I recently acquired a Photon Q LTE after being an Epic 4G user for years. I've flashed and rooted and beat that Epic 4G to bits over the years, but I can't seem to get CWM installed on this device for the life of me.
I've verified I've unlocked the bootloader and followed the directions in shabby's thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1856480) and on a couple other sites (http://www.andromods.com/basic-how-...r-user-install-cwm-recovery-photon-q-lte.html and http://www.androidegis.com/how-to/root-and-install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-motorola-photon-q-4g/), but it never seems like CWM wants to stick. Fastboot sends the file fine and says it writes it, but whenever I try to boot into recovery, I get the old school factory recovery with the Red Triangle and the Android System Recovery (3e) header, which is the factory bootloader (right?). Obviously SU isn't going to load in there.
My wife was playing with my new phone before I had a chance to do so (it was a gift), and I think she ran the latest OTA updates before I had a chance to even touch it. Looks like I'm running SW Version 77.8.10.XT897.Sprint.en.US and Android Version 4.0.4, so I don't know if this has been tested with that or if I'll need to revert to a lower version, root, and then upgrade.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
sometimes stock ROMs have a file in the system folder called recovery-from-boot, which reinstalls stock recovery on boot. if you have flashed SU, try looking in /system, and if that file is there, you can rename it to recovery-from-boot-bak, and that should disable it.

I haven't been able to get SU installed as I can't get CWM installed. Is there another way to push SU to the phone without CWM?
Running terminal emulator, I can see there's a recovery-from-boot.p file /system, which is probably my issue. So basically, I need to get SU on there somehow to kill it, unless there's a way to kill that file with desktop adb or something.

ok, i see. damn that's odd, because i haven't seen anyone run into this. i'm trying to think if there
is a way to boot straight into recovery from the bootloader, without booting up the system. i don't think you will be able to modify the file in /system without SU.
---------- Post added at 09:15 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:11 PM ----------
come to think of it, i think there is a rootkit somewhere here that will install SU without flashing recovery. can't find it atm tho... but i believe it is said to still work on your software version..
actually if i remember correctly, i think it might be Dan Rosenberg's Motofail2Go exploit:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1940594
the other thing you might try is flashing TWRP recovery instead of CWM. i am not sure but maybe TWRP automatically disables the recovery-from-boot file. i used TWRP and i see my file is already renamed and i never consciously did that!
I'll try to get a few minutes tonight and give that a whirl. Will report back as soon as I can.
Thanks!

i just posted at the same time as you, so if you didn't see it, perhaps TWRP recovery is worth trying too!
Motofail2go got SU installed, which allowed me to rename that file. Then was able to follow the procedure to install CWM just fine.
Thanks much for the help!
Great, glad you got it working!
Did CWM not stick on my Photon Q ?
What is the key sequence to boot into CWM on a motorola photon Q ? I did an motorola upgrade before I tried any of this so my version nmbers are the same as orty.
SW Version 77.8.10.XT897.Sprint.en.US and Android Version 4.0.4
Here's how it went. - The bootloader unlock seemed to work fine. Things were a little hairy with the CMW install. I am doing this on ubuntu and much like orty I had to make the best guess from various posts. Since I'm not sure of the key sequence to boot for CWM - you can bet I was not holding any buttons when the thing rebooted after downloading CWM. I looked around for a while before I found anything about the key sequence and now if I try a boot holding power & volume up I get an dead android with an red triangle ! in his tummy. I gather this means failure. I did however manage to install Superuser from ChainsDD. Does having Superuser installed mean anything about whether I have CWM installed or not? I am confused! From this post I gather I should try the CMW install again and hold the buttons when it reboots? What do you see to indicate you are in CWM? Some sort of menu?
If I knew how I would try and use the installed SU to look in /system to see if there are any of the mentioned files.
Can somebody give me some clues on next steps I can try at home tonight. Much appreciated!!

Yeah, sounds like you got into recovery properly by holding volume up while powering on. But it also sounds like your CWM might have gotten overwritten. If you did get SU installed, you can use a file program like Root Explorer or ES File Explorer to look for recovery-from-boot.p in your /system directory, and rename it to recovery-from-boot.bak. then reflash CWM.
smorealt rorer
Ok so a little program to browse for files. I'll load that because I'll blow it away when I redo CWM anyway.
---------- Post added at 11:01 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:48 AM ----------
Yip there is it - recovery-from-boot.p in /system - so just so I understand - If I rename it now -does this mean it will not be drop-dead necessary to boot straight into CWM after I download CWM onto the phone and it reboots - because the phone won't be setup to undo the CMW anymore.
Also - am I correct that you can make backups using CWM?

Yep, correct on both counts you'll see the option 'backup and restore' in CWM.
Well no go on the rename - recovery-from-boot.p cannot be renamed because the file system is read-only.
I installed Total Commander and when I try and remount / as r/w with it I get re-mount error su called failed. Seems my su is not the real thing.
Will it work if I install CWM and boot straight from the download into the CWM - can I rename the file from there somehow?
If you can get adb access in CWM, there should be a command to rename that file, i'm not sure if it would be from adb shell or not... perhaps Google it or someone else will chime in here. You would probably need to flash SU first, then try adb and type su first and see if you get # prompt.
Otherwise you can go thru the full cycle- flash CWM, boot straight into recovery, flash SU, reboot and rename the recovery file, reflash CWM. Using adb in CWM would be the more elegant way, haha.
I am OK with full cycle - just explain this to me --> boot straight into recovery, flash SU,
I think I know how to boot straight into recovery -> but how do I flash SU from there?
Do I have to get the su.zip onto the phone before I boot into recovery? How do I do that?
Which reminds me of another question the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2017748 thread says
Bugs:
Usb mass storage isnt working,
Is this still true? Does this mean if you install CWM you can't mount your phone as mass storage in anyway ?
Yeah, load the SU zip onto your phone before going into CWM, since usb storage might not mount. Easiest way might be just to DL the zip on the phone by going to the thread on the phone, then navigate to your downloads folder in CWM to flash it. Otherwise if you have a more recent version of Ubuntu, you might be able to access device storage thru usb to transfer the zip... or else you can do that in Windows(or Mac maybe?).
Edit: flashing CWM won't break usb storage in general, it just doesn't seem to mount in CWM.
Great - so I downloaded the SU.zip from my phone and it is in /sdcard/Download for later. So I assume loading CWM does not erase what is in the download folder ?
And thanks for explaining that CWM just break usb mount in CWM not generally.
Much Much appreciated.
CWM shouldn't erase whats in the download folder. If it does, there's an issue there.
And why not just use MotoFail2Go to push in SU and then use RomManager from the appstore to flash CWM from the OS itself, because that fixes the rewrite issue as well and is a much simpler process?

i always keep a Windows installation around, just for certain programs. but, by doing this the manual way, at least you get to see what is being done, instead of programs doing it for you

im not sure what im missing- i have smooth maximus x, rom manager, and it has the recovery or whatev- but when i boot into recovery it boots the stock one- wtf! the menu for rom manager is not flashing the img. it says it is. just erased everything for nothing!problem?
If its going to the stock recovery, its working fine! when you are on stock recovery menu, choose install packages (or whatever it is) and that will get you into clockwork recovery.
But its not loading to clockworks revovery. It just goes to standard start up when that option is selected.
correction
Sorry correction- I try that, and it says "signature verififaction failed- installation aborted." Why?

why are you using ROM manager to flash the recovery if your on SMX ? SMX has bali 2.2 in it wich has CWM built into the kernel so your recovery should be the RED voodoo CWM recovery by default. and if stock blue recovery is coming up for some reason yu should be able to reinstall packages cause SMX has the modded stock recovery already
No no no, I'm not on smx- I'm trying to install the darn thing. I'm still on the stock rom. When I boot into recovery there are 4 options-
Reboot now
Wipe data
Wipe cache
Install packages
When selecting install packages, it fails via signature verification. There are no cwm recovery options available, either.
ooh .. your problem is you have to be rooted which im sure you already are ..
then go to the CWM thread in the DEV section and apply the modded recovery to system/bin . this will make the recovery ignore the signature check so you can flash CWM then SMX
use root explorer or adb push this file
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2993191/recovery
to /system/bin
then put this file on the root of ur sd
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2993191/update.zip
and put maximus x rom on ur sd
reboot recovery
reinstall packages
now ur in cwm
- Wipe Data/Factory Reset
- Wipe Cache Partition
Go to mounts and storage
UNMOUNT CACHE
MOUNT DATA
MOUNT SDCARD
UNMOUNT SYSTEM
install zip from sd
choose zip from sd
look for maximus x rom install and u should be good
after you flash, go back to mounts and storage (before rebooting) and make sure your mounts look like this
UNMOUNT CACHE
MOUNT DATA
UNMOUNT SDCARD
UNMOUNT SYSTEM
this is as easy as i can put it
Thank you very muych for your persistence to help! I am a noob and cannot find the ty button. I'm a newb, I know.HOWEVER....…I am not a newb to this in general, and I have tried that already. I read that forum . Duh!this is what happens when trying to move the file to sys.bin:
Root explorer says:
Paste operation failed-
Does not say why. I found a solution! Another forum says to downgrade to stock recovery e2, then cwm will work. But I have to get odin and crap. So if there is something I'm STILL missing, and can't move the file there for that reason, don't hesitate to enlighten me.
you need to move the modded recovery to /system/bin/recovery, anything that tells you to downgrade is not correct, as we do not have anything to 'downgrade' to. The modded recovery from Krylon does the same thing. you should be following this:
1. download the recovery.zip from krylon
2. extract the .zip and copy the recovery file to your sdcard
3. use root explorer to copy the recovery from the sdcard to /system/bin/recovery
if it fails, make sure that /system is mounted as read write, rather than read only, there should be a button in root recovery to mount read/write.
Thank you sir! I was comitting a syntax error... maybe by attempting to copy the file from the wrong directory. No, the downgrade works... I was reffering to e2 recovery for samsung rather than e3 which requires signature ver. But that takes waaaaaay longer. So thank you. I was trying to copy the whole zip, rather than the actual file because I thought I had extracted it(stupid). But yeah. Ty! Will see if cwm works now.
Glad to hear that it worked for you, let me know how cwm works out for you, as well as whatever parts come after that for you. Don't forget the Thanks button if someone helps you
The files are in their proper places, all is right.
But when I boot into recovery, I am startled with fright!
For its still normal, its still stock-
So help me ill throw this phone like a rock!
Haha. But seriously. Still same issue.
FAILS TO INSTALL ANYTHING
"Signature verification failed- installation aborted."
It seems I will have to do it the hard way by installing e2. This was this issue for the galaxy s.
Why does no one else with a sidekick have to do this!!!!? Why is it not giving y'all signature verification errors! Why is there no video yet?
Sig verification issues relate to the recovery. it should still look like stock, as the original CWM is a fake flash. Make sure you have the cwm update.zip from Krylon's thread in your sdcard.
It is!!!!!! I think I'm going to cry.
Recovery is saved (overwrite) as instructed.
Update is on sd card as instructed.
Can't be corrupted, deleted files and tried again.
Boot into recovery and stock shows (as it should.)
Re-install from package (only option other than data wipe and reboot)
Whole signature failure
Signature verification failure
Installation aborted. :'(
i'll make you a script and a zip of everything to do this for you later, but that won't be until a bit later, still have to drive my girl home. in the meantime, can you try redownloading the cwm from ayo's original post? also, have you tried the rom manager version of cwm?
Roger that.
And it would be greatly appreciated. If it is, however, just another list of the instructions as mentione previously in this thread, or in the original rom post, forget it. But if there's something new then sure. Heck, a video would be great. I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one watching it either. And I will redownload all of it again(non-existant jesus christ) and try again in the meantime. Thank you again for your effort and supporth surely it must be that I am the only on with this issue. So I am unique on xda! Silly video...
i could even go so far as to skype someone to SHOW them ive got it right or what i have done, in which case i would hope for an "ah ha!now that thurz ya problem right thur neow."
Ok, I have a script for you, it's semi-tested? I already have root in my adb, so I can't test it as well, but it should work. let me know what happens. just unzip this, and run the run.bat.
this will reboot you into recovery after it's done, so make sure you're not doing anything on your phone when you run it.
https://sites.google.com/a/stephenduvick.com/www/files/sk4gtestoneclickroot.zip?attredirects=0&d=1
Credit to Noobnl for the original script, and krylon for the fake flash.
So how exactly do I run the run.bat? Its not an exe or script file... is there a command list I need to put in? (Gawd, the last custom rom I installed(cliq xt) was so much easier, before there even was a clockwork mod. It was easier, and that was when it was the hard way!) And my phone is already rooted, sure that doesn't matter though.
Hey guys
I screwed up my vold.fstab trying to get "_ExternalSD" back.
Unfortunately! I did not run a nandroid before I made the change.
Now, I can dirty flash my rom on top, or go back to a nandroid from a few days ago, but I'd really just like to recover and go on my merry way. And maybe learn something in the process.
Only thing is, I can't figure out how to access the phone other than the External SD card through CWM.
Can I mount the internal /system and access through USB? Is there some facility to copy a file from one point to another? Any other methods? I guess the phone has to be up to run ADB, right?
I don't know how to generate a flashable zip but I could extract the original version of the file from the original rom. I assume that its non trivial to create a flashable zip, but maybe someone can comment? It looks like there is signing and certificates involved..
thanks for any ideas

this is why i hate it when people make those guides.
messing with the vold.fstab is dangerous (even though its only a few lines) if your trying to recover your data, give up. its not going to happen. (sorry)
when you edit the vold.fstab it messed up the partitions on your internal SD card and most likely did the equivalent of wiped your /system partition. (or another important one.) your actually lucky it did not completely brick your phone.
your post was a little vague, but if you can, just restore an older nandroid, or wipe everything and install another ROM. (you can try dirty flashing but i dont think itll work)
if you cannot access CWM, then follow the steps in This guide. it should get you back up on your feet. after you follow that guide flash a gingerbread ROM (any gingerbread rom will do fine) then you can reboot and flash any ROM you want. (it needs this to fix a quirk in that script)
Hope you get it fixed
EDIT: re read your post, if your feeling adventurous and want to give it a shot, boot into CWM and connect it via usb. you can now get into an ADB shell on your phone by typing 'adb shell' if you have adb all setup and working. (im working from memory here so dont quote me on any of this)
now, you should be able to access your /system folder from that shell. be very careful though, i dont have much experience right here, and if i remember correctly you might not be in the full root directory yet)
if you can get into it try replacing your vold.fstab with a stock one,
if you dont have a stock one lying around, make a nandroid of the current state of the rom, then flash another rom, pull the vold.fstab, then re-restore back to the broken one and restore it (id upload mine but my phone is OOC right now )
after that just reboot and hope it resolves itself, if not then just follow my advice above
and keep that guide i linked to handy, messing around in CWM has the ability to brick your phone, if it does, then just follow that guide.

re read your post and updated my last post right after you posted
after dealing with noobies all day, i forget sometimes people want to try big things
Thanks guys. The info I was missing was there's no special trick to attaching adb while in CWM! Just plug in!
My phone is back up and running and partitions are fine as far as I can see after just booting up.
Hi there! I messed up with the vold.fstab filfe on my tablet – I replaced it with a downloaded file with the intention to transfer apps to my external SD card.
Now my tablet is only showing the startup logo and won’t continue loading. I can access recovery mode. Now I want to restore the original vold.fstab file.
My questions:
1. Using the Android SDK, the file explorer does not show any files, though my tablet is recognized.
2. Using adb push, it yields an error: permission denied, how to successfully push the original vold.fstab and replace the existing vold.fstab?
3. If I dump an image of my tablet and edit the dumped image, would this be easier compared to the steps above?
Thanks!

Mansa_noob, yes, my tablet is rooted. I followed some instructions about adb but had an error saying access denied, and also no files are displayed at file explorer. See my posts above. I also mounted it successfully. I will post some sreenshots later.
Please if you have some instructions, I am willing to try.

Hi twitchyEye, it did not work. It attemps to install (using the install update from ext sd card) but then says installation aborted.
Any more suggestions? Thanks
What recovery are you using? I suck with adb so I got nothing on that front.
It was the stock recovery from my Tablet. I don't have it on hand right now, I will post later. The chipset is RK3066. My problem is my tablet has no official support on the internet (maybe becaue it's still new). Model is Skyworth S71(3G).
I see. Yeah this is over my head man. I thought for sure you were running a custom recovery and it was an easy answer. I'm actually struggling right now with adb myself with a similar issue something about permissions whenever I try to do anything to my phone. So I guess right now would be a perfect time for somebody to chime in with a smarter answer!

I want to try, but the stock recovery is my last hold as I have no stock ROM. If I overwrite the stock ROM, I cannot reinstall it as I don't have a copy of it.
So why not flash cwm with nvflash and then make a backup of your current stock rom? I did exactly that.

also the v5.0.28 recovery because as of now v6.0.1.2 has no sdcard partioning support because it is new.
you can choose which you like best...
put on root of your sdcard ...
make sure the file name is recovery.img
now download http://dl.dropbox.com/u/56403887/flash_image.zip
this is the flash_image file to to flash the recovery..
unzip it should have the name flash_image
use root explorer to copy the file to /system/bin
open term emulator get su rights and cd to /system/bin and type chmod 0755 flash_image
now cd back to /
still with su rights type flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
if no output... wahoo.... if you get error start over
dont reboot yet...
go to playstore and download a app called Quick Boot its free and handy you want have to hold buttons to reboot into recovery..
ok...now the moment of truth run quick boot and choose recovery...you should get a su ask from superuser grant it....phone should reboot into cwm recovery...if it did... wahoo... you now have cwm
keymap is fixed and is like this.... search button to select.....return button to return..home button to scroll..
way better than before,,,to me any way...
still will get error about bad boot message but i will fix later it don't affect anything..

Hey ICE.....Is it suitable for Optimus Net P690 in India.....?????
Does this support custom themes?
p690f can't get qtadb to link phone/PC
Hi
I am stumped, as a complete novice to smart phone/linux.
At present my status is:
1. Phone is rooted, so I was able to get this done from my PC.
2. Now I have copied the recovery.img & flash.img to SD card.
3. I have Terminal emulator on phone &/or Sd card.
4. When in USB storage is activated & connected to PC, I can see all the files but on terminal emulator.
5. I have Qtabd on my PC but it will not 'see' my phone either in USB storage activated or not activated or in debug mode.
6. When debug mode activated, USB storage is deactivated. Seems both not able to be on.
7. In one of the XDA threads there was mention of 'demounting' the sd card so have also tried that in same combinations of SD/ debug.
I have been trying to sort this out on another forum but seems there is more info available on here.
I am having a huge problem tying to get Recovery working direct on the phone, mainly due to my inexperience on these devices, I am very happy to learn if pointed in right direction. Of course my concern also is not to brick the phone!!
Any assistance or links to suitable areas appreciated.
Whoops seems I posted on wrong thread, thought it was the similar one for P690, applogies.
WaHooo
I managed to finally get recovery activated using the terminal emulator on the SMALL screen of my phone!!
However I would still very much appreciate sorting out Qtadb connection as I am sure sometime in the future I will need to do some additions/deletions to my p690.
So, any info etc will be appreciated.
For any other Newbies who may see this,
1. To copy from a browser text long touch at start/end of text, then drag to high light.
2. To copy, touch highlighted area, you should get a message 'copied to clipboard'. To cancel, if you make a mistake like I made MANY touch some where else on screen.
3. With Terminal emulator started, (P690), after entering 'su' tap touch screen to bring up keyboard and select 'return/enter key'. This gives you Super User.
Long touch screen brings up menu withe 'paste',select.
4. To toggle back to browser, to same screen you were working on, hold down second key on bottom. This will bring up all the recent icons for what you were working on, select 'browser'. Continue copy line by line.
5. To toggle back to emulator, long press 2nd from left key & select emulator.
Hope this assists someone.
The p690 and this phone are not the same. This phone is from Net 10, idk about the p690, but this phone is. This one is also cdma. I think the p690 is gsm. They are NOT cross compatible. I'd brick my phone if I used a p690 rom.
sorry guys been working on code....

Update please
Hi there. Been crack flashing my phone for a while and finally got my wife's phone rooted today.
Just wondering if anyone has had any luck flashing a custom recovery yet (eg CWM or Amon Ra)? If so, please post a guide. As I have been unable to find anything using my Google-fu.
Also, all your links were removed. So other than hinting at a solution. This thread is zero help.
Thanks in Advance!
My Phone: HTC Evo 4G (flashed to Cricket)
Wife's Phone: LG Optimus (LGL45C)
I have a question regarding etc..... Does your rom include a tun.ko file and if not do you know of anyone or anyway to run openvpn/droidvpn or just changeing kernels would be nice...
I can't root.
I have an L45C with 2.3.4 on it and it just won't root. I have tried: Gingerbreak, z4root, and unlock root, none of them worked. I tried gingerbreak a few times at day, and all night as I slept, but my phone just isn't rooting!
If any of you have gotten root please do tell me how.
no updates yet?
Can someone please post a link to this ROM? I had it but can't find ir and I need it bad, phone is semi-bricked and I have a corrupt backup. PLEASE!!

ROM/Recovery LGL45C
What are the results of flashing this recovery? Was it successful to flash as I have a backup for the phone that I have made thankfully.
results are great. For what little ROM development, this is the best we have. Its just a ClockworkMod recovery image and then a rooted ROM. I'm still using it to this day and with all the apps and tweaks I've added, this phone rocks!!
My only complaint is I'm running out of internal space so I need to figure something out with that. Maybe I will try to re-partition my card to ext4 and try to increase internal memory by like 100mb. Apps2SD only goes so far sadly. I'm also going to try to put Team Win recovery on after I make sufficient backups. Let me know if I can help.

I was able to install the CWM Recovery to the phone just fine. Realized what I was doing incorrectly. Now to test the only ROM's that I know of that are available for the Q from Area51. Are there anymore ROM's being developed. The L45C is not a bad phone, just needs more lightweight ROM's to work with it.
Hey guys. I admit it....I'm a noob here (man it hurts to say that).
Anyway, I've been attempting to root my Tab 2 10.1 (P5113 w/ 4.0.4 upgrade) using the method weltwon describes here: thread 1657056 and I keep running into the following problem. When attempting to root it Odin keeps getting stuck at the "recovery.img" step (I've let the tablet sit for nearly 30 minutes at that step with no luck).
Based on some other posts I've attempted all the following with no luck:
Removed Lockout Security & Antivirus from the tablet
Disabled antivirus on the computer
Ensured the tablet is directly plugged into a motherboard usb port
Nothing has helped. The only thing I haven't tried is shifting to a different computer (only have a single computer at home). Fortunately I can force reboot the tablet and it comes back up to the stock ROM with no issues.
I'm using Odin V1.85_3 and running Windows 7 64-bit. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Keep trying... odin sucks. Heimdale is better, but it is a little more complicated lol still figuring it out on my end with my infuse every once in a while.
If nothing else works you might be able to restore to stock... but I agree Heimdall is a better option.

Well, I thought Heimdall did it. Guess I celebrated a bit early there. When attempting to boot into CWM I get thrown over to the Stock Android Recovery. Based on some more searching it looks like I'll have to roll back to 4.0.3 before flashing recovery.img. Back to the web and to figure that portion out.

Alan, that's because the tabs have a script called install-recovery.sh that re-installs the stock recovery on each boot. you will need to find and remove that before the recovery flash will hold.
trying to find the thread that talked about where that script is located.... but if you have root explorer installed search and you'll find it. I would suggest saving a copy of it to the sdcard before removing it from the system... just incase it is ever needed for anything.

Ok, now I feel like my head is starting to spin. The script is located in /etc (not to surprising there). This is where my head starts to spin. /etc has permissions of 777 (which rather blew my mind based on past unix and linux experience). Install.recover.sh has permissions of 544 which I would expect for an executable in /etc. That means I have to have root permissions to modifiy the file since root is the owner.
So, from my understanding I need to get CWM recovery installed so I can flash cwm-root which will grant me root access......seems kinda like a case of the chicken and the egg to me.

Ok, I think I may see how to get around this.....Heimdall is rebooting my tablet after the recovery flash. Need to figure out the command line parameter that prevents reboot and then reboot directly to CWM Recover (guessing there but that's what I'm going to look for at least).
That did it.....found the --no-reboot common argument for Heimdall and then manually rebooted directly to CWM Recovery. That allowed me to boot into CWM Recovery without the install.recover.sh shell running. Waiting for first reboot after flashing the CWM-Root.....rebooted installed SuperUser and disabled SuperSU but still can't rename or delete the /etc/Install.recover.sh (even though the root browser was given su permissions by SuperUser) ..... sigh
I know I'm rooted because I can reboot using Quick Boot after granting it su access - that's just strange.
Finally, figured it out...You can't modify or delete Install.recover.sh in /etc. You must do it at the following location /system/etc

Hey Alan, sorry... been away from the forums for a couple days. But it looks like you got it figured out you are correct on the Heimdall command, the only thing different that I did is that I already had root explorer purchased... so after the SuperUser install I just ran it to move the install_recover.sh to my SD card
Glad to hear you got it working!
I am trying to Flash the Stock ROM on my Galaxy Y PRO after it is gone into a bootloop (by itself), i am using ODIN , but it got stuck on Flashin the recovery img

How to use Heimdall when I have bl, ap, etc
Hi guys,
I've been reading you for a while, but this is actually my first post.
Currently stuck with a "Unfortunately, Launcher has stopped" on my tablet, with no access to any menus except my Settings. The menu bar (back, home and multitasking) is now gone. I've got my keyboard to navigate, but something in the display is also quite wrong, image seems to be zoomed, or set at the wrong resolution. Tried to search on the forum, but all posts found were not about the same rom or the same issue. Sorry if I missed one.
Here's a little background story:
I've rooted my TF300T about a month ago and installed Hydro 4.1. It has been working very well since then, but in the last days, I thought that my tablet felt a little slower than usual, so I started searching if an update to 4.2 was available.
I'm not sure if this is what caused the issue or not, but I went into my "Power button" menu and went into "Recovery" mode (instead of Shutdown, reboot, etc.), which then restarted my unit into TWRP menu.
I then selected the "System" submenu and simply touched "Reboot". (terms might not be exact). At the first reboot, I got the problems that I described.
Can't do much, popup keeps appearing on my screen. I haven't tried yet to clear the cache of my Launcher, which I'm trying to avoid as I would prefer to avoid rearranging 5 pages of icons, but between that and reinstalling everything, obviously I prefer to simply lose my display preferences.
Can anyone help me about what caused my issue, and what can I do now?
Here are 2 screenshots that I took, showing that my bottom menu is missing and that the fonts aren't set right (clock and left icon). Also, my notifications menu now appears near the middle of my screen.
EDIT: I unfortunately cannot post links yet
I remember installing an app (with root access) that gave me a menu about my resolution. One thing that I'm wondering, could it be that the resolution got changed and I simply never rebooted since the change, which now caused my Launcher to crash? How can I launch an app without having access to the app menu?
Thanks in advance for your help.

What you describe is likely caused by changing the resolution. Are you still running hydro 4.1?
You can likely recover by replacing your build.prop or editing the one you now have. build.props are usualy rom specific so you need one from the rom you are using.

Yes, still using Hydro 4.1. I do have a build.prop editor installed on my tablet, but since I can't launch app, I don't know how to do it.
I'll try to connect the tablet to my PC and see if I can get access to my file from there.
Thanks!

I'm presently downloading 4.1 hydro to retrieve the build.prop. If you unzip it the build.prop is /system/build.prop also located there on your tab. I have another fifteen minutes to download if you wish for me to supply the file!

We should be able to push with adb, set permissions, and reboot.
---------- Post added at 04:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:36 PM ----------
http://www.mediafire.com/?tk3cifzci0vw24e
place the build.prop from the zip file into the directory with fastboot.
Open terminal or cmd in the directory with fastboot.
Boot into twrp – twrp provides adb access by default.
Use twrp mount menu and check mount system.
Then type
adb push build.prop /system/build.prop
adb shell chmod 644 /system/build.prop
in twrp reboot system
type
adb kill-server

Ok, my Fastboot folder is currently at the root of my C drive on my PC
I entered your command and got after the first one "adb server is out of date. killing...
* daemon started successfully *
error: device not found
FYI, before I got your last post, I used Android commander to push the build.prop that I still had on my PC when I installed the custom hydro 4.1 rom.
After my reboot, I got the Asus logo, than a black screen that does nothing.
I then rebooted in Fastboot and followed your instructions.
So now, it seems that my pc doesnt see my tablet anymore when in TWRP. is this normal? Do I need to restart it after checking "Mount system"?

Slowdown, I'm getting behind. I'm willing to help but you are now worse off than before.
Sit tight for five minutes and I'll try to give you a twrp flashable zip for your build.prop and hope that is the extent of the damage.
If not we'll try to go from there.
http://www.mediafire.com/?ybplc1ws8uvskhf
This is a twrp flashable zip that only replaces your build.prop with the one from hydro 4.1.

Alright, I'll wait for your answer before trying anything else.
So now, I've got your latest .zip file.
Still can't see my TF300T from my PC, so, ADB is a no go for now.
In fact, I do see it in the Device Manager, but since my last reboot, it now shows an exclamation mark on it as if my drivers weren't good.
Since you mentioned the file is a flashable zip, I'm guessing that I can flash it using TWRP without going through my PC?
Can you give me precise info on that, since I do not want to mess with my system more than I already did.
Thanks

Alright, I'll wait for your answer before trying anything else.
So now, I've got your latest .zip file.

Look at the bottom of my previous post. You will find a new link there. Just flash with twrp and reboot. Don't worry about wiping or any of that, just flash and reboot.

Yep, that's the file I was talking about.
I now need to flash and reboot, your file is at the root of an SDcard in my TF300T, I go through the Install menu and then, can't seem to view the content of my sdcard. Tried to mount it first but can't select it either, it will simply stay on "Internal Storage".
EDIT: The RCK icon is the only one right now that boots me into something. If I try the USB icon, it just stays on that screen forever.
Trash the two zips you have downloaded. I'm providing a new one for when we get back to that point. And there will be no doubt about which zip you are using.

OK. First I'll explain your earlier comment about adb being old. Twrp expects a recent adb or refuses to allow adb access ( we'll not worry at the moment about that but it is something you need to address later (I hope).
If you have a cord between your tablet and pc remove it. The sdcard may be mounted as data on the pc and not allow twrp to mount it.
You have been using this sdcard prior to this exercise?
Do you have any backups or flashable zips or anything of that nature on your internal sdcard?
If so what?

Zips trashed, kept only the one provided in your latest answer.
No cord between PC and tablet. Still unable to click on "Using external SD" or "Mount SDCard". It simply won't let me check the box or switch the bullet.
As for using this SDcard before, yes in a PC, but no, first time in my Asus. Also tried with another one just in case and same result.
As for backups and flashable zips, I kept everything from when I did my root and rom install.
I do know that I have a backup in the Restore menu of TWRP, which seems about the time I installed it. I suppose I could simply do a restore and avoid additional headaches, but my question is, what exactly will it restore? At this point, I'm mentally prepared to go back to what I had after installing Hydro 4.1, as long as I can use the tablet ASAP.
Asap = restore your backup.
If I'm restoring a different rom I'll wipe Cache, Dalvik Cache, and Factory Reset. If the backup is from the same rom I'm flashing and I want to keep the apps I have Installed since the backup I won't Factory Reset.
Good Luck!

So, I did the restore, and I'm up and running, but, no more Hydro 4.1. I guess my backup was probably what got done right before the installed it.
The good thing is, my tablet is working again and my root is still active. The bad part is that I'm gonna have to dig my head again in all the tutorials and try to find the best one.
Hey, I wanted to say a huge thank you for all your help, if it wasn't for guys like you, newbies like me would be stuck with useless thin computers.

Great I'm glad you are happy. I had hoped for the outcome you expressed but this works also.
You're welcome!
