I just got upgraded from CM 9 stable to CM 10 stable and I love it. Only problem is battery life. I feel about a 10-15% reduction with the new upgrade. I've had CM 10 for about 4 days now. I don't want to touch the performance settings without knowing what I'm doing. Is there a way to change my performance settings to extend the battery life? Also has anybody played with a different kernel with CM 10 stable? Thanks

Don't worry about changing the cpu and governor settings. There is an option to set at boot. Make sure that is disabled, so if you have any problems a reboot will go back to default settings. I use the conservative governor, and have my minimum cpu speed set to 192. I've read that that speed is not entirely stable for many people, but seems to be working fine for me. That has been pretty good for battery life for me. I believe the default governor is interactive now, and the minimum cpu speed is set to 384 by default.
Do you just "feel" a battery difference, or do you have any actual numbers to back up that assertion? Keep a close eye on Settings / Battery and use Better Battery Stats to record solid numbers and identify what's actually eating your battery.
Also turn off google now location settings if ur not using it. They are really hard on the battery.

Thanks for the replies.
It seems to be my screen that is responsible for eating up my battery. Have had the phone disconnected from the charger for 4 hours now and all I've done is 20 min with screen time doing a little bit of texting and facebook and my charge is at 75. I have the automatic brightness setting off and put my setting at pretty low.
The cell stand-by battery usage is 8% during these 4 hours. Should I maybe try another radio or is this normal? It lost signal for about 10 min today.
Just turned off google now and selected the conservative governor. Let's see if this makes a difference.
I used to be able to go all day with my phone with CM 9 and I even have the nexus battery.
Thank you for all your help
That's most definitely not normal, at least in my experience. Are you using the vanilla CM10 or some variant?
Some things to try:
Install Better Battery Stats (find the free version on XDA via a search) to see if any apps are causing wakelocks. This is a must.
Use CPU Spy or something similar to see if your phone is entering Deep Sleep. This is a must.
Turn off Google Now unless you actually use it
Turn off all unnecessary radios (WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS) unless you're actually using them
Turn off all auto-refresh settings in every app you have -- all social apps and weather are the biggies
For me, turning off the default auto-refresh in Facebook, Google+ and Twitter are massive savings alone, then Settings / Battery & BBS will help you locate the remainder of the headaches quite easily.
You might want to consider swapping kernels too, or at the very least reconsider your CPU governor and scheduler settings.
I would stay away from conservative governor you won't get much performance out of that, stick with what comes stock and use on demand.... even the default interactive sucks my battery down

I'm currently running the vanilla CM10
Turned off google now location access and set the govern to on demand early this morning and it is performing a little better most def.
I have noticed that my phone lost signal 4 times during the day for periods varying 5-10 min. I am currently on the I727UCLF6 radio. I'm thinking maybe I should try another one. Could that help with that battery maybe?
I have been thinking about switching kernels but I am a little doubtful because I don't want to mess up my phone too much since I so heavily depend on it. I loved the hotcakez kernel that came with AOCP, maybe i'll give it a shot this weekend.
Thanks for all the help people! Def the best forum by far on the web.

Just do a nandroid backup of the entire phone first before installing a new kernel and your risk drops to zero. If you install it and it all goes to hell, just boot back into recovery and restore your backup.
As for radio ... if you drop signal that often and your phone is constantly searching for one, I suppose that could impact the battery, sure. Are you certain you're in an area with solid coverage, though?
Learn more about the different governors and schedulers: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1950084
Yea I might have to play around with some kernels this weekend. Luckily it is a long weekend so I'll have some time if I mess up
My phone will go from 4 bars and a good signal at -78 dBM in my apartment and then randomly I'll lose signal for abut 5-10 minutes. A restart usually does the trick or I can just wait until it regains the signal which can be frustrating. I never had any problems with my signal at home running CM 10 so that leads me to think that there might be some problems with the radio.
Just want to confirm that these are the 5 radios I can use for AT&T even though I'm running JB.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1754473
I've been using a UCLI3 modem I found on XDA a couple of weeks ago, it has been incredibly stable and strong for me. But as many people far wiser than me have said elsewhere, everyone's mileage with radios varies and it really just takes some testing to see what works best for you.
so I should be able to run the 5 ICS radios I found eventho im running jb right?
thanks for your help

I know I know that disabling data can get me 24-30+ hours of battery life. However for my on the go lifestyle, that's just not possible. I depend on my phone to keep my email updated. I have four email accounts (two of which are exchange) that sync calendars and contacts as well as email. I was using push on my two exchange accounts, but I've changed that to do every hour for one and every 15 minutes for the other. my other emails are set to check every hour. I have craigslist notifications set to check a single time per day. I have a weather widget that is only supposed to check every 4 hours.
I am running Perception 10.2 with the latest firebird 2 kernel, but have also tried various versions of speedmod's kernel. I have tried the following modems
JL1, JL2, JL3, JK4, KP1.
No matter what I cannot seem to get more then about 10 hours of battery life on standby ONLY. no phone calls, no turning the display on, nothing. I consistently get around 1 hour of time per 10% drain on my battery. I'm not asking for miracles. I just want my phone to be able to last at least 12 hours (a full work day plus drive time.)
I've already set the programs with the most spartan settings I am willing to use. I'd rather have my phone pushing data to my much more often, but I understand that's not going to be possible unless I can find a drastic increase in my battery life. What else can I do?
I have 3 email push accounts, and google voice syncing all the time. Email includes emails with attachments too, and EDGE is pretty much sufficient for most of these things. Even for normal day to day activities like browsing XDA, EDGE is pretty much sufficient.
So I would advise u to switch from 3G to EDGE. U can turn on 3G when u need more bandwidth demanding apps. This would reduce some strain on ur battery.
Only downside would be that u can't browse n talk on phone at the same time. But its ok by me to get a few mails after the call I am on is over. I can live with this small inconvinience in leiu of the additional battery gain.
As of this minute, with the configuration I have in my signature (am using xcal kernel), I have like 63% battery left after ~7.15 hours standby, with 1h31m of display on and 40m of calls, alongside mails being pushed.
Edit: At the end of my 'normal' day with 'moderate' usage (1-1.5 hours calls and 1.5-2 hour display being on (not for games/movies, but with active data transfer on like texting), I reach home with ~50-60% battery left.
On a side note: I would recommend to turn off updates in weather widget, and use a manual refresh when needed.
how do you easily toggle between 2G/3G? it's my understanding you have to use service menus to access the change.

If u r on the ROM I am using, u can get it in network settings.
Some 2.2.1 ROMs do not have it in network settings. If ur ROM doesn't have it, u would need to access through the service mode code "*#*#197328640#*#*.
When in service mode, here is the sequence to select in the options:
option 1
option 8
option 4
option 3
Note: Pressing 'back' key will NOT take u back. It will close the service menu. Press the 'menu' key, and select 'back' to go back.
Be warned, this would not stick on reboot. U would need to repeat these steps whenever u reboot.
Alternately, I would suggest u move to a ROM that supports EDGE/3G switch. If the ROM supports this option in network settings, it would stick on rebooting too.
Yeah, I just found that. Perception supports switching, but you have to go to the settings menu to do it. I found something called Juice defender, and will play around with that as well. Unfortunately we aren't on an ASOP build, so we can't auto toggle 2G/3G, have to do it from the menu. I will report and let you know what I find!

Sure. By the way, I don't use any apps like juice defender. Realized that my battery is well off without them by taking care of little things like turning off wifi and bluetooth when not using them (well, these are the only two things I take care of manually).
I would normally agree with you, but as I was looking through the app I saw that it actually disables data while the phone is off, and only turns it on temporarily at intervals to allow application updates. If it truly works just like it states, I could have essentially a battery experience similar to turning off data while still enjoying my notifications. More experimentation is necessary.

Juice Defender gives me 60 to 70 % more battery life. I have it set to sync every 15min and wifi is location based.
Yeah, Juice Defender works absolute wonders! it gives me the same amount of battery savings that switching to 2G gave me, but automatically enables and disables itself when I need it. I'm on 70% battery left with over 7 hours off the charger, and that was taking voice calls and doing some light email checking!
Try a kernel that supports OC/UV. You don't have to overclock, but undervolting is what you want. Check out Suckerpunch kernel. Nice guide by shaolin. Can't argue against a black belt. lol.

Unless I can only have it underclock while I'm not using it, I think I'll pass. I bought the Captivate for it's 1GHz proc, if I wanted something slower I would have gotten the aria.
You misunderstand. It's undervolt. That means use less power at different processing states.

you can undervolt a proc without underclocking it? How is this possible, unless they changed the FSB or timings on the chip?
I pretty sure you can use voltage control and set highest state at 1000mhz and set lower voltages for states below it. That's as techincal I'm going to get.

By running the chip slightly out of spec.
You can usually undervolt each cpu step by 50 to 150 mV. How to find the right point really does just take trial and error. And as with all overclocking/underclocking your mileage may vary. Some phones can really be pushed to the limits and run fine, others don't like even the slightest changes to the stock settings. All depends on how well your phone was put together, and from where in the wafer your CPU was taken from.
Undervolting can save you a fair bit of battery though. Won't help a whole lot when you're actually using the phone (since the screen and 3G/WiFi radios will suck way more power than the CPU), but it will help seriously increase your standby time.
PS While undervolting and overclocking capable kernels tend to be one and the same (since the underlying code is related) you DO NOT need to overclock your phone to undervolt the CPU. You can run your CPU at stock 1 GHz while still undervolting each frequency step. Course, with some tweaking and good luck, you can even get your phone to run at 1.2 or 1.3 GHz while still using no more power than a stock phone at 1 GHz.
How much battery gets used when the phone constantly switches between EDGE and 3G? I'm curious because my building has thick walls and my 3G signal constantly drops down to EDGE when I pick it up, then goes back to 3G when I leave it sitting out on my desk.

Any time your phone is forced to switch from 3G to Edge, or even from one band to another, it's not a good sign for your battery. Exactly how much power difference? Grab a multimeter and hook it up between your phone and battery. Record some data, and test for statistical significance. And let us all know.
Short of that, I'd say if you spend a lot of your day in an area with known bad coverage, I would hop into the engineering mode (*#*#0011#*#*), and lock your phone to a specific band and radio mode. Like 850 MHz EDGE, or 850 MHz W-CDMA. Or if you are in an 1900 area, then 1900 EDGE/W-CDMA. Not just EDGE or 3G mode, but a specific band AND radio mode. You need to be smart, and pick the band that has the best coverage so you don't make life even harder on your radio, but it can save some battery life over the phone jumping around ever time you walk from one side of the room to the other.

I am coming over from the sd version of android on my HD2. I had to download all sorts of stuff to get it working correctly. I already found Set CPU does not work correctly. Has anyone tried SD Card Increase or Juice Defender. Are these things needed?
I read the speed up apps thread but was wondering about these apps in particular.
Is there a way to regulate the CPU to save battery?
Edit:The latest version of SetCPU seems to work fine. I think I had an old version.
I am also using Antek App Manager to freeze battery hogs like wifi calling.

Anyone try a screen off profile with setcpu yet?

SetCPU works at the driver lvl. The Nvidia tegra 2 option is there to pick when you 1st load the app. You can set profiles as well. you just can not control the scaling yet. You can control how the cpu runs
Running SetCPU and it works fine for setting profiles and helping to give ya a bit better battery life.
I'm also using juice defender and power manager. With them and my profiles set up similar to what I had on my Nexus One I am getting really good battery life.
I got over 24hrs (closer to 36 actually) on my last charge, but my usage wasnt too heavy, but close to average for me.
I've got a profile set-up for "screen off" through SetCPU along with using Juice Defender running all the time. I also used Bloat Freeze to stop the random stuff from even starting to cause drain.

Last cycle I did, I got 25 hours on a single charge. This is exactly what I'm doing. First, root. Next, set up sync so that it only syncs apps when you are using them, as there is a problem with the 4g handoff to Wi-fi that seriously messes with battery life. Set Wi-fi sleep policy to never, so 4g doesn't interfere with it. Set device to use 2g network only, you might get better reception. If you need a fast connection, just enable it real quick. There are widgets you can use to switch it back and forth quickly. When rooted, use root explorer or bloat freezer to get rid of/freeze ALL T-mobile apps. These things always use data, even when Wi-Fi is available. Since they start on their own, you will always have 4g on, sucking your battery dry (and your wallet if you don't have unlimited data). I've also heard updating the apps works, if you are planning on keeping stock ROM. Keep brightness to its lowest setting unless you need it higher for whatever reason. This setup might seem extreme, but i've been on the internet since 6 am, playing need for speed shift, watching youtube, listening to music and I'm at 65%.
Factory reset and do the google setup immediately. For whatever reason, this is important. Let the battery run dry for the first week or so, and then charge it all night.
Above all, remember that the battery stats on this device are ALL CRAP.

Though far less sophisticated, I like Superpower the best. It very simply and efficiently disables data/wifi when the screen is off, which is all I need.

Sorry for the slow reply, had a deadline beating down on me.
For the most part I just set up several profiles in set CPU and also profiles on power manager, and I just use the basic settings on juice defender.
SetCPU profiles I have are:
Screen Off 760max/216min
Battery<25% 816/456
Battery<15% 608/312
Hope that help some. Mine seems to be averaging about 18-20 hrs per charge now, but I find myself messing with it quite a bit I think once I get back to my normal usage, like my usage on my N1, it will easily make it 24hrs with a charge.

Hard to answer without testing some roms for yourself....
Synergy Rom is a good start which eliminates bloat from the provider...and then optimize the rom. Add a better kernel over stock like Imo or Ziggy and that took controlling CPU power (depending on your setting) can help gain better battery life...mean over 8+ or 12+ hours of life
30+ hours with almost 4 hours of screen time : cm10

This isn't really a tweak or script, but turning off mobile data and using wifi helps a ton. Constantly searching for 3G or 4G connection is what kills my phone's battery.
Here is what helps me..
-turn off any data that doesn't need to be running in the background while you are using it i.e...gps, 4g, bluetooth. (Use "phone info" from the market to switch from 3g to 4g.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771840
-make email manual push. when you have email set to constantly search for new incoming messages it can run down more than needed. if nothing else switch to every 15-30 min.
- turn off all notifications that you dont need to be notified about
-screen brightness will be a HUGE battery eater. I have mine set at 1% most of the day which really helps. this screen is bright enough to have it that low and still see well.
-download "widgetsoid x2" free. a fully customizable toggle bar which will allow for easy on off for items like bluetooth, gps, wifi and gives you a brightness option to customize 3 settings. I have mine set for 1, 25 and 45%
-use setcpu or another app alike to control cpu. create a profile for "screen off".I set my profile at 348x486. this drops the processor while screen is in sleep mode and will save battery life.
-I dont know how effective this is, but I heard it helps and makes sense. Choose a dark wallpaper. Having a bright, full white wallpaper takes more battery life to display.
As for ROM's, its hard to say. there are so many things to take into consideration when someone says they got 30 hours on a rom vs the next person who only gets 12 hours. how much are they using it, what do they have running inthe background...etc. I tried both bean and synergy and I prefer bean. He just released R6 yesterday and people seem to like it a lot. I personally prefer R2, his original release. It has been super solid and I have had better results from it over 3.1, V5 and his late R6. My buddy has had GREAT results with synergy, but I did not. I gave it a week and ended up restoring back to bean.
download BatterySaver app from market. My s3 runs 12-15 hours on "Intelligent Mode"
Honestly, you can only do so much with software tweaks. If you're a hardcore power user, I suggest getting an extra battery of a similar size (~2000mah) or getting an extended battery.
As for what you can do to save battery, the only thing I can think of that people haven't already mentioned is turning off animations. It can make things feel a bit choppy, but you'll get things done faster, which means less screen time.
Im running Viper XL and the reason i flashed it is because i heard it has above average battery life, but im getting maybe 10-13 hrs max. I've heard cases of 24 hr battery life, and I cant seem to achieve it. I am running Beast Mode Kernel and have the powersave governor. I am running Stock CPU frequency and have one core active. Am I missing something, because i got better battery life on paranoid android which kind of suprised me.
You really have to drill down on the tweaking and settings. Took me a bit to get what I wanted as well. I completely shut off Google Now, you can toggle off LTE and surprisingly, I raised my min cpu frequency to 594 and ondemand. Shut off HTC powersaver as well. Try a reboot after you tweak up all your settings. I think battery life was better on 2.4.1 but it's pretty well on 3.1 too.

I'm assuming you're running ViperXL 3.1. In that case, I'm surprised you're seeing such poor battery life. But, usage and settings are everything. Things like Google Now and GPS are major battery hogs. Facebook, Google+ and other push applications can also hamper battery life. Check your background sync frequencies! How long is your screen running? At what brightness? etc.
That being said, what strikes me is your kernel. You should not be using Beat Mode Kernel (last I checked it's not even optimized for the latest android version). I recommend you use the stock ViperXL kernel or Elemental v1.5.
I've ran ViperXL 3.1 yesterday with elemental v1.5 for more than 24 hours, 3 hours screen time while syncing 3 e-mail accounts. YMMV but with proper set up it's definitely possible.
Give us more information about your usage!
Alright, thanks for the information on the kernel, its a shame because i heard good about it. But as my screen time i run low brightness and im pretty heavy on texting, I used LTE for about 40 mins total today. can you tell me the way you disabled google now? I've been tweaking the settings a bit and i guess i just havent found my sweet spot.
Edit: And im running 2.4.1 actually sorry should of put that in first post.

Battery life is a very elusive thing. There are simply too many variables. For every ROM, radio, etc. where people will say they have much better battery life, you will almost certainly find others that have worse. Its just a fact of life with modding phones.
I've gotten about a day and a half on a single charge ever since the phone was released, and over 48 hours with later firmware versions (stock and custom ROMs) as of 2.2X and newer. Some folks can't even get through a half a day.

CleanRom 5.1 might get a little better, but I've had about the same battery life using Viper XL 3.1. A lot of the other things to look at are certain apps that seem to cause a lot of drain (depending on options). The most frequently mentioned are: Google Now, Facebook, and Maps. Other than that, lower brightness and shutting off LTE are the next biggest contenders.
Hi all,
I have been using the ONDEMAND CPU governor for quite a while on my SGS4G running CM9 (Team Acid's version, the final herring one), and I have just gotten used to the 12-14 hour battery life that I have had ever since I switched from GB back in August 2012. However, most of the frequent users here recommend the SMARTASSV2 governor, so I tried to use that yesterday to see if battery life was enhanced.
If anything it seems that my battery life got worse (see attached picture). I am a moderate phone user in general; I use my phone for texting mostly, and sometimes I'll look something up on the Internet, but no music, WiFi and GPS are always turned off, no overclocking/undervolting. I recently purchased a new battery as my old one died about two months ago.
I was wondering, is there any governor for the CM9 ROM that is particularly good with battery but doesn't completely drain performance?
(Also, I tried to use the LZ kernel before, but it seemed to cause many more problems than it fixed.)
You've got some pretty bad wakelocks going on there. See how your phone is awake even though your screen is off? That is an issue. Also how much screen on time did you have on that run? Get Better Battery Stats(free on XDA) then fully charge and look at what wakelocks are occurring. You might also want to consider UVing if you want better battery life.
Also, if you're a fan of ondemand, I highly suggest moving to ondemandX, which actually does deep sleep when the phone is off.
But that will only help if you fix the wakelocks first. So follow hechoen's advice and your phone should be way more awesome.
Downloaded BBS today, we'll see how it goes.
