Several general yet specific questions I need help with - General Questions and Answers

Hey guys, I've got a few general questions about my Android phone, the Motorola Atrix. I've had it for about 3 weeks now, and there are a few things I'd like to more fully understand. I'm an electronics tech for a company that makes RC vehicles, and would like to get these 2 merged together at some point, but more on that later
Currently I keep running in to all kinds of "gotchas!" with this phone, and have cursed it plenty of times. I usually find a workaround, but some things are still not to my liking, and I am pretty sure it can be done.
Let me start off saying this phone is not rooted or anything, but thats only because I have not gotten a straight answer from anyone on how to do it, since I have the newest version of the OS. I really cant afford to brick it beyond my own repair. Here are the software versions:
System Version:4.5.91.MB860.ATT.en.US
Model Number: MB860
Android Version: 2.3.4
Baseband Version: N_01.77.30P
Webtop Version: WT-1.2.0-110
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9-00001-g41bc3e0
Build Number: 4.5.91
So I guess first off, anyone know how to go about rooting this bad boy? Its my understanding that rooting enables you to have full access to the OS, including, but not limited to, uninstalling all the junk apps that come from the factory/ATT. One of my biggest gripes so far!
Next, I would like to be able to access the Webtop feature via the HDMI cable. Not because I am too cheap to buy the Motorola one, but because I want to make a custom one. I know its been done, and I have seen plenty of threads on how to do it, but its my understanding that I cant do it with this version of the OS. What might be even easier is does anyone know what makes the phone distinguish between the included HDMI cable, home, and car dock? I'm betting its something as simple as a resistor.
Stemming from the above, does anyone know if it is possible to connect another touch screen device to the phone wired or wirelessly and control the phone that way?
Does anyone know where to find a complete spec sheet for this phone, including all the hardware (gyro meter, accelerometer, etc).
A couple other questions I'm just going to throw in this thread instead of making a new one are:
1. Can someone point me in the direction about how to write apps for the Android OS.
2. Does anyone know if Motorola or Google accepts formal reports on their devices from regular users, and how do you get associated with that?
3. After rooting my phone (assuming its even possible), are there other custom versions of OS out there?
Thanks in advance guys, I'm sure I'll be around for a while. I'd like to know this thing in and out so I can really see what its capable of.

What is this?

Ok, prior to buying my Gtablet, I researched the many android options to an extreme, even checking Chinese wholesale places. Well, I happened to bookmark one of them, and today, I was curious to see if they had anything new and I found this:
http://www.ankaka.com/honeytab-h3-a...l-core-cpu-1080p-hdmi-output-wifi_p48068.html
It's called Honeytab, and is an android 3.0 tablet, with identical hardware ot what we have, regarding Nvidea. the description says that the camera is not functioning with the current Rom, and that Opera is required for flash video on browsers. So, it sounds like they are also running a port of honeycomb, just like some of us are. The question is? Where did they get their port? They mention that buyers can contact them at a later date to get a Rom version that will support camera functions. Would that not assist us as well, if they are able to do it? the first product comment was posted on June 2nd, so they've had HC as early as then for our hardware. that just means that it is possible that they are using tabletroms work. I would also be interested to see if they actually have drivers from nvidea...
anyway, I just thought it was interesting to find it.

Help with unlocked, unbranded tablet (no root)

I have an unbranded tablet running Android 2.3.4 that is unlocked but not rooted (I can't get superuser to work or busy box to install) that I trying to do some hardware/OS related work with and need help. In specific, I am trying to get a USB keypad to work (recognizes keypad but keys do random things and doesn't really work). I believe this requires some ICS libraries (official support added in ICS). I am also having difficulty getting the unit to find a GPS lock using a 3g network (no on board GPS support, but it should be able to find a rough lock using 3g and/or wifi and I don't know why it isn't). In general the hardware is decent but the software is buggy crap, making what could be a decent device crap. I also need some of the default functions for the onboard buttons changed (I think this is build.prop?) We have a kinda random and specific use for these tablets and I have hunted all over for someone to help me and have found a lot of JAVA programmers and not true blue linux/android hardware devs. I understand this is such a specific piece of hardware and unfortunately the work we do won't be able to be shared by a lot of people. If anyone can help me though, I will gladly donate to their cause and/or buy them a few cups of coffee. I would also perhaps be willing to let you keep one of the tablets to play with (they're actually pretty cool). If this is something you can help me with PM me and we can go from there. I am in Dallas, so someone near by wouldn't hurt! Thanks!
PS Please let me know if I have broken any XDA rules here. I have 3 cell phones and a rooted nook color, so needless to say I'd rather not get banned...

[Q] what, and how to, change a MyTablet to

Hi Everyone! Yes, I'm a NOOB, I've never done anything on the developer side of things.
For Father's Day my wife bought me the MyTablet which has ended up to be a bit of a scam...1ghz processor, I have 16gb of memory with another 16gb card in it.
Info on my tablet:
Model Number: A10_MID
Android Version: 4.0.3
Baseband version: 4.0.11
Kernel Version: 3.0.8+ ([email protected] #8)
Build Number: crane_q7-eng 4.0.3 IML74K 2020520525 test-keys
System update feature indicates it is up to date.
Anyway, I've had some issues, it seems the company was really a 1 man shop that has disappeared, doesn't
respond to phone calls or emails, etc. Several of the apps I have such as the music player it came with doesn't
keep my playlists, and lately the thing has been shutting down at 64-71% power on the battery. So, I'm thinking
it's either faulty hardware or faulty software. That's not to mention that many apps on the google store said my device
was not compatible with it.
Since I can't do anything about the faulty hardware part at this point (the 2 year warranty was apparently a waste of money)
I thought of wiping the entire thing and starting out fresh with a new O/S. Any suggestions? I was thinking of attempting to turn this into a Nexus 7 type tablet which means installing Jelly Bean, preferably 4.2. I'm not sure how to go about this, but I've been looking around the forums and see there are lots of ROMs out there or maybe it's a Port I'd need. Would you guys recommend going the way of the Nexus 7 or perhaps a different android incarnation?
The Black Rose one found in these forums seemed interesting.
I found these forums and a way to wipe my tablet and add another in this article on techradar.com about how to install android on other devices
but I want to make sure I get something good and can do it correctly.
Boils down to these questions,
1.) Which O/S would you recommend for the tablet?
2.) Which files and/or file types should I download?
Thanks in advance!

[Q] Downgrading OTA 4.3 to 4.1.2?

Hello all,
I've been going down rabbit holes looking for a definitive solution or answer to the issue of downgrading my 4.3 i535 on Verizon back down to 4.1.2. I don't particularly care about actually rooting the phone (would be nice but not necessary). I'm having no end of Bluetooth and audio-when-docked issues with my phone that were never there on 4.1.2 and would desperately like to (a) revert back and (b) somehow tell the phone to never do an OTA software upgrade again.
I am not really all that technically adept, although I can follow instructions fairly well--provided they're valid for my device at the current time. I have never attempted any sort procedure like this and I'm usually quite content to be a good little sheep and do what I'm told by Verizon/Sammy. But when I can no longer reliably pair my device with my Alpine aftermarket car audio system, nor have it properly play back audio directions when using navigation software like Waze or Google Maps through the BT-attached speakers, then I need to do whatever it takes to re-enable this lost functionality.
Any directions or comments greatly accepted. Again, please, I respectfully ask that if there's anything that can be done, that a kind soul here would post directions for a complete n00b, not an experienced phone expert. Frankly, if there were shops near me that I could bring it to to have done, I'd have done so already <grin>. Many thanks in advance.
Device name: SCH-i535
Android Version: 4.3 (received OTA, directly from 4.1.2)
Baseband version: i535VRUMCL 1
Lernel version: 3.0.31
Hardware version i535.10
Thanks in advance.

A. You can't revert back. You're stuck with 4.3 now.
B. You can stop future Ota updates with root access by freezing sdm1.0.apk and fwupdater.apk with titanium backup.

If I'm stuck with 4.3 then I think rooting is probably a case of closing the barn door after the horses are gone. The phone is basically useless to me when driving--i.e. when I actually need a mobile phone--since it won't reliably work with my truck radio, and the manufacturer has indicated that the VZW 4.3 update has caused them nothing but headaches and it's not their equipment that's too blame.
I've been solidly behind Android since my first Droid, then X, then HTC Incredible, then Razr and now the S3, but I'm seriously having to reconsider doing the unthinkable and switching platforms unless I can find another high-performance Android-based pone that allows tethering (so long HTC) and that will play nicely with the radio. Any suggestions? As for "freezing sdm1.0.apk" etc, that is far beyond my knowledge at this time, I'm sad to say. I'm just a J-random-user who needs -- and is willing to pay whatever it takes -- to own a phone that plays as close to 100% reliably with my truck radio as possible.
I live on the road; I need BT pairing, BT music from my SD card and GPS directions to be heard over the engine/road-noise. At this point I'm in tech support hell between Alpine and Verizon, each blaming the other--and meanwhile all the guys in my company who use "that other platform" haven't had a single issue. This one has me completely dead in the water. I don't want to go back to AM/FM on long hauls, not when I have 30+ GB of music on my device...and not to mention my GPS that can't be heard. I'm not ready to jump ship, nor do I want to, but....help??
Thanks in advance, guys. Color me frustrated....

Hmm
I'm still on 4.1.2, so I can't really comment on the bluetooth quality. I do know it's a common 4.3 problem.
There may be some fixes out there somewhere, or there might be xposed modules that will improve bluetooth related signals. Either way you're going to need to do a little research on it, I can't specifically think of anything I've seen or read.
Freezing is super easy, titanium backup makes it very simple. Another update could lock the phone down even further and preventing it could pay off. Rooting on 4.3 is also very simple. It's not a complete loss being stuck on 4.3.
Also you can install custom 4.3 TouchWiz roms with safestrap, bluetooth might work better for you on one of those roms.
Those would be my suggestions.

Wow. OK. Hmmm.
So what is the process to do this, where does one find the images, support files, and so on? I've managed to find Odin 3.09 and the USB drivers are loaded in my laptop and Developer Mode is active, but I don't know what to do beyond that.
Again, I'm absolutely green at this and deathly afraid of bricking it. I'm dead in the water without a phone, even one that's barely functional, so any instructions will need to be clear and unambiguous.
Failing that, is there such a thing as an S3 or S4 that can be purchased clean with ICS on it, rooted and protected from OTA upgrades easily, and that will work on VZW?
OK.
Well Rooting 4.3 is extremely safe, I'd say pretty near 100% success rate with nearly no chance for a brick.
Even with a brick in nearly every scenario, it is always possible to fix it as long as you have access to Odin.
Regardless, you'll want to start here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2639337
That has everything laid out for you, access to the rooting methods, using safestrap as a recovery, and download list for everything you can use on the phone. Also has recovery methods for bricked scenarios, but if you follow those threads you shouldn't brick.
As far as buying a phone goes, you may be able to find a 4.1.2 galaxy s3 on swappa or somewhere. But it's going to be hard finding one.
All s4's are in the same boat as the s3, all are on 4.3 with locked bootloaders.

[Completed] Finally got my SM-T217a running 4.4.2 rooted

But because for so long the bootloader seemed unlockable, and because when they finally did get it unlocked, it was with a device that was almost 200$, there was a complete lack of development on this particular device once it was given the 4.4.2 upgrade. Over the course of a year, I have found many things about the tablet that I have been unable to find out on my own to get into.
I found that the tab 3 lte was actually designed as a really big phone, but the dialer, phone and dialer storage were blocked by AT&T, so even with a sim chip, the tablet just will not function as a phone without getting a VOIP app, and I really shouldnt have to considering that I have a perfectly good phablet capable of actual phone calls. I dont know how to use terminal emulator very well, or if the language changes drastically between versions of Android.
I was also wondering if it was actually possible to unlock the bootloader from Terminal emulator now that I have full root.
Is there a way of finding out if my current stock rom is one of those that have the SO- attached to the system folders so that I cant write anything to the system folders without reverting to out of the box system restore. And lastly, I was wondering if there was ever any custom recovery that was made for this device that would be usable now, considering that when the device came out it was on Jellybean, not kitkat. If anyone could help me I would be greatly appreciative. I know it sounds like a lot of work for a tablet , but I am not exactly overflowing with money to go and buy a new one. This was a gift and I just want to try to avoid bricking it when I just now finally got the damned things rooted.
