I recently got a microusb to usb female cable and was playing around with it on my s3. I wanted to see if the s3 could power a laptop cooling fan (Im a curious guy) and plugged in the usb cooling pad. The pad worked to my surprise but it suddenly shut off. I look at the s3 and the s3 is off too. I try turning it back on but that didnt work. I try taking the battery out and then turning it on but that didnt work. I plugged it into a charger and tried turning it on but that didnt work either. I even tried booting it into download mode and that didnt work. I have tried almost every troubleshooting method including trying a different battery and that did not work either. My phone is rotoed with CM10 on it and I need to send it back to verizon once I get my replacement. Is there a way to reset the internal sd card even when the phone wont turn on? Will verizon even find out if the phone is rooted if it wont turn on? Has anyone ever sent in a rooted phone to verizon once they got a replacement and been ok? Your help, thoughts, and any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. (As calm as I may sound i am freaking the crap out right now).
My first tip is to stop posting the same question. It's been answered in your previous threads. Just like droidstyle said they won't know if it's rooted unless you tell them. As far add testing the internal memory, there is no way since it won't turn on.

The port on my phone has stopped working. My phone will not recognize that a cable is plugged in at all. Whether it is a cable plugged in thru ac adapter or computer or car charger. I have tried 2 diff cables thats all i have to test. Thing is I am on refuse and have no way to get back to stock since phone doesnt recognize that a cable is connected. I have tried rebooting, battery pulls. any ideas or suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

If even ODIN mode is not working you have a hardware failure.
Ok not sure wtf happened but will give yall the run down.
BTW thanks for the reply Entropy512
OK could no longer charge or connect to comp so no going stock for me so what was i to do my phone was fubar.
Ok after talking with all the devs and tech support and general folks in the irc that were available I deleted the system folder thru file expert. If cant boot they cant tell that i had rooted and put a rom on there right.
So jump in truck and for grins plug it in to charger and bam get the samsung logo. But i continue to ATT just in case a fluke. Well of course im bricked at this point. They try charge it, put new batt in (not sure if they left it in). Still wont boot (of course) I go thru the dance and of course they cant get it to work. So I have to go thru warranty. They sending me another phone and they give mine to send back once i get the other.
So get back in truck throw my external sd back in and throw on charger for grins again. Bam I get charge screen. I leave there for good hour. Get my baby home run to comp throw it recognized crank up Odin, go stock, and am in process of flashing it back to the way it should be.
Got replacement phone and sent the other one back it never was right always thought it was connected to comp after it finally connected again. And never another word from att.
Not to revive an old thread, but what happened that got it to work in the truck again? I am helping a friend with your exact same issue, and another thread led me here. His port feels like broken solder connections, and the problem got worse and worse, till now it's pretty useless. He's already got his replacement device, but we're kinda scrambling what to do with the old one before sending it back.
He is bone stock rom, stock recovery, etc so the ONLY problem is that pesky Super User Icon lol. Think he'll be alright?
Not sure what got it to work tbh. It just started working. Of course all it would do is charge cuz i had deleted system folder. But it would not boot so of course att rep couldnt get it to boot so said i would have to wait on replacement phone. So just limped it along till it showed up. Sorry that doesnt help u any but. Only thing i can suggest is to delete system folder or brick it to point it stuck at samsung logo. If bricked cant see super user. Thats how sent mine back. Sorry if not much help.
Same. I have a captivate and my Micro USB won't charge.
Hi there,
My Nexus S (i9023) phone recently fell into a water bucket and I immediately pulled it out.
Not much damage was done to it except of one thing: after I put it in a bag of rice like stated on the internet for overnight, and then plugged it in again to the charger, it seems like something was different.
When I plug the phone to the AC power - phone DOES charge, but nothing else happens.
It doesn't turn on screen and informs "charging", and doesn't have the "charge when phone is off" option anymore. Instead it would just turn the phone on.
Also, when connecting the phone to the computer nothing happens, it's just charging the phone! can't mount USB anymore
I took the phone to a lab which handles these cases. They replaced the USB port and cleaned all the corrosion. They said it's fixed now, and indeed the USB port is new.
But then after coming back home it's still the same.
I'm sick of being dependant on other people and would like to fix it myself.
Any clue which part of my phone was fried? Where can I get it?
Thanks!
-zeek
Are u rooted?
Try a different ROM. Maybe one ur ur backups.
If it still does connect then it has to be the ROM assuming ur computer has the proper drivers still.
Good luck
Vs Nexus S 4G
Thanks!
Thank you!!!
Problem solved after I loaded one of my backups.
Any explanation to that? even when the phone was turned off it couldn't charge it in off mode and now it can.
How come it's a software issue?
Thanks!
I can only guess that ur ROMs kernel had a "fast charge" option. If so this doesn't allow computer connection. How it got switched to that option... who knows .... maybe the sudden power surge.
If not that, then ... strange things happen when a phone get wet.. the sudden power surge could have changed the power output causing CPU adjustments... who knows.
I'm just happy it worked for u.
I'd recalibrate ur battery asap.
Good luck
Vs Nexus S 4G
Hi, the same thing happened to me, only it wasn't a bucket, it was a pool, and changing the ROM didn't work (I've flashed at least three different ROMs since then, kind of hard when the USB port doesn't work but eh, what can you do).
Also, it's on a Gio, not a Nexus S, but the principle should still be the same, yes?

When you put it in the charger, did you give it at least 5 minutes to get a charge? Put it back in the charger and wait a little bit.
I just plugged it in for a few minutes and the phones just seems to get hot and still refuses to turn on
I wonder if the cooling fan tried taking too much power from the S3...
You may have fried the S3 battery or something.
Just a guess

Do you know someone else with an S3 that you could borrow a battery from? I would also think you may have damaged the battery and that would be the quickest way to test for that.
Are you getting any kind of vibration feedback when trying to power it on? I had a similar issue when I used an under powered usb charger. It drained it to the point it wouldnt even boot up and got hot. however, I did have to let charge normally for quite a while. good luck
Pull the battery then put it back in. Ley it charge for an hour. Then try going into recovery. Mine wouldn't turn on one day ( I wasn't doing any experimental stuff though) but that's what fort me running. Once I was on recovery I just selected reboot system and it fired right up.

I tried using a different battery. Still didnt work
I got verizon to send me a replacement device but would they figure out the device is rooted? The phone is completely dead and does not turn on even with a different battery. Anyone ever send in a rooted device to verizon?
Phone was working fine this morning, screen flashed and phone vibrated, I went to unlock it, nothing. Tried to power it on, thinking it had powered off, nothing. No response at all. I had just plugged in a MicroUSB to USB adapter with a USB flash drive plugged in when this happened.
No boot to recovery, no boot to download mode. No charging light when plugged into wall or laptop.
Any help?
If I return it to my local store, and ask for a replacement exchange, what are the chances of them finding out it's rooted? If I can't turn it on, can they?

Verizon doesnt give replacement phones in store unless its under 14 days old. You just need to call them and they will next day air a replacement. As for the phone when you plug it in does it show a led light or the battery icon on the screen? Also was the battery extremely low when it went off?
Wasn't aware of that, thanks. This was my first phone to have an issue...
When I plug it in, there is no light. No reaction of any kind. The battery was ~90%, I had taken it off the charger and made a call or two.
P.S. Any chance a USB Jig would be able to get my phone into download mode? Once there, I would have no problem getting to stock and starting from scratch...

TWRP, but I can't get it to boot at all.
does it vibrate?
Last resort would be something called heimdall or something like that. I don't know if it will work but supposedly on older samsung phones it is the ultimate last resort even when odin doesn't work. Just google it and try to find some info.
Doesn't vibrate. Isn't heimdall for Mac?
Just downloaded and ran Heimdall, no recognition of my phone with stock cord or after market cord.
Edit: I guess at this point I just want to make know if there is any way for Verizon to find out my phone is rooted, and the exact process of getting it replaced?
Heimdall wont do anything for you since it connects to the phone the same way odin does, and you still have to be in download mode. If it doesnt vibrate or react in anyway when pluggin it in then its safe to say its dead. You should be safe switching it out as a dead phone with verizon too. You should call them early in the day so the phone will get sent out that day too, if they dont offer to next day air it then tell them you need the phone asap and they will free of charge (you may just need to tell them you need it and you lost all ur data, ect and they will help you out). Sometimes they will say you will receive it in 2-3 days free of charge, which is unacceptable.
Alright, I'm guessing I just ship mine back to them in the same box or...?
Thanks for the help, too.

Ya you will get a replacement phone with no back cover, you keep your sim card and back cover. There will be a shipping label for the return shipping which you can either drop off at a fedex or usps location. You have 5 days to return the bad phone from the day you get the replacement. They will explain everything to you on the phone.
Alright, so I'm really nervous about making this call. If I send it in, and they get it working enough to run their tests, and it comes up rooted, I don't have the money to pay for the phone at full retail price. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do? I know a lot of people brick their phones by misfollowing instructions, or flashing things they shouldn't be, but I did neither of which. The phone just shut down, and won't turn back on.
Sending the phone to a 3rd party service is also not possible for me, at this time.
Edit: Just found this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1981582), which sounds almost exactly like what happened to mine. So I guess my chances should be good of getting a replacement, without any troubles. I tried to find other threads involving people who sent in bricked phone to find their experiences, but I didn't know quite what to search for..
I wanted to factory reset my phone as one of my friends needs it for a few weeks/months,
phone shut down, went into twrp, shut down again and now its completely dead.
No way to get any signs from it, I dont get any response from my screen when plugged in to charge and the LED does not light up either.
Plug in wall wont work, PC connection wont work, Powerbank not working and wireless charging doesnt get any repsonse either.
Its just straight up dead, if there is nothing I can do then oh well its my old phone anyways, would still be grateful for any help tho as my friend is in a hard situation rn.
Ty in advance to everyone trying to help.

two ideas come to mind, 1: a jig and 2: debrick image
jigs should still be a very viable option for situations like these, however might be fruitless and i cant remember if this phone has an expandable memory slot or not. I know they ditched a few things on the S6 that were like VGN "what were they thinking???" but cant recall if that was one of them
