Of course you cant. After all, you would wouldn't expect someone to list an accessory in the nexus 4 accessories forum if you can actually use it, would you? Oh wait.......

I have one of these and love it. Especially useful with the modifications that allow full read/write over smb and automatic dropbox synchronization.

There is also this :
http://www.hypershop.com/iUSBport-p/iusb-black.htm
It can transform any USB drive into a network drive...

As a side note, any HDD or SSD in your PC can be wireless if you set up a Plex media server. It's easy to set up and all your media is available over your local WiFi. You can access your media remotely too just by forwarding one port on your router.

Was about to pick up the patriot gauntlet but then saw this on sale for the same price. With there Seagate you get a hard drive as well. The ability to use this as a wireless hard drive with internet pass through or as a regular 3.0 USB drive is awesome.

The Seagate goflex satellite only has a 10.36Wh battery and 128MB DDR. The Gauntlet note has a 12.4Wh battery and 64MB SDRAM.

True and thanks for that, but doesn't help if you want a mobile wifi drive (unless you're happy to leave your computer running all the time AND have a decent upload speed)

I got one of the T-Mobile 4g prepaid hotspots on Black Friday. It ended up being $10. The interesting thing is that it has a micro sd card so I'm hoping I can use it as a wireless drive without activating the data.

Any VNC/RDP apps?

Does anybody know of a remote client that actually works?
The only one I have found is impossible to use because the keyboard for entering address/id/pw is not even there to get started!
If I could get something like Pocket Cloud on here ... this thing would pay for itself.
I'm in the same boat as OP, I really need a windows rdp app for my touchpad
Ubuntu
I installed the ubuntu chroot on to the TouchPad. I then used the rdesktop application with tsclient frontend.
It actually works pretty well.
You even get a keyboard. No right click though..
This isn't out yet, but evidently it's getting close:

great news
Can't wait - I am already using their remote desktop HD on android .
apparently out today - I've just bought a copy. Requires the use of a desktop streamer tho, so might not be your cuppa tea. Haven't finished installing yet but the reviews so far are nearly all 5/5 stars
I picked it up this morning. I've only tried it over the Internet so far because my work machine is on a private network while my TouchPad is only allowed on the guest network at work. Performance is still decent, but I've heard that on a LAN it screams (e.g., streaming video/audio works well). I'll set that up with my home machines in a bit.
I've seen a few people complaining about paying $10 for it...good lord...most of us paid $100-150 for the tablet and this effectively turns it into a portable remote terminal for $10! I know mobile computing apps have kind of redefined what we perceive as "value" with $0.99 apps, but if you're looking for a remote desktop-type app and this one isn't worth $10 for you, I'm really not sure what to tell you...
agreed SCWells72 - when I upgraded from PCAnywhere 11 to 12 back in the day so I could get the mobile app for my iPAQ that was about a hundred bucks, so spending $10 (about 7 quid in the UK) is peanuts. You're right - this is the last piece I needed for webOS to tick all my boxes.
Not yet sure if SplashTop supports file transfer, but that would be a massive advantage if it does!
Do anyone find that splashtop streamer too much of a resource hog? Unlike rdp, my computer is really slow.
Anyone know about what happened to 2x client?
Would be great if there was a linux alternative

No file transfer and it does scream locally. I have tried it on my isp's public wifi (my cable company offers g wifi across its footprint to customers) and found it very usable. Though Chrome browser and the two finger scrolling is PITA.
Going away with the wife and have decided that between smartphone and the touchpad, it will be enough tech to carry.

[Q] Motorola Xoom for studies? no, yes?

Hello
I just orderd a Motorola Xoom 32GB 3G for 220€ and I was wondering if Motorola Xoom will work fine to complement for studies in example universety? What app's is then required that works fine for Xoom+studies? I understand that the Ipad is superior when it comes to handy apps for studies is there something likely for Xoom or should I cancel the order? Does any bluetooth keyboard+mouse work or is it only a few?
Let me hear your thoughts..
The Motorola BT keyboard and mouse work great, and I know that a number of others also do. There are lots of writing/note taking apps as well as apps that allow you to read and mark-up pdfs, etc.
It has a good wifi connection ability, and is very portable, as you know. You should update it to ICS as soon as possible.
a favorite or two
just quick... i am not currently a student but i am a teacher. i use Springpad a lot to take notes on projects and meetings and such. it is an essential for me. after that the essentials are thumbpad and an office program. I just saw a thread that looked like it would review the office apps. the only reason the ipad. is better is it got to the market first, it isn't actually better.

I'm using the Bluetooth Keyboard case and love it along with the logitech bluetooth mouse. But any bluetooth mouse will work.
And there are various programs you can use to do that. I like Quickoffice Pro personally.

Is Quickoffice Pro compatible with Microsoft's Word? If so then I dont thing i'll never find a greater laptop/netbook for the price of this Xoom with dualcore, camera etc.
Also is it neccesary to be a wirless bluetooth keyboard? regular wirless keyboard with usb-stick that goes in the usb-port in pc for example doesn't work in xoom?
Radio (RF) does it work with xoom?

Yeah Quickoffice pro is compatible, the only issue is that you might have to go back to word to do some final formatting (like the headers and such). Other than that it works great. I have all my schoolwork synced with Dropbox so I can edit it on the go with Quickoffice. It has built in support for Dropbox.
If you want to use a usb device you're going to have to order an micro-usb to usb OTG adapter. It doesn't have a full size usb port, which I'm sure you know.
I do not believe that radio works on the xoom...
My Xoom is great for what I do at school. I've had it for a semester so far, and I must say it's fantastic to just have to carry this around rather than a backpack full of stuff. With the Kindle app I can download most of my textbooks, and you can highlight and bookmark pages right in the app. Plus with the apps that support office documents (QuickOffice, DocumentstoGo, ThinkFree, and others) you can edit and even print (with compatible printers) papers and stuff. It's a great tool. I plan on buying a logitech keyboard/stand for mine for when I go back to school, that way it's easier to take notes in class.

I'll be able to test this soon. I've ordered an OTG cable from Amazon that should be here any day. I also have a couple of wireless devices so I'll let you know when I get it in.
One thing to be aware of is the increasing amount of homework that is done online now. You need very specific OS/software requirements to be able to do these online assignments. If the only computer you have is a xoom you will have to borrow a roommates PC or use a computer lab to do all your homework. Depending on your major there may also be software tools that you can only use on a PC. So just be prepared for that.

I currently use my Xoom for all of my online homework. The only issue it's given me is no keyboard pops up when in flash based content. But other than that it had been compatible with everything so far.
I do see where you're coming from as far as actual software goes. Just wanted to give a heads up saying that it works well for everything else.

I wasn't as fortunate. Every online homework program was different so I think it just comes down to luck. One application required me to open specific ports for communication, another only ran in explorer, ect. Just a real PITA. But like I said there is always a computer lab or a roommate where you can find a PC if you need one. If you live on campus its not an issue to get to a computer lab. I always lived off campus and did homework late at night after lab hours so I had a netbook that was portable and had 9 hours of battery, plus guaranteed compatibility with any required program. I was taking mostly science courses and document collaboration was necessary so using a tablet to make edits to a document would have been doable but not ideal. PowerPoint presentation would have been impossible on a tablet given the complex nature of the presentations. Like I say you just have to evaluate your specific needs.
I use my Xoom for graduate school class to take notes and for presentations at work. A cheap laptop is sometimes a better deal. I bought mine at launch and for that price it was a waste of money but if you can get one for less than 250 USD, it isn't a bad deal for that use.
Even with Office Suite Pro (I've also tried all the others,) the office like apps are lacking. You still need the desktop version of Word to do real work with it. It still loses some page formatting and references aren't robust enough yet. OneNote just doesn't seem to be happening. There is a program out there that sort of does it but we really need the attention that Microsoft gave iOS for the iPhone and iPad versions. The office emulators are worth waiting until Amazon is offering them for free. The development teams should charge more for the apps but integrate more features. It's cheap now, but it's hard to justify $10 when you have to go to the desktop anyway. You could have saved your money, used a free text editor and put the document on a desktop to finalize. Editing office docs is convenient but you still run the risk of losing things.
It still isn't that good for PowerPoint presentations. If you convert your slide show to PDF you get along a little better. The Xoom's screen is a lot nicer than what you'll be getting out of most projectors so you have to be careful. Plugging in through HDMI will not save it. This isn't the fault of the Xoom it's just what happens when you use cheap projectors. It's just more noticeable when you have nice visuals in your hands yet on the big screen it's a washed out mess for hundreds of people to see.
Just remember that this is a cheap stop gap measure until the technology catches up. If lightweight mobility in a device that you can use to organize your teaching work is the biggest priority, this isn't a bad option but if you really need the features and not a toy, you're better off with a cheap HP laptop. It can do everything you need even though it's a boat anchor.

Thanks for your reply's guys. I wont start university untill after the summer, hopefully I then will begin law school, if I am lucky I have a chance to go to an universety near my home and then having avablity of a PC will not be a problem.
I bought the Xoom for 325$ with motorolas dock, otg cable and folder case. It is the 32GB with 3G. Do you think that the apps for tablets will expand and we can have similar good apps like ipads?

Miracast HTPC via Software/Wifi Card?

For years I've run a very nice MythTV media server complete with multiseat linux, 5 hard drives, you get the idea. So the idea of buying an extra "dongle" like the ptv or other miracast adapters, while the price isn't bad at all on most of them, seems a bit silly when I've got a core i5 with 10gb of RAM running all the time as is.
Long story short, is there any way to duplicate functionality of these miracast devices in software, preferably on Linux? I realize I'll need a wifi adapter (currently using ethernet but don't mind adding a wifi adapter to give me the requisite wifi direct). I know I can do DLNA easily but I want true screen mirroring for HD videos. Also this would give me the advantage of being able to send said video to any/all 4 monitors/sound systems in my house that are attached to said server. Thanks!

recommendations under $100

Hey guys,
I'm looking at getting my first android stick pc.
I basically want to use it to browse the net, stream movies and episodes off my network (wifi),
I've looked at the MK809III and the CX919.
Is there any preference from these 2, or something better in this price range.
I need pretty decent WiFi strength as my router is a fair way away.
Any advice would be great.
The CX 919 has great reviews and it has also a WiFi antenna

hi waxtah,
if you tell me how you're going to mosty use the stick I can suggest you some of those.
eg, do you plan to use it mostly for media purpose?
do you plan to make a mini-server out of it?
this has ethernet built in (can't paste url right now, see pm)
also you pretty much can add an ethernet port to any stick which has usb support by using an usb-to-ethernet adapter,
I've used some of these and they work just well,
I'm using a CX-919 with an usb-to-ethernet adapter, basically I've made a full blown media/torrent server
jynjbox
i like my jynxbox android tv
The CX919 looks good so far. Has anyone compared the WiFi on this to the Tronsmart MK908? If it is similar then i may get that one as there seems to be more support/software available for it.
Also, with all the air mouse/remotes available, is there a decent recommended one that people commonly use? Not a super expensive one, but not a cheap nasty one either. I dont know if i want a keyboard one or not yet so if you could recommend a good one with and without keyboard, that would be great.
Thanks

basically i want watch movies. and maybe play games. I'm afraid wifi can not be stable for movies. Jesurun looks perfect and price very good. I think it good choice for me. Thank you.
I just got my cx919 yesterday. Fired it up and it was extremely fast. Tried netflix and dlna and playing xvid, mkv, off USB thumb drive . All played well with no hiccups. The only thing I did not care for was the stock ROM. So flashed bobs Finless JB 4.2...Was a bit of a pain to install drivers. BUT got it done and now rooted and no issues with apps from playstore. Have had no issues with wireless. I am going to refresh however as with Finless rom. You get choices on how large you want the partition for apps to be. I had a problem trying to choose the 4gb choice. So I got stuck with the 2gb partition. Yuck. But thats my fault. Overall this little device has handled everything well. I also got a cheap air mouse_kb to go with it. 23 bucks. Total for all was 103. Now. I made my purchase through Amazon. So to have a little peace of mind. Cost me 20 bucks more. But I felt more secure knowing I had some backup if something went wrong. That is purely my choice and opinion. Anyway I love this thing. BTW. Most games play well too. I still have to get a BT controller though. But I have not read of anyone complaining about BT on bobs ROM...at least.

[GUIDE] [POGOPLUG] List of Mods/Specs/Info/etc

This is a thread for general information regarding the modding, hacking, specifications, and general information of the Pogplug devices. The nice thing, is that many of the tutorials from the raspberry pi can also apply to the Pogoplug devices (when midified via SSH using Debian/ArchLinux). I will try to update and edit this post with new information as it becomes available. Here's a few nice links to start:

Pogoplug free account ends June 15, 2015
Hi,
My apologies if this was posted to the wrong section of the forum. Mods, pls move as appropriate...
On May 15, 2015 ; I received an email from Pogoplug indicating an end to the Free services.
I have 2 devices that is bundled with some free Pogoplug cloud storage:
1. The Pogoplug server device
2. Seagate FreeAgent Dockstar
What can I possibly do to hack these 2 devices so that I can un-chain myself from Pogoplug?
Pogoplug email May 15, 2015:
As of June 15, 2015, Pogoplug will no longer support free accounts. To make this process as seamless as possible, we’re offering our best deals ever to ensure that all of our users have unlimited storage and automatic backup for every device.
Upgrade to our unlimited service for as little as $1.92/month—a savings of 54%! Our plans are now just $29 for one year, $49 for two years or $69 for three years.

I bought a pogo plug device on clearance at Walmart for $10 and I hope I didn't throw away $10. I assumed I would be able to at least be able to make it a wifi sharing device on my network but don't see how right now.
I received same email. Spoke to pogoplug and they said your store bought pogoplug device will still work for free as long as you're using your hard drive and not their cloud service. That is no longer free of course.
what pogoplug boards have mini pcie and more
I hope to look at all the boards to see what one wil fit my application.
There is not much documentation and what exist behind the plastic case.
It looks like the pro model has mini pcie for wifi and a sata for internal hard drive.

The USB2 version of the V4 must have a free mini pcie bus onboard because it uses the same board as the USB3 version, and the USB3 is connected to pcie. And you can enable the sata bus on it with 4 caps.

Well with my devices being down and unable to connect for over a week I'm guessing what's left of PogoPlug is finally dead. I'll go back to the original post and start reading links/hacks. All I need it for is to act as a NAS for some USB HDD on my home network. I'd even be ok if that's it and no external remote access. Hopefully something will work.

If you bought one , don't connect it to the internet when u turn it on, it will disable SSH and you will not get access to it
I am currently working on some old hacks found on web and will post my progress soon
Some of them have been posted in the pogoplug searches.
I have ordered a USB to serial port adapter to connect to the pins inside to get access via a terminal window.
I am also building a USB boot thumb drive install of Linux via some of the methods .
All the pogoplug website responses are automated, and my device won't connect via their web page interface.
Router shows packets sent via port 80 and 2 others.
Not a good idea having a company access your hardware on your internet network.
This device is a nice little 4 core 1 gb ram system on a chip. With lots of features.
Pogoplug.com/opensource has all the software sources.
And there is a Debian port hard to find on a couple web pages.
One of my links on my device is here
The Seagate device is essentially a branded pogoplug
