Hey,
For all of you that own a white HOX, have you experienced the matte white finish on the back of the device gradually wearing away near the bottom corners (or wherever you most often hold it from) and losing its characteristic grippy matte-ness, becoming slightly shiny and smooth?
I'm concerned about the long term consequences of using the HOX without a case (although i use a case) as the bottom right area of my phone has lost some of its matte texture, become smooth white.
I don't have a problem with the white finish on mine. The only problem I have is the SN, IMEI, and SKU sticker coming off from sliding it in and out of my pocket.

How long have you had it? I've had mine for 2-3 months and so far it's okay. There might be a little shininess going on, but it's hard to tell.

I don't have that problem. I mean, I have the glamour grey one, but I digress...
Does anyone have a problem with the screen flaking? I guess it's the anti glare coating on the beveled edge for me is flaking off. I can't understand it because it's been in a case the entire time i've had it. Of course I can't call up warranty since i've rooted and unlocked my bootloader. This sort of software modding thing though shouldn't void a defect warranty.

I've had mine since around the beginning of April. As of right now, the wearing away has been pretty minor, and is distinctly noticeable in direct light, and appears around the bottom edge, near the corners, as that is where I most commonly hold my phone from.
I actually have a case on right now, but noticing this slight wear-away concerned me (which further convinced me to keep a case on), but wasn't sure whether or not it would keep wearing away.
I would describe it as... a smoothing out of the matte finish, kind of the way it looks if it gets a little oily. The affected areas are more reflective and 'shiny' , but not truly smooth like the finish on the GS3
Again, it's not major, but just something I was wondering about.
This is common in plastic items if you look at a well used mouse or keyboard over time the most struck areas will smooth out lucky the hox is mad of inject molded plastic so the white one is solid white so it wont "rub" off it will just show polish like brass over time.
My grey one did that after about 2 months. Two spots about the size of a dime on the back, where it would touch when set down. They polished to a shiny slippery finish. Haven't used a case at all.
Sent from my Note II
Yeah, mines getting shiny on the corners, and my screen has some barely perceptible scratches on it. I'm not too worried at the moment though, I'm going to warranty swap due to a bright spot on my screen.

You shouldn't need to keep that on your phone anyway. You should have received at least one or two extra stickers in the packaging that came with the phone, which are there to be used for warranty purposes etc...

From internet research, I have read the matte finish can be susceptible to scratches. Not from abuse, just regular daily use. What I have not found yet, is which color seems to hold up better. Can anyone provide input after logging some regular HOX use? Thanks
the white holds up incredibly well in my use
I guess it would all come down to what the surface is on. I remember the white on my ole My Touch 3G chipping off rather quickly. That was paint on plastic. It seems that the coatings on metal seem to be a lot more sturdy.
After having both colors, the white definitely stands up better it seems. The grey shows every smudge imaginable.

I agree the grey is a smudge magnet, but it doesn't bother me and its not rubbing, scratching or chipping off so I'm plenty happy not having a flashy white phone.

great white
White for me. after nearly 3 weeks of use, i have no smudges, scratches, nicks, chips, etc. no case either, just the standard HTC hardware for me. Also, FWIW, I owned a white iPhone 3g for years and it held up amazingly well over time. some kicks and scratches that you'd expect with that hard plastic-y finish, but it looked way better than black iphones of a similar age. I think it's like auto paint: black always looks awesome when you leave the car wash, but it's dirty by the time you get home. just my $2c.
Zagg...... No worries

It's polycarbonate... Put the paint is blended through, so scratches are less noticeable. My white HOX is holding up like a champ.

Nah, the white case doesn't have to be giant. Mine is uber thin, I'm using the case because it makes the phone less slippery.
I have the grey HOX with a Otter Box and a cheapo screen protector.. It seems that the texture of the polycarbonite will rub off with constant exposure to rubber? I have 2 small rub marks on the back of the case.. I'll see if I can post some pictures soon. Mom has the white one, it's flawless without a case, loose in her purse.
I have mine naked, and its not holding up near as well as I thought it would.
I have what seems to be 'wear spots' on the back of the phone, directly under the C. It looks almost as if the matte finish worn away to show a smother finish. The spot doesn't feel any different from the rest of the case though. And this was only after 2 days!
I'll see if I can post pictures a little bit later.
Edit: White color

i would think the Grey could stand up to more grime and dirt than the White, obviously. i have the White and i baby the thing to no end. it's still pretty clean but it's inevitable that it'll get scuffed up..
grey may be less of a dirt magnet but the white one goes faster

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone who has been using the HOX naked has had any issues with the matte finish wearing off and becoming glossy? When the phone was first released, I heard a bit that this might happen, so I wanted to see how everyone is fairing.
I bought my HOX on day 1 and got one of the OEM HTC cases (blue one with horizontal slots along the whole back).. and its been HORRIBLE! The casing is so thin that it started to crack in the corner when I removed it to clean or change my SIM card. Eventually, a piece of the case broke off. I then checked my One X and found out that dust had been trapped underneath and because it was loose, scuffed up the whole bottom of my phone! It was a complete waste of $20. So now I'm thinking about going nude for the time being.
Rocking it naked without an issue. Having a sleeve custom made, though, just to have a little bit of protection while running around. Pics will be posted once I finally get a chance to pick it up.
Grey. Naked since day one. No problems.

Just thought I'd throw this out there. My naked white is still incredibly clean. Rubbing it slight removes all small blemishes. I still haven't had any major mishaps with the white but I'm fairly confident that it will come off easily if I get proper cleaning materials. King of surprised by how clean it is really.

No its fine naked. Just like the post have mentioned. A good minimal case that adds no bulk really is the case mate barely there case. If you need a case I recommend you check that out. It is very very thin and looks good. Just in case you decide you want to try a case.

The matte finish is definitely starting to wear and I don't believe it will hold up. Look very closely and under bright light right by the speaker grill where the phone normally rests when sitting on a surface. There is a bit of wear in the matte finish. I can confirm this on two different device. These are white ones. This is too bad because I was really hoping the case on this phone would be super durable. With the way HTC talked it up it sounded indestructible. Looks like it's time to see how well the s3 case is holding up for people...
Nothing makes me cringe more than a beautiful design hidden behind a case. But, I also feel for those whose naked phones go flying to the ground.

Naked. There is a very slight "chin" on back just below the "beats audio" logo.
This is the area that touches whatever surface the phone is set down on. On my HOX this area is starting to "smooth" very slightly. Noticeable by eye really and only in good light. Not causing me any concern.
The One X just feels too good in hand to put a case on. :good:

Bought this case on Amazon for $10 USD
I liked it because I like my phone naked because the One X is the most beautiful phone I've ever had but i dropped it once and it scared the **** out of me, so I went hunting for a case. Wanted something that would preserve the beauty of my phone but give it some kind of protection from my clumsiness. Hey this thing is $10 and comes with a screen protector, what more could you as for?
Fits the phone nice and tight but not too tight. Doesn't cover the flash and all the necessary holes are cut out just right. Now I feel better about carrying my phone around not worrying too much about physical damage. I love this phone so much, in 3 years when the galaxy s7 comes out Ill still be using the One X as my media/camera device.
I would rate this case as 10/10 because it was exactly what I was looking for
but realistically if I factor in its protection status this case gets a 7/10
Hi there,
May i ask if this case blocks the GPS signal? On my old phone, the HTC Desire HD, such "silicon type" cases causes the signal to be blocked. Thanks.

My main gripe with this case is because of the nature of TPU it turned yellow and I mean FAST, within a couple of weeks.

yup. The nature of TPU. Mine did the same thing.
Wasn't 3 days but it didn't look very nice for long.
I have this case. I love it. It doesn't block any signals. Another big perk of it is you can lay your phone on a table with the screen facing down. The case extends 1 or 2 millimeters past the screen so it doesn't touch the screen.
edit: I got the black one, so I don't know about the "yellowing" thing.
Same here like most others. Great case, fits well. Looked gorgeous when it was new. Within a couple of weeks looks like crap. Turned yellowish and looks dirty like you just came back from some place where they were having a dirt storm or something like that. Looking for an alternative now.
P.S. Bought the same kind for my SGSIII and same thing happened to it too. On the whole I like Diztronic very much but I guess I would stay away from transparent TPU cases because of this technical issue.
For those who don't use a case, how is the wear and tear on the phone? Any discoloration of the white phone? I ask because I ha e a clear silicon case that is now disgustingly dirty and no longer clear and the phone looks so slick without a case.
Don't know how for others, mine stays in a case of one sort or another and has Ghost armor on both sides.
But, I can probably guess OneXs are holding up better against wear an tear versus another shiny high gloss phone used under same circumstances.
Mines white too, on topic, an has black armor on it, the exposed parts that are white are easily cleaned an show no wear from when phone is not cased but depending on what does in their life any phone is going to possibly show signs of wear in bad situations without a case.(Where exposed)
For myself, just comes down to, do you feel lucky or not against drops while being case or skinless even. If it wasn't for that darn camera ring protruding so far, I'd go completely case less and rely on G/A alone.
Thankfully, our phones are not painted, a friend's GNex got scarred badly in a case where sand got in with it,...where we could buff it out I bet.

I had a full body best skins ever on mine until my back covering started to peel up a little so I took it off. I haven't dropped it yet, but as far as normal pocket and set down scratching, none yet. I do have a screen protector on it but that's it. I love the matte finish on the back, can't bring myself to cover it back up. I was always worried the camera ring was gonna get scratched up on the bottom, but it seems to be tough as nails.

I've gone case-less since I got mine on launch day, and cosmetically never had a single problem. A couple of months ago though I dropped it on a tile floor, and even though the screen or body didn't crack it wouldn't power back on, so something internal must have been damaged. I was able to use my insurance to get a replacement, but I'm not sure having a case on it other than something with some shock protection like an otter box would have helped anyway.

You know Murphy's Law...once you take the case off you will drop hard on the concrete....
This phone is waaaay to weak to be naked... I've broken my screen so many times from knee height drops.. one including being dropped on carpet. My old VIVOW was a lot stronger....

I don't have a case I never liked them. I have cracked the screen on my old s3 though, happened to hit the metal strip that separates the room..Other than that I have a right pocket only rule and I make sure i NEVER put it on my lap when driving.
Been using my s3 without a case since the day it came out. Couple nicks around the metallic edge but otherwise in perfect condition. I don't really have a habit of dropping phones though.
Majority of my drops are because of my son.... when I drop it myself I get the ninja/football player move of catching it and nearly kicking it through a field goal...but I like to think I am the worst draft pick ever because I usually catch it with my foot and it goes nowhere.

no case ever
i only have a screen protector on my phone. I avoid cases for phones because I keep my phone in my pocket and I don't like the size of the phone with a case on. This may not be the best idea because I am also quite clumsy but I really do like the thin sleek phone with no case. In any case, I must say that I am quite impressed with this phone. I've had it for about 5 months and have dropped it somewhere between 10-15 times. It is usually just a small drop but I have definitely dropped it out of my coat while taking the coat off and out of the car when getting out multiple times and only have a few small scratches on the back. There has been no damage to the screen at all. So to anyone that is scared of removing the case, my advice is to enjoy the design of the phone and not worry about the back. After all, a replacement for the back cover is cheaper then many of the cases out there.
I run mine naked about half the time, in a tpu case the rest of the time. I have two very small nicks in the silver trim around the sides, and a little scuff on the home button. I've had the phone since a few days before launch, though I did replace the battery cover recently because I broke it taking it off one time. Always have an SGP Ultra Nano screen protector though.
I'd say most people should have no problem running with no case, but it may not be the best idea. I love the feel of the naked phone and frequently use it like that, but I have dropped it from about waist height a few times onto hardwood floors or low carpet.
The phone feels nice enough that you do keep a firm grip on it and treat it like your precious, and if you're careful to keep your pocket empty you won't scratch it there. But because it's so slick, it can slip out of your pocket when sitting, or off of a surface you've set it on. Plus if you have anything else in your hand, it's easy to forget to keep a firm grip on the phone.
I've now got a Cruzerlite tpu case that looks and feels awesome, and like any tpu case removes in seconds with no wear. The material provides a great deal of protection for its minimal bulk, I've accidentally thrown my old Droid RAZR onto asphalt and concrete on separate occasions with just a slim tpu case with no harm done. Recently, I've been carrying with that case for peace of mind, and taking it off on occasion to use it, or if I'm at something rather formal.
But I see no need for something more than tpu, like an Otterbox, for the average person. If you're particularly clumsy, if you frequently skate, run, bike, 4 wheel, hunt, etc with it, or have a fairly physical profession I can see it, but for the rest of us it's overkill.
