Not sure how to root my s3 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I've tried rooting it with the instruction on this site, but it would not work. So, I googled how to root this phone and I came up with the odin method. Well, this isn't working either. The instructions say to unlock the bootloader first, but all the google results say not to until you root it first. I'm not sure what to do. If anyone can help me that would be awesome. Thanks

Root first with Odin... extract the tar file from the zip download... flash it in pda then flash recovery and unlock bootloader

thanks for your help. I will try it now

It still didn't work. I don't know what I'm doing wrong

Has it flashed anything to your phone? If not and you can boot into your unrooted phone with no issues, just follow section one of Droidstyle's guide:

Make sure you have the correct file for your device or download again as you could have a bad download.

I finally got it. You HAVE to use the usb cable that came with the phone. The program was not seeing the phone. I was using the cable that came with my gnex. Thanks for your help

Root Problem SuperOneClick

Hello,
I've got a Skyrocket i727 and am stuck on the psneuter part when trying to root. I'm sorry for posting here since I'm sure the answers lie somewhere, but I've been researching since yesterday and haven't found it. I'm on a satellite internet connection that is pretttty slow.
Anyways, so I have the drivers installed, and then run SuperOneClick as Admin on windows 7. I click root and it runs until psneuter then appears to be stuck. It freezes there. When I close the black command screen that has opened it suggests I turn off debugging mode. When I try to close debugging mode it just stays at Waiting for Device...
So, what am I missing?
Thanks so much in advance.
SuperOneClick didn't work on mine because it had updated to 2.3.6 from 2.3.5...Which one do you have?
You need to use this method if your on android 2.3.6

So, I've done some reading about CWM and am still not quite sure what it is. Does it replace my current setup? Do I lose my stuff?
Edit: for anyone else following this topic I found this info about cwm:
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...-and-how-to-use-it-on-android-complete-guide/
Is it possible to do this without having an external sd card?
Must have external SD. CWM is an aftermarket recovery that replaces your stock recovery. It allows you to flash roms, make nandroid backups restore nandroid backups ect.....

I had this issue over the weekend. Go out to samsungs site and find the kids drivers. In the superclick in the "exploit" switch to zergrush, click root. It should say do you want to install drivers, click yes and it shouldn't take more then 10 minutes.

It's very simple, man. Use odin to flash CWM. Place Superuser zip on SD card. Boot into cwm and flash SU until it takes. Done, rooted.

Hey I've used the DoomLord script to root my phone, i personally found it extremely easy and doesnt involve having to use odin. (I'm a noob and i find odin scary lol after what i've read on these fourms of what happened to them with odin)
heres the video link that i personally followed and got my skyrocket i727r rooted with
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_6Z8acnNrw
here's the xda link to where to download the script that was used in the video, i found this in the video description, but here it is anyways

You would be doing yourself a disservice to not learn Odin. It's an essential for sammy devices.

[Q] [SOLVED] Is my friend's device soft bricked?

Hello there everyone...
I was helping my friend with his sgs iii and I successfully rooted and unlocked its bootloader and flashed TWRP recovery and such. Anyways, I decided to install Synergy rom on it, but when the phone booted, wifi didn't work. I figured it might be a kernel issue so I downloaded Scrosler's kernel and flashed that. Anyways, now instead of booting up, the phone just says "software unauthorized by Verizon has been installed on this device, please power off and take your device to the nearest Verizon store to get fixed". I can get into download mode but adb does not recognize the device and I am not sure how to get into recovery otherwise. Is there a shortcut to get into it from the powered off state? Or is my friend's sgs iii soft bricked and do I need to follow the guide in this thread here?
I apologize if this has been asked before but I searched and could not find anything specific on fixing this...
Thanks in advance
If you actually unlocked the BL, you shouldn't be seeing that message.
I'm keeping track of these separate "Bricked" threads. If you would have read the 13 other ones, you would know what to do.
Odin. That's your answer.

Yeah, you're soft bricked. This was the easiest way i find for a fix.

Odin a stock kernel, then odin stock rom...section 6 of my guide for further information.
You didn't unlock the phone bootloader. Synergy has a failsafe built into the rom that prevents loading its kernel if you are not unlocked.
Follow the guide droidstyle posted and if you had searched no WiFi in the synergy thread you would have seen lots of advice to unlock bootloader before you soft brickedm

Yeah sounds like a classic hard brick. Do the sdcard method or send it in for jtag.
A lot of people seem to have issues using that method. I remember I tried it once and it didn't work. Luckily it didn't result in a brick for me. I remember invisiblek once saying that flashing bootchains is very dangerous and an easy way to brick should anything go wrong during the flash.
What I do now and recommend everyone else do is just flash one of these root-injected stock roms in ODIN, then boot up and use EZ-Unlock v1.2 to unlock bootloader then you are free to flash anything you want.

[Q] Official CM Installation Method Confusion

Greetings,
My name is Tim and I'm looking for some assistance with getting CM 10.1.3 up and running on my GS3 (d2vzw / SCH-i535). I'm not a complete noob, as I managed to successfully flash CM to my Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, and my Droid X2 after countless hours of reading through XDA forum posts for each of the devices, however...I'm still pretty new to a lot of this stuff as I usually don't mess with it once I get CM up and running, and struggle with command prompts still, so I apologize for any/all idiocy posted herein.
I am using the instructions found on the CM site under the d2vzw device (I'd link you but it doesn't appear as though I'm allowed to), and after reading that I don't need to root my device to install CM, I'd prefer to stick with this method (I'm also uncomfortable using Odin or any other such software, as I've heard bad things and already managed to soft brick my GS3 once with it.)
I've got all the appropriate files listed at the above page, but I'm confused with several aspects of the "official" install instructions, and would like some clarification, if possible. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
1) USB drivers: I installed the Samsung drivers, but when I ran heimdall print-pit in CMD, it failed giving me an error 12 (can't remember what, specifically, but apparently it has to do with USB drivers). A bit of Google-ing, and I was able to determine that Samsung drivers = bad. Okay, I can deal with that and have uninstalled them. However, does that mean I need to NOT let Windows 7 Update auto install drivers? Further, do I need to use the zadig app to install drivers before I can use Heimdall appropriately? I ask because after I uninstalled the Samsung drivers and rebooted, I tried to flash but it failed.
2) Wording of CMD commands confuses me. Heimdall flash --ABOOT aboot.mbn - okay, I get that I'm typing "heimdall flash" as the preface, but the actual aboot.mbn file is within a .tar file...so do I just flash to the location of the actual tar file? Or do I extract it with 7zip (as I initially tried) and try to flash to the location of the actual aboot.mbn file? Further, --ABOOT doesn't show up on the list of viable options within CMD, which confuses me (is it part of the command, or is it a place holder for some command I'm not understanding).
3) Same question for the other CMD commands.
I've looked around on XDA, the Heimdall site, and elsewhere for more detailed "official" install guides, but they all seem to either involve Odin or rooting, and as I mentioned I want nothing to do with either of them, if possible.
Thank you kindly for your time.
Sure you can do all that, but there are some easy one click root apps for the gs3. Then install cwm recovery. Then flash CM and GAPPs.
Just search the forum and you should be able to find the thread.
Good luck!!

The only "one-click app" I know of is Framaroot which does not work on the VZW varient of the GS3. So what app are u referring to?

I was not referring to an apk on the phone, meant pc app.
I have not personally used this, but looks like it will do the trick.

If you want just go try out the cyanogenmod installer from the play store. It should root, unlock, and install for you. Just follow the instructions in the app.

Well, I just tried using the "casual" root one-click thing.
I successfully rooted, but it took ~10 minutes on the flashing of aboot. It claimed to be done, but when I tried to flash CWM it rebooted into the "unauthorized software, contact verizon" screen.
Any ideas? This makes me sad. I don't know why this is so much more difficult than my other devices.
-e- I can still get into download mode, but when I try to go into recovery it just loops back to the main samsung screen with the custom icon and then hops into the verizon unauthorized stuff. Also, when I plug it in to charge it just vibrates once every ~5 seconds without doing much else.
Additionally, I still don't know which USB drivers I want for doing all of this. I'm relying on the ones Windows 7 auto-installs currently, if that helps with troubleshooting. Thank you in advance, again.

you just didn't unlock your bootloader that's all. Flash stock (or stock recovery) using Odin. Then root using the same method above. When rooted unlock your bootloader using EZunlock1.2. Its an app that runs on your phone. Then flash recovery. Done.
Edit: at this point it may be easier to just flash a prerooted stock ROM using Odin.
