Kingston Wi-Drive a great deal IMO - Nexus 4 Accessories

The Kingston Wi-Drive 32GB is now only $49.99 (that's a $130.00 reduction) at Amazon and Staples.com. I have one that I got hoping to use it with a new Nexus 4 but alas I couldn't get the Nexus 4 yet but the drive works great with my tablet and laptop I can access files via a web browser on my laptop wirelessly and with my GNoet10 tab I can stream media from the Wi-Drive and transfer files to and from the Wi-Drive wirelessly. BTW it looks a lot like the Nexus 4 and is just a little shorter .75" otherwise the difference in size is not enough to mention.

Looks great! Tempting to buy the 64GB one.:good:
P.S. WHY IT HAS THE STUPID MINI-B USB?? WHY CAN'T IT USE MICRO-B USB AS MOST PHONE USING TODAY.

Is it fast enough to stream HD videos?

Also can't you just use an otg cable and a regular external drive?

Is this like a hard drive with wifi so that you can use it anywhere? if so, do you just tether the WI drive with the phone and use it?

Watch the youtube video all questions will be answered. Ordered my Kingston wi drive 32 gigs for 58.21 with shipping and warranty.

This device rocks. Can't wait to get it. Hopefully my Nexus 4 order will show up in the next 2 weeks or so. This Nexus 4 order is in limbo. .
The Kingston Wi-drive is worth every penny even if I have to buy a prepaid phone till I get a LG Nexus 4.

I love how Engadget says the Wi drive works for Apple products. Like it doesn't work for Android.

It sounds like a great idea for an external accessory to have -carry in your car and stream music- but the specs say that it has a 4 hour battery life...

Not a deal breaker for me. I ordered one. I can always charge via USB at work, home, in my car etc.
Hopefully it streams higher quality video...if it does that I am pleased.

It is sold out at staples and amazon is no longer 49.99.

Got it yesterday. Should be here tomorrow.

I haven't tried that but from what I have read it is, and unlike some other media streamers it does not copy the file to your device it accualy streams the data.
There seems to be some confusion about using the OTG cable people say you can but I see a lot of people saying they can't.

It goes beyond that, in that with a regular hard drive with wifi when you are connected to the drive you do not have internet access. With the Wi-Drive you get a bridge that allows you to connect to the wi-drive and it passes your wifi connection through it to the internet wifi connection you choose.

From what I read it was designed for apple but accually works better with android because with android you can copy files in both directions wirelessly.

The WiDrive is awesome. I used it with my tablet to watch movies during the Hurricane Sandy blackout a few weeks ago. Charge them up in my truck and they are good to go for the next night in the dark.

Just received my 64g Wi-Drive that i bought on ebay for $107. My first impressions are that its very compact, smaller and about as slim as my S3. Had to pull the trigger at that price, especially now that i have an 8gb N4 as well. Will put it through the paces this weekend. Here is the link to the ebay seller, three available.

Can you connect to your WiFi network for surfing while you're connected to this drive from the same device?

HDMI link

Does anybody know if the dongle for HDMI that Amazon sells for the Galaxy 10.1 tab work with the Galaxy 7.0 plus? It plugs into the Samsung port, uses a power cord plug in and terminates in an HDMI for adding a HDMI cable between it and your Monitor. I see nothing for HDMI for the 7.0 plus and the specs say that it doesn't work with the old Galaxy 7.0. Definately need an HDMI adapter to stream videos to my big screen.
Yes, it should definitely works. Though don't know what kind of adapter Amazon sells, but original from Samsung works perfectly (all tabs except old 7).

Appreciate the response. Will order one tonight.
Keep in mind that you need to have the AC power adapter plugged in all the time into the HDMI cable or you'll get no signal. Kind of a stupid design that you can't use HDMI without also charging the tab at the same time. Unless someone has found an alternate HDMI cable that doesn't require power?
Got one the other day. Netflix is a bit wonky but ripped DVDs play great on our 42". Can also plug inta a monitor with hdmi for a great large screen experience.

Hopefully works and you enjoy it..
Just an update. Recieved my HDMI adapter. There were 2 available on Amazon. 1 for 39.95 which touted the fact that it was genuine Samsung and the other one which was 27.95. I ordered the 27.95 one and it was a factory Samsung adapter. Only difference was the price. Followed the instructions to the letter as far as connection sequence and it works perfect. I downloaded the app "World Streaming TV (News)" from the market and I get CNN live, CNN international, Fox News, Real News, Discovery Channel, BBC, MSNBC and a host of others. Basicly all the channels I pay Dish for now.
Immediately canceled my Dish Network and I'm saving 57.00 a month now. This tablet just paid for itself. I'm using a 15 foot HDMI cable I got from amazon for 13.95 and there is no loss of signal with the extended run. I also got the extra long power charging cable for 6.97. No problems there either.
I'm very, very happy.
FYI, The best streaming TV I found was the above mentioned World Streaming TV (News) Edition. When you first get it, you must go into preferences and check the box for onboard browser. The browser that comes with the app just shows a white screen with audio. I have Opera and Dolphin Browser and Dolphin Browser works best with this app. It seems to smooth out the Buffering the more you use it. When I first started watching it would pause quite a bit. After a couple hours that stopped entirely and the stream was smooth as silk. I left it on from 8AM until 10PM to test it and never had a stutter or freeze. It just worked.
Hope this helps any other 7.0 plus owners who were sitting on the fence about streaming to large screen through the Tab Plus.
Just for reference, my Broadband connection runs at 7mb so it's not really that fast by comparison.
Thanks for this reference and info, will try it soon.

I thought it was a Pogo Stick with no foot rests
Or, try the "Budget Version"
I thought this was another reference to pogo pins, LOL!
I have a 1 Tb Drive attached to my Cisco E4200 Router via USB. The management software that Cisco provides has an FTP Server provision. With that, plus an awesome app called "Folder Sync" from the market, I have essentially the same set of services, give or take a feature or 3.
I love the plug and play ease of this kind of solution, but price wise, it could be better. For example for the high end "Pogoplug Series 4" for $99, I would like to see at least SOME storage provided, as a start, say 100 Gb or so. Otherwise the value seems a bit less than some do it yourself solutions.
By the way, the Folder Sync app I mentioned truly rocks. You set up "accounts" using established services, such a DropBox or SkyDrive (Free 25 Gig), then set up "Folder Pairs" using any one of the services you added as accounts. As an example: All the files under "Documents" on my Primes internal storage get a daily sync with the FTP server/drive on my router. My phone does the same (you can get fairly granular, setting one way in either direction, two way, and scheduling options like crazy - no Push yet, but I think it's in the works.
Added in a subset of docs from my laptop and home PC's - I didn't want EVERYTHING going mobile, LOL! and I have all the stuff I need, when I need it.
Finally I have a mapped drive to the Router attached disk when I am on the hone network. It all works reliably, and cost nothing above and beyond the portable drive. Granted I already had a router that you can attach storage to, but most high end routers have one or 2 USB ports.
On ebay they sell for 70 dollars though. And in order to use a pogo plug device you need a USB port on your router
That's interesting. First I've seen of it.
And I mistook it as a reference to pogopins as well lol
I mean, I like to try out cloud services (I'm using Google Music and Dropbox) but have no real use for them other than the fact that they can alleviate bandwidth from my personal "cloud" storage I have hooked up through my PC. Most useful part about these kinds of services is the general reliability of their up-time: that is, my internet can intermittently crash depending on weather or just the general want of Zeus almighty, so those services will continue on even when my own cannot.
But, that's just it. I already have the setup running alongside my normal OS, so I don't need extra silly hardware.
However, I can see this being pretty useful in some circumstances, and can definitely see the general public kind of eating something like this up.
It would be faster and cheaper to build a low power computer and put freenas on it

Sounds painful. I use the Seagate GoFlex Home, which I believe uses HipServ software, but it works well. And it was only $99 for the 1tb drive and station.
I found that even the latest version of the device was too slow for most purposes. And then it recodes your videos to some really low resolution to stream it. I was really disappointed.
Will sell my pogoplug kit cheap to anyone who wants it if I can figure out how to detach the serial number from my account.

No, you do not need a USB port on your router as Pogoplug connect to router using Gigabit ethernet port.
Pogoplug is a cool device that can run Arch Linux Arm (http://archlinuxarm.org/) and only consume 5W of power. I just bought one from Amazon for $ 38 with free shipping.
I just have a netgear wndr3700 v2 running openwrt and a 2tb external. Worts perfect. I also have transmission running on it and have tied torrent-fu to it. Its perfect for downloading 'linux distros' and free movies on the fly and syncing them to my tablet, phone, and apple tv.

Well i just purchased the Pogoplug at Best Buy today, since it was on sale for $29.99. After trying to setup, it never recognized the USB drives and if I wanted to sync or backup my PC oand Mac, I have to purchase another software for $29.99. So it is going back tomorrow. Might try one of the other solutions.

MHL Issues

Have any of you gotten a chance to mess around with the HDMI functionality on the phone? I've bought a MHL cable from Amazon that got pretty good reviews (Amazon Link) and a Samsung 11 to 5 pin adapter and have noticed several issues with it.
Bad lag/frame skipping on emulators. Haven't gotten a chance to check it with every rom I have but running SMB3 with Nesoid on my big screen has been a let down.
Flash Player black screen cuts. Watching a video stream through Dolphin Browser HD, I sometimes get an issue where the feed keeps cutting to a black screen for a couple seconds then fixes itself for a few more seconds. Once this occur, there's no way I've found to get it to stop. Connecting it later seems to rid the problem temporarily.
All of this may be because I went the cheap route, but I'm interested if some of you have reached some success with the functionality of the device, maybe fared better with the official cable (w/o the adapter) or with another solution (preferably software )
I have the official $40 Samsung adaptor & it works perfectly.
This setup works much better than the HDMI/MHL adaptor I used for my Rezounds.
The Rezound was very touchy about connectiing (& I have 3 Rezounds & had the same connection problems with all of them). With the Rezound, half the time it wouldn't connect requiring at least one reboot etc.
The G3 connects instantly, 100% of the time. I have a car dock setup that automatically connects the G3 HDMI out to a HDMI scaler & displays the video on my in-dash 7" DVD/NAV screen.

SQ will be as good/if not better than your Nexus 4 and you will save on your Phone's battery also.
Would a WI drive work? Not sure how their companoin app works though.

what would be better is if they make a cable or adapter that allows you to plug in a flash drive. much more smaller to carry around in your pocket, backpack, car, or wherever.

The one you can buy from Samsung works. Keep your eyes open for a 50% off coupon.
you can probably get one from Monoprice.com pretty cheap. Just check to see if the microUSB end is a 5pin or 11pin. You may need to get a 5pin to 11pin adapter.
Confirmed a generic mhl adaptor will work with a 5 to 11pin adaptor. With or with out power cable. I keep a power cable on it because it drains more battery while playing
I had one that worked with my Note II and it works just fine with my note IV
So it looks like Samsung didn't mess with it this time.
I read some of the reviews for the Samsung mhl adapter ,lots of complaints about it not charging the phone fast enough and it stop working after a while. Guess I'll have to try it out thanks for the responses .
Do you need the 5 to 11 pin adapter with the Samsung mhl adapter?
I have the Samsung one and it's working great. It charges the phone enough so that the battery doesn't drain while the phone's connected. Don't get me wrong, the percentage may go up, but of course not as fast as if it were charging normally. And it certainly doesn't go down. So all in all, a worthy investment.

I just ordered the MHL 3.0 HDTV Adapter from Samsung's store and I think that may be what you're looking for. Unfortunately, I can't provide any user feedback for it myself because I haven't received it yet. Probably will once I do.
I think the reason why the Samsung MHL adapter has been getting bad reviews, particularly for the Note 4, is because they're using the MHL 2.0 adapter, which supports everything from the Galaxy S5 and older.
The MHL 3.0 adapter supports higher power charging and should be able to support the Note 4's power demands, as well as display out 1440p video, something the MHL 2.0 adapter can't do.
I'll report back on the Samsung MHL 3.0 adapter after I receive it (hopefully Monday, ordered it just this morning).
I'd post a link to the adapter but I haven't posted enough to have the permission to.
Also, like previously mentioned, there is a 50% coupon code out there. Apparently you were supposed to receive this when you registered your phone. I called Samsung's store support phone number about this and they confirmed the 50% off coupon does exist and that it may have gone to my Spam folder. After I told her that I may have accidentally deleted it (I try to review my spam folder before deleting but it is HARD when you receive hundreds), she was happy to do the order for me with the 50% off over the phone. I guess YMMV but just throwing it out there because it's possible. People from New York City interested in this, your total would amount to $31.51 after tax and shipping charges (via UPS 3Day/$3.95)
Edit: If you haven't registered your Note 4 with Samsung, do it and you will receive the 50% coupon code minutes after registering it. My coworker just did it for his Note 4 and got the coupon code via email.

I tried setting up chromecast using fox fi ( I don't have a home isp ) don't think its possible to set up without wifi.looks like a hard wired connection is the way to go.
Anybody use one of those HDTV adapters that have usb, sdcard spot and power area. It looks really cool.
Okay, so I finally got the official Samsung MHL 3.0 but I had to wait til I got back from work to test it out.
*********
Only tried it briefly, and it's exactly what I expected and yet kinda floored with the results after testing several wireless mirroring with my Note 4 lately.
If you need a video out display for gaming, where input lag needs to be non-existent, accept no substitutes, the MHL 3.0 adapter does the job like it's supposed to. I tried playing Secret of Mana with it and it feels just like normal console gaming. I don't have to play mind games with myself to convince myself that it's good because it is. Press left, you move left, right there and then.
*********
EDIT: I wrote the above earlier but I need to change my opinion on that after trying the adapter for a longer period of time. There *IS* STILL lag with the MHL 3 adapter. It's much shorter lag than any wireless solution for sure though... I'm talking in the microseconds BUT it's still noticeable enough to affect your experience. This was evident to me when I was playing Sonic The Hedgehog and depended on precision input to make jumps and avoid spikes and pits. At first I thought I was just playing real bad, but when I was playing while looking at the phone's screen instead of the TV I did just fine. I think it might be a framerate issue when projected to the TV. The gameplay just feels slower, inputs feel heavier. If you have a Game mode on your TV it will definitely help this issue and does lessen the lag, but the lag is still there. That said it's playable unlike with wireless streaming, although it's really compromised gaming. I don't recommend playing this way.
I can also confirm that Samsung's MHL 3.0 adapter *WILL* power up and charge the Note 4 while gaming (and I'm using a Dualshock 4 bluetooth controller too) when used with the stock charger. No charger is included with the adapter. No HDMI cable is included with the adapter either. You'll need to supply both on your own. If your TV has a 1.0A USB port or higher, it will also be able to charge your phone. 0.5A USB ports though (on older TVs) will NOT have enough power to keep up with the Note 4.
I was worried about the width of the adapter's USB connector since I use a case for my Note 4, but I'm happy to report that it will still be able to connect without the need to remove the case. I did have to wedge it in to get a secure connection to the microUSB port but it will fit. For reference, I'm using a Tech21 Classic Mesh case.
If you want to stream video, don't want to worry about dropped signal connections, and do not mind a (what frankly feels ancient now) tethered setup, this adapter will also do the job for you. Just be careful to get the MHL 3.0 adapter and NOT the MHL 2.0 adapter. The 2.0 adapter won't be able to keep up with the Note 4's battery discharge even when it's connected to a power adapter.
Beware though, if you're powering the adapter using the TV's USB port, it will NOT keep up with the Note 4's discharge it is an old tv because it most likely has a 0.5A USB port. If you use the charger included with your phone though you will be fine. It's not fast charging but it will charge your phone.
I can post up a YouTube video a bit later or maybe tomorrow.

If you're in the market for just video streaming, like previous users suggested, the Chromecast is a pretty good bet for now. Its specs are getting long in the tooth and there's rumors of a new version coming out in the relatively near future, but it still does an admirable and versatile for cross-platforming between Android and iOS if you own both types of devices. Since the Chromecast is dependent on a wifi connection (it won't work on a wired-only environment) its reliability will vary from user to user. For example, the Chromecast uses only single band wifi- the 2.4 range. I live in an apartment with TONS of wifi connections and the 2.4 is congested enough to take a performance hit. Wifi connections perform way better on 5.0 for me. That's why I experience disconnects sometimes on the Chromecast.
For gaming, the Chromecast does an impressive job when screen mirroring, but that 0.5 to 1 second lag is still noticeable and just not good enough for action gaming. It WILL leave you frustrated if you attempt to try it, and you will play like you totally suck at the game too if it's an action game. For slower games or turn based games, it will just test your patience and tolerance lol...
Chromecast's screen mirroring for gaming still performs better than a miracast connection with a Netgear PTV2000. The lag on the Netgear was just a lot more noticeable... maybe a 1.5 to 2 second lag?
For wireless video streaming, I recommend the Chromecast over standard miracast from a miracast receiver like the PTV2000 because on apps that support Chromecast, you can sling the video over to the Chromecast and still use your phone to do other stuff, and use other apps simultaneously. It may be the closest experience you can get to Apple's AirPlay on an Android device like the Galaxy Note 4. With a standard miracast connection, it's strictly screen mirroring. You can't multitask. If you close the video player on the phone, it closes on the wireless display/TV.
If you have a reliable local wifi connection and just mainly do video streaming not gaming, I recommend a Chromecast over the MHL 3.0 adapter solution. Going wireless is just so much better than having your phone tethered to the tv.
But if you are gonna go for the official MHL 3.0 adapter remember to get the 50% discount from Samsung's store. I think that would make it the best going price out there (24.99+ tax&shipping) for the official brand adapter. I don't recommend getting it for the full $50 though. That's overpriced as hell.
With the 3.0 mhl you can mirror correct? I want to watch xbmc lol

Okay, so I finally got the official Samsung MHL 3.0 but I had to wait til I got back from work to test it out.
With all that said, I can only wholeheartedly recommend the MHL 3.0 adapter for gaming-use only. If you want to stream video, don't want to worry about dropped signal connections, and do not mind a (what frankly feels ancient now) tethered setup, this adapter will also do the job for you. Yeah it can mirror. It's the only type of display out it can do. So your phone and your TV will be playing the same thing at all times. It's probably the most reliable screen mirroring option out there. But ask yourself this: Do you really want a wired solution?
For video streaming I actually prefer the Chromecast. It chokes up every now and then but the freedom of a wireless connection is so much better.

I can see where the MHL 3 adapter has its uses.
If you need a portable HDMI adapter solution for on-the-go presentations or video-out to an HDMI display, it's for you. It's more reliable than a Chromecast/Roku Stick/Fire Stick because it doesn't need wifi to work. You'll just need to supply the HDMI cable. It can also run on the phone's battery without a USB wall charger and display-out for as long as your Note 4's battery can hold.
I DON'T recommend the adapter for gaming though. It's a shame. It's so close but it just comes up short to fulfilling expectations.
In the end, for me, I DON'T think the MHL 3 adapter is worth it. Its original price is expensive and my Chromecast can do the same things wirelessly and better, and it's cheaper.
Buy a Genuine Samsung one. No doubt, that works 99% of the time.
Can confirm, just registered my phone even though I purchased it on 11/17/2014. Immediately recieved my 50% off coupon for an item less thn 50 dollars. Convienently enough, the MHL 3.0 adapter is 49.99 Out the door for $30.78. Thanks you guys for the heads up about registering. Now to find a coupon for a discount on the VR headset, lol.
