[Q] CWM recovery issue with Rom Manager - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

So I just rooted my Verizon Galaxy S3 and unlocked the bootloader. I flashed Clockworkmod recovery using Rom Manager to update to the latest version. Made a nandroid, installed Titanium Backup, linked it to my Dropbox and uploaded. I downloaded the latest CM10 nightly to flash but the stock android recovery appeared instead of CWM. Found some info that I need to flash a clockwork compatible kernel first. The questions I have are: If I install the latest CM 10 nightly will it automatically install a clockwork compatable kernel? If not, where can I download it from? and if I do need to flash a kernel first can anyone give me detailed instructions how to do this as i'm relatively new to this stuff and don't want to brick my phone. Thanks, any info would help.

Did you unlock your bootloader? for a custom recovery to stick you need to unlock your bootloader. Follow this guide

I did, had it unlocked and rooted. I guess there was some sort of issue with Rom Manager on the S3. I use it on my Galaxy Nexus and have no issues. I ended up abandoning what I was doing, uninstalling Rom Manager and going a different route. I have no prior experience with Odin but figured out how to install CWM . Downloaded I535vrblk1, flashed CWM, unlocked & rooted again. . Thanks anyway for the reply.

You can reinstall ROM Manager. It is something to do with some of the newer OTA's and the leaks. I have read a few posts in the forums about this in the GS3 and I really can't remember the fix but your recovery not sticking had nothing to do with ROM Manager. I think the fix was when you rebooted to recovery to flash a kernel right away, whether it be KT747, LK, or any of the other. Now that I typed this I'm about 99% sure that was the fix. Like I said above though, it has nothing to do.with ROM Manager, so if you're like me and find a lot of the tools in it handy you should be able to reinstall it. If you have a problem again just flash a kernel.

Upgrading to CM7

I currently have a 2.2.1 based rooted rom and recovery is installed.
If I want to upgrade to CM7 rom, can I flash it straight via recovery ?

Read their installation instructions. It tells you what you are asking.
Samsung Captivate Full Update Guide
I read the CM full install guide. Just want to confirm that if I have recovery already installed on my phone I can skip the recovery install step.
Some posts I have read suggest that a GB bootloader is required before a GB based tom can be flashed. not sure if this applies in my case.

From the install guide:
Installing the ClockworkMod Recovery
"If the Samsung Captivate is already rooted & has ClockworkMod Recovery installed, skip this section"
So yes you can skip the recovery install step.
From reading a few posts that I searched "CM7 Gingerbread Bootloader" it appears if you have froyo/eclair bootloaders it will work. If you have gingerbread bootloaders...... it will work. The key is not to mix them. Once you go to Gingerbread bootloaders do not flash back to a 2.1/2.2 rom using a one-click that includes the bootloaders.
This link is a post containing many one-clicks that include bootloaders and those that do not.
Good Luck.
Just checkout the CM7 captivate page and you will get all the info you need.
CM7 page in this forum ?
I have seen some videos on Youtube where flashing a GB rom included several steps including backing up EFS data and later restoring it.
Is this required if I upgrade to CM7 by flashing a ZIP via recovery ?
No it's not required. It's up to you whether to do an EFS backup or not before flashing another ROM.
I suggest doing it once the first time you install a new ROM, just in case.
EFS backup is simply copying a folder over to the PC ?
The EFS folder appears to be empty when I look at it using any file browser. Is that normal?

Unlocked, now can't install kexec roms?

I unlocked the bootloader. Roms like Synergy, Bean, etc no longer boot (stuck on samusg scrreeen)
Any idea?\

What methode did you use to unlock it? I'm running the stock no nonsense rom and I belive unlocked with no problems
Do other roms boot? Will the newest CM10 nightly boot? Will anything boot?
Did you flash a different recovery? If you were using kexec roms before (beans is one, so is synergy with imo's kernel) and then flashed a non-kexec-supporting recovery, that'd explain not being able to boot. If you're unlocked, you don't have to flash a new recovery.
If you did the unlock correctly, you should be able to boot whatever you were able to before. If you can't get anything at all to boot, it's possible you flashed a bad aboot image.

CM10 ROMs boot.
I think it's because I used CWM 5.x rather than 6.x. Phone isn't recongized by PC, no idea why. Any idae how to get 6.x using the terminal app in CM10 and wifi?

Thanks. Flashing Synergy now to test it...let's see what happens.
EDIT: Flashed just great, but still isn't working. But, it's cool, CM10 mods work and I got what I needed (exported Verizon contacts and improted them to Google Contacts using My Verizon's webstie)

Yep, that's exactly the problem. You installed a non-kexec recovery and your roms still use kexec.
You're sure you selected the right options in EZ recovery? Open it, scroll to the recovery pane, select the "recovery" radio button, change the drop down menu next to it to CWM 6.0.1.0, click the "Flash!" button. That should let you install whatever roms or kernels you like.

Being unlocked shouldn't have any impact on being able to flash using ez-recovery. One thing you can try is use EZ-Recovery to flash stock recovery, odin back to the stock verizon image which should relock the bootloader and start all over.

Why do you need to flash stock recovery to use Odin to flash stock Verizon rom? Odin has nothing to do with what recovery you have installed. I flashed stock unrooted rom while rooted and having CWM recovery, it worked just fine. Once you flash stock rom, it restores the stock recovery too anyway. I'm fairly sure of this, but if I'm wrong, please correct me anybody.

Just to be safe. Wanted to get rid of the sprint related elements from the original root so I Odin'd back to stock with cwm installed using the VRALF2 tar found here. Tried to boot into recovery to factory reset prior to first boot and had 0 recovery (not stock nor cwm). Luckily the rom booted and I used the simple root method to root and install EZ-Recovery to install CWM.
If I flashed synergy v1.7 and used rom manager v5.x.x and then unlocked the boot loader how would I flash a new rom? Do I have to use ez recovery with clockwork mod v6.x.x since it is now unlocked or can I continue using rom manager with clockwork mod 5.x.x. I'm a noob and won't be looking to switch roms until synergy gets jellybean. Thanks for the help and hopefully I made sense with my question
synergy to beans to synergy bootloop
I think my issue might be related to the issues stated above.
So after after having unlocked my bootloader with EZ unlock & installing beans custom Rom via TWRP , I decided to go back to synergy. I made a nandroid of my synergy which was origianlly installed with CWM and figured I could just wipe and restore that with TWRP. Total bootloop.
OK, so I pulled the battery, tried it again...bootloop.
SO I pulled the battery, wiped and installed the synergy zip thinking I could try a fresh install. I got a message in TWRP that E:sd-ext was not found, but wipe seemed to happen so I continued the process.
installation said it was successful but now when I try to boot up, I either get stuck in the android is upgrading applications (looping over and over) or it gets through there and tells me all teh com.android.xxxx applications unexpectedly stop.
is this a soft brick? can I recover from this? are there incompatibilities between the kernels of bean's custom rom and synergy for verizon samsung galaxy s3?

[Q] S3 Wipe Data

I have flashed my phone a couple times with the leaks from here and now I am at the JB 4.1.2. but not with the premium suite. Is it possible to go back to factory and receive the official update from Verizon or is there a leaked build with the premium suite available. I have looked and not found any.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301814
I have used the nodata wipe versions of the build in the past using ODIN. Will that link work with it?
Thanks.
The link is to a full ROM you flash in recovery. So if you have root, unlocked the bootloader, and installed a custom recovery, you can flash the ROM in the link (and the firmware in post 2) and be on the latest official OTA.
If you are still stock and haven't got the latest OTA, you may just have to wait until it gets pushed to your device.

Pardon my ignorance, but can you point me to the instructions on how to use those 2 files. I have only done Odin before so that is why I am not too sure what I would do after downloading both zips and putting them on my SD card. Thank you!!
So you are rooted, with unlocked boot loader an custom recovery? Not sure by your post. I assume you are since asked about going back to take an ota.

That is what I am not sure abaout. Each time I downloaded a link and installed it I used Odin v3.07 and also got firles(from xda) that had No Data wipe. SO if that means I am rooted, I am not sure. I have downloaded, then connect phone to Odin, install file and voila, it is back up. That is why I do not know. Thanks a million!

I would suggest you install ROM Manager. Once installed (it will only work if you have root), you can have it flash a custom recovery (Clockwork Mod" or "TWRP). You can then use the ROM manager to boot into the recovery you just flashed. Once in recovery you can flash those 2 zip files.
You would be well served to understand this a bit better but the ROM Manager will get you there with a minimum of knowledge. You can search here on XDA for instructions on flashing with CWM or TWRP, whichever you choose.
Good luck

I am trying to root the phone and it keeps telling me that there are no privileges???? I am trying to root and just cant get past that.
Go to the play store and download a root checker (there are several free ones) and it will tell you if you have root. If not, use one of the many guides to root. I suggest this one, follow this guide to root and install custom recovery Once you are rooted with a custom recovery you can flash the rooted version of the VRBLMD3 and the associated modem, RPM. etc.

Download latest cm10,gapps, go to recovery, wipe data/system/cache/dalvic, flash Rom then gapps. Make sure you have the latest recovery whether it's twrp or cwm.
Also if your going to flash a kernel, make sure it's aosp and and 3.4 if you're going to flash the latest cm10. I usually set up my phone and then go back to recovery and flash a kernel.
Also,I would backup your imei. There's a few threads around about why to do so and how to back it up. Sorry, can't post any links at the moment

Don't forget to backup your current ROM if it isn't already and
Go over to rootzwiki there is a stickied thread there about making a special backup for your nv items (imei meid n stuff)

XT926 - not sure how best to proceed

First off, I just switch to my first android phone from iOS, so although I have plenty of experience jailbreaking and unlocking over there, I'm new to this, so hand-holding is appreciated
I have a developer XT926 phone. Fastboot says it's unlocked with status code 1. It came running 4.0.4, and I rooted it using motofail2go. I now want to install CyanogenMod 10.1 (or some other version 4.2 rom that you guys think is better), as described here. However, I have been unable to find detailed instructions on how to install it after booting into recovery mode. (I'm guessing those steps are well-know on xda, but forum and google searches didn't help.)
Additionally, since I have an unlocked dev phone, can I install one of these unsigned roms directly, or will I need to first install clockworkmod, safestrap, etc (and if so, any advice on which one).
Thanks the any help you can give me
You need to install a custom record very like twrp or cwm. Either is fine and you can easily switch later if you want to try them both out. Once you have your custom recovery installed, you'll need to boot into recovery. From there you will v be able to backup your current setup followed by a factory wipe and ROM install. Good luck

Thanks. So I have twrp installed and working, and made a successful backup. I was about to install CW 10.1, when I noticed comments that it seems to have a lot of issues. What rom would you recommend I install? Liquidsmooth? Eclipse? CM 10.1 anyway? Thanks again!
