With the Jelly bean update I noticed it made my GS3 into a world phone, if I select Preferred network and set it to GSM/UMTS and select manual At&t and T-Mobile are displayed but I can't connect...I'm assuming because my phone isn't provisioned to be used on those. But is there anyway to make this phone roam on other networks...I thought that was the whole point of roaming? I don't care about data when roaming just voice.
If I'm not mistaken, in order to roam on their networks you need an AT&T or T-Mobile sim card. I've never tried nor do I remotely know how this works though.

So this may be a dumb question, but I can't help but to wonder. Is there a way to use different carrier's networks? I know each operate on their own frequencies or ranges, but it seems with all the things you can do with this phone it could be possible. I think it would be amazing if I could use T-Mobile's or Verizon's 4g network, or just switch carriers whenever one had better service/reception. Is there an app for this maybe? Would it require installation of different modems every time you switch networks? Would you have to modify sim card somehow? Is there any kind of information I can read on this somewhere? Any info is appreciated.
You can only connect to the carriers network for whom you have a sim card for.

I know that. I'm wondering if there is a way around that. Verizon doesn't have sim cards right? At least not removable like ATT. Maybe it's just a matter of programming/software on your simcard. I'm just wondering if doing this would be possible. I know how the game goes now, just wondering what stops us from doing this? Aside from the morality issues of stealing.

Verizon gives u a SIM card if u say u are traveling abroad, and want to use their service abroad.
AT&T and T-Mobile along with some others are aa GSM style of network. Verizon, sprint and others.are based on a CDMA network. They are completely different. The only it could be possible if is all the companies 4G networks were the same, such as LTE. Which is extremely doubtful that it will work that way seeing that Sprint is already going Wimax and T-Mobile HSPA+

Didn't know that. I guess I could pay $80 a month to each company. I'm wondering if it's possible to not do that and still get it using only one sim card.
Yes their is. If you have AT&T you can add T-Mobile's APNs along with any other carrier that is GSM that supports your frequency. However, if you switch to that other carriers APN you will be bill astronomical roaming charges.

AT&T is switching to UMTS for their 3G. Same 850 and 1900 bands though. And will be upgrading to LTS for 4g sometime in the near future. I actually install the UMTS cabinets, 850&1900 radios, and coax at towers around here. So there's no possible way to take whatever it is on a sim card that works for a CDMA network and throw it on an AT&T simcard somehow(maybe like a stored contact) and use that programming selectively?

Oh so it is possible, but it's considered roaming? I guess that makes sense. Pretty much what roaming is, using something outside of your carrier.

The sim card ties a phone to a carrier. There is no software to bypass this. Some phones support 2 sims via 2 slots. As for vzw, there sim is a vodaphone sim and only works in other countries as there is no vodaphone service in the us.
If you want multiple gsm carriers you need multiple sims. EU has a hundred different sim cards to support all the carriers.

I have personally use T-Mobile with an AT&T sim card but the bill is not pretty.
For some reason my Sensation 4G(TMO-US) won't data roam on AT&T network. Any ideas?
Here's the current situation... 2g is all I can get at home. My 2g icon is showing but NOTHING that requires data will work. I'm roaming on AT&T because I'm outside the city, and voice and text work just fine but when I check my data roaming via *#*#4636#*#* it says not roaming. YES I HAVE DATA ROAMING ENABLED. My gf has the Exhibit 4g and has no issues... When I put her SIM into my phone data works just fine. I've called T-mobile and they claim our phone settings are identical and data roaming is enabled on their end for my SIM but when i put my SIM into her phone it won't connect to 2g. I've removed the battery and SIM, toggled ciphering, had then rebroadcast my number and still nothing. AND YES it's a new SIM card, actually the 2nd one and Tmobile 4g and 2g work just fine as well when I'm in their service area. Any help would be appreciated since T-mobile doesn't see this as a big enough problem. Can I somehow enter an APN for ATT? I'm really out of ideas.

I have the same issue did you ever find a solution?
Tmobile had to have a tech rebuild my profile for their network. Took about a week or so. Everything has been fine since.

Is this even possible. To make the phone work on cdma and hspa. or gsm what ever you call it
Yeah if you use a gsm sim card just download phone info app from play store and change the radio to GSM. only voice and text works with this easy method. read the entire thread below to make data work. HSPA+ works on at&t but only edge for t-mobile. most worldwide networks should work with 3G or HSPA but you have to enter in the right APN.

I got it to work on sprint, but call and text only. No data, I couldn't get it to work.

how can I get an unlocked sch-i535 to work on tmobile and access the LTE network, is there a certain rom, kernel, apn, or any other settings/process that can be done to work? I have a tmobile sim card in it and am only running on Edge Network, and since Phoenix (where I live) has LTE I want it bad
Shouldn't work. Most anyone has gotten (like you) is Edge data once they've edited their APNs. Additionally, each carrier supports different LTE bands so it's not compatible on Verizon's GSIII. It's not like the Optimus G which just had a dormant LTE band waiting to be exploited.

Is there a workaround or any suggestions to get everything functional such as calls etc.
As of now only data works but you can't receive or send out messages, make calls etc.
When connected to H+ everything works flawlessly and the carrier shows, when connected to LTE only data works nothing else and the phone can't identify what carrier is being used.

UPDATE:
The issue seems to be that Verizon by default is locking the GSM radio. Users are reporting the same in the Moto X and Droid Ultra forum. Users using 4.4.2 on T-Mobile with a Verizon device.

They are SIM unlocked as I'm using one but it seems the band we need for LTE isn't playing well.

Was curious if anyone else was having this issue. Any thoughts that it might be related to skipping Verizon activation? When I got the phone, wasn't activated and on first turn on it prompted activating Verizon Sim but I exited out and just popped in T-Mobile Sim.

AFAIK, LTE (unless the carrier is using voLTE) is a data only network. Verizon uses LTE for data and CDMA for calls and text.
Verizon seems to only allow GSM/UMTS or CDMA/LTE on the M8 at one time, there doesn't seem to be a true Global mode that allows GSM/UMTS and LTE to run at the same time.
That would explain why people are reporting either LTE or calls/texting (which, as above mentioned, only works on 2G/3G (be that CDMA or GSM))
The question is, is there a way to get around this? On the S3/S4 there was an app called phoneinfo which showed more modes than the Mobile Network settings menu. Is there such a thing for the M8?
This is quite disappointing news for me, since this is the first Verizon phone I'm aware of that has the 1800MHz LTE band, and that's the band used in Australia where I'm headed soon. I was excited about being able to finally use LTE there! I guess I'll have a choice between LTE and calls/text like all those in this thread using T-Mobile.

Hoping the best that this would be the fix for the GSM
while you edit the data as well I believe
Will never get 4G LTE on any other carrier besides Verizon in the US. Never have. Never will. Those radio bands are blocked at chip level.

More than likely it is same as Verizon. Won't happen till they have voice and data both over AWS network. Currently on Verizon data is on LTE and voice is on CDMA. If can get into signal settings may be a way to lock the voice section in. It is not on LTE. Verizon has had the two linked since TBolt. Others have had a problem doing this. Has to be able to do dual band at same time. Also shouldn't get LTE at all if not in T-Mobile AWS area.
Unless T-Mobile rolls out voLTE and the M8 is compatible, the VZW M8 won't work for both call/sms and LTE data simultaneously. The other solution would be figuring out a new mode that allows LTE and GSM/UMTS to work together, maybe a software update will do that, but something tells me VZW isn't running to make our lives easier in this regard (Unless they start offering international 4G LTE roaming, then they'll have to fix this issue - and that might be on the horizon as this is the first VZW phone to have LTE bands that VZW doesn't use nor has any plans to use, such band 3 1800MHz)
