Connection pins by sim card - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I know not all the galaxy s3's have these extra connection pins next to the sim slot. Does anyone know what they are for? They look similar to the connection pins for the wireless charging on the left.

(Look at the far left board. You can see the pins next to the sim slot with a marker pointing up. On the far right you can see an extra notch cut out for those pins. Sorry this is the best picture I could find and I don't have a camera on me.)

Thought it might have something to do with the OEM flip cover, but there are no conductive elements on the inside of the cover.
Intriguing thing. Do other non-Verizon US variants have this?

So there are 2 places to use wireless charging? I am currently using the wireless charging on the other pins. You are 100% sure of this?
The note 2 has the 2 pin placements as well. One to the right of the sim and one to the right of the battery shown here:

Yea, there's one set of pins for wireless charging that are for the official Samsung wireless back cover, and the other set is for Verizon only.
Afaik Samsung's cover is not available yet, but Verizon's had been available for some time.

That's odd that Samsung would build the phone with 2 sets of charging ports. So verizon didn't think that samsung's ports were good enough for their purposes?

GPS problems poss hardware

I just wonder if this phone has the same problem as the Samsung vibrant cheap pin for GPS you had to take apart the bend it up and wedge a piece of copper between it so it would make a good connection.

I have 2 G3s & the GPS works perfectly in both of them(maybe I'm just lucky)
I don't even use my Garmin units anymore.

Yeah, mine is great. You want to see problematic GPS, just pick up a TF201, 300 or 700...

That's how I got the GPS on my S3 to work, only I didn't wedge a piece of copper I just bent it up a little. I'd rather keep my phone than get a used VZ replacement...
Ya the copper is optional after a period of time without a wedge though it will prob start doing the same thing again.

I miss my att iPhone 4. GPS would lock instantly and super accurate. This takes about 20 seconds sometimes and it still throws you off by a small distance. Not trolling just saying Samsung should put more effort into their flagship phone

I've noticed that my GPS's performance is dependent on the ROM I'm running. On CM10 it locks on instantly but on a stock ROM it takes for ever to lock on and really only locks on quickly when I'm already driving. My wife's S3 which has never been messed with instantly locks on with no issues.

Interesting... my GS3 would lock almost instantly on the stock TW ROM, but on CM10 it takes 30 sec or more to get even a weak lock with a clear view of the sky, and frequently loses lock when it's in the console of my car.

Sometimes you just simply get a bad battery. Does your phone charge with other batteries?
Ask samsung for a replacement, you're within warranty.

I had an experience with another phone where I always carried a spare and one day I accidentally left the spare in the car on a hot day and the same thing you are describing started happening to the one I left in the car. Luckily I haven't had any issues with the sg3 battery.

[Q] Skyrocket boots when charger is connected

I can't seem to find this particular problem anywhere. With my i727 off, when I connect the charger, any charger, it immediately boots up. I have turned off + on Boot - animation, sound, shutdown animation. I am on Embryo 6.11 and this has just started recently. Any suggestions?
If I had to guess I would say your usb port is dirty and contacts are being jumped.
Either that or the chargers you're using are no good.

Stock charger works fine. Aftermarket unit appears to be the culprit. Even the wife's Blackberry stock and car charger (AT+T) work OK.

Upside Down Charger Socket?

Thought the charger socket was damaged until I noticed it's 'upside down' compared to every other device I've ever had.
It's the same with s4, n4 and all other Androids I've used.

No, checking a list of all the devices I've had over the last 10 years it's definitely the other way round and it seems to be a modern trend.

Charging paused temperature too high

Okay I've seen people already posting about these issues, but nothing ever seems to be figured out. Either the thread dies, or the person swapped it out. Well I'm not able to do that. So here we go.
I spent $20 on an I727 Galaxy S2 Skyrocket. The phone did not come with anything, but I have an S4 charger, and a Note 3 charger. So I figured wth I'll be fine in that department.
Anyway. The phone will not charge. It says "Charging paused temperature too high". If the phone is off, and I try to charge it, it shows a caution sign next to the battery.
When I got it, it was running some version of ICS. I flashed JB, but the problem is still there. Needless to say the cache partition has been wiped, and I have done a couple factory resets. If I'm not mistaken, these guys shipped with gingerbread. So if someone thinks that will help, I'll try it, but I don't want to use that old system.
So I looked into other fixes. I saw that a possibility is the charging ic. Is that located in the usb part, or the actual mainboard? I'm not good with soldering so I may be out $20 if that's the case.
So what do you guys think?
Also gonna add this. Phone was not In use for around two hours. I feel like that is waaaay too hot.

I called Samsung, and the device is out of warranty. So the repair cost is $70, in case anyone wants to take this route. I do not. They couldn't tell me what was wrong.

Thanks. I ordered one last night off Ebay (all the Amazon ones were in China). It's supposed to be here in 2 days.
Have you tried to charge it by using usb cable connected to a computer? I think it could be charger problem, both chargers for s4 and note 3 have higher output current。Try a different charger with lower output current eg 1A.

The phone itself will limit the charging current, unless overriden via custom kernel, and since he's flashed a different rom I'd have to rule that out. Hopefully it's just a bad battery as that would be the cheapest fix...

I have tried using my desktop's usb port. Same thing. The only way I can get this thing to partially charge is by wrapping it in a cold pack. It gets that hot. Obviously I leave the battery out now for fear of a fire. Should have my replacement battery on Thursday.
Let me just add this really quick; just from the little bit that I have used this little guy, I think I may actually like it more than my note 3 (AT&T). It's just so easy to customize. With the Note 3, I'm so limited in what I can do.
Got the battery today. The problem still exists. What's next?

just a suggestion
1. open the phone as best as you can (remove battery and sim, memory cards)
2. use a q tip and rubbing alcohol and wipe everything you see, do it a few times
3. wait for 5 minutes, put phone back together
4. see if it works if not try step 5
5. remove all items again and put phone into 2 freezer (sandwich bags). I would suggest leave in there for 2 hours
6. remove from freezer and let sit for 30-60 minutes at room temp to warm up
now try charging
if that fails you can go extreme and freeze the phone remove and try charging it right away
let us know what happens
it was probably water damaged and shorted some of the circuits inside
Will try that out tomorrow. Thanks for the advice. I will let you know how it goes.

Still planning on trying today, but life is getting in the way. I'll pull the mainboard and usb port completely, and rub em down. The screen is fine, so I see no reason to subject it to anything.
Edit: I also got a hold of a local repair shop, and all the guy said was "Hi, honestly it's not worth fixing, you are better off buying a new phone. since the value of S2s is pretty low." He obviously doesn't get that this is not my main driver, and I am doing this for the sake of knowledge and fun.
Okay. I did the alcohol thing, which made it able to charge while powered off. It used to not even do that. It's in the freezer now.
