MHL Issues - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Have any of you gotten a chance to mess around with the HDMI functionality on the phone? I've bought a MHL cable from Amazon that got pretty good reviews (Amazon Link) and a Samsung 11 to 5 pin adapter and have noticed several issues with it.
Bad lag/frame skipping on emulators. Haven't gotten a chance to check it with every rom I have but running SMB3 with Nesoid on my big screen has been a let down.
Flash Player black screen cuts. Watching a video stream through Dolphin Browser HD, I sometimes get an issue where the feed keeps cutting to a black screen for a couple seconds then fixes itself for a few more seconds. Once this occur, there's no way I've found to get it to stop. Connecting it later seems to rid the problem temporarily.
All of this may be because I went the cheap route, but I'm interested if some of you have reached some success with the functionality of the device, maybe fared better with the official cable (w/o the adapter) or with another solution (preferably software )

I have the official $40 Samsung adaptor & it works perfectly.
This setup works much better than the HDMI/MHL adaptor I used for my Rezounds.
The Rezound was very touchy about connectiing (& I have 3 Rezounds & had the same connection problems with all of them). With the Rezound, half the time it wouldn't connect requiring at least one reboot etc.
The G3 connects instantly, 100% of the time. I have a car dock setup that automatically connects the G3 HDMI out to a HDMI scaler & displays the video on my in-dash 7" DVD/NAV screen.

I think you do need the real S3 adapter and wish Amazon would get rid of the generic MHL adapters that say they are compatible with the S3. My S3 MHL adapter works great.

That is great news, thanks for the replies!
Have you guys ran any games/emulators on it?

I know the price on it is a total rip-off but it does work perfectly (I have 2 of them, one built into my truck & one I use wherever else I need it)

HDMI link

Does anybody know if the dongle for HDMI that Amazon sells for the Galaxy 10.1 tab work with the Galaxy 7.0 plus? It plugs into the Samsung port, uses a power cord plug in and terminates in an HDMI for adding a HDMI cable between it and your Monitor. I see nothing for HDMI for the 7.0 plus and the specs say that it doesn't work with the old Galaxy 7.0. Definately need an HDMI adapter to stream videos to my big screen.
Yes, it should definitely works. Though don't know what kind of adapter Amazon sells, but original from Samsung works perfectly (all tabs except old 7).

Appreciate the response. Will order one tonight.
Keep in mind that you need to have the AC power adapter plugged in all the time into the HDMI cable or you'll get no signal. Kind of a stupid design that you can't use HDMI without also charging the tab at the same time. Unless someone has found an alternate HDMI cable that doesn't require power?
Got one the other day. Netflix is a bit wonky but ripped DVDs play great on our 42". Can also plug inta a monitor with hdmi for a great large screen experience.

Unfortunately, but that' s no big deal. All samsung tabs works only with power adapter plugged in (Note as well) through HDMI.

Hopefully works and you enjoy it..
Just an update. Recieved my HDMI adapter. There were 2 available on Amazon. 1 for 39.95 which touted the fact that it was genuine Samsung and the other one which was 27.95. I ordered the 27.95 one and it was a factory Samsung adapter. Only difference was the price. Followed the instructions to the letter as far as connection sequence and it works perfect. I downloaded the app "World Streaming TV (News)" from the market and I get CNN live, CNN international, Fox News, Real News, Discovery Channel, BBC, MSNBC and a host of others. Basicly all the channels I pay Dish for now.
Immediately canceled my Dish Network and I'm saving 57.00 a month now. This tablet just paid for itself. I'm using a 15 foot HDMI cable I got from amazon for 13.95 and there is no loss of signal with the extended run. I also got the extra long power charging cable for 6.97. No problems there either.
I'm very, very happy.
FYI, The best streaming TV I found was the above mentioned World Streaming TV (News) Edition. When you first get it, you must go into preferences and check the box for onboard browser. The browser that comes with the app just shows a white screen with audio. I have Opera and Dolphin Browser and Dolphin Browser works best with this app. It seems to smooth out the Buffering the more you use it. When I first started watching it would pause quite a bit. After a couple hours that stopped entirely and the stream was smooth as silk. I left it on from 8AM until 10PM to test it and never had a stutter or freeze. It just worked.
Hope this helps any other 7.0 plus owners who were sitting on the fence about streaming to large screen through the Tab Plus.
Just for reference, my Broadband connection runs at 7mb so it's not really that fast by comparison.
Thanks for this reference and info, will try it soon.

[Q] MHL to HDMI Adapter not working?

I've bought a Digitazz MHL To HDMI Adapter, but no mater which ROM I try, no matter whether I try to connect my Sensation to my laptop or my TV......nothing happens.
I don't get any notification on the phone, nothing on the TV...arghhh, the frustration.
I know the HDMI cable i'm using is fine, as links up to my freeview box ok, blu-ray player ok and my TV.
Phone is plugged in and show as charging when my phone is linked up to TV.....tried retarting phone, different Sense 3.6 Roms etc..nothing is working.
Am I not doing something, or it it prob just a case of cheap rubbish MHL to HDMI adapter I bought?
Just HTC versions of the adapter work?
any Ideas...be very much appreciated as i've tried everything.
cheers
Matt
Attached pics of the MHL to HDMI I'm using.
I used 2 types of non htc adapters, both worked.
What power supply did you connect to the adapter? I think only 1a 5v will work for mhl..

In some roms HDMI will not work. Look in change log it will tell you if it's working or not. Usually its written in BUGS section. Check your current Rom to see if it's supported . If I remember correctly most don't work but you need to check and see if that could be the issue.

MHL works on all the largely adopted roms, elegancia, ARHD etc.
Also, it's more a kernel thing than a rom actually.
The OP mentioned a couple of roms were tested. perhaps it would benefit the test to add stock as well just in case?

I'm also struggling with MHL on my Sensation. After searching the internet, the few tips I picked up that worked for others are:
1. You need to plug in power via the extra micro-USB port on the MHL adapter. Some have said that it needs a high-current power source (1A) which the HTC charger produces. 3rd party USB chargers sometimes output a lower current which some people find causes their MHL not to work. Also, using MHL seems to drain battery pretty quick and you need a high-amp power source to keep the phone charged or prevent it from draining too quickly.
2. If it is the first time using MHL, try plugging in the MHL(USB) to the phone then rebooting the phone. This is supposed to make your phone recognize and "activate" the MHL/HDMI capability(?).
3. I also read about playing around with TV settings. For one user with a Sony Bravia TV, he had to go to the tv settings -> external inputs -> HDMI and turn off HDMI device control or something.
4. Not all Sensation ROMs support MHL, for example CyanogenMod.
In my case, I bought a 3rd party MHL adapter and it didn't work the first time even with power connected to MHL. Then after (2) above, I finally saw the HDMI logo appear on the notification bar and it worked pretty well in my first 10mins of experimenting...nice picture with sound too. Then I tried playing another video and this time there was no sound from the TV. So I unplugged and reconnected the MHL connector from my phone and ever since then I have not been able to get MHL to work I'm using ARHD 3.6.1 ROM so I'm not sure if that is the problem. Still looking for solutions...
You might want to make sure that your TV actually supports MHL as not all do. I can't see how a laptop would support it, most don't even have a HDMI input?
The most trouble I've ever had with MHL is the sound sometimes doesn't work, but just unplugging then replugging the phone cures this.

I finally managed to solve my MHL problem by flashing ARHD 3.6.8 ROM...so in my case it seemed to be the ROM version that didn't work well with MHL. It mirrors my phone screen pretty well although Sensation resolution is quarter-HD so on my HD TV the picture is less sharp, but acceptable.

I have this same problem, my adapter works and shows on my phone that it connected but my TV does not support MHL as only certain TV's actually support this standard, and oh plus that fact that my current ROM doesnt support it
My Laptop has a HDMI connection and so does my HD TV....but didn't know the TV had to support MHL....I just thought it was a case of if it's a HD TV, with HDMI connections, then it would work?
Hmmm....I'm not getting ANYTHING in my notification area on my phone either though.
Gonna try some of these suggestions and will report back.
Ps: As far as Chargers and power sources etc...all mine are HTC Genuine ones.
Thanks for help guys....will be back soon, coz i'm off to experiment..hehe:laugh:

Hope all goes well in your test's, My process was to power up the adapter first using my genuine htc charger first then plus in the HDMI cable from the adapter to the TV then plug the adapter into the phone last. If it does not show up on the phone notification bar to begin with restart your phone with it all still plugged in failing all of that then time for a new ROM and kernel probably Good luck

Cheers for reply, but tried differerent Roms and kernels...nothing happening.
I give up.
Matt
I've got a similar problem where not matter what ICS ROM or kernel I used it wouldn't work.
(see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31797423&postcount=17)
However, in my case, it works fine with GB connected to a Sharp TV, but for some reason not ICS!
It also works fine with ICS connected to other TVs (tested on Samsung and LG) and on a PC monitor (through HDMI to DVI cable).
Just not with the Sharp TV!
Very frustrating!
hey guys, i have been trying to get this to work but all to no avail have tried the suggestions, all of the kernels i can find ect but i am just not having any luck. i am also not having any joy with usb-otg. could the 2 be linked?
Just a couple of thoughts. I've only skimmed the thread so I apologise if I'm repeating something mentioned earlier.
I can confirm that NRG's current EnergyROM which features a stock kernel and Sense 3.6 works with MHL (at the moment MHL doesn't work on any Sense 4 ROMs as far as I'm aware).
Also, I recently visited my folks and tried to show off some photos on their TV. For some reason MHL would only work on ONE of its four HDMI ports. I didn't have the time to figure out why, but there you go. Maybe those having difficulties could visit a tv shop and try plugging their phone into a variety of tvs for troubleshooting purposes.
Other things to note: On some TVs my MHL connection works at 720p and 60hz (which is good). On others it runs at 1080i at 24hz which makes for a crappy experience (jerky).
ICS ROMs have greatly improved performance when using MHL so steer clear of gingerbread.
MIUI ROMs should also support MHL (I've tried a couple).
Finally, I sometimes use a battery pack that I bought via Amazon to power the MHL connection when I'm out and about. If you decide to experiment this way, make sure you buy an external battery that has a 1 amp output per USB port.
I'm typing this with a bluetooth keyboard while my phone is connected to my tv, so it can work : ) I bought this MHL adapter: http://www.amazon.co.uk/FoneM8-MHL-Cable-microUSB-HDMI/dp/B0060Z8CYK

I've only tried USB on the go once, using a dedicated USB on the go cable for a Galaxy SII and a small externally powered four port hub in conjunction with Sebsatian FM's kernel and the most recent EnergyROM. I was able to browse a flash drive and connect a wireless keyboard and mouse. I couldn't really see the point as you can't use MHL at the same time, and you have to provide external power (unlike, for example, the Galaxy Note which will allow you to plug flash drives etc into the adapter without external power).

That's weird. Got any mates with MHL enabled phones you can try your adapter on? I hate problems like this, they drive you mad and you end up doubting pretty much everything you've tried. Seriously though, you do realise MHL only works on the third Thursday of the month and if you wear underpants on your head, yeah? Oh, and stand on one leg ; ) Good luck.
Other than trying that different tv at work and possibly a different HDMI cable and MHL adapter, I'm not sure what else to suggest.

i guess we shall see tomorrow :/ will be gutted if its the phone. just out of interest has anyone got this going on the XE version of the sensation? as this is what i have.
still, thanks for your input bruce said that he is going to look into fixing the mhl on his CMX nightly, so if we can get this going i will be in emulator heaven

LOL, you must work for the NHS or local government or something. Still, you made my girlfriend and I laugh : ) Maybe try a Currys or a Richer Sounds or something. There's bound to be someone in there with a decent smartphone, and there will be plenty of TVs to try too! If they haven't got a clue what you're on about, you might just educate them a bit ; )

[Q] RCA and HDMI cable question

I'm eyeballing either TV Video AV Cable for Samsung Galaxy Tab Note 10.1 or Samsung Galaxy TabTM HDTV Adapter for my Galaxy Note 10.1
My biggest concern is compatibility.
I checked on samsungs own site for the compatibility between the HDMI cable and the Note but it came up saying "NO" but I don't know if that's because they haven't tested it yet or it really is a NO. As for the RCA one, I'm aware I'll lose the awesome video output and will be watching it in SD, that's ok, the videos I have saved on it are from DVD so it won't get better than 720, what I'm more concerned about is "will it work"
anyone tested either of these and know the answer?
BTW: the Note is completely stock at this point

I bought the HDMI adapter, I believe it is the same one you linked to on amazon, official samsung adapter, but at frys electronics ( I had a $100 giftcard there from the sale hey had on the note 10.1). It has nice picture and audio as should be expected, and it is nice with apps like youtube with the user interface.
The only issue I found with it so far, and might be a deal breaker, is you need to have your charger plugged into the adapter at the same time for it to work. There is a slot to plug into right next to the input on the device. It seems like a nice feature at first so you can charge your device while watching netflix or whatever on your regular tv. BUT you NEED to have it plugged in in order for it to work, and I wanted to remove several cables and stuff. I got this adapter so I wouldn't have to worry about moving my laptop from my office to my living or bedroom to watch some tv, but it will be the same hassle it seems like with this.
I am considering returning it and going a different route that will better suite my needs of less wires.
Don't know about the RCA thing, but it seems like it might be a good route if it works.

USB c hubs, mhls/slimport adapters?

I want to get something to plug my g5 into an HDMI port, but so far I haven't found any conclusive evidence that the g5 supports mhl or slimport adapters. I've also seen some of those hubs for the macbook or chrome pixel, but I can't find any indication those would work either.
Anyone have any on hand that they've verified to work? Ideally I'd like a hub that has a USB 3.0 a port, HDMI port, and another USB c port for charging.
I bought a Cable Matters USB type C male to HDMI female, tried it out, feels like the LG G5 goes at 15 fps or at least lower than 24fps and my minimal testing confirms 2ch (nothing more than that) support, felt a little too disgusted with the quality (mind you, still played 1080p) and lack of overall resolution. I would definitely love to hear others input from other people with different products as well. I'm hoping it isn't like this with everything else.

I'd imagine (read, hope) that would just be a function of a cheap adapter. Due to the fact that the g5 can drive the vr goggles at a decent framrate, I would think 1080p 30hz would be no big deal for it.
I'm going to bite the bullet and buy one of those adapters off of Amazon. Specifically this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01BSJVY7Y/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A14L9DIA3NK9B0
I'll report back in 2 days when it gets here to let others know if it works.

Bad news
Well, only bad news. The g5 doesn't even recognize there's an HDMI port there. I'll fiddle with some settings but I have a feeling it's not going to work. The USB 3 port kept mounting/unmounting every few seconds, and when it did stay mounted, I only got transfer speeds of 2MBps. The charging worked though. 1/3 is a bad ratio IMO.
UPDATE!!!!1!1!1ONE!!!
So I'm slightly retarded, I didn't have the input on my stereo receiver set to the input the phone was on. Once I changed the input, it worked like a charm. It's 1080p 24hz and only 2 channel audio, but I think the audio is an Android limitation. Also I guess es file explorer just didn't like my flash drive cuz an actual portable hard drive worked great on the USB 3 port.

Awesome! I would be so down for this, but I have a surround sound setup and 2ch is something I can't get past, unfortunately. Have you tried the stock video app or VLC to stream for the audio?
I have streamed through the Google Cast, but sometimes my files would be too large over my network or the streaming apps like AllCast would only support some audio types, VLC can stream but its just too muffled and not that great over network.

Nah, I was using MX player, I'll try vlc or stock later and report back.
I have been considering that same one. Guess I'll go ahead and get one. Going to try a keyboard and mouse on the USB port. No reason just want to see if it works.

Way ahead of you, im typing this with a wireless logitech keyboard also mouse works great! I'd never actually used a mouse/keyboard with android before and im surprised at how nice it is.
Update: for those curious, it also suports USB hubs. I only tried a 2.0 cuz I don't have e a 3.0 hub. However multiple USB storage devices gave it issues, but I don't see why one would need more than 1 of those at any given time.
Per the developer website the G5 should have display port alternate mode (maybe only 2 channel) on the type C connector. Some of the mono-price adapters should allow you to use this but I haven't tried one yet.
For video out I got the cheapest usb type c to vga adaptor I could find on Amazon (the brand is Techvilla) and it works perfectly.

With that adapter can you charge while playing video?
For football season I normally find a working mobile version & then deal with casting to my TV, but the casting has been less then stable so if I can hard wire it would be awesome. Need to be able to charge simultaneously though to make it through a full day (even a normal non QC is good enough).

I used it last weekend, you can charge it while using it, but the percentage didn't actually go up. It stayed the same over the 2+hours I was watching. It may have just been my power source though (cheap battery bank). As long as you start with a decent charge you should be fine for extended periods.

sweet... holding the charge is good enough for me. Thanks for the reply
Anyone think Lindy MHL 3.0 will work with G5 if I buy micro-USB to type-c adapter?

Probably not as the G5's video out is slimport standard and not MHL. See link below:

Hi!
I own the similar noname adapter. It works fine, but sometimes it spontaneously disconnects. And i can't guess is it a problem in the phone's firmware or in the adapter itself.
Have you encountered this?
I have the Samsung Multiport Adapter for my Galaxy TabPro S, so I figured I could hook up the G5 to the adapter. The picture shows up on the TV, but I don't hear any sound. Need to try more when I've got more time. I'm also curious if passthrough charging and USB works... that'd be rather cool, though I don't know what I could use it for. Maybe run Kodi...?

Does Note 10 have USBC to HDMI?

Has anyone tried this or found any method of getting a HDMI signal from it?
Thanks
Steve
I'm a bit clueless about that but I took the usb-c cable that I use from my laptop to my external monitor and plugged it in to my Note 10 to see if anything would happen. nothing....
Hi thanks for your reply. So you normally use a USB-C to HDMI cable for your laptop to monitor connection but it doesn't work with the Note 10?
Bummer....
Tried yesterday to connect Type-C to 3,5mm Headphone adapter just because i still had it from my Mix 3 and even that doesn't work
Gosh that's weird. At least it has a 3.5 mm jack.
I have a cheapy Anycast Wireless/HDMI dongle that worked with my Mi9. When I get home, I'll try it out with my monitor and report back.

Thanks for testing it. I'm still away, but will check the Anycast HDMI dongle later this week and report back.
Cheers

Well I'm back now and have had a play, but can't get my AnyCast dongle to work. If I go into:
Setting/Connection & Sharing/Cast
and turn cast on, it scans for nearby devices but doesn't find any.
I've tried a few play store apps, including EZMira, but all say the device must not be rooted and mine is.
I did have it powered by the TV usb port, but also tried an external adaptor.
Has anyone got the AnyCast working with the Note 10?
Cheers
Steve
Next up was our new Amazon Firestick. The Note10 sees it, but won't connect to it.
Bummer
I tried the Amazon Firestick (V2/2019) today and it worked for some reason, but was intermittent. Eventually it magically worked, but full screen videos were choppy and sometimes the audio broke up. I notice that if I scrolled the screen, it was pretty laggy and once again, broke the audio up.
Then I changed the wifi on the Note 10 and Firestick from 2.4GHz to 5GHz and bob's yer uncle. Works fine with no delays, choppiness and audio is fine.
I've ordered another from fleabay as my wife gets upset when I plunder the TV for my projects. Can't think why....
I intend to use it with a PC monitor, so I'll be able to get the TV on it too. Life is good....
Well the fire stick arrived and it seems to work mostly fine. The old boot of a monitor I have doesn't have HDMI, so I used a HDMI->DVI adaptor which works.
The only issue is that the resolution is a little high and the monitor complains.
Is there any method of reducing the cast screen resolution that anyone knows?
Cheers
