[Q] Q about rooting a contract phone with insurance - HTC Sensation

Hey guys, I'm considering going with they option of rooting my HTC Sensation, but I'd like to clear something up beforehand.
At the moment Im on a pay monthly contract with my HTC Sensation and I pay monthly for insurance on the handset, before I go rooting my phone, if for some reason I need to send this phone off to my provider will my insurance be void? Or is this just the case if I haven't managed to return the phone to stock setup?
Id really like to try rooting my phone, but I dont want to have the problem of not being able to send the phone off for repairs or whatnot in the future. By repairs, obviously Im not referring to any problem that could occur during the rooting process, I mean more in the sense of hardware issues etc.
Any help is appreciated, and I apologise if this has been asked/answered before, I did do a forum search but found nothing.
Thanks.

You can S-Off your device without unlocking the bootloader over HTCdev. This way you can root and flash custom ROMs/kernels without loosing your warrenty.
If you have issues and you have to send the phone in, you can just run an RUU for you phone and S-On it again. Nobody would know that you have rooted it.
And if you want to S-Off take a look at the Hboot version! Hboot 1.2x has a different and more difficult way of S-Off'ing.

Oh right, how would I go about S-off'ing my phone? Would it still require me to go through the whole root process first off?
Thanks for your help

First we have to know your H boot version to direct you to the proper guide. To find out, pull battery, put battery back in, then at the same time press power and volume down button. Hold. Then you will see a screen pop up. Look at the information on Top of the screen. Then tell us your H Boot version. by the
Way, I also pay insurance every month on my device and I'm rooted and S off. If anything should happen I would restore back to stock and S on again. This way they would not know device was rooted. Hope this helps.

Just did as you asked and my H boot version is 1.27.0000. That is what I was curious about, the whole insurance deal.
My main reason for considering rooting is to be able to theme my phone a bit more than what a launcher lets me, so what is recommended for this, just rooting, just S-off'ing or both?
Thanks

Both process are reversible, once its s-off and rooted, just dont change your hboot and your good to go. I had the same concern, yet when i needed to return my phone for the warranty, they never even cared and sent me the other one without question (after i turned back the s-on of course). Follow Ganesh's guide here: https://www.google.com/url?q=http:/...ds-cse&usg=AFQjCNGNDWtlRFM7pBTIlQr-Y6Vd4nJEgw
Very easy and completely safe!
BoB!!

I suggest rooting and S off. I don't regret it for a second! I try all kinds of awesome roms and I'm able to customize to exactly how I want things! It's been a totally positive experience for me. As I mentioned in above post, I too pay the extra insurance monthly. If there we're a issue I'd return to stock. As above member mentioned he did it and didn't have any problems. I think once your rooted and s off you will be very happy. But do take the extra effort to s off because it's worth it in the long run and makes things easier for you, You will have the ability to do more with s off. Best wishes.

Oh right, thanks you guys. I now feel more able to go ahead and root, now I just need to decide whether I think Im capable of doing it correctly.
Just had a look at that link you posted BobThaBear, it looks abit on the daunting side so Im going to have a long, hard think about it first.
Thanks for all of the help though, its very much appreciated

I have Tmo's Premium Handset Protection Plan and I'm a bit uneasy about rooting.

Should I be? Does it effect the plan at all if I root? I'm scared, which is weird because I've rooted my other 3 android phones.... >_<

LOL I thought the same thing. I have the same protection plan, and it made me uneasy about rooting for a while. I eventually did it and won't look back. I'm absolutely sure it voids your protection, so I'm probably going to cancel it soon. I think it's worth it to do what you want with this phone, and you have to make a personal decision what you value more. Do you take the risk and give up guaranteed protection or do you let your phone stay in its underperforming stock state and enjoy guaranteed protection? I experienced my first boot loop today; it scared the hell out of me, but my phone ended up being just fine and I still won't look back haha.
Cant you just un-root and s-on your phone if you need to use the warranty?
Yes

yes you can revert back to stock and turn revert s-off back to s-on. just read and re-read the guide over there in the htc sensation android development forum. its stikied so you can find it on the first page. the first post has everything you need even a how to to turn s-on.
I have tmobile as well, just do your self a favor and make a sensation folder on your desktop, and in it include a folder labeled stock. Download the stock rom and radio if you replace it and keep a link to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
since this guide will show you how to root it in only a few mins and how to also revert it back to stock.
I already used this twice and was able to do a swap out at my local store since i was within my 14 days grace period

rooting n new rom for thunderbolt???

Hi ! Well technically im not new to the forum b/c i have a nexus one and use that ... part of the forum a lot but im tryin to help a friend right now.. He has a thunderbolt, and got it pretty close to initial release. He's had many problems with it like periodic need of restarts, and losing like a decent portion of is battery AFTER restart (example before start, 50%, after restart, 40-45%...), text msging problems like (example... "Hi" to John Doe, *send*... it does not appear in the window, go back to the messaging home screen... u see "Hi" sent to Harry Potter instead.. doesnt happen a lot but business wise, once or twice can cause the lost of business... =/ luckily clients have forgave him so far...
and of cos theres like other problems thats hes been experiencing but those are two that came to mind just now..
so wondering, what procedures to help him root/flash a new rom so he can get a better and faster use of his phone (OH another thing, its working quite slow... D i was lookin around the thunderbolt forum, theres roms like synergyrom and of cos cm7 that are really popular.. then reading in some areas, using the revolutionary method is a good way to start to..root? is the revolutionary method the way to get the bootloader or what.. lol yah im noob >_> surprising i got cm7 on my n1 lol
Many people would ***** at ya for not reading the stickies... naughty naughty. In any case yes you want revolutionary. And yes it provides s-off and an unlocked bootloader. Alternatively for the random SMS problem you can just download an alternate messaging app. I use chomp. If I helped ya hit the thanks!
My name is Revos I'm a recovering flashaholic running Liquid Gingerbread 3.0
All your questions answered Here
i actually did read it.. just didnt really understand it cuz it was different then how it was done for my nexus one...
If there are parts that you do not completely understand go ahead and ask specific questions. Nobody will be upset if you are trying to make sure you know what your doing. Which parts did you not understand?
so what i understand so far... you need to obtain S-Off and unlocked boot loader..
theres a few ways in obtaining that? mr1/ota permroot or revolutionary.. there are people saying revolutionary (or the quick n easy way) has a higher chance in bricking phone.. is that true? b/c i wanna use the way that has the lowest or one of the lower chance to brick the phone.. Yah i want it done fast but i want it done the safest way too.. was reading the instructions and it says it uses the clockwork recovery.. iirc.. there was between clockwork and amun-ra ??
for the most part it looks kind of similar to the process i did with my nexus one..
after it being rooted and having the bootloader... do i just look for those custom firmware packages like uhm cm7 or synergy (or what do you people recommend that you like??) and flash it from sd card in bootloader??
Of all the reading I did about revolutionary I didnt notice anyone bricking their phone. I'm not saying it didn't happen, but it seemed to run smooth for most everyone that followed the directions.
You will install CCW while your running the revolutionary.
And to answer your last question, yes you will just download whatever rom you choose to the root of your sdcard, flash it from recovery.
*sigh* friend hesistant to get it done because he has insurance on the phone... guess ill wait until he's willing ahaha thx for the help !
All the more reason to root. Worst case he bricks it. If he doesn't brick it he will learn how much more fun and enjoyable the Tbolt is with the ability to flash new roms, or change whatever he wants.
Insurance covers phones "accidentally" dropped into the toilet...
yah hes worried if it gets bricked.. hes all for the fixing ...
The only way you are going to brick your phone is if you don't follow the directions. Just make sure you do a nandroid backup through the bootloader and go from there. If your friend is to afraid to do it I'm sure you can check Craigslist for people to root it for you. I'd do it for you but I don't know if the forum allows it.

Tell him to grow some and root. Hes gonna have to eventually do it anyways to avoid issues like hes been having. Of he does an insurance claim they're just gonna send him a refurbished one and who's to say all the issues were solved with that one after it was sent back? I don't get how people can complain, ask for help and then be reluctant. Whatever you do make sure you sit him down and walk him through it otherwise if he has any issues he'll be calling and blaming you. Been there and laughed and laughed. Good luck.

I'm ashamed to admit it, but I'm in the same boat almost. I still haven't rooted and rom'd yet for similar reasons. That said, I'm pretty close, especially with the logging fiasco. From what I've read, there haven't been any legit reports of bricking due to Revolutionary, at least used correctly. Most people say it's only when you try an old method of rooting or otherwise don't follow directions.

Trust me... It's a LOT less scary after you do it than before. I've helped walk some people through the old ADB method with success and Revolutionary is idiot proof by comparison.

There are good number of threads out there that can help you, I recommend searching. In short, any time you're going to send your phone in to AT&T, it's a good idea to unroot and install a stock RUU. I'm not 100% on the rules or whatever, but rooting voids warranty and if AT&T sees it they may reject your warranty claim, assuming you go the route to send it in. Search for Gene's tool to unroot, or use the AAHK (I believe there is a step in there to unroot). I've used Gene's tool and I know it works fine.
The only alternative I can think of is taking it to a 3rd party to have it fixed. You probably won't have to unroot then but if you're paying for insurance you might as well use it and not pay out of pocket..unless of course the fix would be relatively cheap but honestly can't see that being the case. Hope that helps!
If the phone is under manufacters warranty then spend the $5 for shipping to have to sent to the HTC department address they give you. Its much cheaper and a better route to go than yo have ATT charge you $150 for the phone insurance coverage. I had to send mine in. I unrooted it and put it back to complete stock. That was all I needed to do. Because they never said my warranty was voided when they received my phone upon looking at it and testing it, or whatever they do.
So just unroot and return to complete stock and you'll be fine.

My S-ON tool will work without USB. Just get it on your SD card somehow (via adapter, or download from phone):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1208507
I talked to ATT today and they gave me the number for the warranty replacement hotline. I've noticed that my phone has become increasingly hard to turn on via the power button (Its become slightly recessed), the battery door doesn't fit onto the phone, making the top volume key hard to press, and the vibration feels as if something has become lose inside the device.
My question is, what if when the manufacturers test the device, they decide that nothing was initially wrong. Will I get some sort of weird bill?
My device is completely spotless, minus the details mentioned above.

[Q] Bricked?!? Need help!

I think I bricked my phone, but wanted to check here first. Needed to send device back for warranty service, but may have just hosed myself. Was running new ICS FW 3.24 and testing ARHD & IC ROMS without issue.
I set my CID back to T-MOB010 as device was originally with ADB. Rebooted into bootloader and verified the updated CID was shown and it was.
Now this is where I think I choked....
I meant to flash RUU to take back to stock, but got my steps mixed up and did the fastboot command to put S-On back onto the device. Now the damn thing won't even boot up....black and no signs of life. My PC can no longer see it either.
Any suggestions or should I give up hope because of hat one mis-step?!?
I know you have probably done all this but heres what I would do. I would take the battery out then put it back in then hold volume down and power on and see if hboot will turn on. If hboot won't turn on your bricked. sorry dude. Also if you would have ran a stock RUU it would have s-on your phone as it would have flashed stock hboot I believe.

Sorry i think your only chance is Warranty !!
If your provider is tmobile I have a fun fact for ya. There going to ask you 3 questions after they waste an 30 minutes of your time trying to trouble shoot "it just won't turn on". They ask you, is it in one piece(yes)? Is there any physical damage(no)? Are the water indicators white(yes)? Is the battery damaged(no)? If you answer correctly they'll send you out a new phone right then and there. If you lie and send your old one back and lets say it's been ran over, they'll charge your account full price for the phone. When the new one arrives you send the old one back. They never ask about rooting or anything of that nature, so your not telling them any lies. NICE. Also they're going to ask a bunch about the battery on the phone. They're hoping just your battery is ****ed up. To speed past this step tell them you have a second HTC battery made for the Sensation that doesn't work either.
Yes, it won't even go to HBOOT now, so I'm pretty sure I'm toast. Thanks for the replies!

Thinking about getting this phone

As I said I am thinking about getting this phone but I am worried after reading around that doing the whole htcdev token thing for opening it up for root voids your warranty. So my questions are...
1. Can it be reversed?
2. Can tmobile tell too? Even if it can be reversed?
3. Has anyone tried to see if this works http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1578908
4. Does htcdev get you s-off?
5. What is s-off?
Sent from my NexusHD2 using XDA
1. Yes and no. The bootloader can be re-locked, but as with all HTC devices, once you've unlocked it, there's signs that you did. Mine says *TAMPERED* for example once I rooted it. I don't think that'll ever go back.
2. T-Mo can tell if you bring it into the store. It doesnt take much work. All they gotta do is load the bootloader.
3. I have no idea, but my guess is that the end-result is the same as #1. The method you've linked in no way hints at being "secretive" about the unlock. I'd also not recommend you use it, since it's not necessarily a tried and true way. Following HTCdev.com's process IS however a tried and true way. I mean -- why NOT use the official HTC route?
4. No, HTCdev does NOT get you S-OFF. I have no idea what does, but you can still load CWM recovery, root, and load ROMs with S-ON anyways. Only reason you need S-OFF is if you start messing with paritions, which I wouldn't recommend unless you know what youre doing and are prepared to accept the consequences.
5. S-OFF lets you mess with partitions as far as I can tell. It may do more, but I'm not sure. I'm brand new to HTC phones (my first phone was a Nexus S).
Keep in mind with all of this, that your worries about unlocking are pretty much useless. Keep in mind -- if you're needing to send your phone in for warranty repair, you're 99% likely sending it in for HARDWARE repair. HTC and other mfr's (Samsung too) generally will honor your warranty if the cause is obvious (vol button breaks, capacitive buttons break, etc).
And if you're unlocking your phone, chances are any software problems you have are going to be taken care of by YOU anyways. Keep that in mind.
Cheers, and happy flashing!
