Hello all,
I've got an HTC shadow smartphone. The problem I'm having is that the display is too bright when I'm reading in a dark room. This reading mostly involves IE Mobile or Opera Mini.
1- Backlight solution:
Unfortunately, the shadow does not have an adjustable backlight. It appears to have a "high" and a "low" level. I can get a program to make it stay on "low", but this setting is just too dim to read by.
2- Software solution:
Im usually using MobileIE or Opera Mini in these reading situation. Is there a hack either at the application level, or at a lower level to modify the brightness by somehow scaling the RGB values?
3- Screen protector solution:
I'm thinking one of those anti-glare screen protector things might reduce the brighness. Has anyone tried one of these?
Thanks for any help,
Steve
I would go for the software solution. The screen protector only protects the screen. It won't affect the brightness in any way. I am pretty sure you can find a freeware application to adjust your screen's brightness.

Thats the thing though... I cannot find any way to reduce the brightness via software. I've searched for hours.
If anyone could help it would be greatly apprecieated!
Thanks,
Steve
try g-light by ageye
or lumos by some one else on the forums ! these apps do exactly what you want!
i know they can be found in the diamond forums for sure
For browsing there is UCWEB that has a skin named "Night", that's all black, and is more confortable in a dark room.

Thanks idrisito, but I dont think either of those would work on my HTC shadow (omap850 based smartphone).

Hey Everyone,
As has been mentioned many times in other threads:
1) The LCD is often the biggest battery drainer
2) The 'minimum' setting of the brightness setting is still needlessly bright.
It certainly can be pushed further down for dim/night/dark settings.
3) Certain apps "dim" the screen but are just changing the color, not the backlight. So while useful they still aren't helping your battery.
Following some tips from a different android phone, I found this file:
/sys/devices/platform_/nov_cabc.0/leds/lcd-backlight/brightness
Which appears to contain the current 'brightness #' of the LCD backlight.
Using the normal Brightness slider, the value changes from 30 - 255, with 255 being the brightest. So this clearly could be reduced further.
Setting 'Screen Filter' to 50% brightness has no effect on the value.
Here's something interesting:
Assume the screen is already set at lowest brightness.
When I use 'Widgetsoid' to set brightness to '1', the screen dims slightly, then brightens back up. The 'brightness' file gets set to 20.
'widgetsoid 20' feels the same as 'min brightness 30'. - I wonder if Android is enforcing minimum backlight?
Anyway, thought that would be interesting to note. I'm going to download some other screen dimmer apps and see what they do.
- Frank
I found this online which is very interesting reading:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/35972886/An-Analysis-of-Power-Consumption-in-a-Smart-Phone
At '30' they said the display consumed 7.8 mW, while at 255 it consumed 414 (!!!)
Various apps coud push the value to 20 - tasker, adjbrightness.
Tasker tries to set it lower but as with widgetsoid, you can see the screen get forced back up to 20.
adjbrightness can "set" it lower than 20, but the entire screen blacks out, even at 19. Remember where the other buttons are so you can restore brightness!
- Frank
Whoa, thanks for the information. That pretty insane but its an apparently in the Market: Screen Filter, saves a helluva lot of battery.
Edit: Nevermind, Frank shut me up LOL.

I read a thread that said that the stock rom just doesn't allow setting it that low.
Ah well

Can you set it lower in other roms - like cm7?

I've been playing with CM7 which has some nice features for customizing the auto-brightness settings as well as the "dim" value which seems to be the lowest value the screen will go to and what it gets set to when the screen dims before shutting off after a timeout.
For the Dim setting in CM7, the default is 20. The next highest setting in the picker is 18. I believe it goes down to 0 or 1. When set to 18 or lower the screen blanks out completely when dimmed. Depending on how you test this, you may have a problem getting the screen back, so be careful you know where your widget button is on the screen to bring it back... 20 seems to be the lowest value. However, while dim, in a very dark room it could certainly be even dimmer so I don't know why lower values don't work.
I've also found the light detector doesn't seem to detect a continuum of light levels. It seems to be quantized at particular values, so there's a pretty hard limit on how fine you can set the auto brightness levels since the lowest light reading it seems to take is not very sensitive. It can't seem to distinguish between a fully darkened room and a dimly lit room, so setting the lowest value automatically makes the screen too dark to be comfortable in many environments, but then too bright for a really dark room. I don't know if this is an issue with the ROM software or a hardware limitation of the sensor. I've set my lowest auto setting to 40 which seems to work well, then I manually switch it to the dim value (20) if I'm in the dark.
I really love my Inspire, especially w/ Honeyogen installed. But the problem of viewing the screen in direct sunlight is a major problem for me, one that I cant seem to find a soultion for.
Ive tried different screen covers & different ROMs & even different Kernals, yet the Inspires Slcd screen is still terrible in direct sunlight, as all I see is my reflection.
My question is this... is there anyway to hack the screen to increase the brightness beyond the "normal" or "stock" brightness levels?
I would think that if developers can hack volume levels for the external speaker & also freq values for overclocking the cpu, that the same could be possible for the screen brightness!?
Thanks, i appreciate your thoughts!

Thank you for this question. I am interested in a solution to this as well.
is your screen on auto brightness? take it off and adjust yourself. it will adjust to light depending on how much and how little you get.
If your rom is cm7 base go to menu, settings, cyanogenmod settings, display, automatic backlight, scroll down to light levels, check use custom, other levels, (this is what I do) change 1st 3 screen profiles from 41 to 61, 61 to 81, 81 to 101, then hit save and apply. The higher the # the brighter the screen. Those settings are pretty good on battery and definitely helps on making the screen more viewable outside and in bright rooms. Hour this helps

Thanks for trying, but of course I've set my brightness levels myself. Auto-brightness doesn't do it for me.
I'm just surprised that there aren't hacks for screen brightness. Just as speakers levels & the CPU are governed to a certain threshold in stock configs, I would think the screen is governed and has much higher brightness levels it can go beyond.

Yes, my ROM is CM7 based. But I assume these custom levels are for the Auto-Brightness mode?
Also, where exactly do I make these changes? Because the "screen" values are already at 41, 61, 81, 112 and so forth. So I assume these values have been changed by my ROM developer or are they CM7 defaults? Or do I have it all wrong? LOL. Thanks again.

Yes, this is for auto brightness. You do have the correct defaults. I bumped the first 3 profiles up by 20 and screen is brighter at lower levels.

also would like to know if there is any way to do this! bump!!!!

Ok, but my question is does this actually make the screen any brighter than the highest stock brightness level?
Or does this just change the values, so that the lower values are brighter, but no brighter than the stock highest level?
no brighter than brightest stock value

So why can you developers increase & hack the speaker and the CPU values and MAX out their potential, yet the screen's potential is wasted and we are stuck with dark screens that can't be seen very well outdoors?
It doesn't make sense to me. The screen backlight must have more potential, they don't push ANY hardware to it's max in stock configurations.
Come on developers, we need you again!
FALSE - juice defender's ultimate (maybe even pro) app can adjust it higher than the 100% brightness value. Only problem with this is that you have to let it control your brightness settings, but there's a bug that doesn't allow you to install apk's manually - so you have to disable the brightness while you install apks (or you could just install through adb lol). so yes, there is a way.

Um no Juicedefender does'nt raise the screen brightness ANY higher than you normally can w/ the stock brightness slider. All that does is mess with the Auto-Brightness settings.
Alot of people seem to get the Auto-Brightness settings confused with what I am asking. I want to be able to raise the brightness beyond the MANUAL brightness slider. If you raise the auto-brightness setting, your STILL limited to the max value that's on the manual brightness slider. I want THAT manual setting to be pushed beyond the normal "stock" value, which I guess is impossible......can't understand why when almost every other hardware is hacked to allow better performance.

Okay sorry just looked at juice defender again. It allows you to only change the shape of the brightness curve. As for forcing a brighter screen level I'm blank on that. Have you manually set it to 100% and its still. Not bright enough?

You cant overclock the values of your android hardware "screen" for brightness and dimness since it can only work properly on a given threshold hence any more than that is negligible.
I've been using my G Flex 2 H959 for more than 1 year and I'm loving it in every way except one thing, the screen brightness. The screen is damn too bright to use it in the dark. It is so bright that the only way i can use it in the dark is as a flashlight. Seriously!
So is there any mods that can adjust the minimum screen brightness setting? I'm currently on V15E-SEA ROM and haven't root it yet.

Hi everybody,
I couldn't create a new Thread because I am new, that's why I Post this here:
i tried a few screen filter apps to analyze if they would actually improve my batter life with the following setting:
I Played a 40 minutes video file, sound off for no side effects
Battery not at 100% to avoid calibration shift stuff
No extreme load before to avoid other misleading battery measurements..
With A:
Pixel filter app: pixelize almost to the maximum (actually custom setting, i would say about 80-90 % dead pixels)
System brightness: to max (i assumed maximum differences with this)
B:
Darker app: darken to 20%
System brightness to max
C:
No filter app
System brightness to max
In each Case I dropped 9 to 10 % with every run... This is unexpected..
1st question: anybody else with the same findings?
2nd: any ideas for reasons for this? (i know that 40 minutes isnt THAT long, but 10% is i think)
I use Lux to go below the minimum brightness. It is also a better solution for auto-brightness if you can configure it well.
Yea, I tried Lux a while ago..
U are right, it is well configurable for auto brightness BUT
On the one hand it's interface is oldscool ugly and userunfriendly (just like a real professional Application) - so there is no well usable notification if u want to override lux for short e.g.
On the other hand lux doesnt dark the navigation bar buttons like darker does <- this is a critical point in dark conditions
And on the third hand, if you have or like, lux won't effect battery life like any other filter App, or is it just me??
Hello! Me and my wife both got this phone at the same time from the same place, but hers goes to a much lower minimum brightness than mine.
Does anyone know of a way to lower the minimum brightness?
EDIT: Okay, i did some poking around in ADB, found the "current brightness" file in /sys/class/leds/lcd_backlight0/brightness. Both phones report a brightness value of 65 when manually set to minimum brightness. The 65 sounds to me like they could go lower, is there any way to change the values used for the brightness slider? Or the automatic brightness curve.
Why not just use the screen filter app? I'm using it on every device to make screen real dark.
Skickat från min Nokia 3110i
Screen filter apps can't lower the backlight, which means they all ruin the screen contrast. They do work all right on OLED screens though since the blacks are already black.
It can be fixed with a buildprop edit, MAYBE
Here are some steps you can take to help fix your issue with the brightness.
Please restart your phone. If restarting your phone does not work, perform the following steps:
- Check if the light sensor works properly. If the light sensor is blocked, the screen brightness may become abnormal.
- By default, your phone automatically adjusts screen brightness according to the ambient brightness to bring you an optimal visual experience.
- If you need to adjust the screen brightness manually, turn off the function and manual adjust the brightness.
- If you think that the screen color temperature is too cool or warm, adjust the color temperature.
- If the screen has experienced an external shock, the internal LCD may have been damaged, resulting in abnormal screen brightness or color. Please back up important data and take the receipt issued with your phone to an authorized Huawei service center for repair.
Another option you can do is to purchase one of our third-party tempered screen protectors on Amazon. (NS)
Sure seems like this phone has so many bugs.
