I just bought thumb keyboard. but when i wanted to activate it, the device told me that the app can monitor all inputs like passwords and creditcard numbers.
well that scared me. do you use third party keyboard apps? do you also enter passwords and credit card numbers with them?

Nope, its better not to use 3rd party keyboards
They do as they say !
*HIT THANKS IF I HAVE HELPED YOU*
If the app is reputable (SwiftKey, Swype, etc.) then it's not even a second thought for me. I use SwiftKey and feel it's the best keyboard I've ever used on a mobile device (and that includes hardware keyboards).

This warning appears regardless of which third party keyboard you install. Many keyboards are only as good as they are at word prediction because they monitor every keystroke to learn your style. Swiftkey or Swype asks you to allow it to read you Twitter, Gmail, sms and Facebook posts. You can either allow this or cripple it's ability to function as it is intended.
I would not think twice about installing a keyboard from a reputable company like SwiftKey or Swype. However! . . .
Once you've used the new stock keyboard on Jelly Bean 4.2 (and 4.2.1) you won't even think about going anywhere else.
I usually only install 3rd party keyboards w/o any permissions. One prime example is a simplistic keyboard named Big Buttons Keyboard.....no permissions

I think the only reason they have to say they monitor passwords, etc is because most 3rd party keyboards "learn" what you type. I wouldn't worry about it.
The new stock keyboard is good but not even close to swype in my opinion. Too many taps to save a new word, not as accurate, weak predictions when even available, etc. But it is definitely the best stock android keyboard yet.

Swiftkey changed my opinions on typing on a touch-screen. I figure if they're courting the medical community, they'd better not do anything fishy or they'll have hell to pay from angry lawyers.
thumb keyboard thumbs up!
I've been using thumb keyboard on both my tf101 and my S2 for about a year now and I'm very happy with it... can be a little crowded on the S2 but maybe that's just my stumpy fingers! And yes I do internet banking on both devices, and make on-line purchases. The only complaint I have is the lack of graphical smilies standardized across the o.s. and available to all apps.

Just received an email with the Vlingo beta apk. I have not tried it yet but since this forum has helped me a ton, I figured I might be able to return the favor. Below are the instructions directly from the email:
Installing Vlingo for Android
1. Check the Unknown Sources item in Settings > Applications
This is required since Vlingo is not yet in the Android Market
Unknown apps screen
2. Open the Browser and browse to *********
NOTE: Please do not share this link with anyone else
3. When the file is finished downloading click on it and then click the Install button
4. Click the Open button when you see the Application Installed message
Add Vlingo to your Home Screen
1. Press and hold in an empty space on your home screen
2. Click Widgets (or sometimes it will be called Android Widgets)
Pick widget
3. Scroll down and click Vlingo
Add Vlingo to your keyboard
Speak anywhere you can type
1. Open Settings > Language & Keyboard
2. Check Vlingo Keyboard
Enable keyboard
3. Press and hold in any text box on your phone and click Input Method
4. Click on Vlingo Keyboard
Setup keyboard
5. You can now press the microphone icon (Speak button) to speak to any text box.
Known Issues
* Vlingo requires Android version 2.0 or higher to work
* While Vlingo should work on most Android 2.0+ devices, Vlingo has only been fully tested on the Google Nexus One and the Verizon Droid
Thanks!
This is a really great App. I really missed not having this when I switched over from the iphone.

Yeah, the default keyboard does do text to type, but Vlingo lets you open apps, call people and a lot more stuff. It is pretty cool.
The Vlingo voice recognition seems to work better and faster then the stock stuff.
What I really like is the voice search widget, it works really well. You can use commands like "find wal mart in Denver Colorado" and it will give you all the results on a map with details and you can call etc.
Works better then the other apps available IMO.

The voice search that's built into the navigator app does that as well. I can say "Navigate to Wal Mart", it brings me up a list of Wal Marts in the area, and fires up google navigation to guide me there. It's also location aware, so if I simply do a voice search on "Marriott", it brings up the google result for the nearest Marriott hotel to my current location.
Another cool little app is Choice Dialer. It's very good at voice dialing, but it also lets you do things like "Schedule an event for next Wednesday at 2 PM", or "Play music by Motley Crue"....
Definitely going to give this app a try. It'll take A LOT to get me to give up Swype as my regular keyboard.
Regardless of whether I end up using this particular app or not, with all the laws being passed about cell phone use while driving, voice recognition is no longer just a "neat toy", it's becoming a necessity. So I applaud anyone and everyone who is working to advance the state of the art in this field.
I have not been able to install it. They don't specify if there is an Android version requirement, which I am guessing there is. I am running 1.5.

+1 to that. I love Swype. Best app I have dled by far!
Finally got a chance to play around with this app this morning.
Observations so far... The keyboard seems pretty good, although I won't be replacing Swype with it. Voice accuracy seems solid. It doesn't handle "Navigate to" very well. If I say "Navigate to Wal Mart" it just brings up nearby wal marts in google maps. On the built in voice search, it fires up navigation and handles the request properly. Given that this is still a beta, it could be that they just haven't tweaked it to take advantage of Android's capabilities yet.
Seems about the same speed as google's voice search.
But now the deal breaker. I've been getting frequent "unable to connect to server" errors this morning. I've verified that my data connection is working fine. This may be a beta, but they have versions for other handsets that are in production, so the beta thing is no excuse for their servers being down.
All things considered, this seems like a solid effort, but I don't see where it brings very many advantages to the table in comparison to the built in voice search. And if their servers aren't reliable, I can't really justify putting it into daily use no matter how good it is.

That's odd. The widget's working fine for me.
In truth, it doesn't really add much. You can get nearly the same result by just putting the app icon on your home screen. The widget does eliminate one extra button press, but for some unknown reason they made it 4 spaces wide.
Not enough functionality to justify losing that much screen real estate, IMHO.
EDIT: Ah, you can set it to come up when you long press the search button. Accomplishes the same thing as the widget, and doesn't use up 4 spaces on your screen.
Ooh, another annoyance...
They use yahoo rather than google for searches. No place to change it in the settings.
Another observation...
Google's voice recognition cuts me off after a fairly short time. Vlingo has let me compose some pretty lengthy emails all at one shot, whereas creating the same message with the stock voice recognition required me to do it in 4 or 5 chunks.
This almost makes writing email on my phone easier than my desktop with the full sized keyboard.
Do you have to be using it as the keyboard, or can it be used as a stand alone talk to text, or for opening programs and what not?

Curious if you could explain where you got this information? The EULA posted on Nuance's website (http://www.nuancemobilelife.com/android/EULA-flext9.html) does clearly state that
"As part of the Service, Nuance also collects and uses Speech Data, as defined below, to tune, enhance and improve the speech recognition and other components of the Service, and other Nuance services and products... 'Speech Data' means the audio files, associated transcriptions and log files provided by you hereunder or generated in connection with the Service."

but as far as I can tell this is exactly the same thing Google does with Voice Search, Google Talk Voicemail, etc. They go on to explain that only Nuance and third parties directly under their supervision will have access to such data. Sounds like business as usual to me...
this is an amazing keyboard, beats skype in all aspects
Love this keyboard. I've used Swype for quite a long time and this is much, much better.
.....
I really like how I can easily switch between swiping and typing. Swype and other swiping keyboards don't do this nearly as well as Flex T9.
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
I picked up FlexT9 too.
I'm a swype user now and I really want to like it. I do think the keyboard layout itself is better than swype. Feels more responsive and it's definitely much easier to tap out words on it then it is on swype's.
Coming from swype though, I've have things that I'm used to, like swyping ! or ? to the space bar, Sywping the swype icon to 5 to get the numeric keypad and Swyping up after the first character to capitalize.
Those are pretty minor though. A couple of things I really don't like about FlexT9 though are that you can't click on a wrong word to pull up other choices for that word. You have to deleted it and re-swipe it. I think how, with swype, you can type away and then go back and quickly fix a few wrong words at the end like that. Also, I don't like how it won't let you swipe in the url bar. I use Dolphin and use the url bar to enter search queries more than I do urls. That's probably my biggest issue with FlexT9. I have to also get used to hitting space bar at different times from swype. I think if I swype something on swype and then the next I want a number after a space (like I want to write "this 1"), with swype it's swype "this" then hold "1". With FlexT9, you have to hit a space after swiping "this" That'll just take a little getting used to.
The last thing is that, like Swype, it automatically enters anything you type in manually into the dictionary. I hate that. I wind up with hmmm and grrrr in my dictionary. Then, let's say, for some reason, I can't get it to swipe a word and I have to type it and I mis-type it (very common on swype), I get that added. Like if I type out "thief", but I type "thied", then thied is forever in my dictionary. I clear data on swype monthly or so, but that's not a good solution. Why can't they both just add a check box for "automatically enter typed out words into the dictionary". Done, simple.
I've given up on FlexT9 and come back a couple of times. Not sure if I'll clear the hurdle to switch from swype.
Anyone have any idea how responsive they are to changes? I did receive an email back starting they'll review my suggestion. What kinds of things have been changed in recent updates?
@lexluthor: I pretty much have the same feelings with you on trying to like FlexT9 after using Swype. It's so hard to get used to swiping without inserting Swype's shortcuts. If only one of those keyboards would take the good qualities of the other... but might be a bit difficult as I think Swype figures things out location based along your swipe line; whereas FlexT9 takes a guess at your swiped letters and does a predictive dictionary match. That's why if you trace "ELEP" on FlexT9, you can get ELEPHANT as a word choice.
BTW, if you double tap on words with FlexT9, choices pop up. Don't know how you're not seeing it. This is with the version of FlexT9 from the Amazon free app day.
Does anyone know how to get this keyboard in Canada? I've wanted to try for a while but can't find it in android market and amazon app store isn't available here...
I paid for this a while back and haven't seen any updates for it for quite a while. It let me install the (now free) Australian version from the market, it still can't understand the Kiwi accent though
Edit: No, turns out it just hasn't been updated in months.

Says it was updated June 2nd. Nothing in the changelog though and from the comments it looks like the only thing that changed was the permission to read contact data... odd.
I still want to try this though, I've heard good things about this. It won't show up in the market app and if I try to install online it will say not supported in my country... so how to get it
EDIT:
Okay so apparently there is a free version available in Canada but it's in French.
Can anyone upload the free Australian version apk? (English is pretty much the same .. right?)
Thanks
Anyone have the Apk or not?
As a new Asus Transformer owner and first time Android Market customer I have to say that I am utterly disappointed with the current state of the Android Market. The android market ap is a joke. The website is a little better, but desperately needs a better way to filer aps by tablet/non-tablet or hd/sd aps.
There is no legitimate reason that the market couldn't have a specific section dedicated solely to tablets. Or at least better filter/sort functions that allow you to filter in a more effective way. I was going to post a list of what is bad about the marketplace, but there is just too much. I'm sure that everyone who owns a honeycomb tablet is well familiar with the problem(s) by now. Anyway, just wanted to vent. /rant
Use appbrain (google it), it's much nicer and lets you filter your search.

There actually sholdnt be a tabletsection at all. If a dev programs oroperly their app will work fine on any size screen. Thats the benefit of the way the xml layout in the sdk work. Locations all become relative. You say x is next to y andbelow z. Then let the device sort it out.

Not necessarily true, especially as Honeycomb introduces new layout elements that many app developers want to and should take advantage of to make their apps more tablet friendly. It might still all end up in the same APK in the end, but the developer still should do some tablet specific work to make it more user friendly. It would still be nice to know which APKs have been "tablet-optimized".
They do have a "Featured Tablet Apps" section, which as far as I can tell is just a list of all/most of the APKs that have been optimized for tablets.
I thought some of these issues were fixed with 3.1 according to xoom owners.
I think it's because they don't want people to see how few apps there are optimised for tablets.

I agree
There should be a tablet filter. Even amazon apps suck at it. I download some apps and it FC on me.
You say all apps should work on tablet? Well that's not the case for many apps so there should be some kind of distinction. But, I hear some problems will be fixed in 3.1.
The pop down add won't be popping down anymore, it will just be there when you open it up, more catagories, and when you view an app and go back, it suppose to remember your location.
Be nice to be able to add reviews, but I didn't hear anything about that.

No no no... there is nothing about an Android app that says "I'm a tablet app" unless it just happens to be written for _only_ the Gingerbread API level (and that will be false the second the next version of Android comes out) which is pretty bad practice.
Using 3.0 classes is possible via reflection while remaining compatible back to 1.6, given that you can have a specific layout for x-large screens you can use 3.0 layout elements there even if your app targets a lower API level. Fragments are available all the way back to 1.6 now.
There is no "Tablet version" switch to detect, nor should there be.
It is up to the devs themselves to support the use cases they want to target, not specific devices, with freedom comes responsibility.
there should't be a tablet filter..android is different from iOS in terms of the layout design and ideally all apps should just run just fine on hc.
I remember reading that Google were going to put extra layers/levels into the current market to provide better touch browse/navigation - which might be nice.
But I don't really have any problems with the current one and the other sites do a good job at simplifying searches anyway.
It will never please everybody, but will continue to get better I am sure.

It's not whether or not they run fine, it's whether or not they are optimized for a tablet, like the CNN app. So I agree, a filter for apps that are tablet-optimized is a must. Until then, I just rely on the Featured Tablet Apps to see if anything new has been added.

yes ideally they should, but theyre phone apps. When they do work correctly, they just stretch. Everybody makes of the ipad saying its a giant ipod touch, but the apps that are optimized for it look amazing. So yes there should be a tablet filter.
Hello,
I am looking for an app which allows you to designate which keyboard you want to use in which apps. Preferably it will default to the default keyboard then you can manually change the keyboard for certain apps.
For example, I would like to use swiftkey x when in messaging, whatsapp, and the browser, but use swype with everything else.
I know this should be possible as this app does show the ability to switch keyboards based on certain parameters: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=830177
If you know of any app please do share or if you can create this i am sure thousands of people would be very happy.
Thanks!
I too would like an app like that!

Wow just today I started thinking that an app like this would be extremely useful. I hope there actually is one, out of not at least someone here could write one. I'd gladly party for one if it works!
You can use Tasker to display the input method select popup when you load/exit certain apps (actually, the parameters can be nearly anything you can think of). Android does not allow apps to change the input method automatically. So you will still have to select the input method from the popup.

Hello. I was looking for something to do exactly this and found this thread. Since I cannot find anything to do this, I am writing an app that will do it. I have a somewhat hard-coded proof of concept app that does this right now. I only have a Samsung N7000 Note phone with ICS 4.0.4 on TouchWiz, so have only tested there. This will require root but should, I think, work on almost any device - there is nothing specific to my device. So I will be looking for early testers who have root and are able to let me know how things look. If interested, post here and PM your email to me so I can get you on the list. Cheers!

Hey, I'm running Jellybam 4.2.1 on an AT&T galaxy s3, I'd love to be a tester for you on the keyboard app. But just to make sure we are on the same page, the app you're making will "task" a specific app to use a user defined keyboard? Like, I want the samsung regular ol keyboard when using the messaging app, but I want Kii keyboard to be the default keyboard whenever Glowfly (sms pop up app) notifies me of a new message, Glowfly seems to have some weird tendencies, like when using the samsung keyboard, the return key only sends the text, does not "return" or move the cursor below the already typed text. but when i use kii keyboard with glowfly, the return will put the cursor below the text i already have (this is what i want), but when using kii keyboard in the messaging app (stock app) it will send the message rather than move the cursor below the input text. does this make sense?
Let me know if this is unclear or if you have anything you want tested on a device, thanks!

Install as a normal app in the normal way. But to operate fully, you MUST install as a system app. I recommend using this app here on the Play store. But other techniques will work as well. You must undo this prior to uninstalling or updating.
After using on your device in "free" mode, please consider purchasing the Pro Upgrade to unlock other features.
Please email me from the link on this page with questions, comments, or suggestions. I cannot respond to reviews left by users so that is not the best channel to reach me.
There are piles of keyboards/input methods out there for Android devices. But it stands to reason that some keyboards are much better for some tasks than others. Imagine a hypothetical app which never accepts alphabetic input. When running this app, you don't need a full QWERTY keyboard - something like a 10-key pad would be much more efficient. So you may find yourself regularly switching between keyboards whenever you use a certain app. But doing so in Android is something of a pain involving at least several steps each time.
Keyboard Master exists to save you this time and hassle! It permits your device to "remember" (called a mapping) that you want to use a specific keyboard each time you run a specific app. And when that app is started, Keyboard Master takes care of making the keyboard swap and then swapping back when the app is no longer being used.
Keyboard Master operates in a default (free) mode that permits you to establish a single mapping at a time so you can test how it works on your device. This single mapping may be adequate for some users and if so, please enjoy the app at no charge.
Users with more advanced needs will appreciate the Pro Upgrade which you can purchase within Keyboard Master (see the options menu). Purchasing this upgrade will enable the following additional features of Keyboard Master:
Removes the limit of only one app-to-keyboard mapping imposed in the free version of Keyboard Master. There will be no limit imposed.
Enables the optional, automatic capture of app-to-keyboard mappings as you change the selected input method while running an application. Of course, the manual creation of mappings found in the free version is still supported.
Enables the on-demand backup/loading of settings and mappings to/from your device's SD card.
It will also unlock other, advanced features that may be added in the future. I can envision future support for device orientation in mappings and special treatment when a hardware keyboard is in use, to name a few.
All of this power and convenience comes at a technical price. Not only does this app require ROOT, but it also must be installed as a "system" app (as opposed to a normal or downloaded app) because only a system app is permitted to swap keyboards in this way. So once you have downloaded Keyboard Master, you MUST move it to the location on your device where system apps reside. And it must be moved back prior to uninstall or update.
I want to thank the author of this app who's published code hinted at how Keyboard Master could accomplish all of this.

I am pleased I could help out. But I am confused. I don't think I have sent you my app (Keyboard Master) yet. Changing my app to a system app is needed but I would not recommend changing apps to system apps without really good cause. Keyboard Master needs this capability, but most apps should not benefit from this at all. If you do want to test Keyboard Master, PM me with your email address. Also, I will shortly be posting a video of Keyboard Master at work on my Samsung Note N7000 to YouTube. I will post that link here for those who are interested. Cheers!

You can now check out a video of my new Keyboard Master app in action on YouTube. Sorry for the spotty video quality. Cheers!

hahahahaha I misread some of your reply to me and when I quickly grabbed /system/appmover I converted some of my apps and forgot to come back to your post to finish reading everything and I confused your (keyboard master) for the Tasker mods I had already set for my keyboards because when I converted Tasker and the keyboard I wanted to use, everything became instantly responsive and it removed the problems I was having prior, thus leading me to imagine I had your app and things worked. Sorry about the mistake, I am still interested in trying out your app tho. I believe I had sent you a pm with my email. If not lemme know and I'll send it

Ah ha. I think I read somewhere that Tasker does have an addon (which also requires to be a system app) that will do some (perhaps all) of what my app does. If you are already a Tasker user (I am not), that may be the way to go. No sense in cluttering up your device with extra apps and complexity (and possibly incompatibilities).

Hahaha well looks like this accident turned into a good thing, I have removed Tasker to give your app a try, if it is the same turn out, I'll pm you about it. Maybe your app runs better/faster/lighter. Would be nice to find out, thank you for pointing out the possible clash with Tasker and Keyboard Master

And yes, Tasker uses SecureSettings to dive deeper into the phone directories to include input methods as tasks, so once both are made system apps, they run flawlessly. So in the short run, your recommendation of getting /system/app mover was the fix for my current issue.
Keyboard Master App Does This and is Ready!
You may be interested in my Keyboard Master app on the Play store. It does just what the OP requested. Cheers!
I just downloaded my first keyboard app from the PlayStore and went to install it, but then I got a warning message about a bunch of stuff that this keyboard is able to know what I'm typing, including credit card numbers, text messages and so on ...
I got ripped for $12,000 once a few years ago because I bought something online and someone got my credit card numbers. Bank investigation, blah blah blah, took ages before it was all sorted. Now I'm a bit paranoid about this sort of thing.
Is there another app maybe, or some setting that can stop a keyboard from recording what I type?
I know I could just go back and use the standard keyboard that came with my ROM, but now I'm sus on that too. Is this a common thing with Android, or all devices these days. Is it something to be worried about, or is that just how it is and its really nothing to worry about?
The keyboard I got from the Playstore is called Kii Keyboard. It seems popular with heaps of users, but still I thought I'd ask first.
Thx
I haven't had a lot of experience with different keyboard apps, just with SwiftKey. I think Google is trying to keep people aware when they install these keyboards of the risks of what "could" happen. If you are downloading a very popular app from a reputable source on the PlayStore, I would think that its chances of being safe are pretty high. Google is pretty good about taking down apps if they don't meet certain requirements. Thankfully I have never had any problems using SwiftKey, maybe try that one! Also, as far as if there is a setting to keep the keyboard from paying too much attention to what you type, I think that would be working against any features that help enhance the keyboards predictive text. I know with SwiftKeys, I love how much better my predictions have become over time. I'm not sure how possible that would have been with something working against it. Just a thought though!
Yeah I also had this attitude for trying new keyboards, because of the permissions they asked. But after someone told me that the standard keyboard uses the same permissions, I was willing to try it. In the end you could also edit the permissions of the app (if you're rooted), so that it's 'safer', but I think you'll miss out on some of the predictive text options.
