitely daily driver worthy.

Been daily on mine since the unofficial cm10 back in August, fine here but maybe I just can't stand TW. Only little issue Ive come across that bothers me is sometimes it will think a short press on menu/home is a long press and have to reboot. Bluetooth audio is fine if you go into the build.prop and modify lpa.decode to false

Been using as daily driver since unofficial cm10, lost IMEI and had some pretty good scares but I have been loving it ever since. I would say the only issue for me right now is the screen flickering which can be somewhat fixed by disabling HW overlay, which does not seem to stick through a reboot.
thank you all for the replies. I was running CM10 for a while, but I just resorted back to TW. I can't wait until all the nicks and bugs get sifted out of 10.1. Pure Google is the way to go.

if you are going to "wait for all the nicks and bugs get sifted out", you might always have a wait. Custom ROMs are just that, custom, and sometimes, what works for one phone won't work for another.
Just pick one that you like the features, and learn work arounds or ignore the "nicks and bugs"
Thanks to all the DEVs! I love waving my modded S3 under everyone running stock and asking why their phones can't do what mine does!

I ran liquid's for two weeks or so, but my flashing addiction made me try something else. Went back to AOKP 4.1 but now I'm back on stock TW that I made a few modifications to. I replaced the MMS app and keyboard with AOSP as well as the UI sounds, and I'm fairly content for now. Usually any kind of lags annoys me, but I've found JB Touchwiz to be alright ( I was an avid HTC user prior. Touchwiz is way smoother than Sense.)

I love CM, but lately it seems they have too much going on. The barely got 4.1 working, and came out with the M2 release, and then moved on to 4.2, which is CM 10.1. I prefer to stay with a dev that will tweak their ROM and stick with it until they get it right. That's why I will not use CM anymore. Unless they have hundreds of devs working constantly to keep up with the number of devices they support, they're eventually going to become a ROM that's unreliable. I hope I wrong, but with the S3 they're clearly not completing one OS before moving to another, which makes them a no go IMO.
Battery life has been absolutely incredible for me on 10.1. 9 hours on battery all on 4G with 20 min screen on at 80%

Just flashed the DarthStalker ROM onto my S3 I've had for about 2 weeks now, it works beautifully, I've gotta say. Super fast, native WiFi hotspot/USB tethering, I would highly recommend at least checking it out.
So I've been running CleanROM 5.6 for awhile and it hasn't been updated in awhile. I really want to give AOSP a shot but last time I flashed CM10, I had constant data drops, it was actually pretty bad compared to CleanROM. Well, I've used both liquid and carbon enough to run through the motions and the winner wound up being carbon. This is purely based on 4G lte speeds in my area (Philly, PA), I'm not saying one is better because they are both equally unique in their own way, I just tend to have a better signal with carbon, battery life and performance was pretty much a wash.
Hopefully this is useful to those in the same boat

I think AOSP far outweighs touchwiz in every aspect. TW does have some pretty neat features like gestures and popup widows, however AOSP just feels right, not hacked together like TW. Every Android device should come shipped with it. I don't really see the need for TW, Sense, Blur etc, besides corporate branding.. None of them can hold a candle to pure Google Android IMO.

I've noticed ever since going from a TW ROM (CleanROM 5.0) to an AOSP based ROM (Slim ROM, Carbon ROM, LiquidSmooth and currently ParanoidKANDdroid) that the data connection all around seems weaker than the TW based ROMS. For me all the AOSP ROMS mainained the same 4G speed, and had data drops in all the same areas. Some local area where I live I get great service/4g, others I have no 4g at all and am lucky to have any 3g on top of that. Only downside of the aosp based roms
