[Q] am i bricked? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

GF got a referb gs3 from best buy. so i was going to go through the unlock root and twrp to get her back to her favorite custom rom.
the phone was on 4.1.2 TW. so i used this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439
downloaded all the necessary files. and ran md5 check on the ones that supplied them, all passed..
step 2 was to flash vralec bootchain in odin.. it said it passed. but now the phone wont boot, and i cant get it to respond to any 3 finger salute.

Yeah sounds like a classic hard brick. Do the sdcard method or send it in for jtag.
A lot of people seem to have issues using that method. I remember I tried it once and it didn't work. Luckily it didn't result in a brick for me. I remember invisiblek once saying that flashing bootchains is very dangerous and an easy way to brick should anything go wrong during the flash.
What I do now and recommend everyone else do is just flash one of these root-injected stock roms in ODIN, then boot up and use EZ-Unlock v1.2 to unlock bootloader then you are free to flash anything you want.

Go to my guide and follow section 6....also try reading a couple threads before posting. This the whole reason why verizon locked the darn bootloader in the first place. Research then flash, dont flash then research!!!
Edited for incorrect advice.

This is incorrect...you must flash the stock kernel before flashing a stock rom in odin. Op go to my guide and follow section 6.
I suggest doing a factory reset in recovery, immediately after you flash root66. My phone would not finish booting after ODIN'ing root66 coming from BeansRom 9. It was sticking at the Verizon 4g boot image for 20 minutes.

Depends on what rom he flashed. That's why I asked. If he flashed a stock rom with stock kernel flashing root 66 in odin would work.

Read the op...she is getting the verizon triangle of death...that means one thing, either she flashed a custom recovery via odin or flashed a custom rom that was packaged with a custom kernel on a locked bootloader. The advice you gave is incorrect for this situation. Im not here to argue, im here to help pass along correct information to keep bricks at a minimum. Sometimes i may come off a bit brash, but im just trying to get the point across. Seems silly to take a 600.00 device and turn it into a paper weight all because lack of research don it?

All I did was ask what rom they attempted to flash. I don't care either way. Your guides have gotten me out of a couple jams. I wish people would read them first.
I'm also getting sick of all the warranty fraud going on.
Now that I reread the OP you are correct. I will edit my reply so as not mislead anyone.

[Q] Unroot Verizon Galaxy S3

Hello all,
I recently rooted my Galaxy S3 only to have my Mic fail on me 2 weeks later... Very dissatisfied with my Samsung about that - even though I am loving the phone. Anyways, back to the issue. Verizon has agreed to send me a replacement and I have to send them mine back. The problem is that I know that if I send them a rooted phone they will not honor the warranty, and I am having a very hard time flashing the Verizon Stock rom.
More specifically, and to see if I am doing anything wrong.. I used ODIN to flash a custom rooted rom onto my phone which worked perfectly, and now I am once again trying to use ODIN in order to flash the stock rom which I downloaded from goo.im - the file that I am using is HOME_I535VRALF2_I535VZWALF2_618049_REV09_user_low_ship.tar.md5
Simple steps - reboot into downloading mode -> check auto-reboot and reset time on ODIN and choose the file above under PDA. All works fine, the phone reboots and I get a PASS, and yet my phone is stuck on the Verizon 4G loading intro. I think that's what they call a soft brick.
The first time this happened, I flashed a different rom and the phone loaded properly but it had the open lock symbol under Samsung which I think means that it was unlocked.. Either way, it was not the unrooted and official stock rom which is what I need on my phone in order to keep my warranty. The file that DOES work is COMBINATION_I535VRBLJ1_I535VZWBLJ1_381038_REV09_user_low_ship(NO_WIPE).tar.md5
I have followed the above steps over and over again and I always get the same result - stock doesn't work, the other one does.
Any ideas? What could the issue be?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709
Personally I would try the files found in section 5 of this thread.
According to Droidstyles guide before his recent edits, if it freezes on the boot logo after a successful Odin factory flash then you're supposed to pull the battery, boot into recovery, and do a factory reset. Try that.

Yes this works, also had this happen to me, and to boot to recovery just hold home+volume up+power button. It should work.

You should probably factory reset after flashing, for you don't want to be running a buggy phone.

Use a full wipe version and this would not happen...part of the reason why i removed nowipe versions such as f2. But yes as slimsnoop said, data wipe /factory reset will fix that.
So I bought the s3 Verizon it was rooted and switched to cricket pre paid before my friend sold it to me he tried to root back to Verizon but of course he failed, is there anyway to get the phone completelyback to stock even though he switched providers cuz the phone is stuck on the activating part I'm no noobe at rooting just don't know much bout this phone

Follow section 5 of Droidstyle's (the guy above you) guide. Click the link in his signature. I'm not sure about how this handles modified network configuration though, that's not something I remotely know anything about.
I thought there was a way to bypass the activation screen? On older phones, you could tap the four corners of the screen or something like that? Anyone ever heard that before?

Having trouble getting Heimdall to work on OSX

So I've been using an HTC MyTouch 4G for the past few years and had the rooting/flashing process down with that phone, but I recently switched to the Verizon variant of the Samasung Galasy S III and have run into an issue trying to root and flash an aftermarket rom to this device.
As per the CM Wiki for my device, I need to install and use Heimdall to downgrade the bootloader. I'm not new to using the terminal, so I figured this wouldn't be a difficult step, however I can't get Heimdall to work even after many attempts to download just the binary from the CM wiki, download the entire package including the frontend directly from the website Heimdall is hosted on, and even after compiling directly from source.
After trying to install it many different times/ways, I'm running into the same error every single time. After opening the terminal and trying to execute any command pertaining to Heimdall (Heimdall help, Heimdall detect, etc.) I get a response of "Illegal Instruction." I cannot get it to do ANYTHING other than to respond with "Illegal Instruction."
It's driving me mad because all I need Heimdall for at this point is to downgrade the bootloader.
I know I must be making some very minute error, but I can't figure it out.
Just a bit more information: I'm running OSX 10.6 so the current Heimdall Frontend is not compatable, so I have to use the Terminal (which I'd rather do anyways because I have more control that way.)
Any help or isight would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Just use the casual script instead of trying to downgrade

You shouldn't need to do anything with the bootloader, use this to load a custom recovery, then flash the cm10 image for the Verizon sgs3.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.
According to the CM Wiki and a couple of other sources I can't think of at the moment, if I'm coming from stock/no root, I would need to load an older bootloader before flashing recovery and ultimately flashing CM10.
The Samsung root process is a bit different from some of the other phones I have worked with. Would you mind explaining to me why I wouldn't need to load an older bootloader?
Edit: After taking a look into the thread you provided for me I may have answered my own question. Loading the older bootloader is probably essential to getting the exploit to work with Heimdall, right? But not with the Casual exploit?

I've never seen those instructions before, but i would try posting this In the cm10 question and answer thread.
That could also be old instructions, find the cm10 development thread and see what the latest instructions are for installation.
I've never used heimdall and couldn't give you instructions how to use it, using odin to flash those would be significantly easier if you can get access to a window computer.
Either way, that process won't achieve root anyway. You're better off running casual first to get a custom recovery and root access, then run that process later if needed.

In theory, and please correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like I should be able to use Casual up until I need to flash CM10. Which is as simple as throwing the .zip file onto my SD card and installing from recovery. That way I probably won't even have to touch Heimdall.
The only thing that concerns me is that following the CM wiki instructions has you flash an older kernel as well. Again, this appears to me like it could only be required to load the customer recovery using Heimdall, but I'm not entirely sure.
I'll have to look around for the CM10 dev thread around here because the one on the CM forum is a ghost town.
Thanks again for all of your help!

That's exactly what I'm saying. However, the whole thing is confusing to me also. It seems weird that you'd need an older bootloader in order to run the rom.
Just make a backup before you flash in recovery, then if it won't run at least you have a way to get a working phone.
The kernel should have nothing to do with anything, as soon as you flash cm10 it'll get overwritten with the cm10 stock kernel.
Also make sure that the bootloader is unlocked before you flash, or you'd have to odin back to stock.

I'm assuming it has something to do with using Heimdall, and if that's the case, I don't know why anyone would ever want to use that method when it is clearly more difficult. Maybe someone else can weigh in on the topic.
Thanks again for the solid advice. I'll take the Casual route and see where it takes me.

You mean once you unlock the phone with an old aboot file right? The newer phones would have a newer bootloader until you change it.
The instructions are really confusing because they're instructing to downgrade the bootloader to inject an aboot file and custom recovery. I still think that entire step is unnecessary.

System software not authorized by Verizon Wireless has been found on your phone

Gang,
I rooted the phone, but I thought I unlocked the bootloader, but apparently it didn't work, when I boot the phone I get the error with a Yellow Triangle! -“System software not authorized by Verizon Wireless has been found on your phone. Please turn off phone and go to the nearest Verison Wireless Store for Help.
I've tried going into ODIN, with Down/Home and Power, but the phone only vibrates, when I press up, with blank screen.. If I wait for the "“System software not authorized by Verizon Wireless has been found on your phone. Please turn off phone and go to the nearest Verison Wireless Store for Help." It just sits there no change..
Is there any other way to unbrick the phone, did something change? I've done this to many other S3's but this one is giving me the flucks..
in the top left hand corner with verizon message is error in red: Secure Fail: Kernal

Are you using a usb 3.0 port on your computer? Odin only works like 10% when I use a 3.0 port. Otherwise I would just try redownloading odin and right click on it and run as administrator.
Idk which method you used to root and unlock your bootloader but this always works for http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2332825 I only use odin for flashing back to stock, I've had occasional fails when rooting or unlocking the bootloader.
But you only soft bricked your phone so it's fixable. Verizon just puts that's message there to scare people so you have to go in, be told your warranty is void and have to buy a new phone.
I will try a 2.0 usb, but are you daying the device should be found via odin even if the up/done home key combonation doesn't work?

Pretty easy. First put the 4.1.2 Odin tar on your internal or external sd card as well as the stock kernel which is also a tar file. You can get these from Samsung's site or from the stickies here on xda. Remember the ones on Samsung site will wipe internal. But you can grab no wipe version here on xda
Now just go grab the app. When you open it it will ask you to download an add on. Say yes. Now it will tell you that you must have an unlocked bootloader. Say Ok since we know you have one. Put rom in system and kernel in kernel slot. If you wanna keep root and you are not flashing a rooted stock rom turn on ever root. Flash away!
