[Q] screencast not working properly (black screen/no movement) (rooted phone) - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i tried to find the answer to this one but i couldn't so here is my question
today i rooted by brand new galaxy note 10.1 for the purpose of using the app called screencast to record games i bought screencast and tried to record with it in gta 3 it wen't by with absolutely no lag in the game
when i go to check the video all i see is going from the screencast app to the menu which is frozen then it goes black
it did not recording anything at all just one picture of the menu rest black with sound
i have tried different recording resolutions normal and high
different fps 10 30 and 40
still completely black
i tried to record just going through the menu (swiping back and forth in those transparent windows) which recording
and it litterally is just frozen i tried the benchmark and it shows 34 fps at highest possible recording settings
this video shows amazing recording with this program but i can't use it at all it just records the menu screen frozen then changes to a black screen with the bar in the bottom as i start a application
/watch?v=APcx6DVsOAw
i am running jellybean 4.1.1
edit it now records the menus properly after i used the screencast gadget but it still goes to black when starting gta 3

JB could be the problem, it might not be JB compatible yet. Best bet would be to contact the developer and leave feedback...

can i easily revert back to the former operating system? and then re root? i backed it all up through the clockwork recovery menu
are my apps synced to my account or will i lose them if i wipe the tablet?

Go into screencast in the android market and look in the app description you will see a link for app support. They should be able to tell you if the problem is jelly bean or a bug in the app. Best to look there before you go reverting back to ics.

sadly time is not something i have i bought this for one purpose to record vice city gameplay on android try to be first
i am a youtube partner so i wanted to try something new
the game releases in 6 days
and i think i failed
i asked someone on youtube he said this
on my sgn 10.1 This program works with the same errors can it is because of the screen size. because this program works fine on jb samsung galaxy note 2
so yeah perhaps this program won't work at all with a tablet which means well :crying:
i could have bought the note 2 for the same money i would get a nice light phone to record i even need a phone always wanted a smartphone but no instead i had to pick a tablet something i have absolutely no use for other then what i had planned i don't know what to do right now the tablet is good but the screen is too low res for me it is too heavy and too bulky i have absolutely no use for it the blacklevel on the screen is simply bad makes for watching movies not a great experience so yeah if i can't record a video as planned then i will have no use for it i like how strong it is i tried recording with screencast and there was no lag in the game at all absolutely lag free wheather it was actually recording or not is unknown too me but if it was then it's a very strong tablet
and i don't think i can properly sell it either it has been rooted and tons of information is on it and i don't think you can delete that information to 100% before selling it atleast i have not peeled off the back protection layer this is really awful
edit tried it with a new recorder called asc https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.benzul.asc
same thing black in both video playback and games

well i have tried everything to get this working NOTHING works i tried every method imaginable even tried emulating to play it on my pc which i then found out would cause alot of lag
i tried EVERYTHING to get this working
screencast ends up with a black screen in video playback and games (the recorded video shows black)
z recorder records videos in 0 kb does not work at all
now comes the funny thing
i tried an app called display recorder on my dads iphone worked perfectly first try i could record sadly the iphone 4s cannot handle gta 3 and recording i get noticable lag
so if i got an ipad i would be able to make the video i planned to now it's too late to get one only 3 days left sadly i failed
so much money spent on this
i also got a response on youtube from someone with a note 10.1 about recording this is what he said
No does not work. Gameplay does not record.
so i guess it is impossible this is making me very frustrated i spent days trying to get this to work and i failed

I am having the same issue with my Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-N8000.
There is a workaround which might help you with what you are planning to do.
You can try using Bluestacks in full screen mode on your computer and you can run GTA 3 android game there. To record the gameplay, you can use Camtasia which works perfectly fine on laptop and desktop computers and is far efficient than Screencast. This is just a workaround to make the things happen. . Hope this would help you.
I don't know if you post a reply here I would get a notification in my mailbot, but I would really love to assist you in sorting out this issue with you if you are interested. You can email me anytime you want. (Hope I am not violating any rules by asking someone to contact me directly. I am new here.)
Here's my issue with Screencast.
I tried using Screencast to record a gameplay which it didn't.
At first I thought there might be some issue with the game itself.
Then I bought Remote Desktop Client app from Google Play, started Screencast to capture the screen, 'remote-desktoped' my Windows 7 computer from my N8000 through Wi-Fi on the Local Area Network.
Screencast only captured the movements till the Windows 7 console appeared. After that the recording continued but movements were not captured. Screencast started capturing the movements once again after I closed the console of Windows 7.
When I played the recorded file, the screen freezed right after the console of Windows 7 appeared and the movie continued to play. The activity was seen in the movie after the Windows 7 console was closed.
Looking for some solutions but no luck yet.
And the funny thing is that when I rotated the Tab, and the screen layout changed from landscape to portrait or portrait to landscape, that rotation was recorded without any issues and was seen in the move. A big LOL.

Infuse Video Playback Performance

After messing around with my Infuse on stock, custom Froyo and Gingerbread ROM's, I've noticed a pretty major difference between it and I9000-based phones like the Captivate: video performance.
On my Captivate, hardware-accelerated video playback up to 720p was rock solid. If it played at all, it always played smoothly, and this was regardless of running programs or RAM usage. With the Infuse, Froyo ROM's support hardware-accelerated video playback up to 1080p, but there seem to be some disadvantages.
The most major thing I noticed is that RAM usage affects video playback. If I use my phone for a while and allow the RAM to populate with background apps, I immediately run into issues trying to play video: high-bitrate 1080p video will no longer play. Instead, I just get a black screen and no sound. Additionally, several 720p videos I tested will lag heavily. Occasionally (using an app that supports both hardware and software playback like MX Video Player), playing a video will error out and force the app to switch to software decoding.
Clearing the RAM using the built-in task manager and restarting the video player immediately resolves these issues for the most part. There still are some effects that always persist though: certain 720p videos (which play perfectly on my Captivate) will still show some hints of lag using either hardware or software decoding. Additionally, I can't seek or resume playback of high-bitrate 1080p MKV's: the screen goes black and the sound stops playing. I can only play these files from the beginning for them to have video and sound.
Except for the issues specifically relating to 1080p (which don't apply to Gingerbread ROM's), all of these issues are observed and reproducible on any ROM, including stock Froyo, custom Froyo (Infused 1.6), Hellraiser + any I9000 JVQ ROM and Infused v2.2.3. This is severely disappointing, because I upgraded to the Infuse expecting a media experience equal to or improved over the Captivate with the SAMOLED+ screen. I also didn't want a Galaxy S2 because the Yamaha audio chip it uses is a dealbreaker for me.
While that was mostly a list of observations and a not-so-subtle rant, would anyone be able to offer an explanation for this? Or perhaps my case is somehow isolated? Can anyone else confirm this?
Edit: Here's a YouTube video showing the RAM usage playback issues: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPiCPSWUTCY
Never had any trouble with video playback. I have a couple of movies on mine. Running Infused 2.2.3

I'm not sure what to think of that, considering Infused 2.2.3 doesn't even support 1080p playback. But even leaving that out, would you be willing to test sample videos? I mean I can't really explain this better without posting a video of a side-by-side comparison of my Captivate and Infuse playing the same set of videos to show that the Infuse lags on certain videos while the Captivate is smooth.
*bump*
I did some additional testing. Running Infused 1.6 Froyo, I loaded up every app on my phone and then minimized them with the home key. The phone was still running smoothly and there was no signs of lag, but the RAM was as full as I could make it. I then opened the stock video app and attempted to play my library of videos.
The result? Only 2 videos played. One was a 720p H.264 MKV encoded from a Bluray, and the other was the 1080p trailer that came preloaded on the phone. Both videos lagged heavily. The rest of the videos (lower quality 720p or higher bitrate 1080p H.264 MKV's) did not play at all: just a black screen and a seek bar that didn't move. I then performed a level 2 clear using the task manager. Result: all the videos played fine without lag.
Conclusion: video playback on the Infuse is definitely tied to RAM usage, which is NOT the case on the I9000/Captivate.

Thanks. I'm working on it, I'll send you a PM in a bit.
Edit: PM sent.
sorry to inform you but I had no issues with that video. I wonder if you may have something stuck in data somewhere (some apps keep data on the sd card) or If you may have bad blocks on your sdcard. I haven't rebooted my phone today and loaded up ram by playing flash videos in the phone browser getting ram all the way up to 340 mb used. 140 was the browser alone and I started that video just fine. ill keep testing but if I were you id back up the sd cards and wipe the phone through settings (does an internal sd format as well unlike the recovery wipe) after a flash with the unbrick and start over. if it persists id get a new phone and for the sake of being thorough I will test it more but so ar I couldn't reproduce the issues.

I'm going to return to stock using Unbrick and reformat the internal SD and try again. I don't see why there would be bad blocks though. I'm guessing the video plays smoothly without any sort of lag or hitches for you?

smooth as butter. sometimes weird hard to explain stuff happens. I can't explain it.
I can see how a kernel issue in gb could cause it with rogers lame firmware but I don't see the issue with infused 1.6 so it doesn't seem to be an infuse specific issue at all.
Ok, I just finished completely resetting, reflashing and reformatting my phone. On first boot, I threw that exact file I sent you back onto the memory and tried to play it. Still got a black screen with no sound or video. Opened the task manager, performed a level 2 clear and tried again. Video plays but still lags and hitches every few seconds. I mean, if I'm really the only one with this issue...???

sorry looks that way. but you should have only moved the videos back for testing. i know it shouldnt matter but computers are weird. maybe it's a deficientcy in your cpu? could only apply to the gpu inside it. you just never know. if you can reproduce the error with the trailers that come on the phone and compare it to a store model maybe they'll swap it out for you. if not call customer service and raise hell or send it to samsung.

What do you mean only move the videos back for testing? I didn't put anything on the phone except for that video file. The CPU doesn't seem to be the issue, because I tested against my Captivate using CPU Spy: both phones run at 400MHz during video playback, which is good enough for lag-free video on the Captivate (and should be the same case for the Infuse).
I can't get much to happen with the trailers that came with the phone, because only one is HD and it's a small file with black bars and a lower bitrate than most encodes. If I leave the phone running for over a day with the memory full, I can get the 1080p trailer to lag, but that's not very helpful for getting an exchange (especially since I got my phone at Costco and there are no active models in the store).
But that's not the issue anyway. The problem is that I've been enjoying 720p video on my Captivate for over a year. Now I've upgraded to the Infuse, which is supposed to have even better video performance and its having issues with all of my 720p and 1080p videos.
I'm almost positive this isn't a hardware issue though. Are you sure the entire opening sequence of that video is smooth on your phone? It doesn't seem like you've ever seen the video before watching it on your phone. If you haven't, please watch the video side-by-side on your computer and phone and look for any differences.

i meant not to restore all the files from the sd card backup when you test. just the files you want to test.
it is extremely smooth i cant seem to do anything to make it not smooth. i even bogged my phone down sequencially opening every app on the thing and returning home with the home button till it started lagging badly but when i open the video player it is butter smooth. really i cant explain your issues, im just speculating possibilities.
but ill try it on my computer as well.

I only restored one file. The video. Nothing else.
Edit: Can you tell me the build number of your Infuse (the 4-digit number under the battery, between S/N and SKU)? Mine is 1104.
oh wait there it is. the video player just stopped working.
not sure what changed but i put it on the dock and tried starting it again and no dice. i dont think this is ram related.
the issue for me is intermittent at best though. after a reboot it didnt play at first but 2 minutes later it was fine.
mine is also an 1104. april 2011 that's weird i wonder if you got a refurb. i think i picked mine up launch week.

Hmm, I wonder if that's unrelated to the issue considering how easily it happens on my phone and how much trouble you had to go through. If the video still doesn't lag on your phone at all (when you compare it to a computer), then I'll assume you're not getting the same issue. Also, are you using the kernel that came with Infused 1.6, or did you flash another one?
infused as is right now. nothing oddball here. atleast not right now. i have used some init.d scripts on it for loopy smoothness and memory managment mods but this time it is only the rom as gtg released it with the included kernel.
ok found the issue sorta. i cant tell what causes it but if you launch the video from my files or other file manager it works fine. if you open it from video player it doesn't. the video didnt show in my video player at first so i opened it from my files. after that it was in the video list in the video player and didnt work. there is something odd going on here because video player doesnt show in recent apps if you open it from the file manager. also after opening the video player it doesnt work from my files till you kill the video player. it is just weirdness. there is some messed up programming going on here. but try killing the player and opening the file with file manager. and yes i made sure it is using the samsung video player when it asked!
sorry i asked you to wipe your phone for that but if you dont do that and use the unbrick you can see all sorts of issues and no one is sure why.
Maybe that's why mine play fine. I've never loaded a vid into the player. Just opened them bygoing to the gallery.

That's an unexpected development. I've always been opening my videos from the video player, never from a file manager. How about other video players? Did you try MX Video Player? I need to use that player for my videos to see the subtitles (the video I sent you has subtitles that will display in MX Video Player and mVideoPlayer, but the former is better at displaying them).
Edit: Actually, I just tried playing the video from both the stock file manager and the Gallery app, and I still have the exact same issues as the video app :/

[Q] Should I keep the infuse?

I only ask because this will be my third infuse, first one the screen broke, second one was stolen.
I like the infuse however I am not a fan of these problems:
Can't play youtube videos in the background
Youtube videos, or other flash videos don't just start playing by themselves
So I was thinking about possibly another phone, though I love this phone (screen, camera and all)
I was also thinking about trying to flash ubuntu (it would be a PC! at least this what I think anyways)
I was just wondering if there were better phones out there under AT&T for the money, not sure if my insurance would allow me to jump from one phone to another so easily... need to talk to the guys at the shop.
Thanks for any input
I don't know what you mean by YouTube does not start by itself but no android phone let's you play a video in the background. I would keep the infuse but get insurance on it.
What I mean by that is
On a PC (desktop or laptop etc... pad even)
A video starts playing by itself when you click the link, or refresh the page, this is not so
I mean perhaps the flash hasn't quite gotten there yet and I should appreciate the fact that I can even stream youtube videos in the first place
And the other part is, once I have this clicking, as soon as I minimize the web (press home) the music stops, same thing happens when I press the power button
(I like to look up a lot of music on youtube and listen to it in the background) while performing other tasks
thanks for the reply
Flash on Android is suspended when out of focus. There's nothing you can do about this, and it's unlikely that will change since Flash was discontinued for all mobile platforms.
flash is discontinued. It it still works and is useable just won't be updated

unfortunately this isn't just an infuse issue. Most phones i've tried won't let you watch youtube videos in the background, only if it's the main app open.
Get another Infuse. They're great phones and dirt cheap now. The only other one that's remotely better than the Infuse and the same size is the Skyrocket, but that one is $250 at the moment...and AT&T doesn't seem to be handing them out cheaply. Or you can drop down in size and get the S2...but that one is still $199 because it's a good seller. We should be getting our official GB release sometime in December so grab another Infuse and help decrease the surplus inventory.

Something like Fraps

I looking for some app, which can record my screen, like Fraps for PC. But i cant find something what work with my TF101. i tried this program https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zausan.zscreenrecorder&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS56YXVzYW4uenNjcmVlbnJlY29yZGVyIl0. but it giving me just 0,00 kb files. I have tried two other programs, but doesnt work too. Does anyone know some app which works?
I searched for the same thing some time ago. I found only apps/tools that record something like 5-10 FPS which is not enough if I want to record a video for my blog. I followed the development of Screencast Video Recorder for some weeks but the developer said that such tools are very unlikely to work with Tegra 2 because of the architecture of the chip or something like that
Had anyone of you used the Android SDK way to record android screen? It´s very lagy for me. The video on PC is slow with freezes and my TF is freezing too. Have you the same problem? Or do you know how to solve it?

Your personal downsides of the SurfaceRT?

Hi guys,
I guess we all spent quite I time now playing with our Surfaces, so I wonder what the things are that bother you the most right now?
For me personally it comes down to two main things: Performance and a real video player
Performancewise I think the Surface has really good hardware, but either WinRT or the App optimization clearly lacks so far, as there are quite a few times when I'm thinking: Come on, that's all you got?! And I'm not even thinking UI performance or Desktop performance, as I'm quite happy with that, Metro's probably not iOS fluent, but it's definitely fluent enough, and also the occasional little lag when opening Apps is fine for me.
But the in-App performance is simply too bad. No matter if it's games (I guess I didn't find a single game with at least modest graphics which was really fluent) or the video player (come on, not being able to play a single SD .avi fluently?!).
And that already brings me to my secong point: Video Player. To put it quite simple, either Microsoft will come up with a better looking, better performing player that supports all the usual types of files (no .mkv?!), or a third party player will do the job. Or I'm going to send it back, as that's simply a no go for a tab.
In then meantime I'm halfway between amazed and frustrated what the Surface can and can't do
I could do with a video player that will play dvd ts format as I have loads on my nas, if anyone knows one already would be good to know i loved media centre would be great to get something like that.
I found pinball being open even in background creates a lag issue so i always have to shut it down fully, i wander if other apps are also having this effect? Could explain lag issues as once closed mine is back to full no lag speed. It has same effect if its only thing open or there is a load.

I am able to play 720p xvid/avi ripped from bluray with no problem. What type of avi are you playing?
Here is my list of complaints:
- No LTE
- Lack of apps
- Random hang ups or general app slowness and/or crashing (not a major problem, and will hopefully be resolved through OS and app updates)
- My iPad now is boring to use
I try to play xvid avis which are way more fluent on my notebook... But also other avis are more fluent on the notebook...

There is a fix for the low volume. Check the tips and tricks thread.
I like the weight, right now the only downside I have is lack of VPN connectivity.
I'd like to see general performance enhancements but I believe those will come.

I think it's heavy as well...1/4 lb shaved off would be great, but it is the same weight as an iPad for those wondering.
My main complaint is the lack of POP3 email capability. I bought it mainly for work and my work email is a POP3, so this is a thing that will make me return it, even that I really love it far.

While somewhat convoluted, a work around is to send your work email to something like gmail which does support POP3, then link your gmail to the e-mail app on the surface.
To the OP, no tablet that I'm aware of supports MKV playback with first party video players. That is something the app store will take care of in time.
Anyways, no real complaints on my end, just some minor issues like the trackpad being a bit twitchy for my taste. Obviously the app store is a weak point, but that will get better with time and I bought the Surface understanding that.
Xda forum makes my Surface unresponsive if I'm using IE MetroStyle. If I switch to the full version everything works more or less fine.
thanks for posting these! I'm considering buying a surface and need to know these things.
I found in another thread that adding ad blockers lists in the Settings of IE fixes my performance issues when I'm using XDA, I tested and it works.

O/T but the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 does support MKV playback on the stock video player.

I don't know if this is also a wnrt app but a video app that might help in the app store is called multimedia8 give that a try they market it as being a multimedia playing app

It is a Windows RT app (which is different from a WinRT app- all apps are WinRT apps), however it still only plays the same files that the built-in player can. It's just a wrapper for that.
One of the primary reasons for getting a Surface for me was consuming video content. So far;
- Sky Go in the UK website uses Silverlight and there's no Silverlight support
- UK Football League websites 'Player' video services use Flash and they're not on Microsoft's whitelist (thank the lord for XDA Devs workaround for that one)
- No support for Windows 7 Media Center .wtv Recorded TV files, of which I have tons
Add on top of this buggy built in apps like People, Music & Video. There's enough about Surface that I still love it, and I know apps and updates will eventually resolve these issues but it's frustrating none the less.
My Surface creaks. Around the bezel at various spots near the edge of the tablet, if I press the bezel it goes in slightly as if there is a gap behind it or as if it hasn't been glued down properly. I tried this all around the tablet. I tried this on my friend's Surface last night but her screen is fine. So I am returning my Surface ? Does your creak?
I am missing a good forum to discuss issues people are having with their surface devices. I am totally happy with mine, but still misisng sume things. Where can I have useful discussions about this ?

Sorry for being to quick, I wanted to add some of my probs:
Pop 3 account. I already have read a lot of disussions on this and found some tips, but my provider only supports POP3
Synching my Windows Phon 7.5 (simply not working)
Locking the device when I close the lid, meaning if I close the cover (touch or type) I want the device to be locked
Support for older micro SD Cards. I cant my SD cards to work only the new SDHCX cards work
Does anyone know a good method to search the AppStore ? I realized that I am getting different results if I do a "general" search in the store or If I look for an app in the specific section. This is getting me mad.
When will MSFT release the final version of its Office 2013 products to the Surface users ? I already have it on my PC but the Surface still has a preview of Office 2013

Samsung Note 10.1 - HDMI connector - Two black bars

Just bought an HDMI connector for my Samsung note 10.1 to plug into my 1080P LG TV.
All connected up but I get two vertical black lines either side of the output on the TV. Like its not outputting from the device at the correct resolution. I've tried all the scaling options available on the TV but none of them get rid of the bars completly.
Called samsung help line but they couldnt help, they are phonig back later and will probably blame the TV although it works fine with XBox, skybox, laptops etc.
Anyone have an idea what would be the problem?
It's just a little bar of each side, right?
I get the same in my LG and Sony TVs... I think it's normal because of TV resolution.
But when I play videos (with stock video player), it goes fullscreen, so there's no big problem for my use.
I can't confirm right now, but with some games (I think) the fullscreen works well too.
EDIT: both TVs are FullHD too...
EDIT2: I just tested and my previously information was wrong... none of my games works in fullscreen. Sorry :/
Full HD is 1920 x 1080
I've tried on my two TVs
My LG 50 inch , 1920 x 1980, two big bars either side.
My Samsung 32 720P two bars on this too.
It's not outputting.
check if the tv has overscan to get round it.
