I bought a new phone. My old phone (HTC Inpsire 4G, rooted, running RCMIX 2.3.5 Kernel ROM), after being deactivated, is no longer showing the contents of SD card to my Windows 7 computer. I tried removing all USB and Phone drivers, tried different USB cables, and different USB ports, nothing works.
Windows can see the phone as Removable Disk (D) (just like in the past where I was able to view contents on the PC), but when I select the option to mount as Hard Disk, nothing happens. I need to access SD card to make a backup to my PC, then do a full phone/SD card wipe.

I created a gold card a few days ago to root my MyTouch and all went well. Phone got rooted, had Hero rom installed.. but now I cannot read any other SD card in the system aside from the Goldcard. Any device I plug in that is considered "Drive 1" is unreadable.
Is it now fubar or is there a way to un-do this crap?

could you elaborate more? is this a built in memory card reader? USB Reader? phone plugged in over usb?
have you try to reformat your card ?
I created the gold card with an external USB card reader.
XP cannot read the drive anymore, let alone format it. I have tried with multiple cards, card readers, etc.
I plug in my new Hero via USB and I get the "Please insert a disk" popup.
If I load up the HeX editor used in the gold card creation, it shows the Hero phone as Disk 1, which was the disk I did the Hex editing to.
As stated though, if I plug in any USB card reader and place the gold card inside, it reads that SD card just fine. Any other card says please insert disk. I have tried with 5 different SD cards.
it sounds to me like you need to uninstall drivers and reinstall. are you using windows xp or vista or what?
XP, but it looks like it's any device that ends up becoming "Drive 1" I have tried uninstalling drivers.
What does the HeX program actually do when you paste the goldcard.img values in?
Try booting your machine up with an Ubuntu livecd to see if it can read it
I had a similar issue to this and i solved it by inserting the card you want to format in the Mytouch, Mount the SD card through USB mode on the phone, and if it mounts as a drive through the phone, go ahead and format it there from windows.
Did that fix your other issues? I did the goldcard through an external flash reader, not through the MyTouch.. and as it would be, I do not have the MyTouch anymore, I have a Hero.
If I try and format the card on the hero it says please insert a disk.
The reason this is an issue is I cannot use HTC Sync nor the CoPilot Central software because it cant mount the phones SD card.
i created the goldcard through a reader and not the mytouch. once i realized that it stopped reading my micro sd cards, it tried to get it mounted on the mytouch running a hero rom which it was able to and i formatted it on windows while it was mounted. I think the issue now is that your micro sd adapter might be corrupted from the goldcard creation. do you have a spare micro sd adapter and reader available? try and see if you can see the card from there.
I should be able to mount the SD card from my Hero in windows correct? If so, this is a brand new device, brand new USB cable, brand new SD card plugged into a totally different USB port. Still doesn't work.
So I bought a used nexus one, att 3g running cyanogen and am having issues. I am a total noob, fyi. The phone does not recognize my 1GB or 8GB SD card, and my computer wont recognize the phone. I do not have the sd card that the previous owner used so I have no recovery image or ROMs to flash. Can someone help?
Perhaps you have developer mode on.
I need you to go to Settings > Applications > Development
If you have USB debugging checked, uncheck it.
If it is not checked, then what I say is not you solution. As a last resort, you might consider grabbing a cheap card reader that you can insert your sd card into which connects to your computer via USB.
Thanks aeronex.
I tried that; no success. I was thinking the card reader may work, so i will try that. I didn't expect this when I bought the phone, but it seems that with android there is almost always a solution.
I';m betting someone who reads this will know.
When you say won't recognize, do you mean not even the Pop up in Windows that says a New Device and searching for drivers? Try downloading and installing PDANet for USB tethering to get the drivers.
As for the card under Settings>SD Card & phones storage settings is Unmounted Grayed out or in White Print?
The option is grey. It won't allow. I will try the pdanet drivers now
No luck with PDAnet. Windows 7 still say "Unrecognized device drivers not installed". I have downloaded SDK and tried to manually install the drivers as well; no success.
So to recap the option of mountign SD card is grey, not white. I have even booted into recovery but cannot mount SD card that way or format SD card that way.
Hi forum!
So I'm very pleased with my Infuse. I love everything about it, but I am having some issues when mounting the memory cards via USB.
I am on Mac OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard). After plugging in the USB cable and selecting "Connect to USB" or whatever the prompt is, the drives (internal and external memory) will mount onto my Mac, but shortly after, they'll disappear, which messes up file transfers, especially when I'm copying something like a new ROM. Does anyone have any advice on what I should do? I'm not using the original cable, but it's just standard Micro USB, so the cable shouldn't be the problem. Thanks!
I would first try another cable. reboot the phone and the Mac. if it persists, you may want to wipe. are you on a custom rom or stock? if on stock and you tried everything else, you can do a factory reset under privacy in settings. make sure that you transfer important data to your external card using myfiles or astro. when you factory reset, it kills everything. take the SD card out before reseting
Hi,
I just bought the Desire S and it comes with an 8GB SD card. When I plug my phone into the computer to browse the SD card, the SD card doesn't show up in My Computer. I've tried USB storage ON and OFF, debugging Mode and nothing works.
When I go to Computer Management -> Disk Management, the SD card shows up as "Unallocated". I cannot assign a drive letter to it as well.
I took the SD card out of the phone and plugged it into the computer using a card reader and it showed up in My Computer and was working fine. I put it back into the phone and plugged the phone to the computer and selected SD card storage option on the phone and I can't browse the SD card any more.
I've already formatted the card as FAT32 using Windows 7 before putting it into the phone.
I can browse the SD card just fine using a file explorer on the phone.
What could be the problem? why isn't the SD card showing up when I plug the phone into the computer?
I'm running MIUI 1.9.30 ROM, but the problem was also present with the original HTC ROM as well.
maybe you should try to format it through phone's settings, even better if you try to use a sense rom
Do you have htc usb drivers on your pc? Not sure if this they are required to browse the sdcard whilst in the phone, but they maybe?
The best you can do, you must format your SD card (all partitions) with your recovery (Ext3 or Ext4).
If you have used 4EXTRecovery or CWM, it's easier. (I prefer 4EXTRecovery )
At the end I think it will be ok

I downloaded the "HTC Sync" tool and installed it but it doesn't recognize the phone probably because MIUI is installed on the phone.
Does anyone else have MIUI installed and managed to get it to work? Or is there some USB drivers I need to install?

But Windows doesn't recognize Ext3 or Ext4, so I still won't be able to browse my SD card on the computer.

Indeed, except if you use Droid Explorer on your PC (you can read all partitions from your phone with).
Except your SD partition who's must be in Fat32, all the parttions must be in Ext3 or Ext4.
That's why I'm write that's you can format your Sd card with your recovery.
For exemple, mine is:
System => ext4 => capacity :549 MB => free: 101MB
data => ext4 => capacity :1156 MB => free: 427MB
cache => ext4 => capacity :142 MB => free: 138MB
sd ext => ext4 => capacity :0 MB MB => free: 0 MB
sdcard => fat32 => capacity :29543 MB => free: 15369MB
In my pc, the only partition that I can read is sdcard
I tried Droid Explorer but it is buggy, incomplete, very slow, and overall crap.
I tried RCMix3D 1.5 ROM with Sense 3.5 and Android 2.3.5, and still the SD card doesn't show up on the computer. I have HTC Sync installed, but it crashes when I plug the phone in.
The SD card is formatted as FAT32.
Is there anything else I can do to browse the SD card on my PC? What did you guys do to get your SD card to show up on the PC for the first time?
Thanks for your help.

Some daft questions:
Did the SD function fine ever, eg with stock ROM when you first got the phone?
Have you tried an alternate SD card in the same phone?
Have you tried a different USB lead?
Have you tried on a different PC?
Have you tried another USB cabel?
Swyped from my Desire S
[Solved]
I found out what the problem was. After having a look at My computer -> Properties -> Device Manager, I found that two of the USB Controllers were not working properly and the SD card was detected as an "Unknown Device".
I uninstalled HTC Sync, fast boot drivers, and anything related to Android or HTC from my computer.
I then uninstalled the USB controller drivers by right-clicking on each and selecting Uninstall, and the same for the "Unknown Device". After a restart Windows started scanning for drivers for these devices and they started working perfectly again.
The SD card now shows up in My Computer when I plug the phone in, without the help of any HTC drivers.
I hope that helps others who come across this problem. Thanks to everyone who tried to help me with this problem. I appreciate your help guys.
i had that too.... i formatted it wiht my desire hd and it worked
Great to hear that this is resolved.
Best to edit your opening post #1 (using Advanced edit) and prefix the title of the post with [SOLVED] so as to note it's resolved.
So i have just rooted and unlocked the phone. I am trying to put recovery on it, i put the update zip file on the root of the sd card manually by putting the sd card in my pc and transferring then tried installing it via the sammy recovery but it says no file found. When i connect via usb and select mass storage it shows the drive but when i click it, please insert removable disk.
Its a 4gb micro sd, i tried a 2gb as well
Don't confuse the SD card with the external SD card. What the file system shows as SD card is actually internal memory partitioned as a 16 gb "card" for our use. The file system shows the actual SD card that can be removed as "external_SD".

You need to start over on installing your drivers. Uninstall them from control panel, then go intoprogram files, find the folder labeled "Samsung"and delete it. Restart your computer. Now, reinstall your drivers. Make sure your USB cable is plugged into the back of your computer, not th he front. Let it go through the process of identifying your phone and installing the drivers.
i removed all the drivers but when i try to reinstall the sgh i897 drivers i get this error
samsung android usb modem driver was not installed successfully 16
Download kies, the full version not mini. After you install it, look under tools. There's an option to install drivers. Do that.
