Help getting into the all black screen mode (APX) - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone, I have tried a number of times last night, to get into APX mode. The forums and other people report that you simply press power and volume up.
I tried power with the volume up, over ten times. The device just reboots normally. I have to add that I have the usb cable connected at all times. Do I have to have the usb cable unplugged initially to get into APX? Also, I am working off of the unbrickable method. The next step is APX, other people who got stuck here, get past it and don't post a solution. Can anyone help me? I am going to finish this up tonight. Thank you

Enter APX
1.To enter APX mode you either have to boot, choose reboot (if available) and hold volume up
pressed until it reboots and then the screen should remain black. Or if that doesn't work, completely
shutdown your tablet and wait a second or two and then hold volume up pressed while pressing
power on and keep it pressed until screen is blank.
or
2. fastboot -i 0x0B05 reboot
or
3. adb reboot
2 and 3 you still hold volume up.
Good Luck!

I will try this when I get home

Thank You, I wil try that when I get home tonight. I know I can get the device in "fastboot" mode so I will just do that and issue the: "fastboot -i 0x0B05 reboot" command and hold the UP volume rocker.
Now that I think of it, I am going to try all methods. I dont have a reboot option after pressing power, just: "Power Off" and "Cancel." I also, never used adb, so I am going to try that out as well.

I just remembered something I had previously forgotten. It has been used with success several times.
With unit powered on and holding up volume press reset with a paperclip.
The reset is located about 25mm (1in) below the sdcard.
Good Luck!

It creates a processor reset while holding up volume should put you into apx.

LOL, I thought you wanted me to test it first, I assumed it was for a reset but with all the back and forth about, brick this and brick that, I want to avoid all bricks by any means necessary. Thats would have made for a less than 30 days old, $300 paperweight.

Don't ever do anything you are not comfortable with as you have to live with the result, not me!
Thanks for the laugh!
I should explain better. There is a reset connection on the processor, the purpose is to cause the processor to do a full restart. I don't have a schematic for this unit but normally one side of the switch goes to the reset pin and the other to ground.
I know this will not make you feel safer but just for info.

[q] help! My phone wont do anything!

hey guys,
my phone litteraly wont do anything. i f*ed up some fonts using type fresh, then tried to restore using the odin3 downloader. i accidentally closed it, and now my phone wont boot up/react to any buttons pressed. any help? thanks guys!
had the same problem. i cant figure out how to even get odin working, it says one click but when i hook up it to odin it gives me a message that still doesnt tell me ****. i had to send my phone back for a new one and told them i used easyroot on the market bc i didnt know what it was and it sounded cool but now i know not to ever do that again that it messd up my phone. Praying to god that they dont charge my for anything
You should still be able to enter bootloader mode by turning phone off and holding down up/down vol and pwr simultaneously until boot screen flashes then release power button only
it wont even do that
open odin (use the stock one click version)
with the phone off (remove/reinsert the battery if need be) and not plugged in; hold vol. down and insert the usb cable (keep holding vol. down untill you see the download screen). this should put you into download mode and if you have the right drivers odin should recognize the phone.
I've stuffed my captivate on a few occasions and so far I have been able to use this method to get into download mode and fix it.
it wont do anything at all. it wont power on, show up in adb, anything... and stupid att wont do ANYTHING -_- oh well. any help would be appreciated!
Have any of you offering support to the OP actually had your phone in the described state? I've read a few posts where the phone is seemingly completely dead as the OP describes and no one says they've successfully recovered from that state. All I ever see is the same old button combinations/battery/usb shenanigans and statements of that should work and that the phone is unbrickable. I have personally seen a device that was behaving in such a manner and no combination of battery pulling, usb plugging, button holding, or tongue twisting would generate anything from the phone. The only thing the phone would do was get hot.
same here. Phone showed bright green screen...wasnt done with teh flash and said it was finished...now the nly thing I can get is power and hold the vlume up for some IRQ and hex stuff. I posted a questionthis morning but...serious. Vol up and down and any things else gives nothign but a black screen..battery out...back in anything..its torched.

Did you read the rest of the posts? The OP already stated several times that the phone does nothing. I realize that most people will say it does nothing or is "bricked" if it simply shows the "connect to computer" screen, but the OP has stated more than once that the phone shows nothing. Yes, everyone is trying to help, but simply repeating what has been said numerous times before doesn't help.
Has anyone actually recovered a phone that displays NOTHING? No logos, no recovery, no nothing.
Last night, i turned off the light in my room when i noticed a glowing from my desk. i walked over, and it turns out my captivate's screen was in fact on, it was just a faint black glow, and none of the power buttons would do anything. when i took the battery out, it shut off completely!
As I pointed out here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=757293
Im pretty sure it was my fault for not completely following instructions on the ext4 one click install root, settings.db etc so everyone needs to make sure if the dev says flash before..do it.
State of the phone was, it would not completely power on..therefor no usb drivers would load and Odin cannot see the phone and it can no longer flash..the only thing I could get it to do was show a screen with that text. I put in my post. I ordered it via letstalk.com so I sent it back and assuming they get the same result Ill have a new one hopefully by the end of the week. Im just glad I stil had my old iphone3 to slap my sim card in.
The odin one click flash thing..it just flaked right at the start it looked like..but I cant be sure because as soon as I saw a blue progress bar I stepped into the kitchen for abtou 30 sec..I came back and the screen was florescent green and Odin said it was done. I knew something was wrong as it was way too fast so I unplugged, removed the battery and set it back in...from there on out it would do nothing with the power button unless on a semi rare occasion if I hit the volume up button and power I got the IRQ stuff.
Annoying as I had a nandroid backup just before I started messing with it.
i just sent mine into samsung... back to mah ol trusty blackjack. gonna have to get used to supermario bros 3 instead of spyro....
ANYWAYS theyre sending me a new one!

Hey thanks, but i already sent it to em... thank you everyone for your help!
Just a note... i said before hold vol down and plug in usb. I had it in a pretty bad state tonight. Played around. Same idea as before, but had to hold vol up and vol down. If i brick a few more times, i'll give a better guide. But this phone can DEFINITELY come back from a state where you can't even get it to power on. Figured any additional info on this would be good.

[Q] Transformer stuck in APX mode. Help!

Hi guy,
i can't turn on my TF. It's full battery. I try press all kind of buttons but still not working. When i plug my TF in my Laptop screen still black but when i press the power button (only power button, not vol-up + power button) for 5s my laptop found a device name "APX". If i press the power button 5s again, it's disconnect from the laptop but after 2s it's auto-connect again as a "APX".
Please help me, this tablet not mine, a friend give it to me to help him install some apps, he'll kill me if he know i killed his TF.
Thanks,
Update: I forgot to tell you guy how i get into this sh*t. Ok, here we go.
Last night, i'm in CWM recovery to flash new ICS ROM. after flash the rom i went to the "Advanced setting" -> "some things about SDcard but i don't remenber what is it". In there i saw many choise like "unmount system, mount cache, mount data, format system, format data, etc." And at the end it's "Back to menu" choise. I choise all the "mount ....." part so it's all changed to "Unmount ......." After that i pull out my microSD (I have no idea why im doing that) When the microSD is pull out, the choise "back to menu" on the list is disappear, so im not able to go back to main menu to reboot. Then i hold the power button to turn it off. After that i press the down volume + power to go to CWM Recovery again, the TF boot up, but this time the TF not show the text say "press volume up in 5s", it show some blue bar running on middle of screen, it happen so quick that i didn't noitice and still hold power when Eeepad logo appear and quickly press volume up (this moment the blue bar appear and running), and screen imidietly go to black since that moment and can't turn on any more.
Step 1: Relax
Step 2: Disconnect from USB
Step 3: Long press the power/lock button for 30 seconds
Step 4: Release the power/lock button
Step 5: Press the power/lock button for 3 seconds and it should power up normally.

Ever since the tegra 2 came out, I've been on and off recieving these permanent apx bootlooped devices from people to fix. So far, I have not been able to find a consistent way to bring them out of permanent apx bootloop. And no, nvflash won't help. Trust me on this.
I'll buy your TF for $100 just to play around with a TF with this condition. Haven't played with a permanent apx bootlooped TF yet. Played with an iconia, gtablet, and a couple other tegra 2 devices with this condition.
Or you could RMA it and see if asus can fix it. Just tell them you woke up one morning and it stopped turning on.

For those unlucky guys (as me ) who also hit the apx boot loop issue: try EasyFlasher.
I tried manually restore my recovery partition and couple of others but was stuck at apx boot loop. Than I found one comment here on forums that suggest use of EasyFlasher. I just give it a try, reflash stock asus and put some recovery on through it and voila, tf101 is unbricked now.

[Q] Phone won't boot into recovery or otherwise

Hi there,
Sorry but I think I finally found the right forum for this and I wanted to take one more stab before kissing this phone goodbye.
I have a Rogers Galaxy SGH-i727R. About three weeks ago, the phone started re-starting on it's own. I though maybe it was a sticky power key and had that replaced. The problem persisted. I then noticed that it was primarily upon receiving text messages that the phone would reboot. So it seemed it was a software issue. I am running the stable build of CM9.
Yesterday the phone rebooted and never got off the angry alien screen. I pulled the battery, charged it etc and still could not get it to fully boot up. I left it for over an hour. I finally decided to call it quits and re-flash the phone. Problem is, it will not boot into recovery at all. When I hold down Vol + - and Power, it jsut goes into a loop of vibrating every three seconds until I let go and then it tries a normal boot again. Once, I briefly got a screen saying I was trying to install custom software and to press volume up to do so, but before I could hit volume up, the phone cycled off.
I should also mention that the four buttons on the bottom of the screen do not work. I accidentally sliced the wires on the side of the phone when opening it up. I use a software button saver widget to access their functions. I wonder if that issue is related....
Thanks for any advice. I would like to get into recovery so I can load a new ROM or a stock ROM.
If you haven't ventured there yet in this forum I'd recommend Vincom's roundup on just about everything http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1652398. I don't know if it will help much in your situation but it's worth a look. Also, you may want to research usb jigs, not sure if they will work with our devices though ... research is the key word.

But if it were a stuck power button it would not stay on the loading screen indefinitely, no? If I hold down the power button while booting, it will turn the phone off.
Hold vol +- and pwr until it vibrates let go of pwr continue to hold vol +-. You were letting go of all of them at once going by your described method.

Force to off and press and hold volume down while it tries to reboot. Timing is everything here so you may need to hold volume down while forcing off with power button and continue to hold volume down.
Otherwise there is a very small hole about 25mm or 1inch below the sdcard. Use a small paper clip and press in gently this creates a forced reset of the processor and will sometimes help. Still no go do the reset again but this time holding volume down.
Press in gently and you will feel the spring collapse; stop there.
This is all I can suggest with your current situation.

APX = volume up
bootloader = volume down
Try again using volume down for bootloader - from the bootloader you can try for recovery or reboot system plus it may give you access to fastboot.

APX appears useless unless you are on ICS or installed Nvflash while on ICS.
I have a thread about getting into the bootloader or apx but with your restrictions we have tried everything that relates.

TWRP seemingly bricked my pixel

So I was trying to make a backup with the latest twrp and I got this error code: createTarFork() process ended with ERROR=255.
I figured, to hell with it I'll reboot. Twrp asked if I wanted to install the twrp app, I said no. Screen goes back, never to turn on again. No button combo holding for any length of time helps. Bummer, right? I was running DU at the time.
Now I'm worried about the RMA, I hope they don't deny me after they get it back into the warehouse.

Does anything happen when you plug the phone into the wall or into the PC?
Have you tried just holding down power for a while?
are you on beta hardware. i noticed today my phone was unresponsive installing twrp it would go black and disconnect from pc. what i had to do to get it to turn back on since it stayed lik that even holding the power button for a while was just hold the volume key and power for a couple min down and power if that dont work try volume up and power just random pushes to get the phone it will go to some debugging screen then just holding buttons till it restarts

I've tried every button combo. Plugged it in to wall overnight and computer. No response. Makes me paranoid about twrp for pixel because I was rebooting from there, but then again it doesn't seem to be a big problem in the community

I thought I was in trouble a couple times. I had to hold volume down and power button for a long time. Finger started to go to sleep

I also had the same situation go on as well. I'm not sure what's is happening but when I boot TWRP the thing just becomes unresponsive and a black screen. I had to hold the buttons for nearly 30 seconds before it worked. Pixel isn't a friendly device to mod. :-/

That's bizarre! I'll try when I get home. I wonder what's causing this. Did it ever happen again to you? And were you using twrp when it happened?

Yes I was using twrp, I was flashing test build. But it put me into a loop. U got a black screen, and if your computer won't even recognize it , you may be out of luck. I have been using rc2 I know it's not great for restoring backups, but it works good for everything else
That is so strange. I have never come across this issue before. Unfortunately, if you can't seem to get your PC to recognize the device, I don't think there's anything you can do. I guess we will have to be wary about using TWRP. I haven't had any weird issues myself with TWRP but I know others have. Here's hoping google will honor your warranty. I think they will, I don't think see them spending the time to look into what caused your phone to die so I think you'll be able to get a replacement without much hassle.
If you wouldn't mind, please keep us updated.
