Turn any widget into a screensaver!
Android has a native screen saver option (yes, I also forgot about that) that was called Daydream before Daydream VR was a thing and is now just called "Screen Saver".
I was surprised not a single screen saver app allowed you to put a widget inside the screen saver, so I quickly whipped up this app to do exactly that.
Now you can reuse that old tablet or phone (with Android 4.2+) as a night stand with your favorite widget for instance!
You can also show your calendar, the latest news, the location of your friends (see my Magical Location Clock app!), or use one of those apps where you can completely design a widget yourself.
The ecosystem is the limit!
The app has burn-in protection, support for multiple widgets, profiles and Tasker support for switching profiles, along with several other settings.
If you have any suggestions, please let me know!
Frequently asked questions:
Widget Screensaver doesn't work?
Please explain what's not working so I can fix it. If any crashes occur, submit them so I can see them and if not, please tell me what does work and what steps you've taken until the problem occurs.
Widget Screensaver doesn't work for this widget?
Please tell me which widget suffers from the problem (with screenshots and link) so I can try and fix it.
Widget Screensaver doesn't work on my Huawei/Honor device running EMUI? I only see default screensavers!
Unfortunately this is due to Huawei blocking third party screensavers. Check this post from XDA for a workaround: https://www.xda-developers.com/how-...ver-on-huawei-and-honor-devices-running-emui/
The command to use is "adb shell settings put secure screensaver_components nl.jolanrensen.widgetscreensaver/.WidgetScreensaverService"
Can Widget Screensaver be used as always on display or when not charging?
While things like detecting when the screen is covered don't work, it is possible to start the screensaver anytime the screen turns off using Tasker (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.dinglisch.android.taskerm). Check out this profile I made: https://taskernet.com/shares/?user=...&id=Profile:Start+Screensaver+When+Screen+Off
For more help you can visit the XDA thread or email me at [email protected]
I'll try to respond as quickly as possible, but it's just me, a student with a hobby, so forgive me if I cannot always respond immediately.
You can download the app from XDA labs at https://labs.xda-developers.com/store/app/nl.jolanrensen.widgetscreensaver or at the Google play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nl.jolanrensen.widgetscreensaver

Thanks for the feedback! I agree it's a bit distracting to look at currently, I'll see what I can do
On another note I see some crashes can still happen, so I've gotta fix those too
This can be way more cool if there somehow mod to enable screensaver any time, like always on display, not only on charger or stand wall.

What you can do perhaps is use Tasker and an app like Daydream launcher to start the screensaver even when you're not charging.
Is this useable only when charged? And if not, is it not battery consuming?

The native android screen saver feature is only running while charging or docked. So yes, this is only running while charging.
Great project!!
One feature to consider is an option to disable the click-action(s) of the widget itself.
For a music-widget it is great, that I can pause/resume while staying in screen saver (! unintended gem !)
But for a calendar/agenda-widget, I might not want my agenda to open.
Again great project, coffee on its way to you or a Grolsch

Don't worry, the touch on the widget was intended haha, I'm making a widget currently that animates upon touch so I needed it. But I like the idea being able to turn it off, so it's going in my to-do list
And thank you very much

I think you figured out the answer!
---------- Post added at 08:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:28 PM ----------
This tool is totally incompatible with KWGT. I think the issue is that you need to click the widget to configure it and clicking on widgets with the screensaver active is making it impossible to interact with whatever pops up.
I think the screen saver needs to be turned off before sending the click to the widget. If this isn't default behavior, it should at least be an option (and maybe auto selected based on the app name of the widget).
A faster animation mode would be nice too ... have the widget slowly sliding over the screen
Are you considering adding the ability to show more than 1 widget? There are some small widgets that I would like to use at the same time because they work well together and they don't take up the whole screen so burn-in protection can still work
---------- Post added at 09:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:37 PM ----------
Also I have a quick suggestion, widget's horizontal and vertical sizes should have separate sliders for different screen orientations. Widget size is messed up with some widgets such as spotify's when you rotate the screen
I'll get back to your suggestions tomorrow, but first I'd like to share something for people that have been asking for a way to use the screensaver as an always on display.
This was actually very easy to do with Tasker, so if you have Tasker, enjoy: https://taskernet.com/shares/?user=...&id=Profile:Start+Screensaver+When+Screen+Off
Yes, this also makes the screensaver start if you're not docked or charging

Yes unfortunately... EMUI removed the functionality... However, Android is Android so XDA has a solution https://www.xda-developers.com/how-...ver-on-huawei-and-honor-devices-running-emui/

Thanks for the tip! I'm working on compatibility with some widgets. Some don't resize properly and some, like you said, require touch to be set up. I'm thinking about maybe a set-up screen where you can resize the widget and preview how large it'll get. This will also allow touch set-ups then. However this probably will take some time as I have numerous bugs to fix and it's just me haha.

I am considering it, especially now more people ask for it. What would you think about splitting the screen in two and having the widgets move around in their halves? I think more than two widgets would definitely get tricky, especially on smaller displays...
Suggestion noted! I agree it shouldn't be like this
Cool Idea and Well Build App
?
This app can keep multiple widgets at screensaver since 2015.

Ever wanted to launch that fancy Daydream screensaver easier? In your Android 4.2+ device's settings, you are only given the options to launch Daydream while docked or while charging.
Now, there is an easier way simply to launch Daydream, right from your home screen, no matter if you are docked, charging, or neither. Just press the icon, and Daydream will start.
I have heard a few people ask for such a shortcut, so I made this; if you have any suggestions or problems to report, please let me know. Also, this is ad-free and requires no permissions.
Google Play link: http://bit.ly/XuPPmv
Also, if you want the source, I will look into putting that up somewhere, too, but it really is a simple shortcut application.
Last thing: if anybody wants to make the feature and/or promo graphics for the app on Google Play, post them here, and I will probably use them.
I hope this shortcut helps somebody out there!

Thanks for the nice comments, guys.
I know this is no excuse, but I have been really busy. However, I got going this week, and have looked into adding more features.
The popular request seems to be for the daydream to start when the screen becomes idle. Well, I have included that, kind of. Some of the features I have added were hard to do, given the way that daydream was set up by Google. There will be a Daydream Launcher Plus app for 99 cents on Google Play that includes many new features and will help to further my development. Also, the current free app will be getting a minor performance update. I hope you enjoy whichever app you choose to use! And, I love all feedback, good and bad (but constructive ).
Have fun, XDAers!

Thanks for the app I was looking for something so I could leave poweramp on and not get image burn in, like a screen saver, which this does -though I notice I have to turn off screen timeout (presuming in all modes one needs to?)
Thanks
Edit: just changed my "car" profile in my profile settings to screen timeout "never", so that I guess easily enough solves it

I know this is an older post but wanted to point out that modern led screens are very very hard to burn and it would take years n years of a solid non moving image to burn in, long after you would have retired most phones. Have you ever seen an image burned into any phone?

I have the Samsung Captivate with the Super AMOLED screen. Apparently some image burn in can occur, as I set power amp music player screen to not turn off when playing, and after not even that much use (maybe more than i realized), leaving it on in the car sometimes, now when it's a solid screen, such as solid grey, I can lightly see the buttons (play, rewind, fast forward, etc.) burned in, so wanted to avoid further burn in.
Great app
I just try it and can say that is great app. It is be more better if you make that daydream app start when screen in idle. That be perfect. Thanks again for your work.

Same thing happens here, but nobody is interested to upload new version compatible on OZCAN ROM AS WELL AS STOCK UI TOUCHWIZ
Speed and fluency as performing actions on our devices, play an
important role. Gestures is born of those needs providing the users the
facility to access to different functions by drawing a simple gesture on the
screen.
Gestures has its own lock screen, which is optional. This provides a huge
speed performing any action, with no need to unlock the device.
Gestures allows us to:
- Call a contact.
- Run an application.
- Enable / Disable: Wifi, Bluetooth, Sound, GPS, Airplane Mode
- Access to a Website.
- Run system options.
- Lock / Unlock Device
- Access multimedia functions: Camera, Gallery
As far as configuration is concerned, Gestures can:
- Be activated by double touch on the home screen.
- Lock screen gestures sensitive alternative.
- Permanent Notification toggling the floating button (overlay)
- Adjust the sensitivity.
- Position the floating button
The steps are three:
1. Locate the desired option from the menu and access it.
2. Press the option and draw a gesture. (Once saved it appears in
your list).
3. Access to the gestures processor by the overlay, the double
touch option on the screen (home) or the lock screen, drawing the
gesture right there.

Wow. I'm impressed. I configured a couple gestures and they worked flawlessly.
I am using my tablet and the activation in the corner works great.
On my phone I feel this will be more difficult. Is it possible to create it as an action so that I can use another app to launch the gesture area?

Could you make launching gestures an activity in the main application? Or can you make the application create a second shortcut to launch it rather than use the widget?
I know it's possible, I just don't know how.
I would really like to use GMD to activate this app, once I can do that I can use this all the time.

Ok, i understand you. At this time it is not possible because the application needs a small initialization between activities. But what I have in mind and can be a feature.
If you have any other suggestions ...
If you want to support the project dont forget to rate Gestos and give us some feedback .
Great app! It works perfectly, and I especially like the lockscreen gestures (which I've been badly missing ever since I upgraded from CyanogenMod 7 to CM10.1). :good:
Feature requests:
It would be nice to have some configuration options for the custom lockscreen. (I don't really like the clock, for example; is there a way to disable that?)
Even better, it would be awesome if you could add a lockscreen widget for Android 4.2+, so we can use gestures on the stock lockscreen! Please? Pretty please?
A paid add-free version would be nice too. I'd happily pay for the app, especially if it had better lockscreen options!
Hi
My application just passed certification process and wanted to share it with you.
This application is available to download for free on Samsung Gear Apps. Just search for "navi watch".
Imagine you are exploring new city or just going somewhere. To be most efficient you use Google Navigation to get to your desired place, but when you are in unknown area you need to look very often in your mobile to stay on path. During nice sunny day your screen brightness on mobile needs to be set on 110% to be able to see something on the screen and your battery discharges very fast(sounds familiar?).
Showing turn-by-turn navigation instructions directly on clock face eliminates the need to launch separate application every time when you look at the watch when navigating on your route. Turn-by-turn instruction with navigation image will be right there when screen turns on.
No need to waste battery on the mobile with screen on all time while looking for directions and keep your mobile in your hands all time, keep your mobile in safely in your pocket/bag and all navigation instructions are delivered instantly on your wrist.
How does it work?
It is integrated with Google Navigation using its notifications and it is necessary to grant notification access to "D.M.A Navi Watch" to be able to see turn-by-turn navigation instructions from Google Navigation directly on your Gear.
After that just start navigating to desired place on your mobile using Google Navigation and follow the navigation instructions on your Gear.
When you are not using navigation, the clock displays date and current weather information with beautiful animated icons. Display, font, colours are all configurable from the application on your mobile.
--Version 1.2
Fixed missing navigation instructions on Android Lollipop
Fixed screen not turning on before turn for some users
Added experimental support for Here maps
Here maps now works, but I don't recommend it. To get notifications on the watch, you need to make sure that the application is running in background.
Second issue is that when the screen is off, Here maps does not send navigations instructions after some time and you need to wake you phone to get current navigation instructions.
I'm working on fixing this, but hopefully Here maps will fix it on their side, I don't want to wake the phone automatically.
--Version 1.1.1(attached below)
Fixed vibation alert compatablity with latest Google Maps
--Version 1.1
Improved clock design
More and better navigation images
Added vibration before turn
Added display on before turn
Added battery icon
AM/PM or 24h time syncs with the device
Compatibility with Gear S
Share button - Don't forget to rate and share :good:

Quality word, if I had to say something, I would request a little bit more space between weather and date on the screen. But it is very nice work, this is now my watch face thank you !!

Well, date and time together make sense to me, so I think it is cool like that. thinking maybe you could add battery percentage in a corner and bluetooth icon in another to know it it is activated or not (both possible to deactivate). I was not asking too much but you seem to ask for work so here are my ideas ahah, thanks for asking! I generally like to have as much information as possible on the watch when I turn it on...

Not able to find the app in Gear App Store
Is this app available for US. I am not able to find the app in Gear App Store
Wow. This is one of the most game changing, useful, and well-made apps released so far.
Thanks so much.
I am going to try it out. Although, it would be nice to have the option to have it be separate as I like my watch faces and don't know if I want to change it every time I want directions, but does sound like a good idea. Good job!!!
Thank you all for feedback.
About the watch face and navigation, due to limitations on Tizen, currently it's not possible to have app that overlays on top of others(or I'm not aware of) like I did on my android application for the end of the world(search for "Doomsday - The last rain" on Google Play).
If it was separate app you would need to launch it every time when you look at your Gear during navigating on your route and that is what I'm trying to avoid, that is the reason why I added the weather widget. More options like app shortcuts or calendar events will be added in later versions.
Don't worry, I will think up something regarding custom watch faces.
I tried it on my Gear 2. Navigation is working and also showing the text in german. But I do not see the data and the time anymore only the weather is showing up. (I use 24h Setup)
Do you have any hint for me, please?
Update -> after reboot of Gear2 the time apears but still no datw
Also, I was thinking, if you make the weather forecast temperature smaller and put it on the left of the screen, you would have room for one shortcut for an app, woud that be possible ? I'm curious.. thanks!

It only shows 12 hour mode for me. Is your phone set to 24 hour mode by chance?
Hi all
I just bought an S7 edge after trading in my iPhone 6S. Overall, its been a great experience. However, the 'Always On' feature seems little more than a glorified clock.
I was surprised to see there wasn't already an app or tweak to customize the 'Always On' screen. Ah well, maybe I should make one instead of complaining (I'm a computer science student, not an Android expert by a long shot but have done my fair share)? So off to find a way...
Technical Overview: Going into the settings, there's an option for setting a picture with a black background to stay 'Always On' instead of the usual clock/call&message counter thingy. This looks very promising. Might even be a little too easy. How about an app that runs in the background and replaces the image with a custom one. So say a whatsapp message arrives, the app draws the message on the custom image and viola!
Okay so maybe it wont be THAT easy, since I suspect the phone just reads the image once on locking and doesn't continually update it. That would make sense after all. Still maybe a refresh can be forced, will have to look into this.
Feedback? This is after all FOSS development, so I'm loath to do start anything without community feedback. Do you guys think this will be useful? Any other comments , suggestions etc. etc.?
Also first post on XDA; long time lurker though.

Would be awesome if you can do this. Best wishes.

It'd be AWESOME if you can do this. Keenly looking forward!
need root for that?
Exactly what i was looking for!

I'm definitely optimistic about this. Going to give it a first attempt when I find some time later this week.
Also, root will probably be needed if the wallpapers are on system files or if a reload has to be forced to view new notifications. Maybe a less functional mode can later be added which doesn't require root.

I like the always on display idea. But turn it off, because of a lack of features.
So yes, i would definitely love to see some development on this!
I too would love to see something along these lines
I'd be happy enough if I could just choose my own AOD image without making any changes to the clocks!
Would love to see 3rd party app notifications on AOD, more customizable features would be awesome

there is already lots of AOD similar apps with customizable notification display
I've developed an android app for bringing Always On to all android devices with AMOLED screens. It's called "Always On: Ambient Clock" . And it is highly customizable.
I can't post a link now since I have only 5 posts but you can search for it on Play Store.

Cool, just tried it. being able to see the battery % would be great too. and let it move around the screen like it does on the S7, so it wont burn the AMOLED. Plus add more features, will be a great replacement AOD :good:

My question is; is there anything special Samsung is doing to get extra battery life out of their AOD? I understand the big advantage is from the AMOLED, but is it just a case of any image with a lot of black has the same advantage as Samsung's AOD? Or have they triggered something special to get all those pixels off. And what about processes that need to run to display the AOD? I assumed that was part of the reason why Samsung's AOD was so minimal in what it can display - because those were basic things already running on the phone and didn't create any extra load.
Basically if there was something special about Samsung's AOD, it would seem to make sense to expand and develop that and build on their existing battery optimization (whatever that might be - special screen setting or special minimal process in the background etc). Otherwise bring on the third party apps!

i think as long your screen is dark thoes pixels will turn it self off BUT i dont know how much more third party AOD apps will drain battery because it will have to be running in the background even the screen is on? but i think the samsung AOD it triggered on of when it detected that your screen is off so it wont drain battery on background service while screen is on(im just guessing this cuz its part of the system it would be easy to trigger it on and off instead of let it run in the background)
It needs the ability for everything being displayed to move around. Stationary is not the way to go. Worse for displays.
Also needs ambient light detection so it can switch brightness on the go.
Lastly on Samsung devices the wave to wake feature stops working.

Hi, I just pushed an update for fixing the burn-in issue. Battery percentage is gonna be added later for sure.
Thanks!

Burn-in issue was fixed in the last update. Auto brightness is on my todo list of updating the app. Backgrounds might cause an additional battery drain but I will consider adding simple ones with black backgrounds.
Thanks!

Great job.
And what I was saying is on my s7 edge I can use the wave to wake feature and the pocket detection.
For the s7 edge it waits a few second before turning off the always on display when in your pocket.
You should set a slight delay for the in pocket activation. Or make it less sensitive. There must be a way to make it happen.
Hi !
I am going to build a new app for Gear S2/S3 that it will help in my daily life. I want ideas for the app from you .
My goal is to build to an app that will be extremely useful for the user, not just a gimmick to use our smartwatch
I am looking forward of your replies

Fidme, it's not that great but beggers can't be chosers
Currency Converter like this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.xelnaga.exchanger
An app or widget that with the pressing of one button allowed for quick saving of GPS coordinates , allows for adding a title to the record, and shares it on Google maps or here maps.
This way whenever we walk into something interesting we want to check out again in the future we just press the button and the location is stored!

Fidme is not so good as Stocard. Stocard works on Android Wear but not Tizen S3. Fidme also does not work on Tizen.
Thanx anyway!

Fidme works on my Gear S3.... It's definitely not as good as Stocard but it's better than nothing. You have to install the Fidme for Gear as well as the companion app on your phone - Not just one.
I was wondering if there's an app available for the Gear S3 that automatically disables the WiFi and Bluetooth of the watch on certain moments or at least at night so I don't have to do it manually every night? That would be so great you know...

Thanx for the answer. It does work just as you said.
Thanks for your replies. I'm between of the about storing GPS cordinates and disabling connections overnight.
Two more questions :
1) With the Gear, can you reply FB messenger using the keyboard?
2)What about a theatre/cinema mode app ?

Like in android? If so, you cannot disable the screen in tizen. Complains are here https://forum.xda-developers.com/gear-s3/how-to/petition-to-add-screen-bezel-button-t3542558
So there is no way to actually implement android like theater mode in this but since screen is amoled true black, you can make an app that keeps the a full black window on top. I actually build this but it waste too much battery if you press buttons much and is too hacky, only works because tizen 2 is based on x11 (some internal api usage), meaning it wont work in tizen 3 so no way to put it in gear store. I'm thinking about open sourcing it soon.
Widget with Shortcut settings:
E.g: Turn off wifi, or Toggle AOD etc.
I just posted this as a separate inquiry:
Are there any vocal/verbal countdown timers, i.e. Speaks 60, 59, 58....
Occasionally I have a need to time something, like eye drops where hearing a countdown down by a voice would be helpful. Anyone know of such an app for the Gear S3?
Thanks in advance.
A good messanger app for Whatsapp, line and so on, like "Messages for Android Wear"
The two things I have been looking for with no success are a "Breathe" app like what is found on the Apple Watch. Also looking for a true weightlifting app with programs you can upload to the watch. The Gear S3 is so much better than AW, but is definitely lacking useful apps.

Yep, no need to go to settings, etc etc just to turn on AOD or Turn off Wifi.
What would be nice is an app that sends selected notifications as morse code with variable speed. It should also have filters so only certain apps and maybe senders result in morse vibrations. Also it would need to ensure notification get sequenced and maybe not happen if watch is not worn
---------- Post added at 03:34 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:31 AM ----------
And I Am still looking for a proper screen lock that can show a watch face but disable any tap, bezel or burn input until a combo is entered. That will allow wearing the s3 while sleeping etc
I would like to have app for diving depth meter.
