I got my vzw gs3 on Oct 1. Within the same day I had it wiped and put on AOKP jelly bean rom. Essentially since i've had the device, i continue to have issues where the phone drops data completely. This isn't an issue of cycling between 4G/3G, as even if I disable LTE, I still have problems where 3G drops and I have no data at all, after about 30 seconds, data comes back.
I came from an vzw OG Droid 1, and still living in the same house, I never had any data issues like this on that ancient phone. So I'm confident it's not the area I'm in the or the towers, and has to be a hardware or software issue.
Has anyone else experienced complete data drops on the S3? Is there any solution?
I've searched around and it seems I'm not the only one. For example, https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/777654.
I've tried a battery pull, pull out the SIM card, turn the phone on, do another battery pull, put the SIM back in, and turn it on.
I've also tried flashing different modems, from here http://rootzwiki.com/topic/34053-of...zon-sgs3-sch-i535-odin-or-recovery-flashable/, to no avail. The problem never got better, only worse.
I535VRLF2 - Original modem that came with the device
I535VRLHE - Didn't help
I535VRLI5 - Didn't help
I535VRLJ1 - Made it worse
I535VRLK1 - Latest modem leak, going to try now.
The last resort option I'm going to try is flash back to complete stock and see if I still get issues.

I live in a place where 4G is rough and work in a place where no 4G and 3G was rough.
J1 seemed OK at first, once it settled it got bad, flashed K1 and seems to be holding strong, will have to try over a few days and see.

I have had my phone since it came out, and everything worked fine until yesterday it seems. I had kept the phone stock until July 13th when I flashed the PBJT voodoo enabled kernel. Afterwards everything still appeared to be fine (and much faster by the way) until yesterday, July 17th. I noticed at work that when I turned data on (I usually keep it off to save battery) the phone wouldn't connect to 3G/1X. 4G doesn't really work in my building so I knew that wouldn't work, but I can usually pick up CDMA no issues in there.
I thought maybe it was just a fluke so I kept trying the entire rest of the night to get my phone to connect to any data network to no avail. Wi-fi is the only thing that's useable basically. LTE will connect if I jump-start it via airplane mode, but is then dropped shortly after. I still can't get 3G/1X to work at all though. Even switching the phone to CDMA only it just will not connect. I did flash back to stock EE4 last night thinking that might be the issue (and knowing I will need to be stock if Verizon needs to see it), but that hasn't helped at all.
I'm desperately waiting for a family member to get home so I can get on the phone with Verizon but I thought I might see if anyone here has any suggestions? I've changed about every setting I can think of.
At least that's what I think it was... I rooted, unlocked BL, and flashed a couple custom ROMs and radios on my VZW GS3. I tried JellyWiz, AOKP, ParanoidAndroid. I can't be sure exactly when, but at some point, I lost the ability to get a good signal.
I work in a basement where only Verizon gets service. I used to get 5 bars all the time here and was able to get 1X network coverage and stable WiFi. After rooting, ROMing, whatever, I couldn't get any signal at work (the big circle-slash symbol), was dropping WiFi like crazy, and at my house which is a good 4G area, I could barely get 3G and making a call was a hopeless endeavor. I would constantly drop calls, and the ones I didn't drop were so choppy that the person on the other end of the phone was completely unintelligible.
It should be noted that with each new ROM I flashed was a clean flash. I Odin'd back to stock everything to try to remedy the issue. Bootloader got relocked, baseband reset to stock, everything. I put this phone back to exactly how it was out of the box. The problem persisted.
I finally got a replacement phone and the problem is gone. Besides the fact that my VZW-using colleagues had signal the whole time, this new phone also gets signal.
Now I'm hesitant to tinker with this thing because I'd rather be on stock TW than have a phone that is non-functional at the two places I frequent most - work and home.
Does anyone have an idea what happened here???
Quick version:
My phone got really hot and since then I've had no to very poor reception. Got a new SIM card from VZW and went back to stock (multiple times) with the same results.
Long drawn out version:
So I've had my phone for over a year (preorderd the keep my unlimited data plan) rooted it as soon as I could (though I think I waited a week or two) and have had no trouble loading various ROMs (ASOP and TW). A few weeks ago, when the Unofficial CM 10.2 came out I decided to try it (full wipe, coming from a CM 10.1 port) and while my battery drained very fast, it was stable. An update was released and I saw people were commenting positive on the battery life so I flashed the update (just flashed over). The next day my battery was draining even faster (full charge at 7pm, 30% by 10pm) so I charged it while at work. A few points through out the day I recall it getting warm (while idle with no apps open). Leaving work it got hot enough while in my pocket I had to take it out and pull the battery. After letting it cool down, the battery was dead.. let it charge up and did a full wipe to revert back to a CM 10.1 port (I think it was liquid but not 100% positive). Since then, my signal has been spotty though WiFi works. On a fresh boot, I'll have full LTE, then it drops down to 1x within 5 min... down to nothing after 10 min. I wasn't able to send or receive calls either (tested with my work cellphone, went straight to voice mail). I've tried flashing various modems (VRLG1, VRBMA2, VRBMF1) and tried going back to the CM10.2 with no luck... I then went back to stock (ICS) with similar results.
Thinking the SIM card may have been fried I called VZW and explained my situation (not mentioning that I was rooted, just the phone had overheated and I did a "factory reset"). With the wait on the SIM card, I activated my old HTC Incredible just so I can have a usable phone. I got the replacement SIM card today (still on stock ICS) and it was able to activate. But after 5min my signal dropped down to nothing. Enable/Disable Airplane mode the signal goes back to 4G and after 5 min (estimate) it drops back down. I then tried a stock JB (through odin) and this one states 4G available but the browser just hangs and doesn't load. I was able to send and receive calls for one attempt, the next just hangs when sending, and receiving goes right to voice mail.
I'm to the point where I'm thinking something got fried with the radio and need to buy a replacement phone. Just figure I should post something here and get a solution that may save me a few hundred bucks.
If anyone has any advice on this I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you,
-Mike
I just experienced something similar. I got my S3 in Feb and it's been just fine. Last week, I discovered that I was not receiving phone calls (people who called me said my phone would ring until it eventually went to voicemail but my phone would be sitting next to me and never ring). I then found that I could not hold a call for more than 20 seconds before the call would start breaking up and drop. I could hold a choppy call if on speakerphone or BT but the second I would pick up the phone, it would drop the call and state either "Call was lost" or "No signal".
I had not made any software changes to my phone so there did not appear to be any reason as to why this started. I tried everything from changing roms, reverting back to stock, changing basebands, etc. Nothing seemed to work. The strange thing is that I had a perfect wifi and 4G connection.....the signal was strong and would not fluctuate in this case. I would receive text messages just fine as well but making or receiving a call would just kill the signal.
I was able to get by using Spare Phone and having people call my Google Voice # (even on a 4G connection, calls worked very well). I called VZW to troubleshoot (obviously not mentioning I was rooted or unlocked) and after doing some testing with them, they agreed a new sim would not help and it was a physical defect with the phone. Under normal circumstances, they would have sent me a CLNR but, unfortunately, I had a small crack in the corner of the screen (completely unrelated to this -- happened months ago). Since I have insurance, they advised that I just file a claim with Asurion for the cracked display and pay $99 for a new device. Sending it back to VZW would be a gamble -- if they didn't see the crack then it would have been a free CLNR. If they did see it, then it's a $535 charge for the replacement. I ended going through Asurion who sent me a brand new phone and it's working beautify.
Not trying to hijack your thread by sharing my story but the only thing I can think of that may have caused my issue was that I used an external battery to charge the phone while it was off. I noticed when I unplugged the device from the battery, the phone still thought it was being charged (LED light still light and charging animation was still going). It stayed like that for around 5 minutes until I pulled the battery and eventually started the phone back up. I noticed the issue with reception about 3 days after that. It's possible that when the phone is off, either the charging circuit or software isn't properly regulating the power which may result in an overcharge leading to damage of the components.
Did you charge to full while the phone was off using a non-oem charger? If I were you, I would try calling VZW and see if they will offer you a CLNR assuming the phone is still in good condition. I'm willing to bet there is nothing you are able to do to fix the issue at this point ---- you could try taking out the screws on the back and checking for a loose antenna connection but it sounds more like electrical damage based on your information.

There is likely to be something wrong with the phone itself. You did everything you can possibly do to fix it yourself.
So since yesterday I went back to CM 10.2 ROM and I'm able to send and receive calls but then, it may be spotty.

OEM USB cable when I'm at my computer plugged into a USB Hub (one port for charging) and at night I have it plugged into a dock (forget what brand, got it free when my bro ordered one for his HTC ONE and they shipped one for an S4)

This is what I figured, just hoping it could have been software related.
Found a used Galaxy Nexus cheap so I ordered one of those... should tie me over till I'm ready to get a better phone next year (or later).
Thanks for the help.
I searched and did not see anyone else experiencing this issue. I have a Black 32 GB stock rooted. It worked fantastic for about 2 weeks and then all of a sudden I noticed the following:
Day 1: No SMS received. I was on WIFI and had network signal in the notification bar but did not receive SMS that were sent to me.
Day 2: No Cellular Signal. I looked at the APN and it had disappeared. I attempted to add it again and reboot the phone and it wouldn't add. The phone began rebooting on its own and continuing with a bootloop after running for about 10 seconds it would reboot again. It did this throughout the day. I called Google and they had me do some soft and hard resets. After the soft reset the phone would connect right after startup then disconnect after 2 seconds and reboot itself. I hard reset the phone and relocked the bootloader and reinstalled factory recovery and it is still doing it.
Google has given me authorization for an exchange but I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas because I'd rather not be without a phone for 2 weeks.
BTW I am on Straight Talk
I had a similar issue
I had a similar issue. After a month of functioning normally, my Nexus(rooted using CFroot, stock ROM, T-Mobile) lost the ability to get reception. First, it showed network signal, but cell access was not functional. A few hours later, bars dropped to zero, and it seemed like I could only get reception in the strongest signal areas. I would get signal sporadically when driving, but never when I was stationary. The phone never had problems with rebooting though.
After spending a day trying to fix it, factory reset, relock, flashing a factory image, I called Google, and they warranteed the phone.

It just seems so much like a software issue as opposed to hardware that it surprises me they are willing to warranty it... but I guess I'm not the expert.
How long did it take you to get your replacement phone?

I got a replacement phone pretty quickly. The phone shipped the day after I ordered the replacement, but YMMV.
Why do you think it was a software issue? The problem persisted after I switch back to a factory image. The replacement phone, running the same software does not have the same issue.

That makes sense that it was a hardware issue. I guess it could be a faulty radio or something. I'm glad to hear you got your device shipped so soon. Did you end up having to pay shipping?
I ran a nexus 5 for about 4 days and went through two of them both having issues holding a signal. Both phones would start with LTE and then drop to 2g go to 3g and then 4g back to no bars and then 2g and 3g. I was stock all the way and I wish the nexus 5 worked better. It could be a software issue as when I took the OTA to 4.4.2 it became worse. All the areas I was in while this happened were areas that were supposed to be strong for 4g and LTE.
That said I I need a phone that is a bit more reliable even though I'm on T-Mobile. I switched to the LG G2. It has a better antennae and doesn't keep bouncing between modes when in various areas.
After flashing CM12 on my nexus 5 (D821). I flashed the 20 jan Nightly and everything was working fine untill i update to the 22nd jan nightly when my 3g simply stopped connecting or had very spotty signal, i didn't give it much thought at first thinking it was a nightly problem but after one week i reflashed stock lollipop, locked the bootloader, even tried kit-kat and the problem is still there. Before flashing cm 12 2g/3g/lte switching was working perfectly for about one year.
So utill now: i flashed different stock rom's, different kernels, radios, custom roms and nothing worked. When i tried switching the sim with another one from the same network, 3g worked on the other phone so i doubt that the sim is defective, but on my nexus i had the same connectivity issues. I also played with the *#*#4636#*#* menu and managed to get 4G working again but only in CDMA mode and I cannot receive any calls or texts, but the internet connection is working, 3G also connected at some point but the signal was very poor.
I am lost now, and also desperate because edge is too slow for anything. What confuses me though is that this seems to be a software issue since the cause was me flashing a different ROM but all the signs point to a hardware issue.
Can anyone plese give me a second opinion? Is there any fix for this? (Also i recently went to my network's service to replace my screen assembly, could also this be an issue? the issue appeared about 2 days after getting it back from them, also about the same time i flashed cm12)
Thank you for your time.
Also another thing i just noticed:
I opened my phone's back cover and the writing on the frame covering the motherboard says D820 and in the bootloader my phone shows as D821. Is this common for every D821 model?
I started to wonder if i got all my components back from the phone service... Although it's highly unlikely that they mingled with the motherboard since everything that i had on my phone was still there (custom ROM and all my personal info) maybe they switched the antennas...
Is the antenna connected?
Im going with disconnected antenna as well.
