Is there an app or widget that let's you use the spend (or finger for that matter) to scribble on the desktop wallpaper?
That would be the ultimate post it note. Or an invisible Snote widget would do it, too. Kind of disappointed the Snote widget is just a mini library.
Whiteboard Pro.

Don't buy white board pro, I would like to do the same as the op but white board pro doesn't even have a widget, that was really poor advice especially as it is not a free app.
I am using sticky notes , which has a neat postit style widget, you can't draw on the widget directly but you can use the spen and the widget displays the hand written note exactly as you write it in the main app.
Give it a try, there's a free version

"... white board pro doesn't even have a widget, that was really poor advice especially as it is not a free app." - Really? Poor advice? OP asked for an app to write on desktop, I mentioned an app (with widgets) that does the job. What's poor is your reply without knowing what you are talking about. Have you really looked at it? The whole point of that app is the widgets. Whiteboard has multiple widgets, for every size and taste. You can write directly on desktop, it's one of the options. Try the free version if you don't want to pay for it.
This is from the description of free version:

Well based on your post I bought the app as I want the same functionality as the op, as far as I can see there are no widgets, I spent a good while looking for them too.
Perhaps there is some confusion with versions or similar sounding apps or somthing

This is first time I'm trying to add an image. I added a widget to screen, clicked on it, in settings under "Other" selected "Edit on home screen". You write on desktop, while within the widget.

In my post above I have a link to free version in market. It has 3 widget sizes (paid version has many more). if you're using Nova or any other launcher, widget size is not important, you can re-size easily.
I don't know where the confusion is coming from. I had purchased this many months ago, hadn't installed on my Note. Only today I installed, went to "add widget", added one to screen, wrote on desktop and then saved it as a note on desktop. See my screen shots in a post above.

Maybe the confusion is because (as it looks to me) you are talking about "Widget Notes - Whiteboard Pro" and not about an app called "Whiteboard Pro" ...

I followed the directions - each time I've tried it - when I click on the widget it takes me to an app screen not the desktop, to enter info in a very small area. After entering info it takes me to the desktop, but I still cannot write or add text to the desktop widget screen. This not a true desktop you can scribble on.

You can see from my screenshots I was writing on desktop, on Note 10.1, using the s-pen. When I finish, it shows it in a small widget on the desktop (with white background in my example). if I click on that widget again, it takes me back to desktop where I can edit the note.
I don't get the "enter info in a very small area" part. Even when not writing on desktop, widget fills out the whole screen, I can write easily. Sorry, I don't know how to help.

You could try this:
1. add the smallest size widget, 1x1, to your desktop.
2. click on it, by default it opens white screen to type or to write. Go to \Settings\Other, select "Edit on home screen", save. It closes the widget.
3. now on your home screen click on your 1x1 widget again. Your whole desktop becomes your writing pad, type or write.
You can add more pages within the widget, when needed.
I can add screenshots to show what I mean.
There's Snap Pad Free on Samsung market. It's a scratchpad that can be called up by tapping your chosen side of the screen, and when open it's a translucent layer.

#2 "Settings, other, "Edit on home screen""doesn't exist in the free version. This explains why I've never understood the hype over the app. I did make it transparent, which is fine, but still could only edit from the app interface.
Thanks again.
After reading this thread I've tried both Snap Pad Free (SamsungApps) and Widget Notes - Whiteboard Pro (Google Play).
I think they are both interesting and worth's trying out.
Snap Pad Free is very basic but it has the SPen pressure sensitivity feature (but no palm rejection). That's very good for our GNote 10.1
Widget Notes doesn't have it (too bad!), but it's more advanced and allows keeping multiple notes (maybe in a dedicated home screen), each with its settings and the possibility to have multiple pages)
Thanks for the heads up

Hey, got some free time, just jog down some short cuts using our keyboard docks...If anyone knows any, please do post. Have fun...
Format: hold down "Search" key and tab a letter key will launch certain apps
example: hold down "Search" key and tab the "E" key will lauch email app.
Search key itself is to launch Google now.
e=email
p=google music
a=calculator
l=calendar
c=contacts
b=stock browser
m=maps
alt+tab=recent apps
To turn the screen on using the keyboard dock: Go to Settings->Asus customized setting-> look under Power management and unchecked :MobileDock Battery saving mode. To turn the screen on, hit any key on the keyboard.(I used "space bar")
Have fun..If you don't like to use them, I don't need your comments. If you have something to contribute...please DO. Thanks.

try to hold down Alt key then hold down tab key without let them go, and when you want to select certain app, just release the tab, but keep holding down the alt key, then tab the tab key to navigate through. Good luck!
Had you used the search function, you would have found several threads listing far more shortcuts than you do. They go back to early July, and January, respectively, for:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1761782
and the shortcut list reported in the Prime forum here the above one is partly based on:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1435242
Nothing new in here, I fear.
EDIT: they're not exactly the only threads on this subject, probably due the fact the list never made it to a sticky. My post probably comes about as being angry or irritated -- I'm not. I'm just preventing people from reinventing the wheel (and thinking they are pioneering in the process ).
It would be nice if there were some sort of users manual that at least lists all these search+key functions that can be used anywhere in the system. The menu+ combos are nice, but they're per-application.

yes, I agreed that search+key is more useful and practical for day to day usage (quick launch). Others, I don't think people want to bother with them.
If you download Any Cut for Android and install it, then run it, then create a short cut for the activity "Quick Launch" (there may be two entries, if it doesn't work with the first one, try the second one), then using this "Quick Launch" short cut, you can define any program to be run using the hotkeys Search+(a-z,0-9), ie. Search+Z could be used to run Marvin.
external keyboard info
For what it is worth, I just discovered something people probably already knew. On an external keyboard the Win key acts as a search key. I never freaking knew that. If you have a menu key, it also works as the dock menu key. Surprisingly some of the media buttons on my USB dell slim media keyboard also work. Volume, mute, track skip, pause, browser back/forward, calculator. The email and media player buttons might work as well for someone with stock apps, but I disabled my gmail/email and google media players so they do nothing for me. The VERY surprising key is the web/home button... the one with a house on it. It actually takes me to the home screen. Anyway, just some FYI.
Thank you , grear post, have

shortcuts and documentation
I am sure glad that I stumbled across this thead.
I was looking around for some documentation for the dock/keyboard for my TF700T.
Is there anything the documents how to get the most of the keyboard.
I wonder about altering the existing shortcuts as well as all the other questions that I have about using it effectively.
There are some quirks in it, but I assume that future driver/firmware enhancements will help those items.
Thank you to everyone contributing to this thread. I hope that it will become a sort of warehouse for getting the most out of the keyboard.
Thanks,
Jon

I've noticed that this setting does not survive a reboot. The option will still be selected, but not actually honored. You will need to de-select and re-select for it to start working again.
Tired of moving your fingers up/down your tablet to switch applications? Try out TasKarou!
TasKarou is a multitasking launcher overlay.
Taking inspiration from the 'Quick Controls' feature in the android browser, TasKarou provides a multitasking layer on top of a launcher for phone and tablets.
By swiping anywhere on the left or right edge of your device screen, you can activate TasKarou's UI, giving you access to a quick, smooth, and intuitive interface to facilitate app launch, transition, and management for the user
The user interface brings a more responsive, and enjoyable level of interaction to your device.
The app is available in the android market: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ne0fhykLabs.home.taskarou
Notes:
To use TasKarou, set it as the default home launcher, and from TasKarou's settings, select the actual home launcher you want to overlay.
TasKarou user interface is then triggered by swiping from either the left of right edge of your tablet screen, while still allowing access to the overlaid home launcher through the home button.

It should be possible, but unfortunately, I lack the resources to pursue development in that area (lack of devices running GB).
If someone has the knowledge, and the resources, I might consider open sourcing the app to allow development in that area.
I installed the app on my rooted Kindle Fire HD running ADW Launcher. It was nice to finally have multi-tasking/task switching ability on the tablet. Unfortunately had to uninstall it because it kept on causing failures with App Protector Pro - which I rely on more than task switching. When a new version comes out I'll try again.
Otherwise, great app!

I should mention that the error only occurs if you somehow try to avoid entering the password such as hitting the cancel button or the back button.
HI!
I've been using this app for a week now, and love it.
I have some suggestions that might be useful:
-I have a galaxy note 2 and it's quite difficult for short fingers like me to reach back/menu buttons when operating with one hand. Could you please, please, pleeease add them?:fingers-crossed:
-Also it would be awesome to customize menus. For example, I don't use the options buttons quite often as I use 15 toggles toolbar, and the lower menu is easier to access with my thumb than the upper. That's where I'd locate home, menu and back buttons (if added), but maybe another person that's using a tablet likes the way it is now. Customizable buttons would solve this problem, so anyone could move/add/remove the buttons as he prefered.
-When using Google Chrome and swapping between tabs,it's necessary to move your finger horizontally from the border of the screen, and taskarou is launching when doing this. Perhaps you could implement an additional way to launch it by moving the finger vertically along the border of the screen.
-Last, It would be great to have the possibility to add a shortcut to any application, so you could quick launch your most used apps.
Well, perhaps all of this is asking too much but you would make me sooo happy if you could implement the first suggestion
Hey ne0fhyk,
Could you add customisation to the buttons?? So that you can replace them with whatever you want, I would really like the back home and applications button, also a time overlay on the corcver of the screen when the launcher is activated would be aweomse
I just wanted to add my vote for the ability to customize the menu..
I like the idea, but would prefer to be able to use the existing default screens for multitasking, app drawer, etc.
Perhaps this could be accomplished similar to other apps / lauchers that have an intent / activity / application browsers to make shortcuts (NovaLauncher / QuickShortcutMaker are good examples from the Play store). Perhaps there could be a nested ordered list of menu items in the settings with support for drag and drop to arrange shortcuts, and add new shortcuts
After basic customization is available it would be nice to see support for Automation app API's to create shortcuts to actions from Tasker, AutomateIT Pro, etc
Thanks for listening!
All better!

Thanks for the suggestions. I just pushed an update that add back, and menu shortcuts for rooted devices.
For the next update, my focus is to add the ability to customize the menu. That update should have the rest of the features you suggested.

Your first suggestions have been implemented, and should be available in the app, starting with version 3.2.
Your next suggestions are on my list to get done for the next update!
Sorry for the delay, but because of work, I do not have as much time to spend on this application as I wish. The app is open source though, so if you are a developer, or know interested developer, feel free to pitch in
Please, add shortcuts, last (previious) app, widget panel (from CM roms), open notifications and more hardware keys, like play\pause, volume and others.
Add second (inner) row for regular buttons, while outer row will act the same as now. If this will be implemented, than the outer row can be used in a whole new way. Swiping to the one of it's buttons and taking off the finger will start an action, binded to this button, but if you swipe and hold (with adjustable hold timeout), you'll get an access to submenu for the button.
I would also love to see black list for apps, such as drawing app ArtFlow, which is using screen borders to access tollbars.
I've just installed this app to use it instead of SlimPie in my Slim Bean rom, and I've already bought it, cause I like it's idea. Though, it's less responsive still, compared to LMT or SlipPie.
Keep up the good work.
Stunning work my friend
What are the power consumption repercussions of this? There would be two launchers running and active rather then one.

I tested it on several devices, and it doesn't affect battery life at all. While it's idle (not being triggered by the user), TasKarou launcher only background activity is to keep the trigger edges active, which allows it to consume very little cpu activity while in the background.

Anyone who was hoping to be able to use the new launcher (such as myself) will be happy to know that you can! It appears that the option is there in the 4.2 OTA update, it is just hidden from the settings menu. I assume that Asus are probably still working on it and will release it in a future update.
The only modification I made to Droid-Eye's method was to simply use a setting shortcut widget rather than an entire launcher option such as ADW.
I used 'Secure Settings' from Google Play, which is free. Please bear in mind you also need an Ipack for an icon for your shortcut. Luckily Secure Settings has a handy link to download free ones from Google Play when you are setting up your shortcut.
I hope it helps anyone desperte to try out the new launcher style. It seems many people hate the new launcher, and I'll admit that I did myself the first time I saw it. However, it has grown on me and I'm going to give it a run to see if I like it over the old style. I can always change back...for the moment anyway.
Note: There is no need to be rooted or unlocked to do this. You can always change back to previous launcher by setting up another shortcut widget in the new style launcher. Your tablet will need to restart to make the change, that is normal.
Screenshots.
As Droid-Eye correctly pointed out, the home soft button doesn't line up with the app draw button. I haven't found any other bugs yet.

The instructions worked well for me. So far I keep looking for the buttons in the wrong place. But overall the tablet seems snappier with this launcher. I also do like that the notifications shows across the top so you can see a lot more of the text.

I didn't even think about giving this its own thread. Hopefully, more people will consider trying the new layout now instead of just sticking with the status quo. I know not everyone will prefer them but it's always better to have the choice (I mean, this is Android after all).
Thanks for the credit.

Thanks, man. I've been playing around in the activities shortcuts since I first got my brand new (at the time) Moto Droid with 2.0.1(to give you a time frame). I've found all kinds of cool stuff that way and it's nice finding solutions that don't require root once in a while. I highly recommend combing through the system activities if only just to see if there's anything hiding, waiting for a later update. This is how I found Face Unlock before they were ready to give it to us, too (though it took some interesting hoop jumping to get it to actually work). Also how I found the stock android dialer so I could try it wwith different SIP clients (still a work in progress).
Anyway, dig through the activities. Guaranteed you'll find something to play with in there.

Maybe check the tf300 threads (since they're the only other ones with this ability) and see if anyone's found a workaround for it. If it's happening for them too and there isn't a fix, I'm sure GMD will want to know about it so it can be fixed before the rest of the tf700 and tf201 communities run into it. Either way, keep the shortcut handy and you can always toggle back whenever they update the app.

The setting is there, just the Secure Settings tool is less than intuitive. Keep looking around at the tool. I had to look at the sample picture in the second post several times before I figured out what it was showing. I'll post instructions later in the evening when I have time if no one else does.

After you have selected to create a widget using secure settings, pick an app, wait, and select settings. Next, you can click the .settings textfield. That will bring up a long list where you have to pick the .settings#launcherSwitchSettingsActivity. (Almost at the end of the list) Save.
Give the shortcut an appropriate name, pick an icon, and save the shortcut.
Just install Nova launcher.

Back of of Secure Settings and go to your Home screen. Go into the app drawer and tap the Widgets tab. Find the Secure Settings widget and long-press to add to your Home screen. Then, follow the rest of the directions.

Very nice! Thanks.
Is it possible to disable the collection of opened apps and web pages that comes up when you hit the square at the bottom right hand of the screen. It's really irritating to go through having to delete 20 or so screens. If I want an app, I can click the icon and open it. Arghhh!
My apologies if someone just point me to a link. I've looked and haven't been able to find anything.

I am not aware of a way to disable it.
FYI, it's called "recent apps", or just "recents".

By web pages, are you referring to tabs from chrome browser? If so, there is a option in chrome to disable showing open tabs in the recents screen
Please let me know If that didn't answer your question
Thanks but I'm not using chrome. It's really very insecure. You can be checking your bank account for example and if you leave your phone available someone can pick up all sorts of info about you by just looking at the web page (in my case dolphin) or apps you've had open. I know it was meant as a convenience, but it would be nice to be able to shut it off.

That's exactly what I want. I want to be able to turn off recents or overview or whatever it is called so that when I touch the square button nothing happens
If it's not possible currently I hope someone from the Android development team is listening and gives it some thought.

It's been in Android for a long time, and it's going to stay. It's a core part of the Android workflow. Removing the functionality is near-impossible, but one could make the button do nothing or set it's visibility to gone.
I recommend you just maybe log out or close anything you deem important enough to be a reason for wanting to disable this functionality. It's just a swipe away. Otherwise, you might as well leave it open as the foreground task and complain that it doesn't close it every time you turn on the screen while you're at it.
Thanks. Just have to live with it I guess.
Turn any widget into a screensaver!
Android has a native screen saver option (yes, I also forgot about that) that was called Daydream before Daydream VR was a thing and is now just called "Screen Saver".
I was surprised not a single screen saver app allowed you to put a widget inside the screen saver, so I quickly whipped up this app to do exactly that.
Now you can reuse that old tablet or phone (with Android 4.2+) as a night stand with your favorite widget for instance!
You can also show your calendar, the latest news, the location of your friends (see my Magical Location Clock app!), or use one of those apps where you can completely design a widget yourself.
The ecosystem is the limit!
The app has burn-in protection, support for multiple widgets, profiles and Tasker support for switching profiles, along with several other settings.
If you have any suggestions, please let me know!
Frequently asked questions:
Widget Screensaver doesn't work?
Please explain what's not working so I can fix it. If any crashes occur, submit them so I can see them and if not, please tell me what does work and what steps you've taken until the problem occurs.
Widget Screensaver doesn't work for this widget?
Please tell me which widget suffers from the problem (with screenshots and link) so I can try and fix it.
Widget Screensaver doesn't work on my Huawei/Honor device running EMUI? I only see default screensavers!
Unfortunately this is due to Huawei blocking third party screensavers. Check this post from XDA for a workaround: https://www.xda-developers.com/how-...ver-on-huawei-and-honor-devices-running-emui/
The command to use is "adb shell settings put secure screensaver_components nl.jolanrensen.widgetscreensaver/.WidgetScreensaverService"
Can Widget Screensaver be used as always on display or when not charging?
While things like detecting when the screen is covered don't work, it is possible to start the screensaver anytime the screen turns off using Tasker (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.dinglisch.android.taskerm). Check out this profile I made: https://taskernet.com/shares/?user=...&id=Profile:Start+Screensaver+When+Screen+Off
For more help you can visit the XDA thread or email me at [email protected]
I'll try to respond as quickly as possible, but it's just me, a student with a hobby, so forgive me if I cannot always respond immediately.
You can download the app from XDA labs at https://labs.xda-developers.com/store/app/nl.jolanrensen.widgetscreensaver or at the Google play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nl.jolanrensen.widgetscreensaver

Thanks for the feedback! I agree it's a bit distracting to look at currently, I'll see what I can do
On another note I see some crashes can still happen, so I've gotta fix those too
This can be way more cool if there somehow mod to enable screensaver any time, like always on display, not only on charger or stand wall.

What you can do perhaps is use Tasker and an app like Daydream launcher to start the screensaver even when you're not charging.
Is this useable only when charged? And if not, is it not battery consuming?

The native android screen saver feature is only running while charging or docked. So yes, this is only running while charging.
Great project!!
One feature to consider is an option to disable the click-action(s) of the widget itself.
For a music-widget it is great, that I can pause/resume while staying in screen saver (! unintended gem !)
But for a calendar/agenda-widget, I might not want my agenda to open.
Again great project, coffee on its way to you or a Grolsch

Don't worry, the touch on the widget was intended haha, I'm making a widget currently that animates upon touch so I needed it. But I like the idea being able to turn it off, so it's going in my to-do list
And thank you very much

I think you figured out the answer!
---------- Post added at 08:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:28 PM ----------
This tool is totally incompatible with KWGT. I think the issue is that you need to click the widget to configure it and clicking on widgets with the screensaver active is making it impossible to interact with whatever pops up.
I think the screen saver needs to be turned off before sending the click to the widget. If this isn't default behavior, it should at least be an option (and maybe auto selected based on the app name of the widget).
A faster animation mode would be nice too ... have the widget slowly sliding over the screen
Are you considering adding the ability to show more than 1 widget? There are some small widgets that I would like to use at the same time because they work well together and they don't take up the whole screen so burn-in protection can still work
---------- Post added at 09:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:37 PM ----------
Also I have a quick suggestion, widget's horizontal and vertical sizes should have separate sliders for different screen orientations. Widget size is messed up with some widgets such as spotify's when you rotate the screen
I'll get back to your suggestions tomorrow, but first I'd like to share something for people that have been asking for a way to use the screensaver as an always on display.
This was actually very easy to do with Tasker, so if you have Tasker, enjoy: https://taskernet.com/shares/?user=...&id=Profile:Start+Screensaver+When+Screen+Off
Yes, this also makes the screensaver start if you're not docked or charging

Yes unfortunately... EMUI removed the functionality... However, Android is Android so XDA has a solution https://www.xda-developers.com/how-...ver-on-huawei-and-honor-devices-running-emui/

Thanks for the tip! I'm working on compatibility with some widgets. Some don't resize properly and some, like you said, require touch to be set up. I'm thinking about maybe a set-up screen where you can resize the widget and preview how large it'll get. This will also allow touch set-ups then. However this probably will take some time as I have numerous bugs to fix and it's just me haha.

I am considering it, especially now more people ask for it. What would you think about splitting the screen in two and having the widgets move around in their halves? I think more than two widgets would definitely get tricky, especially on smaller displays...
Suggestion noted! I agree it shouldn't be like this
Cool Idea and Well Build App
?
This app can keep multiple widgets at screensaver since 2015.
