Phone has finally been damaged from one of many drops (happy story!) - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Perhaps this phone has been gifted with reasonably resilient shell materials, or its design absorbs shock in a decent fashion before the more sensitive external and/or internal components experience significant damage, or my case has been a helpful choice for my clumsy lifestyle . . . or, possibly, I am simply quite fortunate.
Whichever the reason(s) at play, this phone has fortunately survived the many drops, slams and even accidental tosses that have seen it crash onto concrete and tarmac surfaces from a few to many feet of airborne freedom. Yay for any or some of the reasons above, I suppose.
Nonetheless, my luck ran out and damage has finally been the natural result of a somewhat forgetful, clumsy owner who otherwise does attempt to keep this expensive, uninsured device reasonably safe from serious harm.
Please note that my phone is usually fully within the holster component of its Amzer Shellster casing, but a child who claims to be my own progeny recently placed it on top of various papers and a business backpack in my car's passenger seat during a quick trip to swimming lessons. Normally not a problem, but the phone's case is flat black and my backpack is likewise tinted, so when I later pulled the pack from that seat in order for my Galaxy S III-owning spouse to sit in that seat for a later trip, my unholstered phone was launched into jet-like flight . . . almost fully across the asphalt driveway towards our sporadically grassy lawn . . . but, not quite.
You could hear the heavy, sharply defined *CRACK*, despite the distance of my phone hitting tens of feet away. It truly flew. And crashed on its top-most edge with the display facing down.
This is the result. Horrors? Should the casing materials have been made from something iPhone-ish to avoid damage? Whatever shall I do?

. . .
Oh, . . . guess I'll just consider that minor blemish to add a sense of personal identity for the phone and move on.
Gee, that was anti-climactic (fortunately). And, thus far, all of the loud falls this phone has encountered have been relatively disaster-free, so I'm hoping that trend continues for at least the full two years I hope to own it with Verizon services.
Much sympathy to those who see their screens cracked, buttons drop out and such; this post was intended to show that the phone appears enabled to handle abuse in a practical manner for many situations, even though some will necessarily lead to more dire results.

You are a VERY BRAVE guy! I am scared to death of dropping mine and I do have insurance on it. I know that the insurance is a rip off, but the monthly premium and deductible are easier for me to come up with than to have to buy another phone outright.
I would seriously suggest that you get a Otterbox Defender the way that your phone takes abuse, lol.

Good point, I did look into that product when shopping for cases, but the Amzer fit somewhat better with how I tend to wear and use the holster.
I'm usually quite particular with how to handle the phone, not sure why so many accidents have cropped up since owning it, admittedly. Must be getting old.

You know I said that before too years ago then at that time my smartphone shorted out the charging port and thankfully since I had insurance I got a shiny new one for free. This was when smartphones that weren't a blackberry were far too expensive for their own good. All in all I regret not having it now since I swapped to a Tbolt and am terrified if and when I get a g3 since it will be uninsured. I cringe looking at all the shattered screens on these things

Just a side note: the Otterbox Defender series is just too darned big/heavy/bulky. I went with the "Sky Blue" Commuter series, and a "KoolCase" holster for about $9 off ebay. It's not much bigger than the original GS3, considering my Bionic inside a Defender looked like an armored tank and was definitely a chick repellant when you wore it on your hip/belt.
I can easily say that I could do just about anything but drive over it with a truck and I'd be just fine. The defender is a bit of overkill (unless of course you plan on running over it with a truck, then it's a good investment).
Otterbox has one of the best replacement policies I've ever seen in the industry: I was doing some geocaching one day with my Bionic and of course had the phone out of the holster so I could effectively use the GPS - in and around the marsh and woods (I live in the Cape Romain National Forest on the Atlantic Ocean) and on my way back to the car realized that the holster was nowhere to be found. I called them up, they asked me to crack open the clam-shell and read them the code off the inside that said when/where it was made to insure that I wasn't BS'ing them, and shipped me a whole new unit - no questions asked.
That's pretty darned good these days when most people won't give you the time of day for less than a dolly.

You're a brave man for using that case

I've had that same experience with Otterbox, they replaced the whole thing twice for me (broken belt clip on the holster once, and the 2nd time it was the clip-point on the phone case that broke, wouldn't hold the phone in anymore unless the screen faced out). I've had mixed experience with Seidio, they replaced a case for my old Incredible when the belt clip broke, but wouldn't for my Thunderbolt when the same thing happened. That being said, I like my Seidio active & holster on my S3.
Also, don't take it for gospel that an otterbox will protect your phone from any drop, as your screen will definitely shatter in one if it hits in a particular way, I have a shattered Moto Razr here at work (3 days old even, 1.5' drop to the floor, just happened to land on something on the floor). Even with their screen cover, it's not going to take a hit to the screen and survive...

I like my kraken ams case more than the defender. I like that it has a substantial lip to protect my screen. Only thing I did not like was the bulk at first but I got used to it.

That was a very long story for just a ding on the phone. Consider yourself fortunate.

Im a contractor I use the otter box commuter case with a generic drop in pouch works well for me. I'm in a hostile work place for a phone as I do athletic floors, gyms arena ect...
thanks for the help
I am in the army and spend alot of time in the deserts of new mexico and el paso texas. This is the case that i use and swear by. It has one cover that snaps onto your phone and you slide that into the holster. It protects the screen and since it is rubberized, it keeps most of the sand out.

Any time i go out to a nasty place i keep my phone in this case inside a zip-lock bag and inside a fairly thick pouch on my body armor. If we go out for a month and my phone breaks on day two then i have to go 28 days without a phone.
Verizon doesnt ship to a sand dune in the desert.

out of curiosity, you say you go out for a month... i assume you mean youre still in the states right?
I am in a unit in the army that tests new equipment. We deploy to white sands missile range for about two months in the summer.
The environment is almost exactly like Iraq and some places in afghanistan so it lets us test our stuff in a real life situation without getting shot at.
What case is that exactly? Where can one be found?
I'll let you know how the Otterbox Commuter is, I just picked one up off of Amazon.
Got a couple of boys in and out of the sandbox myself, would like to know which brand this one is so I can order them.
Thank You and stay safe.

The easiest way to find it is to go into the local verizon store and pay the 29.99.
I bought mine at the Verizon store on fort bliss so it should be easy to find.
I dont remember the brand name so i cant tell you where to look online. If you wanna save the money by ordering online, just go in the store, find the case you want and then search for it online.
BTW, I am going to Afghanistan in August so i'll be able to write something up on the ways to protect your phone.
Thank You, I did find it. No brand name listed but it is listed as a "Shell/Holster Combo".
and btw...if you want a penpal for care packages let me know. stay safe. One of mine will be there as well later this year, the oldest is finally retiring.

The Otterbox seems really steady. I wouldn't suggest it for military use because the case that has been suggested completely covers the screen which would obviously be better. I like it, but it may not be good enough to protect from sand.

Is that an official Verizon case or a knock off? Just wondering I am probably going to buy it either way
its an official vzw case and it is really nice. first case i had on my eris. eventually i did tear it up though getting it hung on things like door jambs and stuff
i have a seidio case now, i swear by it. super nice case.
http://www.seidioonline.com/product-p/bd2-hlcsr3hhrv-gy.htm
i had a otterbox before too, the commuter, didnt like it, IMO had less protection then the seidio and was bulky. also the hard plastic shell had no grip and made it very easy to drop

Otterbox Commuter Case BROKE!!!

My Otterbox Commuter Case broke today. Right on the seam above the volume buttons. Obviously a manufacturer defect, I'll let you know what OtterBox has to say about it.

If they don't replace it, i've got one i'll sell you for cheap. $10+s&h. I have the impact, commuter, and 2 defenders. Don't ask, long story.
I didnt even know Defenders were out. If I end up buying another one that'll be what I buy. Make me a good deal on one of those?
I just got the communicator and I am totally impressed by it. I wish I had this when I bought my Nexus One ... lol.
I hope you get it replaced for free from OtterBox. Good Luck!
are you saying it just broke all on it's own sitting on the table?

Probably putting in and removing it from his pocket.
I carry my phone in my back pocket, so perhaps thats a valid theory. But I believe the way the thing is designed, if you take the case on and off a lot, say to replace/remove the battery frequently, which I do since the battery wont last me a full day, even with SetCPU profiles, it stresses this weak point in the hard shell and will eventually lead to it to breaking. Another bad design and possible cause is that the way it lips over the rubber layer it's possible it got caught on the inside of my back pocket but I never recall feeling it snap or anything. So honestly I dont really know how exactly it broke but I would advise staying away from this particular case. I had the impact case before this and it worked well for just a rubber sleeve. I ordered a Defender case, I'll let you know what I think of it but I already believe I paid too much, even through Buy.com I will say that the Commuter case is still holding up good despite the corner seam issue. BTW Just so everyone knows I'm pretty good with my stuff and I'm not a clutz who drops their phone 20 times a day. Never lost or broken a phone and I didnt start using a case until my iPhone.
Ok no response from Otterbox. I tried calling them originally and it was like 23 people in front of me so maybe they are overwhelmed ATM. Received my Defender case this morning. Wow. Yeah it's twice the money because it IS twice the case. Yeah it's thicker and I REALLY hate thick cases but I don't think I mind this because it feels good in your hand, it comes with a holster which I think is sorta gay but I'm going to give it a go, since I've missed a lot of calls since getting this phone and I'm on call two at a time so it's critical that I hear my phone ring. I used to cary a Nextel Motorola isomething, think military grade phone or what this case gives it a very similar feel. If you work outside at all this case is a must.
So I have a really funny story. I was looking at oyur picture to see where it broke, then I looked at mine, squezzed it a wee bit, and snap, mine breaks just where yours is. Well I guess theres my excuse to buy defender lol.
Mine broke about 2-3 weeks ago, they were very good with sending me a replacement. I received it within a week, US to the UK with priority FedEx.
All they asked for was a few pictures detailing the damage with a piece of paper in the back of it.
I was thoroughly pleased but I did buy the Defender earlier in the week.

With the Otterbox Commuter case, how you take off the hard wrap plastic is key.
Installing: Always put on the volume bar side first
Taking off: Always detach the right side (opposite side of volume bar side) first
I have the defender now, but the commuter is also a fantastic case offering decent protection.

Finally recieved my Noreve case

They threw in the metal clip as it took them an age to get it to me (nearly 4 weeks late) but well worth the wait.
total cost was 55€ delivered, some may say that this is very expensive, but from experiance noreve make the best cases and stand by them.
example was my old archos 5 case broke after two years usage, i contacted them via email and they sent me a replacement no questions asked.
The quality of this case is second to none, it will protect my beloved desire hd for many years if needs must.
the only bugbear is the usb port is inaccessable with the case closed, but this isnt really an issue.
also the case will now STAND up lol
roy
Looks nice for a leather flip case, which I don't particularly like to use myself. Seems very good quality.
Is that metal clip going to scratch your camera lens surround though, Roy?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
just checked and nope it dosent touch the lens or the bezel, it will touch above the bezel if forced due to the length the lens is recessed in the case slightly so it isnt an issue. the are no sharp edges on the clip anyways.
roy
Thanks for the pics and review.
May I ask the vibration strength, I men can you easily feel the ring vibration in your pocket while the phone in this case?

nice question i just tested it, in my jacket pocket - no feeling, in jeans felt the vibrations but not as strong, on the belt clip i could feel it when it touched me, but when not no feelings of the vibration.
This case is for the
HTC desire HD or ace, for some reason a moderator has decided to move it to the wrong forum now
Why the hell are lots of topis are moved?
lol yeah maybe the moderator got drunk and logged on had a bit of fun!
That's a nice case. Looks good for the business type that has a stylish table.
It is a little on the expensive side, but looks durable.
This is a desire HD case not a desire z or g2, it doesn't belong here
i thought i would update this thread.
ive been using this case for over a week now, so far ive dropped my phone twice onto concrete sufaces - both times my heart missed a beat - but my phone came though without a scratch.
ive also managed to throw a cuppa coffee over the phone whilst in its case, i had to take it out quickly and dry it - but without the case it woudl have been dreached, it got a slight splashing and the case needed to be dryed.
To the contary of my earlier statment, ive been having my phone clipped to my breast pocket of my coat and every time its been on vibrate ive felt it though my coat so it dosnt drown out the vibrations to unusable levels even though the belt clip.
Most of all the case is beautiful, ive had lots of people now ask about the case as its so well made.
if i was to change anything it would be a hole for usb slot, and the clip, i would perferre an magentic or button clip, the current fastern uses the top of the phone to clip over, although it hasnt opened it would give me more piece of mind if it has a independant fastener.
roy

ouch that is bad!!, mine took a while - i orded mine at the begininng of november when i knew i was getting the dhd.
that is also the reason why i got to them directly, a couple of years back i had a 2 year old case break, i wrote to them telling them the problem (not actually expecting anything as it was so old by then) and they said no problems your new ones in the post.
The other thing i you can get on to them and in my case (excuse the pun) the sent me a free stainless steel belt clip because of the delay.
keep me posted when it arrives!!
i've received mine 2 weeks ago and it's just perfect. Way way better designed than the case of Proporta. My only negative parts are:
- screw of the back which prevents my DHD laying flat on the table;
- usb port is not good accesible for the usb cable 'cause of the edge of the case
For the rest it's a perfect case!
Wow, that's really nice. not usually a fan of leather cases, though that just lloks great.
Truly epic case... Perfect Quality and a really decent quality/price
What about GPS reception in this case?
Sorry but this case looks like s%^t
On top of that 55 euros ?
No thank you
I've bought quite a few Noreve cases for various handsets, gone off them now and find hard cases like the Case mate Tough case are more durable than leather and makes the phone feel better in your hand rather than constantly having to flip the screen cover over to use the phone on the Noreve.
I guess if that is what you're going for then that's ok.
Seems a bit bulky to me, and protects the phone a little too much. Especially with the screen protection, when you don't really need one for the DHD...
just an update,
after 7 months of ownership my case has developed a problem, the clip that holds the flap closed the leather has seperated leaving a metal piece of sheet metal.
I contacted noreve to see if it can be repaired, they only asked for some pictures and then sent a brand new case!! - for the mean time im supergluing the leather back so my dhd stay protected.
Now thats been 7months of hard useage, there has been no tearing, the leather has aged well but it has worn on the clip which is a shame. But then again i doubt any of the cheap cases on fleabay would have lasted half as long with me - i work in heavy industry so the case gets covered [email protected] then for weekends relaxment we spend half the time at themeparks where the case gets wet and battered about constantly.
payed a premuim price for the case and have recieved a premium service.
I must take my hat of to this company, they responded within hours even at the weekend and deliver on thier promises.
now looking forward to my brand new case to arrive

Otterbox Commuter - phone got run over by a car and survived!

So, long story short...
I was stupid enough to drive off from a parking lot with my phone on top of the roof of the car.
Returned some time later to circle the parking lot, looking for it with no luck. Figured it must have held on through some turns due to the rubber corners, so I left the lot and retraced my route, leading back to a main street. Crawling at 10 mph at 2 o'clock in the morning, I held on to the hope that I would spot it.
Seeing a black object on the side of the road, I pulled over thinking I'd finally found it... only to discover it was someone else's expensive smartphone! As you can see from the pictures below, I think it's a Motorola Droid X with the screen smashed to bits.

Disheartened, but still not giving up, I kept driving. A couple of blocks down, I saw another black object and stopped in the middle of the road. It was the Otterbox's soft inner case... a few feet away from it I found the naked Inspire, and its battery. As you can imagine, I was already quite happy at this point.. but I couldn't see if the phone worked or not without the battery cover. So I made a u-turn, circled around twice, and found my battery cover as well as the Otterbox's outer shell, which was squished on the sides, with some of them flattened.. obviously run over by a car.
Back in the car, I inspected my phone (no scratches on the screen, some scrapes at the corners and around the lens, but all cosmetic), popped the battery in, and it didn't boot. I realized that I'd put the battery in the wrong way, and tried again. White screen, HTC logo, and CM7 boot! My phone had just survived falling from the roof of my car and being run over by another one.
Moral of the story is.. HTC build quality rocks and the Commuter is an awesome case! If it could do this for my phone, the Defender would pretty much render it indestructible.
PS I salvaged the 16gb microsd card from the Motorola and upgraded my 8gb one! Lmao.

Damage Report:
As you can see, the scratched areas are the corners and the lens (only the rim, not the glass!).. which are the only areas the Commuter's hard shell doesn't fully cover.
It seems as if the phone had shed the silicone skin before the corner damage occurred, as the skin seems to be unharmed.. that might have prevented some or most of them.
Not bad! Thanks for sharing because I have been considering that case.
Glad to have gotten the same case and I really do like the case personally the first time I put it on. Thanks for sharing your story mate.

Just got my phone this past Friday and I'm looking into getting accessories for it. Thank you for this post as it helped me decide which case to get now.
It'll be nice if Otter actually have some in stock for people that are looking to buy it.
I think they get new stock every few days. I tried to order a new one the night of the incident with no luck. The next afternoon, they were back in stock and I got my order in.
Sent from a telegraph station somewhere in northern Russia.
Sorry to hear about your accident Pheno.menon but look at the brightside, you have your phone intact with little to no damage.
Wow, good to see the case I bought a week prior to buying my Inspire does its job.
Bite the bullet and buy the Otterbox Commuter everyone, looking at mine now and am more than satisfied by the protection as well & the styling it gives the already beautiful phone.
I'm always in an attempt to keep it that way.
Specs of the case:
I know this is not the streak thread but hey i read them all! I must say the commuter is for real i dropped my streak from over six feet it bounced a couple times then slid on the concrete all i could think was well there went that phone i was sick because some peoples have been broken from way less. Anyway to get to the point no damage at all otterbox commuter a+++++++++++ a must have.

They have them at NewEgg for 19.99
How much bigger does it make your phone? The iphone otter box makes the phone huge.
Riveting tale, chap. The bit with the Droid X was a twist

This thing turns a thin sexi phone into a BEAST. I guess it's all about how you treat your phone... if you're one to drop the phone, yeah, you need this, and it's worth having it turned into a thick beast of a phone for the protection, but if you're careful and not 12 years old, a standard case or no case is just fine.
It never ceases to amaze me that people buy slim\sleek phones, then put a big ol case on it... total waste. If it breaks it breaks. If you're that prone to destroying phones, get insurance. Not worth ruining the aesthetics of the phone.
I'm also baffled as to what would cause a car to run over a phone. I guess the same pool of people as end up on Judge Judy and Jerry Springer.
I think this thread just helped me make my decision on cases!

UN-REVIEW: Poetic Revolution Case

Cards on table: I kinda begged Poetic not to send me this case for review because I am NOT a fan of big, chunky, ‘rugged' cases. Nevertheless, here it is, so here’s my take.
There’s only one reason people buy a case like this: because they’re paranoid to the point of insanity about damaging their phone. Okay, there’s two reasons: the second being they have a weird Rambo fetish going on, and they think cod-military design cues might appeal to a drunk biker chick at three in the morning when her final vestige of self-esteem has been dissolved in half a gallon of Pabst Blue Ribbon. ("Hey, ladies, I’m into using protection if you know what I mean. Hur hur.”)
So, yeah. Protection. And I GUESS this case does that. I mean, it takes about an hour to prise the front and back sections apart, so I can’t see them just popping open post-tumble. And there’s about 37 inches of rubbery TPU swaddling the sides (rough approximation), so it should help your device withstand the occasional gravitational gonking.
But, seriously, I’m not going to put my phone in this case - or any case - then lob in into oblivion, just to test that out. So, frankly, we have no real way of knowing how well it protects a Nexus 6P. What we CAN do, though, is see how well it protects other things, which is what I’ve decided to do today. Pics attached as we go.

So, let’s start with soft fruit - and I’m afraid this one’s a fail. If it’s small enough to fit in the case (sorry, bananas), it’s gonna fall out through the massive great fingerprint sensor hole at the back (no unsquished blueberries for you, pal). There’s a chance you could get a date or two in there, but my local store was fresh out, so… you know, bummer.
Since this case is clearly meant to be carried about your person, I figured it might be useful as a shin-guard for rough-and-tumble sports like football, rugby or synchronized swimming. And, yeah - I think we’re onto something this time, largely because any good shin guard’s gonna be covered up by a whopping great athletic sock (apologies for my decidedly un-sporty orange fellas today). In turn, that means no one’s going to have to look at the sheer aesthetic grotesquery of this case and question whether their eyes are on the blink. Win, win, my friend. Win, win.
Here’s another thought. Maybe this case isn’t meant to provide protection solo? Maybe you’re meant to use it with a suitable peripheral? It’s getting nippy out there as winter starts to bite, so I’m guessing they’ve launched this thing to cash in on burgeoning hand-cream sales. Now, you’re going to struggle to get a tube of cream right into the case, but what you CAN do is use the integrated kickstand to make a neato display stand for your lotion of choice. As a bonus, that means you can leave the cap open without risking any unexpected - and unexplainable - dribblage all over your furniture. CONVENIENT.
Finally, technology’s helped with so many elements of modern life, but the boffins have yet to invent anything that can help us protect our innermost secrets. Well, you know what? Poetic haven’t cracked it either. I can totally see how this case would provide amazing side-protection for your guilt, shame and subterfuge. But that transparent front section is going to give the game away quicker than a drunken Irish boxer in a cheesy movie plot. Shame, really. I could’ve done with a way of hiding the fact that I’m now wearing this case like a codpiece.
AW, MAAAN. DID I ACTUALY TYPE THAT? GUH.
Good un-review!
I actually look for cases like this as I work part time as a railway worker while I'm at uni studying app development.
But I do agree these are not cases for the average user. And I doubt there are many railway workers/construction workers rocking a nexus 6p ?

Haha now there's a under-represented demographic of nexus 6p owners, railway workers.....we could start a very small thread of our own lol

Although you think this case is unpractical and too bulky, it might be what the Nexus 6p actually needs. My 6p is in a standard rubber case from SUPCASE (the one with the clear back on Amazon). One day I dropped the phone no higher than 3ft onto a rubber/fake tile ground. It landed straight on its back and everything looked fine. After taking the case off, I discovered that the top portion of my volume button was indented and the aluminum casing had actually bent outward by the volume button (not too noticeable but it can be seen from looking at the phone from the side). I don't know if it was just my luck or this phone is just way more fragile than I thought it would be. I completely agree with you on the bulkiness of this poetic case, but it seems like anything less won't do its justice in protecting this phone.

I think what many people forget is that phones these days are essentially all in one PC's and I think in general are very well made for what they are.
Obviously a manufacturer has to make a choice between all the demands of the consumer from latest and greatest performance and screen size to slim form factor and premium materials.
What we get in the box is not meant to be ready for every one of life's scenarios, and that is why cases exist, some people demand greater protection to the detriment of form factor and sometimes at the sacrifice of usability.
For every phone I own I usually end up with several cases that I use depending on what I expect from the day ahead of me.
If I'm at University I use a Spigen rugged case to protect from general wear and tear and to offer some protection should I drop the phone.
But I also work on the railways so when I'm out on site I use the poetic revolution case because it's a much more dangerous environment.
And on the days we do concrete pours or extensive excavation work, I take a $30 Nokia phone and leave the nexus at home cus I've seen work mates drop a phone into a 8 metre deep hole that's filling with concrete....and there isn't a case yet that protects a phone from that!
