[Q] Battery life survey - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Hey guys,
I'm trying to figure out what people are getting for idle battery drain. It seems the best i've ever been able to achieve is around 3.5% an hour, and never consistently. I've seen some people report idle battery drain close to 1%. So i'm wondering what people are seeing for their idle drain, and asking for as much info as possible about their setup, including rom, kernel, governor, uv/oc, any specific apps frozen or auto-starts removed, google apps or alternatives (such as k9 vs gmail)?
Thanks guys!
Ratkid

Please search and do research I am reporting this thread as it really isn't necessary.

There is a difference between help with battery life and a survey. This is also not specific to wakelocks. Please don't assume that people don't search or do research. I have done quite a lot of research, and searching, including reading almost the entire bbs thread (about 900 of the 1000 or so pages). I am asking for what experience other people are having. Also, if you look at my question, it is not about battery life in general, but specific to idle drain percents. You can have phenomenal idle drain percentages, but horrible battery life.

That's the thing this is pointless each phone is different use those threads to maximize your personal performance we already have enough threads on how to boost performance we don't need a survey to see how everyone is doing again its pointless

That may be your opinion, which you are entitled to. I however disagree. I think this is a different topic than "improve my battery life". Yes every phone is different, but that does not invalidate the question. If you do not want to contribute to this thread in a positive manner, please don't clutter it. If people truly feel it is useless, they do not have to post.

OK so please enlighten me how this does anything for anyone other than start a flame war of this ROMs so much better blah blah blah blah

If this is really something you wish to discuss, lets take it offline. In the meantime, I'm still hopeful that this thread can be useful, at the very least for me if not everyone else. Again, please don't post again unless you have something to contribute along the lines of the OP. Thank you.

OK so knowing exactly what you are looking for in this thread I can tell you you won't find it there are far too many variables. Your looking for an average amongst everyone which is insane. For you to find even an inkling of an idea you need every single point of data I'm talking ROM, kernel, every single installed app, every setting, BBS stats looking for wake locks, what every app does in standby, its far too much data to compute to give you any accurate idea it's a fruitless idea the only thing you can do is go to each ROM thread and look at what people are saying about it.

See that's just it. An average means the good, the bad, the great, the ugly, and the ok. It includes the heavy users and the light users. The people who use data hungry apps, and the people who don't. If enough people contribute, regardless of what apps they are using, you can get an idea. It is not an insane idea. Yet again, you have chosen to post in this thread with information that is not relavent to the thread. Instead you continue to attempt to put me down instead of both respecting my wishes to take this offline, and respecting my request to keep the thread relevant. You claim that you are trying to prevent the forum from being flooded with junk postings, yet this is exactly what you are doing instead of helping. At this point, my thread is useless because of the back and forth we are having here. I would be shocked if anyone would post in here after reading all this. Moderators, please close this thread as "The_Blue_Waffle" has ruined it for me.
Thank you.

On cm 10 I get about 4 to 6 percent loss a hour. With no notifications. If I get an email and the blink light notification goes off for a while it gets worse. Most of the time it's in my pocket never notice the blink light if I miss the notification. I've recently used set cpu to lower the clock speed to 192. Might help

It was destined to fail from the start. This thread is garbage. All it does is waste space and clutter the place up. We already have battery threads. At least 3 of them that are chalked full of screen shots, set ups, and comparisons.

I just tested mine. With data and wifi off and a few phone calls I woke up to 19 hours 21 minutes on battery and 87% battery remaining. I did use wifi for a few minutes.
I don't have data on my phone yet. Can't justify the price considering how much I would use it.

[Q] Pretty big design flaw with the wifi

Anyone else notice this? When you hold the phone in landscape, the wifi straight drops out? (Most notably when covering the power button end of the phone with the left hand.) Seems to me that having the antennae built into the back panel/battery cover was a wrong design choice.
Edit: And let me add that reception doesn't drop, just the wifi.
we both made a post about this at the same time. I'm having issues also. I didn't notice that it happens in landscape specifically. it happens all the time to me

I'm am no such thing... I think perhaps you should first watch the Video titled:
'You are a NOOB on XDA-Developers'
before you post anything. This issue must have appeared 100s of times on this forum. It would be sensible to use the search feature in future to prevent the forum getting clogged up with the same old topics... I mean it is taking an age now to find anything which is new and worth reading on the sensation forums.
It is not my intention to cause harsh feelings towards other members. However, it's just sometimes easier to convey a point with a slight bit of sarcasm (a concept I know some folk find difficult to grasp) than doing what I am now and stating the obvious about the fact that you should search the forum before posting. IF your issue isn't already in the forum, or it is not particularly related, then you need to post a clear and decisive thread, detailing all of your issues. However I can assure you this has been posted many times in the past week or so and I'm getting sick and tired reading the same old thing!! I'm sorry if I upset you or dented your ego; you'll survive
I hope you continue to enjoy the forum, just as I intend to do myself
Thanks and again I'm sorry for portraying 'stick up my ' behaviour (perhaps a tad extreme response from yourself), just my way of communicating a message; which in future I'll bear in mind because I now know it can cause irrational responses from people, something which I personally do not aspire to cause.
Hope you enjoy the rest of your day.

I have no intention of being a Mod - to much hassle. I would like to note that many Mods on this forum would have given a similar response that I just have - USE THE SEARCH, it's there for a reason!!
Well said hayden. he is right noobs. I think you should have read the forum rules first laid out by the mods. Read other threads. If your issuer isn't there then post and we will be more than happy to help

Mine will be delivered tomorrow so I cannot do any testing right now but by any chance is there a way to change the power setting on wifi? If it is in power saver mode or something similar it could be more susceptible to interference.
Different phones but my HD2 had some weird quirks on Wifi till I forced it to full power on wifi.
Might not help but its something to look at perhaps.
No problems on wi-fi, so far so good, after unlock it will be perfect.

Yea, 10332007 you nailed it... I went to settings > wifi settings > Menu > Advanced and turned on "Best wifi performance" and then it would only drop one bar. (previously dropped 3). battery sucker, but it does decrease the severity of the issue, besides I'd expect some drop in signal with my meaty paws in the way.

No real criticism intended, but I would like to point out a slight flaw in your argument. I am not what I would consider a noob, and I am searching for the very same answer.
Had you actually been nice enough to help this person, you would also help others that are searching for this information too. We all have to wade through a ton of false leads when trying to hunt this type of info down. I find there is quite a bit to sort through sometimes, and it is people that are kind enough to answer these questions (noob or not) that also help so many others.
It seems that this is the spirit in which this community was built upon, I see so many angry and irritable people around this forum these days... it is such a shame.
In this situation, you would not only have helped a noob, but you would have saved time for all the other folks that are trying to locate this info and read the title of this post.
I think he gets it now, guys.
This was his first time posting, relax. Hopefully from now on he'll use the search feature, but for now the least you can do is just help the guy out AND advise him about the search feature. Let's not scare away a new forum member.
Wish I could help you, but I am only getting my Sensation next week.
I don't have this problem at all. Have tried and tried to replicate it, but can't. Glad I don't have this problem.

Undervolting Newb

Hey guys I know it's probably been discussed before but I really need to find the correct info. I'm looking to save battery life to the fullest. I even went and bought the 3500mah battery and it seems to improve a lot. Now I just flashed the infusion kernel and want to learn about under clocking. Any help?
Just throwing this out there, but your best bet would be to check in the general section. People are going to end up jumping on you for posting in the wrong section.

BLN, and honestly the best way to learn about UV'ing is by trail and error. Each phone can handles uv'ing differently. Some can take a lot, while others cant. If you want to learn some more in depth look through the kernels thread and somewhere in there is a guide to everything pertaining to overclocking.
Ah. Ok I gotcha. Is there a way to turn that off Usps when I touch it it doesn't come on. I likethe notification idea though. Also how exactly does unvolting work. I don't mind playing around but how do I use it. Lol

I would suggest reading through the Infusion thread. I know it's long, but here's the basics:
If using SetCPU (I know a lot of people say you should only use Voltage Control, but no one has been able to specifically point to why, leading me to believe that it's just a bunch of placebo effect crud, since the kernel does all the work and the sysfs interface used by both is the same.
In general: Start with small UV values and then work your way down. Values that work for some people fail for others. For example, some people manage to undervolt by 100 mV at 100-400 MHz, I get SoDs if I undervolt by more than 50 at 100/200 and 75 at 400.
The general rule for the dev forum is: If you have a question that is not answered in the thread for a kernel/ROM and is specific to that ROM, you can post it in that ROM's thread. MAKE SURE you read/search the thread to see if your question has not already been answered! Never post a new thread unless you are specifically raising a development-related topic. (Bug reports and feature requests is NOT development. Exception that I would personally accept is that if you see a bugfix commit in github against a kernel for another Samsung device, or possibly a non-Samsung device that has a bugfix against hardware we have, such as the BCM4330 wifi chipset's crappy power management, and the bug affects our devices, I'd be interested in knowing about the commit so I can investigate applying it.)

Which kernel for my Nexus S? suggestions...

oh, and i saw a thread, a user said he lost only 3% of battery on idle throughout the night using a certain operating system, but i cant remember the thread..

I would go with the ICUP Kernel Edition (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1401455)
Good battery life and smooth performance.
Your best course of action is to not create a thread asking for people to do things for you.
Go sort the Android Development forum by Stats and find the most popular kernel. Read every word of the OP and however much you possibly can of the thread itself. It might take a day or two just to properly educate yourself and get some background. Flash the kernel, use it for several days, and then and only then make an assessment of battery life and performance. After you have done this, go back to the kernel's thread and make a post documenting your experience and what did and did not work for you.
You've registered this month, you have 5 posts, and you've created 2 threads that are completely pointless. Try to contribute something. What I outlined above is possible for anyone no matter what their knowledge level.

bad battery issue?

hi, I've been experiencing a depleting battery issue. I used to be able to plug my phone to charge and it would be able to reach 100% within an hour or so (and that's with me texting or browsing internet) but now it seems like I've got to leave it on the charger for half the day for it to reach 30%. It also depletes super fast and will drop around 15% per minute. i noticed the battery issue started happening after I upgraded from 2.3 gingerbread to 4.1 jellybean. I'm a newb at this so forgive me. any advice?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
Get a new battery
First and foremost upgrading to jelly bean doesn't go for such consequences of battery degradation. And more over to have a better life, the first charge of new batteries is always recommended for 4-5 hours even if it gets 100% in 30 mins. And from then on it should be charged till it attains 100%. In your case, I think so that the battery has some problem.Replacing the battery may work out in resolving your problem.
I checked to see if it was a bad battery by switching out the old one with my husbands skyrocket battery, but there was no change. However, I managed to flash a new ROM with the little battery charge I had left and noticed a significant change in how much battery life was being held. i'm guessing that the old ROM had a role in eating up my battery life? Is that possible?

Just some wakelocks

"Just some wakelocks" isn't very helpful, unfortunately.
OP, there is some kind of issue involving active wakelocks. You need to use Better Battery Stats to isolate and reveal them. Without finding out what they are, a new battery may have the exact same result as the old one and you will get nowhere. While it is well known that the Skyrocket eats batteries on stock ROMs, they aren't nearly as bad as you are describing.

I'm going to assume that the "you"referenced to is all users in general, since that post was either my first or second one. While I do understand the need for the user base to do their own research and educate themselves, the knowledge base will never expand if older, more experienced users do not attempt to guide the newer users in some fashion. so I think that the last couple of comments should now be moved to a different thread because they were mostly about doing the research/work just like the older members have done. call me a newb, but seems like the older members can't recall their own rules. POST YOUR COMMENTS IN THE APPROPRIATE THREAD.
and to those who did have the kindness and courtesy in helping to assist me, I thank you. I have done a bit of research, but because of lack of free time (due to being a mother of 2 and having a daily routine), it just seemed a bit easier to ask my question than to spend hours on end looking for what may or not be a solution.
with that said, I don't mean any disrespect to any members, new or old...thanks for the lesson!

Rule number 1 is search the info exists you are obligated to search you aren't the only one working, raising kids, and whatever else most of us are but we make time to learn and research to better ourselves. If you can't be bothered to find the info there are other sites but this isn't it.

See, that kind of attitude just isn't helpful. While the first rule may be search, there are better ways to go about addressing it than just basically calling a new person lazy and denigrating everyone. I know and understand where you and other older members are coming from, but it doesn't have to be done in a confrontational manner.
As far as my original quote of you, your claim that I have done this a couple of times and you seeing me do it is bunk, as I have only once said anything about not helping people out, aside from the responses given directly to you. My posts where not used poorly, as I feel that they were directly relating to the OP and were at least pointing in a direction that could be helpful. Most of the forums I have been on directly ban the instruction of people saying "Go search", as it isn't helpful. Perhaps the person searching didn't know how to phrase it well enough to find a relevant answer.

On the forums I moderate, I ban lazy people and I promote searching.

Best combination for battery life?

Hello guys
which combination of rom and kernel scores the best battery life?
It's simple:
Kernel: Usage differs
Rom: Questions Belong in Q&A based on 4.4
Sorry if my answer may be 'cocky' but we've got a special section on XDA for questions and answers.

Use the search feature in xda, there are many tips for battery improvement.
On other hand, i get 5 hours 30mins SOT on wifi and 4 hours SOT on 4G with stock rom and with medium usage.
No matter what you do, flashing diff rom/kernel won't get you any proper battery improvement. Just stick with stock rom and wait for Android L for a better battery performance and usage.
Yes stick with stock..
Battery is nothing to do with ROM and kernel combination. It is to do with ROM and kernel settings.

Read the first 4 posts in the battery thread in my signature.
And as pointed out above....roms/kernels make a very minor, if any difference to battery life.
Setup, usage and signal strength are the main factors. ?

I have a notepad for XDA posts and link copy pastes. I'll just add the standard statement for this to it. Lol
Someone asked me to stop repeating this recently, I said no....I won't stop trying to help the misinformed. ?

Its totally based on your use. There's no magic combination that works for everyone!

If there was anything that was "best for battery life", wouldn't someone have been able to prove it by now?
I guess it doesn't help with so many claiming their new ROM/kernel has greatly increased their battery time. Subjective opinions with out proper testing shouldn't be taken as fact though.

think about how many people using any kernel/rom claim that its the best for battery. then again, there are just as many people that claim that the certain kernel/rom give them the same battery life. in reality though, its all about you. how you use your device, how you set it up, which apps you use, etc. but there is one variable that you have no control over, thats the quality of your phone/data connection. and that will determine what is the best battery possibility is for you. if your phone/data signal isnt good quality, then your battery life will always suffer, no matter what.
9 times out of 10....it's the flashing the new Rom and or kernel that clears out an undiagnosed battery issue they had and magically their battery life seems awesome on the new Rom or kernel. ?

Yep. Maybe someone(hint hint) should start an "All-in-one Best thread". Since the reversal of XDA policy I would much rather see all this nonsense contained to one singular thread than reposted in different forms every six hours. I would do it but I'm lazy and wouldn't be able to give that thread the attention it deserves. Just some food for thought.

It's been suggested to do that, like the N7 2012 has had for awhile....but the individual threads are still allowed and preferable to one dedicated thread.
That was told to me. Reason is the "best" questions usually come with something else. Not just "best Rom"....usually best for this or that....or comparing this to that.
I like the one thread idea....but it what it is and those resisting it are best to let it go and ignore the threads if that's their choice.
That was also said by moderators.
Just letting everyone know. ?

Thanks KJ.
I just PM'd one of our mods about the issue. He said he'd go over it with the Mod committee. I also asked for it to be started by a mod and stickied. We'll see what happens. Either way it's the same stuff repeated over and over. Copy and paste. lol

I asked for some rules. Eg "what ROM has this feature set" = yes, ambiguous best threads = no.
However we probably shouldn't hijack these threads to discuss it.
Everyone with suggestions pm a helpful mod such as @El Daddy and maybe we'll get a compromise, but for now let's just answer the threads with the usual answers

Anyone asking questions like this should stick to stock rom and kernel.
If you can't be bothered to actually use some roms and kernels and tell us what you think how can you evaluate an answer?
Also, obviously you are getting into a touchy area and rejecting anything rom/kernel devs can have to say about it. You want them to come here and battle it out for you?
There is no such thing as best, and many of the custom roms and kernels make a good combo. Look at the rom and kernel threads and decide which gives you the options you want.
