[Q] Thinking of rooting my S3 - General Questions and Answers

Last time i ever rooted a mobile it was my old Htc desire a few years ago now, i have had my samsung s3 for over 3 months but after updating to Jellybean i have had a few errors coming up, main one was touchwiz failed and also failed to update even though i am running Jellybean. I think the failed to update is to do with logs on my Mobile or something like that. I fixed the touch wix problem by installing nova launcher as well but just fancy Rooting it Now.
I have Vodafone contract running 4.1.1 (JB) and the model number is GT-I9300
I have been through the threads but there is that many different s3 info i was wanting to make sure i follow the correct thread, would also like reccomendations on which ROM to use and if you can duel boot it with 2 different rom options as well.
Thanks for reading and hope i have posted in the correct thread

I am pretty new to it but the S3 is the easiest phone ever to root. Just head over to the I9300 forum and look for CFRoot 6.4 and use Odin to flash that. Took me about 5 minutes.
I am running Siyah Kernel which allows me to dual boot CRDroid rom and Cm10.

I am no longer supporting this version of CF-Root. I have personally moved away from permanent custom recoveries. I will still be providing roots by way of CF-Auto-Root (click). The downloads in this thread will remain available, I just won't be updating them.

CF-Root or CF-Auto-Root?

This is the one I used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238
Though if you read the top of that it appears to have been replaced by auto root. So I would go for the latter.

CF-Root is used for installing Custom ROMS.
CF-Auto-Root is for stock ROMs and installing SuperSU (gaining root) ONLY.

Root the Verizon S3 1535

Hey all,
After looking over some of the ROM's available and other information regarding the S3, I'm a little confused on the rooting process. I've rooted my motorola droids and xoom, but this one seems different, no doubt due to 4.1.2, which my S3 is running. I understand that there are 2 sets of ROMs in here, with one set being specifically for Verizon S3 Android Development. Does it matter which I use? I'm liking hyperspeed rom, from what I see it looks good, but most of the root guides/walkthroughs I've seen are from last year. So my question is, what do I need for my unrooted Verizon S3 running stock 4.1.2 to root and install Hyperspeed or other JB Roms. One guide was very detailed but links to Odin and other files didn't work or was an old ICS guide. Need some pointers, been a while since I've done this.
Thanks in advance...
I recall using an app called "EZ Unlock" to root the phone, it was super easy. Once rooted and unlocked I think the next step was installing ClockworkMod or similar recovery. Then do a full nandroid backup. You should probably read the thread on backing up your IMEI as well, I don't know if its still an issue but you should do it just in case.
Now you can start thinking about the two sets of available ROMS.. Basically you have numerous flavors of TouchWiz and AOSP roms. The TouchWiz roms behave more like the stock os on the device and still have the Samsung camera, etc while the AOSP roms are more "Nexus" like. Personally I prefer the AOSP side of things and have settled on CM10.1.

EZ Unlock is for unlocking the boot loader not for rooting your phone. The IMEI issue normally happens when flashing AOSP ROMs but it has happened when flashing TouchWiz ROMs.

This is an easy upgrade (and one I did, going from a 4.1.2 ROM called BoneStock 3.4 to MOAR 7.1 and then to my current TW4.3 ROM, CleanROM 8.0). Its pretty similar to any other ROM you have flashed. You just need to make sure you flash a ML1 modem (which it appears you have already done), then flashing the new ROM.
There are a number of good TW 4.3 ROMs found on the Verizon Galaxy S III Android Development thread, and while I have experience with Mother of All ROMS aka MOAR (recently updated to v8.0) and CleanROM, but each phone is different so what works best on mine (or even what has the features you value most) may differ for you. Best to research each of the TW 4.3 ROMs by reading the specific developer threads and even asking questions once you have researched. The developers and the community is very helpful once you have done your own homework. Pay attention to what the developer instructs in the OP of each thread, as most of any question have about how to install are usually answered in the OP.
The good news... these ROMs are getting rock solid... pretty problem free and smooth. Good luck and enjoy the new ROM!
UPDATE: one suggestion... you may want to update whatever Recovery you are using. I do know going to a 4.4 ROM requires the latest TWRP (the recovery I favor) to 2.6.3.1 which I am pretty sure is the latest version. It may not be required for 4.3, but seems a good idea none the less. You will also note that your files will then be stored in a different place (I am not technical enough to explain this... so do some research on that). This will make a difference when you back up important files (pictures, messages etc) and also when you do the nandroids. And always, always make nandroids!

Help on a MF1 baseband upgrading it to "?"

Im a S4 and now a S5 user and this Verizion I535 S3 is looking scary. Two years ago I got the phone, unlocked the bootloader, installed a custom recovery, and installed CleanROM Seven. It has 4.1.2 Android Version with MF1 Baseband. With so many threads on updating to 4.3 and 4.4 is very bad with this version of phone, what options do I have? It's GPS is all mest up and hope to improve some battery by putting a new updated ROM on it. Can somebody point me in the right direction and show me some good options with links?

As far as roms you have many choices. Have you tried tightening the screws on the back of the phone? I've read people have had luck with that. I'd stay with the unlocked bootloader

Currently I flashed the latest TWRP and found a old Synergy Rom that's dated April 2013 that runs 4.1.2 and is MF1 based, other then that ROM can't find anything else that I believe would flash correctly. After installing the ROM, GPS was not fixed, and came across the "tightening of screws trick" As everybody has posted, it worked! Nevertheless, on day one got a random reboot and a forceclose on the camera. Still looking for ROM choices that I could use.

Glad to hear the screw option worked. You can always go with a rom that's not 4.1.2 based. There are plenty of custom roms out there for the S3

[Q] Flash a S3 on Kitkat?

Hi,
It's been ages since I've been in the s3 rooting community. I'm trying to root my friend's SCH-I535 that's on Kitkat, and I haven't found any guides. In the end I just want Cyanogenmod on it. Any threads that can help me out?

If its on the OTA of 4.4.2 NE1 then rooting is your only option besides safestrap. Custom roms are no longer an option

towelroot will work to root your phone if the kernel build date is prior to July 2014.
From what I have read the version of the Towelroot site does not work. I spent some time searching this forum and found a download for v3. Unfortunately I don't recall which thread it was on.

Towelroot all the way, bro. I downloaded it from the TR site back in February. Works like a charm. You can't get a custom ROM, but I highly recommend Xposed for customization
Only custom ROM is SUPERLITE and Paul Pizz, both of which look like stock. SUPERLITE should be getting a s5 update *hehehehehehe*

rom for galaxy s5 sm-g900a at&t

Good day
Previously I had a Galaxy S3 and I was using CyanogenMod – Loved it!
I just always preferred a phone that was clean and lean without all the bloatware.
Now I’m with the S5 and there is possibly an option available for a custom ROM for my phone?
Currently –
SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 SM-G900A AT&T
Lollipop 5.0 G900AUCU3BOC4
So far as I can tell this phone could not be rooted.
Until a few days ago I got a notice in an email that it was now available.
I was on their mailing list if something should become available.
oneclickroot
I know you can’t go backward LP 5.0 – KK 4.4.
One can only go forward, LP 5.0 - LP 5.1 or LP 5.0 – Marshmallow.
However most of what I have seen out there for my phone has been LP 5.0.
At present I’m looking at these unless someone can suggest something else.
TMS5 3.0 ROM LP5.0
Twi5ted lollipop V7 LP 5.0
Alliance V8 ROM LP5.0
My question is, can I go from LP 5.0 (Stock) to LP 5.0 (Custom)?

If you've got the locked bootloader then you're out of luck rooting and flashing TWRP/Cyanogenmod.

Actually the phone is rooted now. Right after I posted this I used Kingroot king481.apk and Titanium Backup is installed and Root Check confirmed its now rooted. Although I have not tried the Bootloader...... With my luck that is another issue..... I wonder if I should try the first step with the Bootloader and see if SAFESTRAP or TWRP can install?

Safestrap is no longer supported and with locked bootloader you're not gonna get TWRP to work.

Really appreciate an an answer, even if its still, "sorry, still out of luck",
Also, is this a good place for this, or should i start a new thread?
Thanks.

Your device is an AT&T variant, your device has a locked bootloader, you can't install custom recovery with a locked bootloader. The bootloader on your device can not be unlocked, you will never be able to install custom recovery on your device. If you want custom recovery you will have to get another device because you will never be able to use custom recovery on the device that you already have.
