question about lost phones/barring - General Questions and Answers

i'd like to give the situation some context so sorry if its out of line for forum rules or sth but i think it would make you understane more (otherwise it's probably going to sound like a stole the phone and just want to get round the barring or sth)
so i met someone on a night out that was pretty drunk and lost but wanted to party with my group of friends so i was like ok hung thier coat up blah. long story short i left before they did they forgot to take their coat home which has their phone in the pocket. so i'm supposed to now give them their coat back as my other friend realised the person had left it and thought i'd be able to.
except i dont acutally know the person apart from their first name.
now i figured i should be able to just look through their phone and find a helpful contact that i can call and be like hey i have X's coat and phone here it was left on a night out perhaps you could help me get the stuff back to her.
but now i'm thinking the phone might be blocked already (i dont know this yet a my friend still has the coat with phone) if the person has reported it lost/stolen. but if its blocked that usually means the phone functions just without a network so i'd be able to still look through the contact list?
i'm trying to think of the possiblitlies that would help me/stop me from viewing the contact list.
if sim card is locked then i can just put in another sim
if the it has a phone lock code then i'm probably screwed?
are there anythings you suggest that would help me? or is it a lost cause?
i'd really like to get the phone (& coat) back to this person.
[not gona lie...... kinda want to see them again ]

if a phone is reported lost or stolen its barred right?
that means no matter what sim card you put in/whether its unlocked to any network or not it will NOT pick up a network signal thus rendering it useless (as a phone at least)
is the sim also deactivated/barred?
maybe i could just put the sim into another phone and try to view the contacts that way? unless they have a sim pin set up :[
chances of having a sim pin & a screen unlock are HUGE really arent they? :[

Why don't you just open it and see for yourself?

because i dont have the phone yet thats the point.
i'm trying to be efficient and forsee the possibilites that may occur so that when i'm faced with a screenlock or w.e i know what to do that would still enable me to view the contacts instead of having to take the time to then go and research. i may aswell research now.
i can't get the stuff any sooner than tuesday.

Ah, I see.
If the phone is blocked by using the IMEI number, than the device is refused access to any network.
In other words, you will be able to open the phone, access the contacts etc., you just won't be able to make any calls/send messages.

that would be alright.
it doesnt help that i dont even know what kind of phone it is.
the thing is it probably has a screen lock. i wouldnt be able to get round that?
(i hate this because it sounds like i'm doing it for bad :[ lol i just want to see the cute girl again & of course be the hero by giving her phone & jacket back )
if its a sim pin then i can just put another sim in the phone (hopefully it wont be locked to a network of a sim card i dont have) unless it would operate without a sim?
:/ crap it might even be a mirco sim.

So let me get this straight....you want to be the hero and see the cute girl by trying to break an imei/screen unlock and go through her personal data.
Sound like you want to be more of a stalker than a hero.
Youre definetly trying to do more than you say. Normal people dont go through that much trouble to return phones. Unlocking this....getting around that. ..bypassing security stuff...
And then you say you dont have the phone yet....someone else has it blah blah blah....weird
Youre sketch

well no. i dont want to actually break into. i dont know how to do all this stuff.
all i'm saying is i'll have her phone & coat i'm the only person from my group who knows who it belongs to it'd be nice to give it back to her.
i wont be able to do that if i cant find a way to contact her.
so i was simply asking is there a way i'll be able to view her contacts list so that i'd find someone useful for example "dad" or whatever then i'd just call it up and be like "hey your daughter left her coat and phone at club x the other night. maybe she could give me a call on this number and i can give them back to her"
how is that bad?
otherwise im stuck with a coat & phone i dont need.
+ not to mention if i lost my phone i'd be super grateful if anyone gave it back to me

Personally i couldn't care less whether your story is true or whatever, i just want to help you.
If she has blocked the device by using the IMEI code, you will be able to use it but not to make calls, so you should be alright.
If she has put a SIM lock code you will be able to put another SIM inside to get to her contacts (you won't be able to make any calls if she has blocked it through IMEI though)
If she has put a screen code, just look carefully on the screen to see the markings from her finger, you should be able to make out the code that way. Constant unlocking the phone through the years should have left a visible marking there.

lol in all fairness why would i lie!!??
and thanks.
i'll report back when i know what kind of phone it is if i have any problems hoping i wont though :]
although funnily enough i just checked my screen for finger marks to see if i could spot any from entering unlock code and nothing smooth as a button - no marks! anything else you'd suggest for getting past the screen unlock? (as i said hopefully it wont need to, just think its pretty popular feature on smartphones :[ )

When you get your hands on the phone, try that first, if her fingers are any oily you should be able to atleast make out the beginning of the combination, use trial and error for the rest.
If you don't manage to make out the code, there is another option. You can manually edit her lock settings to reset the code, but that requires that you can connect the device to your PC and that the phone has USB debugging enabled.

hmmm im thinking i really would need for it to only have a sim pin or nothing.
if its got screen unlock it's really hard for me to access anything wihtout totally ruining her phone/losing data (which is pointless when i want to give it her back in the 1st place) everything i've searched uses gmail account back up.

Anti-social XDAii's - how to get round it?

Hi there,
I do really like my XDAiis, but the one thing I don't like is that it's a really anti-social hunk of plastic to carry around with you.
I don't mind normally, but say I want to go out at the weekend for some 'disc-dancing' of sorts, I don't want to haul that around, and I especially don't want to leave it in my jacket and put it in cloakrooms - or even just have a massive bulge in my pocket from keeping it there.
My plan was to stick the sim-card into my X70 when I go out - but then, if I do that, it'll wipe the memory from the XDA when I take the battery off.
So, the current way I'm doing it is I've got a simple Pay as you Go sim card which I divert the XDA to - but this is a pain, as i can't divert text messages to it.
Can anyone come up with a better solution?

Are you sure it wipes the memory if the battery is taken out? Like a hard reset? Can someone confirm this please.
Cheers
ps I ask as it was also my plan to take out the SIM and stick in an old phone if I was planning to get smashed....
HPJ
You should have 20 minutes to put the battery back on before the it wipes the memory. That's what the backup battery is for.
You can check the status of that battery using the normal power program. My instruction manuals recommends I never remove the battery if the battery backup is less than 50%, but assuming it was 100%, you have 20 minutes to take out the sim card... Should be enough time
OH!! Cool!!
And I guess it all works fine without the sim card then - or even if it doesn't work - it'll still be in the same state when I chuck the sim back into it again?
Now just got to work out how to unlock the X70 from Orange, so I can use it with 02!!
Thanks for your help.
Jsedit.
True you should have around 20 minutes to play with if the backup battery is fully charged.
Another option would be to speak to O2 and get another simcard - a clone of the one you currently have so to speak..
That way you can leave the sim in the xda and just shutdown the phone bit, will save a lot of faffing around changing sims all the time.
O2 should be able to do it, if they ask why tell them you need a clone sim to put into your car (some have their own built in phone, that just requires a sim) then they may be more willing to do it.
Cheers
Neil
I tried this swifty, but O2 would not play the game. Some providers will provide dual sims, but it seems that none of the UK providers will.
I use a P&G sim in my ancient T68i

hehe, i had my phone out with me to IO in glasgow,
theres around 50mb of videos, plus is had Above & Beyond taking a video up at the deks down to all the clubbers!, there all mp4 though, need to get em onto wmv for me comp.
ill be taking my spv with me to every club now, the punters luv it!
just make sure you have a firm grip though

Dropped One X, now says sim card not found! :(

I'm sorry if this is reposted, however I looked around and couldn't find an issue similar to this.
I dropped my phone while juggling (not literally) groceries earlier and the first thing that came up was an error stating that the sim card was not found. I've taken it out, put it back in, restarted multiple times, etc. I don't know what to do here.. I've rooted and unlocked my phone (used HTCdev for the bootloader) so I don't think I send it in.
I've done a hard reset, but I don't think that is really helping. SO.. now I'm not sure really what my options are. I read that you can't relock your phone after using the HTCdev fix and I'm very noob so I'm not sure if the reset took off my root.
Basically, do any of you guys have any suggestions as to how to move forward from here?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Well coming from a cell repair standpoint, I would at least make sure it can't detect other sim cards before you get drastic. PM me and I'll try and walk you through it.

SO my friend just came over and he has an iPhone (AT&T). We swapped simcards, he called my girlfriend's phone and it worked fine. Still the same problem with my phone though... definitely seems like a hardware issue at this point.
Yeah you probably managed to knock the connector for the slot loose, or it bent the slot a little more than how it already sits. The one x's sim slots are actually really bad. I had to get 3 different sim cards before I got a working one, because the old iphone batch was fractions of a millimeter thinner and didn't sit right.
You could always try to put something on your sim to thicken it and see if that makes it work, but you gotta be careful with that, as you could lose something into your phone like that if you dont attach it to the sim somehow.
I wasn't able to come up with a sim-thickening contraption, which is why i just got new ones.
see if you can find someone with a very new android phone. Chances are they dont have the old iphone sims, and this will give you a better test

Scotch tape will do the job nicely for the sim.
As for ops problem, my daughter dropped her iphone and had the no sim error after. Phone had to be replaced, id call your carrier and get it swapped out.

Cant connect networks! Help please!

So, bought the phone few days ago, and it arrived today. It seemed to work just right, I dont know who the modded the phone, but he did sim mod on it. After putting sim card to the phone it seemed to work just fine, connected to networks and stuff. So I decided to unlock the bootloader and put cyanogenmod on the phone. It worked fine for few hours but now I lost connection to sim card, and I shut down the phone. Took sim card out and put it back in, it did recognize it, but I couldnt contact to any networks, I tried to swapping to GSM only and stuff, but nothing seemed to help. I tried re-flashing CM, but it really didnt help. When I changed the connection type to GSM, it connected to the network for few seconds and then disconnected again. Im gonna try flashing stock rom on but seems like there is something wrong with the phone. Has anyone else had the same problem?
E: Couldnt flash stock rom on the phone using MIUI now and constantly getting messages for "SIM card removed"
So seems like problem is in the sim card holder.
Case of bad luck/coincidence.
Try applying pressure to the SIM (you can remove the back). This way you can find out if it's the holder. I had also had this problem. Not sure if it's a type of holder or just a bad mod. But Cornholio fixed it for me. Contact him, maybe it can be fixed easily. I just sent him my phone since I also had a Photon who needed a new mod.

Probably trying to get the seller to refund to me, seems like he had same problems that I just got but he didnt tell me first, but started to tell me that he had just the same problems earlier. Well, I really wouldnt like to open the phone before I can see what he thinks about the refund.

No need to open the back. Get a very thin knife or something like that. Pry it between the cover and the SIM. it will apply enough pressure to see if that's the problem.

Ready to break this sucker open

Ok, I've been having some network issues, some of you may know. My service cuts off randomly and im quite sick of it. I've tried everything, nothing will fix it. I dont have an extra $400 laying around to RMA it. So, I am at the last resort. Its been fun, its a good phone, but at this point it really doesnt matter to me if i break it. I can get a moto g for $120 thqt will work like it was ment to. I really thunk its something wrong with the phone, I've never had this problem on tmobile before.
Anyway, im ready to crack this thing open and see if i cant fix it on my own. Maybe a connection is lose or something. I've watched a few videos, looks easy, ive popped my N72013 open so i im not worried.
Now, would anyone have any ideas what it could be? It acts like its a grounding issue, i can do just about anything, but when i download a rom, app, stream a video, anything that maxes out my internet, the service just completely drops, and says "no service" but usually comes back on after a few seconds. Sometimes the whole phone reboots. But, if is use 3g i never have any problems
So, any ideas on what to look for inside the phone? I was gonna unplug the wire for 4G and 3G, inspect maybe dust it off, and plug it back in.
If anyone has any ideas please fill me in. Thanks for your time.

They don't cash the 400 bucks, they just put a hold on it, I did it recently via a credit card, and the charge was quickly reversed.
I'd recommend replacing it, if you still don't want to do it (because of money), go directly through LG they'll have you send in the device and they'll fix it for you.
What you're suggesting is a last resort when you're out of warranty

Yes, I've fastboot flashed stock 4.4.4, 4.4.3, 4.4.2, 4.4, tried different kernels, roms, called tmobile numerous times, changed sim cards, gone to different areas in town, you name it, I've probably tried it.
I had a similar problem with my nexus 5 it would be on LTE most of the time but after a few minutes of watching YouTube it would switch to h/h+/3g I did RMA through T-Mobile and this new one hasn't done it if you don't have a warranty your only choice is to replace the antenna or the radio hardware
So you are willing to buy a Moto G but not deal with Google RMA? RMA is free, a hold on your credit card is just that, nothing is charged unless you plan on skipping town with the 2nd Nexus.
Google support is one of the best in the business. They do everything they can possibly do to make your RMA as quick and painless as possible by cross shipping you the replacement device. If you have an issue with Google's RMA then you must have never been forced to RMA something before.
Its not that i have an issue with rma, its just, by the time i save up $400 and they ship me the new one, this phone will be obsolete anyway. The battery life isnt that good, its starting to get lcd bleed, ive read many people go through 5+ device and have the same issues. Im not saying its a bad phone, its the best phone ive ever had and ive had many good android phones im just saying, at this point it doesnt seem worth the time and effort, its like a 50/50 shot that ill get a good one.

It's like you're not listening...
It's a hold, not a charge.
ALSO.
LG (directly) will FIX / REPLACE FOR FREE. NO HOLDS YOU JUST SEND IT IN FIRST.

Nope... not even going to try anymore
Please dont. You obviously dont get the point of my post.
Not sure if I know the point of your post either, but another option is sending your N5 for RMA first (that way there's no hold on your account at all) and wait for them to send you a new one. You can even buy a moto g use it for the week or two you won't have a phone and return it or something.
I understand that you're trying to see if anyone knows what's wrong but to me it's like a needle in a haystack. You're going to be opening up the device to look for a loose connection, but it could be something completely different. Maybe it's a hardware part that is malfunctioning in which case you would need to track down a replacement. This is why everyone is suggesting you just RMA because, speaking from experience, it really isn't a bad experience at all. If you really want to try and fix it yourself of course you're free to do as you wish since it is your device, but I highly doubt anyone on the forum will be able to say for sure what the problem is.
Sounds like you're in a fringe 4g area like me. A few blocks away I get full 4g. On my block, I get almost nothing. I constantly drops 4g, then picks it back up again.
I get a full lte signal nearly everywhere i go, it doesnt just drop 4g, it drops all service completely

How to find owner of lost phone

Found an iPhone 8 Plus on the road side. Can't figure out an easy way to contact the owner because the phone has no sim card and there is no carrier logo. The phone seems to have been reset though, because it's currently on a "welcome screen" where it asks for the preferred language. The phone is in pristine condition and has no scratch marks. The case (which is broken) may have protected it when it fell. I'm currently thinking of pasting posters around the neighbourhood it was found in.
Are there better ways to get in contact with the owner of the phone?
By the way, can you guys give me an idea on why the owner did not put a simcard in it? I did something similar on an Xperia phone but I did it for evaluation purpose (switching from an older phone). Is there a way to remotely reset a phone without sim card?
TIA

I think the best way to help the owner is to give the phone to the police.
You can always ask to Siri who's this phone belongs to but I don't think it will work .
Just go to the police station , when the owner will realize, he will go to the police station and ask if someone bring his phone here.
We tried bringing it to the police station, but the officer present there did not accept it and told us to dial a number instead. But the number only lead to dead-end. It's an automated number that quickly disconnects after getting to a certain point. We tried a few days thinking it may work the next days but still got the same results.
After waiting almost 2 months for the owner to get in touch (via the posters) we thought we should try using the phone and see how it works. As I tried to go through the setup process, I learned the phone had been locked to a certain email address (masked) and can only be set up by the person who knows the email. This now gives me an idea the phone may have been stolen from the owner. The person who got it may have removed the sim card to avoid getting traced and decided to reset the phone. But the phone requires the valid email address to proceed, so the person decided to throw it away.
Considering the above, I believe Apple may have something in place to facilitate the return of the phone to the owner. Can you guys point me to the right direction?
