need router recommendation-help - General Topics

Looking at either ASUS dual-band wireless-n-gigabit router ($129) vs Linksys N Dual Band Router 4500 i believe..Reviews are mixed for both..I want to go with the ASUS but some say it stops working or overheats...
so figured I'd pose the question to the forum with many experts as I am not.
we have 2 phones, 2 mac computers, and 1 smart vizio tv
are those devices able to run on the 5 mhz band?
appreciate the help

anyone? anyone?:crying:

If the ASUS you're talking about is the RTN-66U Dark Knight, then the ASUS is what you want. If that's not the one you're talking about, it should be. Trust me, this router obliterates everything else on the market right now. There's no over heating issues, signal range is amazing, and wireless throughput is excellent. This is the first router that ive actually been able to use the 5ghz band on too. I recommend this router to all my friends, 2 of em have went for it, and now recommend it to others. Linksys is good, but their quality has dropped over the years, and their UI has gotten worse too. The RTN-66U is a safe bet.

HP Mini 311 or Acer Aspire One?

Hey guys, I'm planning to buy a netbook not laptop, and those two are my choices but can't decide.
Google the specs.
I want to use them for daily use, school project, internet and gaming.
Can those two runs game like the Sims 3? Or at least the Sims 2, can it play Dota?
Are there any other netbook that you recommended with similar price? Or maybe a laptop

I would get the HP Mini, my wife has one and it is a fast little computer. She plays bejeweled, Sims 2 (I think, not sure) and does all her school work on it so I would go with that one if I were you!
Good luck on your decision and let me know how it all went down...lol

[Q] USB Tethering - Android phone to Android Tab?

I have a Tmobile G2 and may be getting an Android tablet soon, a Toshiba Thrive is at the top of my list.
Is it possible to tether an Android tablet to an Android phone, by USB cable for internet access? The goal is to avoid being charged for tethering, and I think it should work the same way for Tmobile & AT&T - USA. I assume WIFI tethering is more of a problem - avoiding the tethering charge.
Thanks!!!
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
I don't know if you can use the USB tethering, but I do the following:
I've got an Creative ZiiO 7" which doesn't support 3G. So when I'm in a area without WiFi but with network coverage, I connect my ZiiO with my Desire Z via the Portable Wi-Fi hotspot.
I don't know if it's a useful data point, but I just got a ASUS SL 101 running Android 3. So far it is refusing to work with USB tethering, though the WiFi tethering is working most of the time. Both of these are with an HTC Aria (which is a different sad story, but my contract still has a year on it). I don't yet know what is the problem with the USB tethering. I checked with salesmen in several stores and they thought that USB tethering would work with Android tablets, but they might be wrong, or there might be something wrong with the ASUS device. I regularly tether the phone to Windows 7 and XP and also to several versions of Ubuntu Linux. The phone has problems, but the tethering usually works okay.
P.S. By the way, overall I am not that favorably impressed with the ASUS SL 101. I hope I'll grow into it, but...
P.P.S. I looked at the Toshiba Thrive you mentioned. It seemed to have some nice points, but I just didn't like it that much. The store where I made the purchase had about 10 different tablets, and as of today, I rather think the Sony might have been the one I should have gone with.

recommendations under $100

Hey guys,
I'm looking at getting my first android stick pc.
I basically want to use it to browse the net, stream movies and episodes off my network (wifi),
I've looked at the MK809III and the CX919.
Is there any preference from these 2, or something better in this price range.
I need pretty decent WiFi strength as my router is a fair way away.
Any advice would be great.
The CX 919 has great reviews and it has also a WiFi antenna

hi waxtah,
if you tell me how you're going to mosty use the stick I can suggest you some of those.
eg, do you plan to use it mostly for media purpose?
do you plan to make a mini-server out of it?
this has ethernet built in (can't paste url right now, see pm)
also you pretty much can add an ethernet port to any stick which has usb support by using an usb-to-ethernet adapter,
I've used some of these and they work just well,
I'm using a CX-919 with an usb-to-ethernet adapter, basically I've made a full blown media/torrent server
jynjbox
i like my jynxbox android tv
The CX919 looks good so far. Has anyone compared the WiFi on this to the Tronsmart MK908? If it is similar then i may get that one as there seems to be more support/software available for it.
Also, with all the air mouse/remotes available, is there a decent recommended one that people commonly use? Not a super expensive one, but not a cheap nasty one either. I dont know if i want a keyboard one or not yet so if you could recommend a good one with and without keyboard, that would be great.
Thanks

basically i want watch movies. and maybe play games. I'm afraid wifi can not be stable for movies. Jesurun looks perfect and price very good. I think it good choice for me. Thank you.
I just got my cx919 yesterday. Fired it up and it was extremely fast. Tried netflix and dlna and playing xvid, mkv, off USB thumb drive . All played well with no hiccups. The only thing I did not care for was the stock ROM. So flashed bobs Finless JB 4.2...Was a bit of a pain to install drivers. BUT got it done and now rooted and no issues with apps from playstore. Have had no issues with wireless. I am going to refresh however as with Finless rom. You get choices on how large you want the partition for apps to be. I had a problem trying to choose the 4gb choice. So I got stuck with the 2gb partition. Yuck. But thats my fault. Overall this little device has handled everything well. I also got a cheap air mouse_kb to go with it. 23 bucks. Total for all was 103. Now. I made my purchase through Amazon. So to have a little peace of mind. Cost me 20 bucks more. But I felt more secure knowing I had some backup if something went wrong. That is purely my choice and opinion. Anyway I love this thing. BTW. Most games play well too. I still have to get a BT controller though. But I have not read of anyone complaining about BT on bobs ROM...at least.

Nvidia Shield and Virgin Media Super Hub

Hey all, I just got my Nvidia Shield, I wanted to find out whether anyone uses on with Virgin Medias Super Hub? The specs can be found here - it looks like it should have no issue to do gamestream? Can anyone confirm before I upgrade from the V1 Superhub? (£50 for the V2).
Or would I be better off with the Asus RT-N66U? (£100).
http://store.virginmedia.com/broadband/wireless-broadband/super-hub.html
Thanks for any help/advice!
I've tested it out and on 2.4ghz it works surprisingly good! It has the option for 5ghz but I lose signal downstairs so I had to leave it.. Hopefully the new version should not have this issue as it has more antennas.

[Q] List of mobile phones that support 5Ghz WiFi

Hi,
I been looking for a list of the latest devices that support the 5Ghz band . I've found an old list from 2012 but am struggling to find a compressive list. I was just hoping someone had a source or even a way i could quickly and easily get one together without going through every device on GSM Arena or PDADB as that would take.... forever.
Cheers in advance
No one at all.....
Looks like its that hard way or no way
My S3 LTE from 2012 does...
I found a list on the bottom of the page here - http://mostly-tech.com/tag/dual-band/ - and this article was written in Jan 2014
Besides that most places say that all newer phones these days have dual band.
Also, the 2nd last post here - http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1201813 - says that:
"'a' is always 5 ghz.
'b' and 'g' are always 2.4 ghz.
'n' is defined for both.
I've never seen anything that supports 'a' that doesn't support 'n' on 5 ghz, though they don't necessarily support all the 5 ghz channels. "
Not sure if that is correct or not but though I'd share what I found.

Thanks for that,
The first list you said is a copy of the original i found from 2011/2012 but as you said, Most phones do have it now. The problem i have is i'm doing all the latest phones (HTC,Samsung,Sony etc etc) and their radios (2G/3G/4G). It's quite a list already and this was just an extra element that would be nice to have added. GSM Arena helped the most as all i need search for is 'dual band' on each varient of each phone and that does the trick. A little laborious but i'm almost there now to be honest. Here is an example of a (VERY) small segment of what i have just showing the problem with having so many different variants of the same phone (Formatting isn't great as its from a excel document 500 rows and over 30 columns wide) just showing 2G, which is easy compared to 4G (FDD-LTE Vs TD-LTE & ALOT more radio frequencies) but its come together nicely, Even if it has taken a while to compile all the information into something manageable.
*FIrst Line is if its 5Ghz or not (i.e- V CDMA & V320e models DO NOT when the others do)*
5Ghz Wi-Fi Make Model 2G
850 900 1800 1900 CDMA
Y HTC One SV C525e Y Y Y Y N
Y HTC One T-Mobile Y Y Y Y N
N HTC One V CDMA N N N N Y (800/1900)
N HTC One V T320e Y Y Y Y N
Y HTC One VX Y Y Y Y N
Y HTC One X LTE / One X Y Y Y Y N
Y HTC One X S720e Y Y Y Y N
I think its safe to safe 4G is a cluster F**K when it comes to the radios in phones! Chuck CDMA & TD-SCDMA in there for good measure and it's all a....... mess if im honest. Still, GOt there in the end

Yeah you're right, its insane now with so many different specs! This is a hard, but great project you are on. If I ever come across any more info on this I will send it your way. If you can, then please do share the list on xda once it is complete! Good luck!
Cheers for the support. I'm actually working on it for a Mobile phone company in the UK so releasing the information is really unlikely as i'm doing it more as a tool for us to use. Releasing it in the end will give others the advantage that we currently have over all other places in the UK and worldwide TBH.
I believe that all information should be free and out in the wild but unfortunately what i think doesn't matter when it comes to things like this. If we want to carry on being on the bleeding edge we have to do a lot of hard work like this to keep the competitive edge.
If t ever does come to be that i can release the information, Be sure it will be here. THe XDA Developers conference was pretty good in London the other week also and had a good time there. THinking may go next year too hoping it will be in europe somewhere
Thanks for the help

I'm familiar with this issue, as I've got a lot of what you need but can't share it without generously pissing of Deutsche Telekom(T-Mobile) and Samsung.
Truthfully I never saw how such a document of already freely existing information could be instrumental in having an edge over the competition. It's more a case of 'THAT'S MINE!' from the boys in charge. But I digress, nothing we can do about it.
All I can add is that pretty much all high-end Samsung phones from the S3 onward support 5Ghz. (barring a few possible market-based exceptions.)
A, N and AC protocols are all 5Ghz-capable.

TBH, the company i work for does work for everyone, We just do things in a 'grey' manner. We have very good R&D and Reverse Engineering team and this list just makes it easier for us to quickly find answers for our customers. We also do laptops and are heavily involved in BTC mining with Cointerra & KnC Devices. Cointerra's and the latest KnC stuff is SHOCKING though, Life support from day 1 and we suspect that the KnC Titan as a problem with the actual Chip :/ We plan to put them in Mineral oil and cool them that way. SHould be fun
TBH, its an awesome company to work for.

Mmm, up to a point - 11a and 11ac are 5GHz by definition. 11n is not a frequency spec though, so you have quite a lot of 2.4GHz-only access points around that are n-compliant. Lots of phones are b/g/n for example.

I'm looking for information on this too, particularly for the off-brand Androids you'll see on eBay etc. Most spec sheets merely say b/g/n, in fact it's rare to find one that mentions 11a.
Yet of the half-dozen b/g/n phones I've bought in recent years, two supported 11a even though it was not on their spec sheets. (They were the ThL 2015 and ThL 5000.)
