[Q] what, and how to, change a MyTablet to - General Questions and Answers

Hi Everyone! Yes, I'm a NOOB, I've never done anything on the developer side of things.
For Father's Day my wife bought me the MyTablet which has ended up to be a bit of a scam...1ghz processor, I have 16gb of memory with another 16gb card in it.
Info on my tablet:
Model Number: A10_MID
Android Version: 4.0.3
Baseband version: 4.0.11
Kernel Version: 3.0.8+ ([email protected] #8)
Build Number: crane_q7-eng 4.0.3 IML74K 2020520525 test-keys
System update feature indicates it is up to date.
Anyway, I've had some issues, it seems the company was really a 1 man shop that has disappeared, doesn't
respond to phone calls or emails, etc. Several of the apps I have such as the music player it came with doesn't
keep my playlists, and lately the thing has been shutting down at 64-71% power on the battery. So, I'm thinking
it's either faulty hardware or faulty software. That's not to mention that many apps on the google store said my device
was not compatible with it.
Since I can't do anything about the faulty hardware part at this point (the 2 year warranty was apparently a waste of money)
I thought of wiping the entire thing and starting out fresh with a new O/S. Any suggestions? I was thinking of attempting to turn this into a Nexus 7 type tablet which means installing Jelly Bean, preferably 4.2. I'm not sure how to go about this, but I've been looking around the forums and see there are lots of ROMs out there or maybe it's a Port I'd need. Would you guys recommend going the way of the Nexus 7 or perhaps a different android incarnation?
The Black Rose one found in these forums seemed interesting.
I found these forums and a way to wipe my tablet and add another in this article on techradar.com about how to install android on other devices
but I want to make sure I get something good and can do it correctly.
Boils down to these questions,
1.) Which O/S would you recommend for the tablet?
2.) Which files and/or file types should I download?
Thanks in advance!

Several general yet specific questions I need help with

Hey guys, I've got a few general questions about my Android phone, the Motorola Atrix. I've had it for about 3 weeks now, and there are a few things I'd like to more fully understand. I'm an electronics tech for a company that makes RC vehicles, and would like to get these 2 merged together at some point, but more on that later
Currently I keep running in to all kinds of "gotchas!" with this phone, and have cursed it plenty of times. I usually find a workaround, but some things are still not to my liking, and I am pretty sure it can be done.
Let me start off saying this phone is not rooted or anything, but thats only because I have not gotten a straight answer from anyone on how to do it, since I have the newest version of the OS. I really cant afford to brick it beyond my own repair. Here are the software versions:
System Version:4.5.91.MB860.ATT.en.US
Model Number: MB860
Android Version: 2.3.4
Baseband Version: N_01.77.30P
Webtop Version: WT-1.2.0-110
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9-00001-g41bc3e0
Build Number: 4.5.91
So I guess first off, anyone know how to go about rooting this bad boy? Its my understanding that rooting enables you to have full access to the OS, including, but not limited to, uninstalling all the junk apps that come from the factory/ATT. One of my biggest gripes so far!
Next, I would like to be able to access the Webtop feature via the HDMI cable. Not because I am too cheap to buy the Motorola one, but because I want to make a custom one. I know its been done, and I have seen plenty of threads on how to do it, but its my understanding that I cant do it with this version of the OS. What might be even easier is does anyone know what makes the phone distinguish between the included HDMI cable, home, and car dock? I'm betting its something as simple as a resistor.
Stemming from the above, does anyone know if it is possible to connect another touch screen device to the phone wired or wirelessly and control the phone that way?
Does anyone know where to find a complete spec sheet for this phone, including all the hardware (gyro meter, accelerometer, etc).
A couple other questions I'm just going to throw in this thread instead of making a new one are:
1. Can someone point me in the direction about how to write apps for the Android OS.
2. Does anyone know if Motorola or Google accepts formal reports on their devices from regular users, and how do you get associated with that?
3. After rooting my phone (assuming its even possible), are there other custom versions of OS out there?
Thanks in advance guys, I'm sure I'll be around for a while. I'd like to know this thing in and out so I can really see what its capable of.

Welcome to the club!!
Well... it seems am not alone...
I have open the poor tablet open to see if I could identify it better plus I had install "Android System Info" to it and so far I got this:
Android version 2.3.3 (mine is not so stable, get constant freeze here and there...)
CPU is a "tcc8900" according to Android System Info, even though I opened it and it read is label "tcc8902"...

Will keep on searching to see what can be done with this... wished I could just install Linux to it ... sad to see so much hardware damn to the trash can.
By the way... this hardware seems similar to an other junk I got, the Augen Gentbook 108... why, why do I find this things so useless with Android?!? Well I got to learn the droid and see what I can do with it...

[Q] Chinese tablet Wifi Problem

Hello XDA Community
Before I start, I'd like to mention that I've thoroughly searched the forums for an answer and got no luck.
I recently bought a chinese tablet from ebay of model number IRULU- AL101 and it was working fine until i'd decided to use pimp my rom app from the playstore and it was a doddle and worked great as the system had come rooted and open from the box. The play store stopped responding and nothing the the tablet would work, it would turn on, but not let me run any programs. Id also downloaded the pimp my rom 'recovery tool zip file' but I soon realized i couldn't flash it as once i booted into recovery, It worked fine but I couldn't actually use the controls to change the recovery options as the only button that worked was the power button which was highlighting the 'restart phone' which rendered the whole recovery utility useless.
Upon contacting the website owners from ebay, they said I should re flash using the phoenix burning tool onto my TF Card the software I'd downloaded from their website (it was the correct one, yes), which I did and it flashed fine. However after i restarted the tablet, I found that the WIFI wasn't working (It just says turning WIFI on and stays there) and after some further research I found out that this maybe due to a faulty kernal or wifi setting file of some sort.
My entire previous android rooting experience is when i used XDA Developers to help S-off and root my HTC Desire and wildfire phones, but I'm still a rookie at these matters so please go easy on me.
The information I can gather from my tablet is as follows:
Model- IRULU- AL101
Android Version- 4.0.4
Basebrand Version- 1.5rc4
Kernal Version- 3.0.8+
[email protected] #50
Mon Nov 5 09:51:29 CST 2012
Build Number- crane_al101-eng 4.0.4 IMM76D 20121113 test-keys
I can provide more information if it is needed and you can direct me on how to get it for you.
It contains ethernet internet connectivity but it is an absolute hassle and massive pain to use it as i means me sitting in a dark cold room really awkwardly with my router. Internet DOES WORK but only with ethernet, but the WIFI DOESNT WORK and I often use it in college while tethering to my phones internet through WIFI.
Please could someone help me out and advise me how I can fix the WIFI?:fingers-crossed:
Thank you- Fahad
bump
A solution...sorta
I have the same Al101 tablet and problem, Fahad. As you found, the software IRULU provides leaves WIFI disabled.
Researching the problem I found the tablet is sold under many names, so I opened the case to get the real story. Here's what I found:
The board: i85.photobucket.com/albums/k76/kdhaley/BC1003BOARD.jpg
The CPU: i85.photobucket.com/albums/k76/kdhaley/BC1003CPU.jpg
The board is a Yones TopTech BC1003 with an Allwinner A10 CPU. It is marketed here: yonesnav.com/products/bc1003.php
After hours of learning and searching I downloaded the LiveSuit installer from topnotchtablets.com/LivesuiteInstall and the ROM from d-h.st/fho and flashed my tablet using the instructions at slatedroid.com/topic/36789-livesuite-guide-allwinner-a1x/.
It's not perfect; WIFI works but GPS doesn't, so I'm going to tinker with it to see if I can get everything right. These look like promising candidates:
old.androidfilehost.com/main/Allwinner_A10_Developers/christiantroy/aokp/ (Ice Cream Sandwich - that's what we've got now)
slatedroid.com/topic/57538-rom-aokp-jelly-bean-android-412-allwinner-a10/ (Jelly Bean! will it work?)
Good luck, Fahad.

Hey Supercereal,
Thank you very very much for this information, I've been tryiing to get them to exchange the faulty tablet but at over 70 pound shipping and postage costs to me, Its much less of a hassle just to Save up a little more and invest in a decent tablet!
Thanks again for the detailed help, I will be using these very promptly and seeing if they work any better. However when people say 'connect your tablet to your PC', how exactly do i go about doing this? Could you describe the sort of cable I would need or maybe i just need to flash a TF card with the firmware image and turn on the tablet again like mentioned in the original tablet's instructions? Please could you link to an article or briefly explain this? Also, could you check for me if the sensors are also functional or not? I would really like to play the game Temple run 2 on mt tablet, but ven it if doesnt work, any decent stable roms will have to do
RSVP
Thanks, Fahad

Sadly, the sensors are NOT functional with any firmware I've tried, even the stock firwmare recommended by the company. I'm thinking there is a critical bit of information missing from the installation procedure. I wouldn't blame you for giving up and buying a better tablet; I'm thinking the same, but I'll keep fussing with it and let you know if I make any progress. The learning curve is a challenge.
The cable mentioned is a basic UBS cable such as this: amazon.co.uk/USB-Male-2m-Cable-Black/dp/B0018I97M0.
I have had better success with the cable method versus the TF card.
Good luck!
I've found a ROM that works at docs.google.com/folder/d/0B_88d7OJP9HPWWEwejlSQkQ0X2s/edit. Everything seems to work except GPS.

[Q] Trouble rooting generic Android phone

Hi,
I recently purchased a generic brand Android phone. General specs are; Android 4.1.1, Dual Core 1GHz, RAM 256MB.
I'm brand new to the smartphone thing, and Android 4.1.1 on a generic device isn't helping my experience. Lots of 3rd party apps have been factory installed on it to the point of choking the RAM and making it nearly impossible to run more than 1-2 apps simultaneously.
I need to root this phone, like, badly.
I searched XDA Forums diligently and tried several suggestions, but nothing worked. I searched plenty of other forums too, but haven't received any kind of satisfactory solution.
The saddest thing is, this phone doesn't seem to have a Recovery option. I've pressed and held the Vol - and Power buttons together, nothing. I've pressed both Volume + and - and the Power buttons together, nothing. I've pressed all 3 buttons plus the Menu button, nothing. I even tried begging it. Nothing.
This phone doesn't have any USB drivers, so that I can use an Android SDK and the SuperUser app to root it.
I'm crazed beyond the point of recovery, because I seem to have purchased an Android that can't do anything it's meant to do.
This is the device description on the company's website;
gphonebd.com/index.php?action=product_details&no=114
Some internal hardware and software details;
Phone Name: G'phone
Model Number: D16-Eye
Android Version: 4.1.1
Baseband Version: MTK6517 (Dual Core)
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7 [email protected] #3
Software Version: G'phone-D16-Eye_D8_V1.2-20130424
Hardware Version: 1.1.0
Please help in finding a solution, anybody! :crying:
Thanks in advance, to whoever responds.....
Have you tried framaroot? I honestly don't think it'll work, but it's worth a shot.
Worse case, it'll tell you none of the exploits work, so you'll have to uninstall.

Thanks for your reply. Since posting my original thread, my phone has now gone on the blink. I connected my phone to my laptop via USB to transfer some photos and BANG! The screen goes white and shuts down. I tried rebooting, but the OS isn't loading anymore. I tried Recovery Mode, but it seems there isn't any recovery software installed in this thing.
I'm desperately searching for a solution to this, now......

YOu are gonna be hard pressed to find anything, and to be honest your gonna have trouble no matter what you do. Your device doesnt even meet the min requirments to run android. So it will lag and be barely usable.

Yeah, I know. But believe me, I've seen phones with much lower specs, RAM, Clock speed and so forth, comfortably run Android 2.3.6 (Gingerbread). I guess the manufacturers of this phone shouldn't have put Jelly Bean on a device with these specs. I tried searching on the Forums here if there were minimum hardware requirements to run Jelly Bean, but haven't found anything informative enough.
Can you tell me, if you know, the minimum hardware requirements to run Jelly Bean 4.1.1? It would be a big help and guide for me, because I plan to replace the phone I currently own. I'll have to get it replaced from the dealers first (it's still under the device warranty) and once that's done, I'll put it up for sale. Then, I'll probably hunt around for a better phone. That's why it'd be a big help if you could give me a guide on minimum hardware requirements to run Jelly Bean.
Also, if it's not much trouble, could you tell me which would be better to run, Android 4.1.1 or Windows Phone 8? I mean, if you consider everything, such as prices, device range, apps, usability and durability.
Thanks so much for responding to my questions!
For the most part it is ok but if you search google for the requirments you will see that anything above GB needs a min of 512 mb of ram and then it still lags all over the place.
I am a developer at heart so Android is my choice but with all things considered I would look at windows phone. It is a good set of devices and is very easy to use.

Thanks so much for the reply! I guess for a smartphone noob like me, I'm probably much better off using Windows Phone. Android is way too complicated for me, I guess....
One final question, please. D'you think I should go for a Lumia device or one of those HTC's running Windows Phone 8? Is there one or two that you can recommend? Thanks again!

I heard the Lumia is a good device but IF i was to get a WP I would get an HTC as they have proven themselves to me over the years. I really cant say which one is better as I have never looked at a WP device.

[Completed] [Q] HTC One S - No radio, unmounted SD card

Hey,
I traded a bunch of old laptop parts and got this phone in exchange: an HTC One S. I think some call it a Ville. Nice looking phone.
Anyways, when I made the trade, I didn't notice that there was no icon in the status bar to show it was receiving any kind of cell signal. Really bright and sunny day washed the screen out. Jumped in my car, where it was a little darker, and discovered that the phone had a custom ROM (Or is it RUU?) installed. No biggie. Actually, it ran really smooth and kinda looked cool. It was a Cyanogenmod Mod, called Dark Jelly S edition. My thought was that I could use it as a backup phone, so I went to a local place to get an unlock to use on my network (it was, supposedly, on Fido. I'm on Koodo).
So, I tried to get the IMEI # off of it. No dice. Tried *#06# and I got a blank line. Went into settings, and settings crashed. When I got to the place I get my unlocking done, the guy at the desk knew that if you took off the back cover, there it was! Buddy got my code, but when I put my sim in, nothing. No way to enter the code.
Now, I'm no phone expert, but I knew something was terribly wrong. I have played around a little with smart phones, and even rooted one (well, partially at least), but I did some research, mostly here, and found that this appears to be a rather troublesome phone to mod. to make matters worse, I found out how to get into the bootloader and I fear I have done more harm than good. Not sure what I did, but then the SD card (which, of course, there really isn't one) became unmounted.
What I need, is a step by step process on what I can do, if anything, to make this phone work again. Now I know there are already threads like this on here, but they assume that the people they are helping have dev backgrounds. I do not. I get lost in all the jargon. I follow for a bit and then I get ROM and RUU all mixed up and have no idea what facepalm is or why you want S-off. It needs to be in plain english, or at least as plain a language as the terminology permits. I'm sure I'm not the only one on the planet suffering a similar fate and wondering what the heck to do.
Here is what I know:
Model - PJ40110
Kernel version - 3.0.71-gdde6c1e-dirty

CPU - ARMv& Processor rev 4 (v71)
Android version - 4.1.2
CyanogenMod version - 10-20130430-UNOFFICIAL-ville
Build version - Dark-Jelly-S-Edition -(Build-31)

Build # - cm_ville-userdebug 4.1.2 JZO54K eng.
xxmrhyde.20130501.001850 test-keys
Having been rooted and modded, I can access a lot, provided that doesn't happen to be one of the areas that crashes. If you need more info, tell me where to look and exactly what to look for. I'm really that much of a noob. All I really want is for it to work, whether that means taking it back to stock or another mod that actually works. Please help!
Hi, thank you for using XDA Assist. The purpose of XDA Assist is to point you in the right direction. I'm going to give you some links which hopefully will solve your problem. You're going to have to do the homework. Not having an IMEI is going to be your biggest problem but the first thing to do is get the device back to stock.
