Battery calibration

I think there is some problem with my battery stats, The battery level randomly drops by some 15 % in two hours when the phone is not even in use!. Think its because i flashed too many roms...
I researched and found out that recalibrating the battery would help. I have to charge till 100%, go into recovery , wipe battery stats and then let the phone die, And again charge till 100% then let it die again.
Is there a simpler way to do it and the Nexus never charges till 100%, So what am i supposed to do?
Wipe battery stats when the nexus says its fully charged?.'
Can someone help me with the exact steps?

I am assuming that you have root since you said you're a flashaholic. Download Battery Calibration from the market and that should simplify the task.
Not all roms show 1% battery discharge. And flashing roms day in day out doesn't allow the roms and your battery to get acquainted with each other. After calibrating your battery, allow it to settle.

Battery Calibration - Once and for all!

I have read every possible thread you can imagine on battery calibration and can never seem to do this correctly, is it a myth? No matter what I do, if I restart my phone, I end up going from 100% down to 85-86% EVERY SINGLE time.
This is after "bumping it". (letting it drain all the way to 0% and then fully charging again).
This is after using BATTERY CALIBRATION in the market which was told works well. (again, advises you charge to 100% then "calibrate" it via the APP).
This is after charging it to 100% and restarting it, recharging up to 100%, restarting and recharging (repeat, repeat, repeat), and then going into bootloader and wiping battery stats.
None of these have worked, does someone have a sure fire EXACT way to do this properly or is at ALL just hype? Help.

Your battery will never say 100% after a reboot. It sucks up a lot of juice on a power up and the battery doesn't charge during powering on. I usually drop about 10% on a reboot using the rezound battery. That is normal behavior. If you can charge to 100% with the phone on then you're fine.

Interesting because I've never lost 15-16% consistently although I guess it using some juice to cycle makes sense. Anyone else seen 10+ every restart? Thanks for the help man in either case.

Hmm, never seen this before. On my phone which is running skyraider uc to 768mhz and uv only loses 1percent on reboot or doesn't even lose charge at all. Not sure why your phone is doing that.

I am running G3D uc to 768mhz and on restart I may lose 1 - 5% at most depending on if i made any changes that take a longer restart. I bet you are overclocked? no need, under clock to 768mhz and your phone will run as smooth as 1.2mhz..maybe smoother while using less battery

Running liquid 3.2.1 on my T-Bolt with the Rezound battery and I only lose 1% battery at boot up. Never lost more...oh and I have never calibrated my battery. Also I get about 8-10 hours of moderate to heavy use too. All stock clocks btw

Just to double check - or reword... do it this way - if you aren't already.
Charge to 100%.
Wipe Batt stats
Drain to zero without recharging in any way (AKA let it drain until it shuts off on you).
Recharge until 100% (till it says 100%, not just "green."). And unplug.
And you're good! Try that and check back in.

Battery Calibration doesn't work

Ignore the % number, it means nothing. Use the battery monitor widget or another program that will show you the actual battery voltage. A fully charged battery will be somewhere around 4200 mV and a discharged battery between 3600 and 3200 mV. I've also noticed that the rezound battery throws things off as the mAh rating doesn't match up to either of the thunderbolt batteries. This is why the battery monitor widget shows the rezound battery as 2750 mAh instead of 1620.

What I recommend to my Evo peeps [which I have] is this:
-Charge battery to 100%
-Wipe battery stats in recovery
-Let the battery drain, so it manually powers off
-Charge to 100% again, and good to go

By this I mean Google Developers have came out recently and said battery calibration does not increase or have any effect on the state of battery life. All wiping the battery stats does is wipe the stats as to what has been using the battery, etc.
still handy for when you flash a new rom to wipe the stats, but it doesn't improve battery life at all.

Actually, the post from Dianne @ Google said nothing about calibration. She only talked about wiping or deleting the battery stats file.

You are correct, however all the battery calibration apps available only delete the battery stats file. So like I said it doesn't affect battery life.

This is what I thought I had done but will do again. The problem is even after its 100% and in between your 1st and 2nd step when I reboot into recovery, it's no longer at 100% and sometimes down to 85%ish. I will try again tho, thanks!

Yeah I read that too. But when I flashed my first rom on the tb I got abysmal battery life. 25% in like 20 min. I recalibrated and it got so much better. If its a placebo its a good one.

all that says is the the deleting the batterybin file doesn't help. The battery is handled by each by software outside of android itself. So, following the battery calibration from the manufacturer of your phone still might help.

25% in 20 minutes means nothing. The % is an estimated number. Find an app that reads the battery voltage if you want a true reading on the battery's charge. Full is 4.2 volts, dead is between 3.0 - 3.6 volts. Battery life should only be measured in hours from full to dead. I've seen my phone stick on 100% for several hours before as well as sticking at 20% for several hours. Ignore the %. Anyone spending all day looking at a % to judge their battery life should go back to a battery indicator that doesn't show %.

Battery issues! Running out of ideas. Can someone help? (SOLVED)

I can't seem to figure out whats wrong with my phone. I have a draining issue with my battery and i don't know if my battery indicator is not accurate. I used odin and went back to stock on a full indicated battery. Then I flashed VB and adrenaline shots 1.4-1 and camera tweak and scrolling mod and booted the phone and let set for 10 minutes before I reloaded all my apps. My battery was indicating it was at 100% ok so i unplugged the battery and wham it dropped to 79% plugged it back in and it started charged from where it left off at 79%. After a few min and the phone goes to sleep mode and indicates 100% i unplug the phone and it charged from where it left off at 79%. So i kept unplugging it and plugging it back in every few minutes till i got to 100%. So sounds ok now but i had to reboot my system and wham again down to 79% and even with the uv settings my battery drains fast. I tried calibrating the battery and also charged it with the phone being off and no results. All I want is a full charge as I work long shifts lol. thanks and i hope this is understandable the way i tried to describe it.
Also Thanks to the devs on here who dedicate their time to making this device do what it was meant to do..

Try letting the phone die completely. After about ten minutes power it back on then let it die completely again. Leave it off for an hour then plug into wall charger. Let it charge to 100% while off. After it hits 100% unplug it and leave it sit for an hour while off. Then turn it on and use normally.

Not to contradict hechoen - but take note that Samsung recommends against completely discharging your battery in the manual for the phone.

+1 (edit: on previous calibration routing)
also you may try to "jump start" MAX17042 (fuel gauge) chip... when your phone at 100% on a charger (verify this by looking at battery voltage - OS Monitor / Misc tab. or other similar apps) - voltage should be around 4.15 - 4.2V. When you disconnect charger - what would be the voltage then? If around 4.0V then may be your battery is going south.
To "jump start" FG - turn off the phone, pull battery out and wait for 5 - 10 min. - just to be sure internal circuits got completely discharged.
When you install battery, FG chip will use "average" model for new lipo... see if it makes difference.

Yeah I've heard that this kind of batteries last longer if charged continuously (short and often charges) instead of full charges after letting it die. Something about battery cycles or some.
I'd recommend fully charging and battery calibration from market. Also, reflash rom but not tweaks yet, and see how it behaves. Then install tweaks/mods and see if the battery continues to decrease rapidly. If it does, get an app for battery info, check its health.. Your battery might be dying for good.

Google has also debunked the battery calibration myth. There is a thread about it in the General Section with a link to the article.
To add to the recommendations...
Check how often your phone is set to sync. Big battery drainer. Auto starting apps. And display brightness.

if all fails you could try to reflash and see if that fixes it

Wait, I didn't say battery calibration is going to make your battery last longer. It doesn't do that.
But it's a fact that after installing a rom a battery calibration is needed. Normally, developers code their install scripts to perform a battery calibration when installing the rom, so this is not needed afterwards, I still do it anyways when charging the first time to 100%.
I for one had the issue for the first time when installing a rom (don't remember which one) and after rebooting or shutting down the phone, the battery would go from >90% to <20% for no reason at all. Someone here at XDA suggested battery calibration app (or, manually at CWM/advanced, clear battery stats) and the issue was gone. Maybe the rom is misreading battery data and that could cause this kind of issues... which a battery calibration would fix it.
Just saying.. if there's an option for it in CWM, then chances are it is needed for some reason!

Indeed. It's on our wiki, too, under the batterystats.bin Buzz Word entry.

So i think I needed to do a factory reset. I re flashed vahnilla black and then did a factory reset in the rom. Before I re flashed the rom I
had 60% as soon I restarted the phone on the freshly flashed rom it dropped to 1% then I did a factory restart within the rom and when I rebooted the battery indicated 20% and I am in 16% charge now, only went down 4% within the last 6 hours. So I will run it till it dies tonight and charge it with the phone off to see the results tomorrow.

No contradiction at all. You shouldn't fully discharge all the time. But once in a while it's actually good for the battery. Especially lithium ion. Take a look at this. For those of you who don't like to read that much just skip to the bottom.

no actually raver answered a few questions for me through pm. but hechoen thank you and i will do that when my battery is fully charged. thanks again to everyone for the info! will update tomorrow!

I fully charged my battery last night while it being off and let it sit for a hour before turning it on. Well great seemed to now indicate it's fully charged after a hour I threw on adrenaline shots 14-1 with camera and scrolling mod. Let it air for 30min went into recoveryand fix perms. When I rebooted the phone the battery dropped again from 80 to 60 and then went back up to 75. Then I rebooted again it dropped to 25% and then I rebooted again and now it indicates 59% I believe this battery is heading south. What do you guys think?

Also calibrating your battery should be done occasionally. Not to somehow make your battery last longer, but to clear out the old data and use new data to show your batteries usage. Just like resetting the computer in your car that shows average MPG. Fresh input will give you a better idea of what your car is getting today and same goes for your battery stats.

I have calibrated the battery. Everything seems to of been working fine until I added adrenaline shots. Once I rebooted after installing adrenaline shots my battery started acting up again. I pulled the battery out for 10 min and popped back in and now I'm indicating 56% after 4 hours of heavy use with wifi on. :/

Is this a factory battery? Or a aftermarket ebay/amazon battery?
Im sure people will disagree but some of those aftermarket batteries are not the greatest quality.
Do you live in a town that had a battery store, like the interstate battery shop or something of the likes? Most of those places can do a brief diagnostic of the battery and tell you if it is bad. Or if you have a volt meter fully charge it and test it that way.
It really sounds like the battery is being stupid. There should not be any reason installing A.S. could cause a instant battery drain. If that were the case your phone would be so hot you could not hold it. Because draining that much juice in that little of time would indicate you have a short or something of that nature.

Hello. This issue has been going on for a while now. But when I take my phone off the charger when its not fully charged. The battery percentage keeps going up. For example if I unplug it at 78%, the percentage will gradually go up to like 86-88%. Can anyone give me a hint as to why its doing this? Thanks!

Battery stats are wonked out.
Do you have Clockwworkmod recovery installed? Or is this a pure stock unrooted?
EDIT: Mr. Jacob, what are you tense about? LOL ! Just kidding....

Try using an app called battery calibration (can be found in the app market) when the phone is fully charged. This will reset all the battery stat logs and set your 100% to a true 100%

I have clockwork installed. I'm running SkyICS rom. And I have already tried battery calibration.
PS: And nothing really xD its been my screen name since the early Xbox days

Battery calibration does nothing. Normally I wouldn't recommend that u COMPLETELY drain the skyrocket battery as its lithium based and can cause dead cells, yours needs calibrating, and wiping battery stats or using a battery calibration app won't help (both of these are myths by the way, Google if). Use phone until its completely dead, and won't turn on at all, only vibrate with a black screen. Then charge phone for a continuous 8 hours uninterrupted, that should fix it

As a first try, charge to 100%. Then go into CWM recovery and wipe battery stats. It should be good to go....On ICS, thsi seems to fix it for me.
IF you then stilll have weird battery problems a proper recallibration will be in order.
I had to just wipe battery stats when charged to 100%. DON'T just wait for 100%. Alow the phone to get to fully charged.....if you have "Full Charge" notification on your ROM wait for that.

charging to 100% and letting it sit for at least an hour even after full charge notification is the best way. Wiping battery stats in cwm won't actually do anything though, thats a myth.

Actually, for lithium ion batteries, it is not recommended to let them discharge to zero. It's better to run it down to 10% or so (i usually do about 5%). and then charge it completely. Rinse and repeat over a few days, and there should be a difference.

What a revelation !! It's like realising my religion is all wrong !
BUT, BUT, BUT : reading the whole battery stats discussion, it i also clear that the business of charging for an hour after 100% is also not worthwhile, but is just a customer gimmick to make people feel thier batteries are topped off. This was started by HTC and the consensus is that is also does not help.
The simple solution is to let the battery go through 2-3 charge-discharge cycles.

I had this same issue with my Exynos G2, my problem was flashing different roms or putting a theme on. My fix came not by wiping battery stats but only doing flashes at 100% and plugged in. I never noticed it on my SR though. I'm not saying don't try what the others say, just giving you more options.

I m facing a wierd prob on my device from last 3 days and its about my battery. its not about how frequently my battery is Draining. When i charged my Mobile fully to 100% and Reboot the device , after reboot the Battery comes to 93%. same when my device was on 35% and after reboot it came down to 3% WTF.
I thought its battery callibaration prob. i was on DDLF2 when this prob occured so i made Full Flash using XXKPE--> XXKPQ. But still prob Persisted. Then i used a app Called Battery Callibration From market By "Nema" and follow the Procedures as mentioned by app to callibrate my battery. bt still the prob persist.
one more thing , after doing 100% charge the app showed battery has 4185 mV of charge and After the reboot the perc. came down to 93% then app showed the battery still had 4122 mV but with 93%.
im currently on Stock XXKPQ

I'm having this problem aswell. Don't you worry, its quite offten appear after flashing. Use your phone as usual ant and your battery stats get normal after couple weeks. Don't do any calibrations, android does it by himself.

Charge to 100%, drain to 5-10%, charge to 100%. Repeat a few times. This is battery calibration, the app does not work.

I feel battery calibration is most rediculous method that android users have to do. A dumb nokia 3310 can show us accurate battery indicator even if we reboot it 100 times.
Google developers really have to concentrate on this battery part.

If you use your device with no flashing whatsoever, it will always show right battery stats, you can't flash your damn nokia 3310

It is normal for a newly flashed ROM. I always had 20% drain after reboot after new flashes. It's normal if:
1. Newly flashed rom - let the android calibrates itself.
2. Fully charged battery which was left attached to the power source for sometime. Battery discharges itself quietly despite it showing 100%.

Common, indeed, but it has been exacerbated by this rom. I have the same problem

Probably you need a new battery...there's a limit to how many charges...happened to me, my battery was no more than 12 months old...try this..charge with the phone on till 100%, then shut down the phone, charge with phone off till 100%..switch on the phone and if you do not get 100%, repeat the process until you have 100%...

me too, when my phone fully recharge (showing 100%),I reboot it. after I reboot it shows 92%
