Hello, I recorded many files (.amr) on the Voice Recorder, but lately I noticed some of them can not be played. When you choose the file from the list, just shows 0.00 s and it doesn't start. Otherwise the file is not 0.00 s and it is not 0 MB. If it's copied to the PC can not be played either. The other strange thing is, that sometimes after recording the file works, but if you try next day it does not. Not all of the files are broken. Most works, just some does not. Maybe about 1 of 5 file just does not work. Also if a file which works is copied to another directory in SD card, the new copy is not working, even if the original still works. Checked for viruses, nothing was found, tried to record in other format AAL i think, still the same. Some work some do not. Please help if anyone had similar problem and found solution.

Thank you, I will try that one. Meanwhile I deleted most of the files and now seems better. Haven't had broken one yet. But I think when they get more the problem will start again. I had more than 25 GB free on the SD card, but I think the number of broken files is related to number of all files.
Your issue may be caused by a faulty micro sd or an inconsistent file system.

Hi,
File transfer doesn't always play nice with files... When you remove files from your computer, they get removed from your phone as well. The same happens when you delete a song from the iTunes library. The same song gets deleted from your iPod upon a sync. You should check the preferences of your sync program whether there is some option to prevent this.

I'm sorry, but what are you talking about?
My problems started today when the music and video apps stopped showing anything from sd card.
Then I got 176 songs from a total of over 1000....
I already gave up on pictures but I at least thought videos and music would always work.
And I took this tablet with me to Korea so stuck with it for the foreseeable future.
I am confused, what is your question -.,-?

Anyone else having this problem?
What happens if you double-click one of the missing songs using Windows Explorer? It should play then.
It's possible that the app's library database got messed up somehow (perhaps the card lost connection while the app was running?) and needs to rebuild, which takes some time.
Hi, you might want to try this: http://www.teamradicus.com/post/Surface-and-SD-Card.aspx I had similar problems when I had my SD card mounted to a C:\SD folder (I was seeing files that do not exist and not seeing new files and applications crashed when I clicked at those non-existing files) and this helped me to resolve that issue.
Yeah, I started going song by song and got some more back that way.
Playlists never recovered.

EDIT NVM got the site to work.
Hi there! This will be my first thread at XDA.
I've just upgraded my HTC Sensation from stock to InsertCoin 6.0.0, and also installed the Beats Audio media player.
While I removed my SD card, inserted it into my PC, and copied 274 mp3 tracks to it, the standard music player couldn't play any of the songs. Also, the Photo Gallery wasn't able to find new pictures anymore.
People told me that my SD card was bad, which I found a little bit strange. The app "File Manager" was flawlessly able to find all of the pictures, and also the music, which actually could be played by the HTC music player by the app itself. I think this is caused by a bug or something, so I found out the fix myself:
1. Download a file browser app like "File manager" or "ES File Explorer"
2. Delete the folder /sdcard/music (or format the SD card, but make sure to backup the content you wish to keep!)
3. Create a new folder called "Music" at the root of your SD card
4. Get the app "Wifi File Explorer" from Google Play
5. Activate the WiFi (All Apps > Settings > Wireless & Networks > WiFi for older phones)
6. Open the browser and insert the URL shown by the app
7. Upload a file, open the music app, and see if it plays. If it works: zip all the songs, send them to the phone, and unzip them by clicking "unzip" next to the folder in the browser.
If it doesn't, I'm afraid you'll have to format your SD card. (All apps > Settings > Storage > Unmount SD card, and then Delete (Format) SD card)
Hope it'll help someone out there! Cheers
Edit: To avoid that this will happen again, connect your phone to the PC using a USB cable by the next time.
Edit #2: USB file transfer results exactly the same. I strongly recommend using Wifi File Explorer (or similar) to transfer desired data files between the PC and smartphone.
Playing music issues
Helou.
My GF reached your post looking for a solution to the same problem you had. Then she contacted me. In case you are still having this problem, is rather simply caused by a lack of trigger of the media scan. Every time you copy a media file to your phone's memory, it should trigger this action, but sometimes it doesnt happens (dont ask me why, it should). In fact, the solution you give is that the Wifi Explorer app correctly triggers the media scan. You can save precious minutes by just installing this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.addz.mediascanner
And run it every time you copy/move files around from your pc to your phone.
If it helped, then update your thread with the solution, you never know when someone is looking for the same problem (then again, is one month old, maybe you're no longer here)
It worked for me.
I know this is an old thread and I didn't see where anyone noted that the solution worked. I have an HTC Incredible that was flaking out on me. The issue stated in this thread came up when I was reloading my music onto my SD card. I came across this forum and looked up the app recommended and it solved the problem. I am thankful for people out there who know what they are doing.
On my nexus 4 I could create new directories ("Ringtones","Notifications", "Alarms") on my virtual sd card and place tones in there. Then the preference lists for choosing these notification types showed the extra tones.
On the nexus 5 this doesn't seem to happen. Does anyone know of a different way to do this?

I'm getting files show in the preference lists up from /sdcard/media/audio/ringtones - however they're just playing a "bong" noise, not the actual mp3.

all my ringtones and custom notifications are working just fine

Not working for me either on n4, n5, or the n7 with stock Rom. Worked fine when I used aokp.
The only way I can get it to sort of work now is use rings extended then select es file explorer and naturally navigate to the file. Then it plays fine. They just won't show up to preview them the way it normal did.
It does work I put them in the system audio notification ect folder, but I'm trying too avoid messing with system for the first time.

I got it working. Very frustrating. Initially what i did was download all my notifications and such from dropbox directly to my phone and put them in the correct folders. Rebooted ect and it didn't work. I was told to try plugging my phone into the computer and moving the folders and around and back into the right folder. Then I disconnected from computer then they showed up. I wonder if the media scan isn't working unless you unplug USB? IDK, but it works now.
Sounds silly, but try it.

On my Nexus 4 I had my ringtones in /sdcard/Ringtones and that doesn't work with the Nexus 5. I also tried /sdcard/media/Ringtones and that didn't work either. In both cases I even tried rebooting the phone after putting the mp3 files to hopefully trigger a media scan.
So what would the correct location be?
Thanks in advance,
Bernhard

i downloaded it, AirDroided the mp3 to my phone (default is storage/emulated/0) /notifications, and selected it as my Hangouts sms tone...sent an sms to myself, turned off the screen, and bazinga, it works
when you say /sdcard, do you mean you made that directory via pc, or are you referring to ESFileExplorer (or the like) reporting the directory as /sdcard? on Nexii, '/sdcard' just points to storage/emulated/0 [i think it's something called a simlink, but i don't know what that is]
Works for for me... I use ASTRO File Manager
Notification MP3 went into SD Card > Media > Audio > Notification
Ringtone MP3 went into SD CARD > Ringtone

I am referring to the way ES FileExplorer reports it, so /sdcard/Ringtones is in fact /storage/emulated/0/Ringtones.
Could you please try it with putting it into /sdcard/Ringtones as well and see, if Media Storage shows it as a Ringtone.
No idea, why this doesn't work for me, when it works for others.

sorry mate, I'm not doing it again, the result is going to be exactly the same
After some testing I can confirm this on a NON-ROOTED Nexus 5.
You can place notification sound files in either of these two locations, they work equally well. Note that this post, unlike many is typed with care and shows the EXACT path names from root with proper capitalization. I did not try all the bastardizations but case and plural/singular actually matter a lot of times.
/sdcard/Notifications (/storage/emulated/0/Notifications)
/sdcard/media/audio/notifications (/storage/emulated/0/media/audio/notifications)
HOW-EVER-ER...
You must move at least 1 file to the directory from your PC before ANYTHING will show up. It seems, and stands to reason, as others noted that moving from the PC while attached as a media device causes Android to rescan the directories. I did not test if you only need to move 1 file on the whole file system or if you have to do it per directory. But by moving one file out and back FROM THE PC all files in those directories became visible in notification pick lists.
I also rebooted after moving the files around. I probably should have checked before since it may not be necessary. But I am so accustomed to rebooting I forgot to test that.
Hope this clears things up.

hey I got the same problem as you
The ringtone is not being picked default media storage and even it picked in some cases im getting the bong sound
so here is the work around
dont use the media storage as default ringtone picker .if you already did that ..go to settings->apps->all apps->media storage and clear defaults of it
then go to settings ->sounds->ringtone and use esfile explorer in this case ..select the ringtone you got using the file browser then it works
another file manager
as said some posts before i suggest to use another file manager than the stock one, it worked for me
I pluged the phone into the computer USB. Cpoied the ringtone of my choice to the ringtone folder. Did the same with the notification ringtone. Go and select the file in Settings...Sound. Mine were .ogg files
Once you install the sound files in the various locations on the sdcard, such as /sdcard/Ringtones, you can update media storage by doing either of the following:
Go to settings -> apps -> all -> media storage and clear data, then reboot
Or
Use the app ScanMedia to update
My device is an Acer Iconia a700 running Android 4.1 stock and unrooted.
Yesterday MX player happily played my media files.
Today after an update of both player and codec to the most recent version it plays nothing.
The folder list is bare and empty except for ringtones and notifications.
The folder list includes /Removable (which is where all my media is kept because the onboard storage is full of boring work stuff)
But I have no video or audio available.
The card is mounted OK
I can see the files using the file manager and long-press and play with MX
But surely I should be able to expect the same behaviour as before this KitKat update ?

I've refreshed quite a few times
- the folders/files on the card remain invisible.
I'll have a go at uploading a log when I've looked for alternative players.
This one was OK but I don't have time to fiddle around with it for too long to get it to work.

I can confirm this issue
Hi,
I can confirm this issue on my daughters Tesco Hudl also. The hudl is running android 4.2.2. Up to yesterday it was working perfectly all year long with mx player to play all her kids tv shows. However after the update which downloaded to the tablet yesterday, none of the content on the microsd is detected in the mx player. I have tried manually adding it but to no avail. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling to rule out the possibility of a corrupted update but still no luck. I am attaching the bug report here. Hopefully this can be resolved quickly since she uses it everyday.
Thanks,
Barry.

I have managed to get to the bottom of this issue on my device. The issue was in the new update of mx player. I uninstalled and re-installed and started with a fresh version to make sure I was getting an accurate representation of the problem. When I navigated to the settings regarding the folders included in the search, there were two listings active. The main local path and also another one "/removable". However when I checked the path of my microsd on the Hudl, the card is mounted as "/mnt/[sdcard or external, I dont have the device to hand right now to check the exact path name but it is in the mnt path]/". So the issue in this new version seems to have been that it did not automatically include/add the sdcard path to the listings in mx player. I had to manually search for the path and then add it. After this a refresh showed all my media. Perhaps the new version removed some default paths etc, since the old version automatically detected the sdcard everytime. Either way I hope this information helps someone else. Sorry I don't have the exact path to hand, but you get the idea anyway. Mx player is a top notch product and I am delighted it works well for my daughter again.
All the best,
Barry.

The new logic was introduced in 1.7.32
If your primary sdcard (it may be internal or external) is mounted under /mnt/ then mx player will list /mnt/, if primary sdcard is mounted under /storage/emulated/ it will list /storage
It looks like your primary card is mounted under /storage & secondary card is mounted under /mnt
Even in this case, most of the vendors leave symbolic links.
The main issue is that, android doesn't use any standard for external Sd mount points. There is no api to determine the mount point too.

Thanks for the reply. The card with the content in question(the physical microsd that I put in and out of the slot) is definitely mounted under /mnt/. You are correct the initial paths shown were /storage/ and /removable/. I had to manually add the /mnt/ one in the new version. Just out of curiosity, is the new logic the root of the issue for me? Before the update at the weekend the previous version detected the microsd immediately when it was inserted and then refreshed but the new one would not until the /mnt/ path was added manually.
Cheers,
Barry.
