Camera Averaging/Long exposure - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hey everyone I'm new semi new to xda.
I'm an android photographer and have been extremely interested in being able to express long exposure.
I know there is a relatively new app on the iphone market that is gaining some steam.
It's called average camera pro and here's their description
Average Camera automatically takes multiple pictures (immediately or after a timer expires), calculates the average picture out of these and normalizes the result, to make the lightest pixel become white.

My question is, is it possible for any android, in my case the galaxy note 2, to do this? From what I've read it's essentially bracketing but it then averages all the shots out.
Thanks in advance,
David

Is it slow in camera functions?

In the Techradar review it mentioned they found it slow to move from shot to shot & slow saving. How fair a comment is this?

Well, its no DSLR, but I've not missed a shot due to it being slow. It is saving larger than most Phones sized pics, so its would not be surprising if it took a few more milliseconds.
The pluses way out number any perceived minuses in my book...

Do you think the review was unfair in this respect then?

The camera is a little slower than what I am used to, but it takes great shots. If timing is an issue I tend to use the Nokia Pro Cam application as my lens. It takes several pictures in rapid succession and overcomes this issue.
Overall, the phone and camera are exceptional in my opinion. Like everything else, there are some small tradeoffs.

Can I widen this out & ask owners of the 1020 how fair in general they felt that review was?

I would say it is a pretty fair review of the platform more so than the phone specifically.
I find that there is an app for almost everything I need on the platform, but I am not a super active social media person checking in every few minutes on 10 different platforms.
The phone itself is smooth and I have yet to experience any snags. The reviewer makes mention of the camera making it weird to hold. I actually find that it helps it from slipping out of my hand and prevents the camera from laying against surfaces when you put the phone down. Who would have thought that a large growth coming out of a phone would actually have some appeal to me.
Just for balance I will mention that I use an android tablet, so this is not some MS/Nokia pitch. It is just a really nice phone.
Now they just need to release the wireless charging cover so I can stop missing my 920 so much.
Hope this helps someone.
The review is written by an obvious iOS fanboy. He bags on Win 8 constantly. Ok, I'm 54, so I can give a rats ass about no Instagram or Vine, yet I can find any app I want and i probably have close to 100 already. From Formula One to Yelp. And wow, its too much for him to swipe down a bit to check his email. Yes, I think it was a highly biased review. Waiting on the Anandtech review myself, but doesn't matter. I've had it over a week and dig it over all. It fast, games are good, surfing great, screen doesn't really show the finger prints like my Samsung Focus did.
I was a bit bemused by his comments about notifications as I wouldn't say iOS was the greatest on this under the current version.
the procam app takes an extra second to save an image, but it's also saving a 5mp and a 38mp (?) image at the same time, so it's a given. if quick auto setting type images are needed, the stock camera lens as well as the nokia smartshot (?) lens both take fast pictures.
Camera Sensor Speed
The Giant Sensor speed is too low for Slow Motion.
It would be enough for 720P@60FPS but not for higher Framerates.
Also the Delay between 2 Pictures is toooo long.
The Processing power is like the Galaxy S2 or so...
Wait for the Nokia Lumia 1030 with Galaxy Note 4 Processing Power and 50 Megapixel Sensor.

Software (ease of use, features, etc)

When you hand your phone to granny to take a photo of you, can she get the job done? Rate this thread to express how you deem the Google Pixel XL's camera software. A higher rating indicates that the software is easy to use, fast, uncluttered, and inclusive of advanced features for when you need them.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
This is an interesting topic to cover. On ease of use, the camera app is easily a 5 out of 5 stars. But under included features I'd say it is a 3. I don't want it to have a billion different modes that all the other providers put into their apps, but the fact it DOES NOT include a manual shooting mode is a huge oversight in my mind. My guess is they did this to keep the size of the camera app down so they make it very fast to launch, which it is. At least make a pro version of the camera app that includes all the fancy manual modes that are FINALLY supported in Android that the other guys are including. I want to adjust the ISO, the exposure, the shutter speed. I want to get creative with my photos and take amazing pictures that are taken using the specs I pick. Just my 2 cents. So I'm voting this at a 4 overall
Panoramic setting sucks ass! Came over from an LG-G4 and that camera had an excellent Panoramic setting. I was hoping for at least something similar from Google, but it looks like they just leaped years behind when this came out.
Image came out super blury and it didn't even capture the whole image, maybe about 1/3 of it.
Oh. I give it a 1
Here is an example from the G4.
In the photo everyone is sitting in a large circle around a fire to give you an idea of the span of the panoramic.
This is hands down the least frustrating Android to date.

Best version of Android I've ever seen, no bloatware and everything just... works. Being able to reply from notifications is so helpful too. Software is the main reason I bought the phone, so yeah, I love it!
You asked about camera software but the title says software only, leading people to think you are asking about software experience only.

video quality issue, poor results (like color banding?)

Hi Guys!
I have recently bought the S7 (Exynos, Samsung camera sensors), considering the good price/performance ratio after reading a lot of reviews how good this phone was. Since I owned a low-budget 4 year old Huawei smartphone - which had a price tag about 25% of the S7's current price - maybe my expectations were too high on the camera and that's all it has to offer. Or is there some setting i'm missing?
I have tried a second device (about 1.5 year old), same circumstances, same results. Both have the latest Nougat firmware installed, no root or whatsoever. Photos are ok.
Both shots were made with default settings, automatic mode, HDR auto, flash off, 1080p/30fps:
1.) first I wanted to show my buddy with my new phone, what's the job he has to deal with soon (he is a painter)
vimeo.com/268656045
2.) when I saw the results, I made a second video in the kitchen, I would say rather good lightning than poor (although artifical), nevertheless same issue as seen in the first video
vimeo.com/270958764
(One more thing to add, Vimeo encoding did not cause significant degradation, what you see it's almost the same as you watched the original file.)
Why isn't the colour smooth? What causes those "waves"/bands around the somewhat yellowish focus in the middle?
It seems to be a problem with the "gradients". (nor sure if it's a proper definition of the problem, but the shadows have a similar effect on a solid/mono color surface as the light is less and less compared to the center) For me it's like the color banding issue, which AMOLED screens use to have sometimes, as I have read in several forums.
Thanks for any feedback and help in advance!
I get those banding circles if I take a photo with RAW enabled in Pro mode in bright light, probably just a limitation of the sensor under certain conditions
Could it be the colour depth of the sensor?

First of all thanks for the feedback! So you think it's not a malfunction, that's all the phone has to offer in such cases? I was wondering, that I did not read about similar complaints. No one has ever tried to record a video with similar background and similar lightning conditions? Or those who did, they never use to complain in forums?
Either way this result is disappointing.

Hi zeroprobe!
First of all, thank you for your feedback too! I really appreciate it. As far as I can tell, the video shows similar degradation like your pictures between 8bit vs 10bit, but what can be done? What does it mean?
Bump!
Did anyone experience similar issue while recording a video? Is there a solution or it is as it is, this device has basically a cr*p quality in certain circumstances? I wouldn't call it a great camera seeing this, rather disappointing.

I would say not good imo as it needs things not moving to take it correctly

There is/was a mod under the apps/themes section I believe that allowed you to adjust your exposure time up to 30 seconds when used with an app like Open Camera. I tried it on a few very cold, very clear winter nights, with a tripod, and did get a glimmer of stars but no matter how much I adjusted stop, exposure, etc I couldn't get very good pictures. It would either blow out the blues or get a blurry picture. The slightest movements, even from wind, would kill the photo. I doubt our phones will ever achieve anything near the quality you could get with even a cheap DSLR and some equipment.
Actually I don't think astronomy mode works with long exposure... As you said any movement no matter how slight, will blur the image.. even the star will move during long exposure and create a blurred image.
I used to have DSLR taking long exposure and you always get a "track". To get star in "dot", you need active sky tracking tripod...
I think Pixel 4's astronomy mode is enabled by taking hundreds (?) of photos with "short" exposure (like 1 second if on tripod) then combining all those pictures into one with the help of AI and the speed of Visual Core/GPU. People actually do this with even DSLR and using Photoshop to get beautiful night sky photos without tracker tripod (which is very expensive and requires extensive understanding on how star moves.)

Pixel 3 Camara better than Pixel 4 ?*♂️️

Hey,
Guys i Tried compared P3 is best than P4.
First one from p4 and second one from p3
https://www.dxomark.com/news/
This is probably a better way of comparing they do try to do as much as they can to keep it scientific.
Camera works for me and those two pictures I don't see any difference and I feel almost all cameras are worthy to make money from.
now it just takes the creative mind to get the right shot Wich really has been the case for many years. Unless you wanted low light capabilities in Wich the HTC m8 was the first to deliver low light capabilities with manual exposure time.

Well more noise on the second (Pixel3), have you had your eyes tested recently? Can you not see the striping on cans and the larger blocks in the noise.
*edit*
Both are 96 dpi. How do you expect people to evaluate the difference when they are sampled down to screen density?

Everything at this point is personal preference. Until we have software that can use all of the data from all the cameras at once, blend for the most accurate view and have some way to compare against true color palettes, we're kind of at a plateau for new camera tech. Most cameras on the market take pictures that look the exact same and any differences are because companies are working on better algorithms to smooth and sharpen within whatever particular application you use to tell the sensor to capture images.
If you're that concerned about the camera, then IDK, maybe BUY A CAMERA. And why dafuq does the thread title have the male glyph in it? ?
