External usb drive and charging - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to connect an external USB HD and still charge the tab? (Tab 2 10.1)
I am fitting it in the car so will be constantly connected to car charger but also need the HD connected and ideally 1 or 2 spare USB ports (hub)
Can this be done?
Thanks,
Mark

Yes should work with a double side usb cable
Be careful the Tab is drawing high current level by itself , you will need at least a 2amps car charger

Ok, cheers for the reply...
Hard drive will have its own power supply and I'll use official Samsung car charger for tab...

Consider they're basically identical phones yes, it will work. Just about any micro USB charger will work.
Thanks....
I bought this because of the extra USB port.

Yes an NO lol. All depends what ROM you are using , what kernal is flashed and your device. You could "possibly" run a command via terminal but you wont have the function of both. It will be one or the other.

I would like to mount a USB memory device simultaneously while charging. Are you saying this isn't possible

I think usb otg and charging in the same time is not possible as the two use the 30 pin connector, so you need accessory that is otg and has a socket to connect for charging in the same time, i have not seen this accessory yet
All otg cables i see has a socket only for usb stick and some has additional sockets for sd cards as the 5 in 1 accessory (i have one)

Atrix2 HD dock DIY

Building Atrix2 HD dock using Powered USB hub,HDMI cable and USB OTG cable
i made one dock using usb hub, OTG and HDMI cables.
procedure:-
1) if we are using Bus powered USB hub then use one male cable to power the hub as in the image(i used atrix2 charger to power the USB hub and connected one mouse and flash drive it works perfect)
2) Use OGT cable to connect the hub to atrix2
3)use HDMI cable to connect to TV or monitor.
detail
i spent only 730 Rs\- for whole pack and its working perfect

Can you give the link from where you bought all these? I can't get it for cheap in the market
Nice work.
I was thinking of something similar with a rechargeable battery and cordless mouse to get rid of the additional power wire. Does a USB keyboard work on this dock?

Werid problem with my a700

Right then I'll expalne this first I use a nexus 7 charger to charge my a700 but it's not chargeing now it still works the charger on other devices so I thought the usb port had messed up so I tryed to plug my otg cable in and all the devices I've pluged in work (Xbox 360 pad memory sticks usb dongle) all work I am puzzed on why the charger doesn't work also my pc doesn't pick the tablet up any ideas would be helpful
Update its charging but still no connection to pc

You need a special charger for the A700. There are two extra contacts to change the tab. This is due to the large battery.

I understand that I'd love to know the pin layout of the normal charger I'd try to make my own but at least it charges from my nexus 7 charger but what am trying to figger out is why it won't connect to my pc via mirco usb

I've decided to make my own charger the pin layout is pin 1 is 12volt+ and the pin 12 is 12 volt - I read that from another forum if this mod works I shall upload photos

I need this cable

Hi guys, I had this cable for my S3. It's for charging and play music. Aux to USB. Unfortunately doesn't work with my S4. Does someone knows a cable like this for S4?

Yes, it attaches through the micro USB. My understanding is, that there is a resistor on the 'Sense' wire of the usb that triggers dock mode, and enables audio to travel over the Data + and - wires.
At least, that's how the dock worked for the older Galaxy S models.
The iBOLT Dock'n Play cable...
All, the cable you're discussing is available from us at iBOLT on Amazon here, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009PN6APM When the microUSB is inserted it triggers "DockMode" in any Samsung Galaxy S3, S4 or Note I & II. You can go into "Accessory-Settings" and select "audio out" and "dock mode screen". This means the sound from all Apps (not phone calls though) will go to the 3.5 mm aux-out jack so there's only ONE cable needed for charging AND playing music to a car-stereo or home surround sound system (if they feature a 3.5 mm female connector). Also, with the DockMode apps like iBOLT Dock'n Drive, CarHome Ultra, Ulysee Speedometer, can be set as default "home screen" apps. You can also set TuneIn and Slacker Radio as "home screen". Summary: No need for a separate aux-out cable when using the Dock'n Play cable... Great accessory for home or in the car. I'll stay tuned to the conversation if anyone has follow up questions.
So what's so special at iBOLT cable? why I can't use the same cable like attached in the picture in the first thread..
how come no one make cheaper cable thats do the same thing?
thanks.
The cable on the first picture doesn't work with S4. It was perfect for S3 but not for S4

as I far as I know, it's because firmware update, there's no any mod/patch that can override it, and let us use this cable?
iBOLT cable working on S4, but it cost 20$, which is alot for simple cable.. so if their cable works, I don't see any reason why the other cables wont work.
