Soft Brick (?) experience + black screen bootloader - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Recently, I may have just soft bricked my phone. I am not totally sure. I flashed a rom and flashed another mod and the phone is ****ed. Basically, the phone is stuck on boot image like a loop and when I try to enter into the bootloader mode, the screen is totally black and keep rebooting. If someone also encounters similar problem, here is the solution:
1. in loop boot image, hold power button and you will see the 3 buttons at the end of the phone flashing
2. when it restart, immediately push "power button"+"up volume" (it is necessary to hold these two buttons at the same time)
3. it may enter or may not enter into bootloader. I personally tried 20+ time to get into bootloader (my screen is totally black, so I have no idea if I have successfully enter bootloader or not. But, here is a trick. turn on your computer volume. if you have successfully entered the bootloader, you will hear the "usb connection sound") (just for people who are interested, if you enter bootloader with usb connected with your computer, the phone will automatically enter fastboot mode)
4. start command
5. type "adb reboot bootloader" and enter it (if it is not in fastboot mode, command will reply "device not found", then unlucky you, keep trying. Just unplug the usb cable and replug it again and try the command again until it works)
7. if the phone reboots, the phone will reboot into a functional bootloader, then you can enter into recovery mode and restore your backup.
I tried at least 40 times for this to work. the process was painful, but at least it is better than a dead phone.

I just use vol (-) and power, works 100% of the time. Also, adb commands will NEVER work in boot loader.

I heard a nasty rumor that holding volume up button while booting kills it? Urban legend?
Hold volume down and power till the buttons stop flashing. Wait Luke 2 seconds, release power button and keep holding volume down till you get to a white screen with 3 skating droids.

What do you mean "kills it"? I assure you holding volume up and booting is 100% safe.

I believe it is the one s, and maybe one other HTC device, not sure which, but holding vol (+) and power boots them into qshusb mode. On our Evita, if you hold vol (+) throughout boot, it goes tin to safe mode.

A bit harder than on for example the desire. Try holding it down for longer or uncheck quick boot in settings. Only got it to work once, now I usually just adb reboot recovery from command line on PC or use the reboot to recovery option on shutdown menu (Leedroid)
Yeah its abut weird basically switch of phone completely then press power you will feel a vibrate then quickly start holding down vol down button or switch on and keep holding power and volume and release every few secs how I do it hope it helps

You don't really have to hold Power for long. If you hold it for a period of time, you will see the capacitive buttons light up meaning it's going to force a restart. Hold Volume Down the entire time though.

Help getting into the all black screen mode (APX)

Hello everyone, I have tried a number of times last night, to get into APX mode. The forums and other people report that you simply press power and volume up.
I tried power with the volume up, over ten times. The device just reboots normally. I have to add that I have the usb cable connected at all times. Do I have to have the usb cable unplugged initially to get into APX? Also, I am working off of the unbrickable method. The next step is APX, other people who got stuck here, get past it and don't post a solution. Can anyone help me? I am going to finish this up tonight. Thank you

Enter APX
1.To enter APX mode you either have to boot, choose reboot (if available) and hold volume up
pressed until it reboots and then the screen should remain black. Or if that doesn't work, completely
shutdown your tablet and wait a second or two and then hold volume up pressed while pressing
power on and keep it pressed until screen is blank.
or
2. fastboot -i 0x0B05 reboot
or
3. adb reboot
2 and 3 you still hold volume up.
Good Luck!
I will try this when I get home

Thank You, I wil try that when I get home tonight. I know I can get the device in "fastboot" mode so I will just do that and issue the: "fastboot -i 0x0B05 reboot" command and hold the UP volume rocker.
Now that I think of it, I am going to try all methods. I dont have a reboot option after pressing power, just: "Power Off" and "Cancel." I also, never used adb, so I am going to try that out as well.

I just remembered something I had previously forgotten. It has been used with success several times.
With unit powered on and holding up volume press reset with a paperclip.
The reset is located about 25mm (1in) below the sdcard.
Good Luck!

It creates a processor reset while holding up volume should put you into apx.

LOL, I thought you wanted me to test it first, I assumed it was for a reset but with all the back and forth about, brick this and brick that, I want to avoid all bricks by any means necessary. Thats would have made for a less than 30 days old, $300 paperweight.

Don't ever do anything you are not comfortable with as you have to live with the result, not me!
Thanks for the laugh!
I should explain better. There is a reset connection on the processor, the purpose is to cause the processor to do a full restart. I don't have a schematic for this unit but normally one side of the switch goes to the reset pin and the other to ground.
I know this will not make you feel safer but just for info.

Chill out man.
OP, hopefully you have some fastboot/adb experience. You'll have to extract CM ROM, grab the boot.IMG and fastboot it to your device... Then flash ROM in twrp and reboot.
If it bootloops again, try to flash ROM then fastboot.. Different strokes for different folks

People always think there is something wrong with their phone, but almost always its just a matter of not performing the button sequence correctly. The main thing that people don't seem to understand, is that you need to release the power button only, and keep holding volume down until the white bootloader screen comes up. People seem to be releasing both at the same time, which just causes a normal boot.
All I do is hold power for 10-15 seconds and then once the screen goes black I let go and start holding down the volume rocker until it boots into the bootloader. Much simpler in my opinion

can not get in to fastboot on one x

Ok, I have done some looking and have not figured out much yet. I have a one x from AT&T that will not go into fastboot . Pushed the down vol and power, it starts up as normal. There is a pin lock on the screen that the customer forgot the code, so all we need to do is reset the phone to factory. Any other way to do this? I can not access the phones menu to do any thing like turn on debugging to fix it that way. Any help would be great.

There is not button combo that goes directly to fastboot. That button combo gets you into bootloader. Once in bootloader, you can select fastboot.
And if you can't get into booloader, its almost always a matter of you not doing the button combo correctly. Hold both the power button and vol down until the capacitive buttons flash a few times and the screen powers off. While the screen is off, release the power button but not the vol down rocker. Keep holding vol down until the white hboot screen comes up. People often think you are supposed to release both buttons at the same time, which just makes the phone boot normally.
Also this thread belong in Q&A. I've notified the mods to move it.

lol. Don't forget to jump up and down and flap your arms like a chicken. Absolutely necessary.
Seriously, it is confusing because a lot of people will just say "press power and vol down" which really doesn't accurately describe the whole process.
close please, condition green now.

Question on non-removable battery?

Say you get into a bad flash situation/hanging boot screen that just resets upon reboot and cant get to recovery. A battery pull in the past a has allowed subsequent access to recovery. What do you do in the case of a non-removable battery phone? Never had one and have used the batt pull method a lot.
Thanks.

Holding power and volume up until screen goes off and phone vibrates will restart device. Power and volume down will boot into recovery. Try both to become familiar.
Power + Vol Down & Up apparently cuts the power to the battery? Either way if the "cuts power to battery" part is wrong it still cuts it off.

only power + vol up cuts power on the M8, actually.
but yeah, battery pull on the M8 is simply holding power + vol up. Have had to do it dozens of times while hanging at start screens, works fine.
