I want to start out with "I hope this is the right forum" as I have been searching literally for 2 hours.
I just now got off the phone with Tmo ordering the new (thought was new) GT 10.1 Tmo said they just released today. Rep placing order didn't even have model number. Also Tmo said as of now the only US carrier to offer the SGH-T779
I bought the tab tonight for $237.00 and its shipping with a $50.00 rebate. Yes i did agree on another 2 year contract, I will have unlimited data, talk, and text.
Again sorry if I'm not in the right area, but the threads I have found was a few months old or GT 7.0

I was just at my cor store this afternoon and was about to buy a Skyrocket as I'm sick of waiting for a decently priced Galaxy Nexus. My buddy was about to ring me up when his manager said, "did you tell him about the tablet special for tomorrow?"
Turns out, if you buy the Galaxy Tab 8.9 tomorrow for $479, you get a FREE Skyrocket or GS2.
I have 2 lines that I can upgrade, so this is perfect for me! I think the GS2/Skyrocket are great phones and to get one for free with the purchase of the tablet is killer!
I get a tablet and a phone for less than the price to import a Galaxy Nexus. And I know the skyrocket will get ICS.
Where is this?
The pricing should be available at all AT&T cor stores! I live around the Phoenix, Az area. Talked to the manager today. His store has only 3 tablets, but 6 phones.

Don't you need to sign a 2 year data contract on the Galaxy tab to get the free Skyrocket?

That is correct! But I have a second line I pay for and haven't used in about a year anyway, so I'll just throw it on that. Sure, it's an extra $15/mo for data, but I can live with that. It'll be nice to have data on both my devices anywhere I go. And I'll root the skyrocket and just tether when I want to do heavy data on the tablet away from wifi.

You have to sign a contract on the tab if you want to pay the 479 price or else you pay 629 for no contract for the tab and get the gs2 for free with a 2 year contract.
So i went in to the AT&T store on Saturday to upgrade my phone since I was due. I was talking with the sales rep about the Skyrocket and slobbering over the 50Mbps download speeds, and he said if I was interested in the Galaxy Tab 8.9 I would get the Skyrocket for free. I told him I wasnt interested because I didnt want to get another data plan and the one for the Galaxy Tab 8.9 was $35/mo. He said I didnt have to get a data plan for it. Surprised, I told him I had seen the deal online but that it says you must get the $35 data plan. He said they found a loop hole in the system that allows them to skip the data plan for the tab as long as I have a data plan on the Skyrocket (which of course you have to have anyway).
So long story short, I walked out of the AT&T store with a new Skyrocket and Galaxy Tab 8.9 for $450 (he gave me a $30 discount over the advertised price also ) and I still have my $30/mo unlimited data plan on my phone. Essentially I got the Tab for $200. Did I get a steal or is this a known thing?
Love the tablet BTW, and it has a 4G LTE radio so if I ever want to get data on it I can.
Congrats! Yeah they have been doing this deal since black Friday but the post was a few pages back.
Enjoy! I passed on the 2 contracts deal myself ($450 plus $35/month x 24 months makes for an expensive tab) but if he got around that it makes sense.

Details on the loop hole please?? I need as much ammo as possible when I go visit my local att store!!
I did the same exact thing. Going to cancel the data in a few days since I wanted to try it.

Really this is working??
I almost pulled the trigger but only will use tablet on wifi so.. extra data plan ruined it..
details please.. im heading to att in a few hours..
I didnt have to cancel the tablet data plan, they never even put it on. He didnt elaborate, he just said they found a way to enter it into the system as it only validates that one of the devices (ie the new phone) has a valid data plan. It was a corporate AT&T store, not just a reseller, not sure if that makes a difference.
my sales rep gave me a 50$ account credit to try it after a month and then said i could come back and cancel it. i didnt want to be screwed over, so i wanted to know if he was 100% sure. he then gave me his home phone number as well on the back of the card and said text him whenever i wanted to cancel it and he would let me know when he was in the store next and he would do it.
I've just tried it and it didn't work. They tried everything, at least it looked like it. No deal. I even offered to switch from an iPad 3G plan, but without commitment, it can't be done for less than 629 or so.

commit then cancel
By cancelling you incur an ETF on the tablet if you don't return it. That was the whole point of the 2 yr contract discount no?
OP, what does the the receipt say? my guess is it would show how to get the tab rung out. Possibly the phone first, then the tab?

I got the 8.9 yesterday. They weren't willing to give me the deal but they gave me a $150 credit so I paid the full price with no contract. Anyone root it yet?

Sofar this device is non-rootable. I got it thinking i could root it and make real nice but unfortunately nobody has fiured out anything about root for this device. I am so far pretty disappointed with the device. It is slow and glitchy i have had it SoD many times for no apparent reason? Also i use Swiftkey X and have Swiftkey Tablet installed and it isn't anywhere as good on this as on my Skyrocket or Infuse. I still have not gotten it to do spell corrections on the fly or at all. Dolphin HD doesn't work properly and the Dolphin tablet version sucks.
It just sin't anywhere as good as my Skyrocket and it shoukd be as good or better than the phone. I may end up selling this paper weight.
I love the tablet personally. no problems what so ever.
I am also talking to a few devs about rooting
I agree it's not perfect. I'll wait a few weeks and try it out. You think it will ever get ICS?
OP and others who were successful: could you please PM me the name of the store + rep?
I just tried two at&t store in Manhattan (Wall St and across from the Public Library on 5th) and neither was willing extended any concession whatsoever. They insisted on getting a 2-year contract on both if I wanted both the free phone + subsidize-priced tablet (otherwise would have to purchase full retail @ $600+).
Also, were you an existing at&t customer: did they look up your account and perhaps saw you were eligible for an upgrade/ have a high average monthly bill or anything along those lines?
TIA.
Your best bet is to buy it on Craigslist. I've seen them going for less than $400.
How did you get them to give you a $150 credit?
Hmm...i really feel bad for you guys in the USA on ATT. No free tethering, and they rip you off on deal we have that are much better here. In Canada you can get a Galaxy tab 10.1 and a Skyrocket for 249$ and your contract only covers the skyrocket, so basically you can cancel the data plan for the Tab after a month. And since we have free tethering, you dont really lose the data on the galaxy tab

I walked out when I heard they wanted a 2 year contract. He came and got me and talked to his manager. They do have the option to discount these things.
Where are you located?
Yes, one rep last night told me each store as a budget for that purpose.
I suppose you have to go a store with very slow sales. I waited for the end of the month, thinking they'd be eager to make their monthly sales quotas, but I guess it doesn't work in NYC. There is just too much money.
Gotta try a far away at&t store somewhere ... or Canada given the deal being mentioned above.
I just bought a galaxy s3 2 months ago (t mobile) in contract 2 years. I don't like it. I have my old phone as well. I put the sim from galaxy into my old phone activated it same number and all and it works fine. Now I have a new galaxy s3 here that I am not using at all. Can I sell it without the buyer having any problems activating it? Will it still be attached to my account. Not sure how this works. I have never did this before
I know this is prob a dumb ? but i just wanna make sure before I sell it.
The phone would be carrier-locked to tmobile and probably to your account. Im guessing you paid a subsidized price for it, like $100, and it's so cheap because they intend to recoup the actual cost over the life of your contract. Contact them and see what they have to say.
I have AT&T. I had a galaxy s3, loved it but wanted the note 2, so I bought a note 2 for full price. I then sold my s3 to someone who was also on att and everything was okay. I just wiped the s3, factory reset it, and took out my sim.

Full price, meaning several hundred dollars? Sounds like you would lose the subsidy on a second phone?
Note: I take no responsibility if you try this and it doesn't work for you...
So this was totally accidental. But I essentially bought my Note 5 for $300 after trading in two other devices for it. I ordered the note 5 on the edge plan so I could take advantage of the $200 device trade-in. As soon as I got the phone, I paid off the remaining balance so that my monthly fee essentially stayed the same (actually, it somehow got cheaper). In essence, I bought the phone outright for $496 plus tax.
But then about a week or so later, I received a text message saying "Congratulations on buying a new Note 5, you are now eligible for a $200 trade-in" along with a promo code to enter at their website. Mind you, I was skeptical at first since I already traded a phone in, but I went ahead and gave it a shot anyway figuring I've got nothing to lose. I went to the website and put in the promo code (the value of my trade-in device jumped from $1 to $200 lol), received the packaging material in the mail, sent in a pos phone, and received a $200 verizon gift card. This brought my total out of pocket with tax down to $330 for a brand new Note 5. My next step is convincing them to unlock it as I will be doing a lot of international travelling and if they think I'm going to be paying Verizon international roaming fees they are out of their damn minds.
So while I hate Verizon for locking bootloaders, disabling features, and blocking Samsung pay, along with all of their other gimmicks, I am at least a little internally satisfied that I DID get my money's worth on this particular phone. Thank you Verizon. You still suck!

Verizon phones are globally unlocked now I believe. Has been that way for a while now.
This has been true for the past few releases since the note 2. However nobody I have talked to at Verizon has been able to give me a straight answer on whether or not the note 5 is factory unlocked which raises my suspicion. In the past, that information was readily available and was actually used as a selling point.

I got the same text. I wish I had a junk smartphone laying around. I thought about buying a phone on ebay, but didn't want to take the risk.

It is def unlocked. Verizon was forced to unlock all LTE phones. It was part of an agreement for frequencies or bands.
Due to Lte 700 Mhz C block rules, the Verizon LTE phones have been sim/carrier unlocked.
That doesn't mean it supports all LTE bands though. You have to check the bands the phones support if you want to use them on another carrier.
I found this cool website willmyphonework.net. to check for frequencies in various countries.
Verizon Note 5 is sim unlocked but i believe they have Knox locked. Meaning you cant root the device and install custom ROMs.
This worked for me!
Thanks!
If you are on one of old's Verizon plan, I am on 1400 family plan, then I upgraded my wife's and my sister in law's phones to note 5 through Costco in California and they signed 2 years contract and got the phones subsidized at $277 including tax with free external charger. I didn't lose my unlimited data either when they upgraded.
I have edge plus that I bought at full price from best buy

Finally said good bye to Verizon, for good.. There 1 Yr and that is all I can stand of them... Went back to Sprint, with my unlimited data, text, talk. I got tired of watching my data usage with Verizon, plus most of their phones can not even been rooted... I bought the Samsung S7 edge, and the wife ,wanted and she got the Iphone 7+.. I know there does not appear to be much happening on the S 7 in Sprint, but seems to be doing well on the international side... Now time to sell my Verizon Note 4 unlocked bootloader and custom rom, along with my Verizon Droid Turbo, on ebay..
Being with Verizon is like Stockholm syndrome.
