[Q] horrible battery life? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

hey i just installed the CM10 jellybean nightly a few days ago and have noticed a HUGE decrease in my battery life.. like not just a little worse but dies SUPER fast ever since. prior to this rom i was running cleanrom for the longest time and my battery could last me the whole ride to work and back, while listening to songza and i normally don't touch my phone while im at work maybe a few times to check txt or facebook..
is this just a temporary thing? i've heard that after a week or two the rom "adjusts itself" and battery life should improve..
i really like the rom its super snappy, but if the battery life is always going to be this bad i might just have to go back to a sense rom

You could try calibrating the battery. Or wipe everything and do a fresh install if you didn't yet.

how do u calibrate teh battery?
also.. by wipe everything what do u mean? before installing the rom using TWRP i did factory reset 3 times, cleared cache 3 times and cleared dalvik cache 3 times. would that do the trick, and is there even a point in doing it 3 times? lol

Battery calibration in the app store.
Did you wipe system also? I don't know why they tell us to wipe three times. I just do it just in case.

Don't do "battery calibration." CM10, at the moment, has much worse battery life than Sense based rom. Some things you can do to decrease battery drain during idle is turning off location update/sharing in Maps and facebook notification (if you're using FB).

I have been trying to solve my bad battery life on cm10 7 Nov as well. Am running rohan kernel on power save, but no improvement

basic trouble shooting steps in regards to battery life;
1. Use the app "BATTERY BATTERY STATS" to pinpoint which app or process is using the most power
2. Use the stock kernel and kernel values
3. If all else fails, redownload, rewipe, and reinstall

hmm.. yah i heard your supposed to calibrate the battery when its 100% charged tho. anyways. i switched to the latest AOKP (which i think is based off of CM10 anyways?!) and battery life seems to be way better already. also my microphone works for soundhound which didn't work on the CM10 nightly. also noticed a high pitched noise when i recorded a video on the cm10 but not on the AOKP! woot.. pink unicorns & swagger ftw!

Proper wipe/install procedure for good battery (driver) stats/life

I recall seeing a post within a thread for a kernel or battery life comparison detailing the exact order of ROM/kernel flashing, battery stats wipe, and charging/discharging to get better life. Do you only wipe and flash on a full battery, a dead one, what is it? Does it even matter, and it all evens out over many charge/discharge cycles?
There would seem to be a method that for whatever reason yields the best life.
I did a factory restore made a world of difference for me.

+1 a world of difference
Looking around it seems the best is to wipe battery stats right after flashing a new kernel and only when the battery is at 100%. Letting it run down until shut off and charging it back up a couple of times will give more and more life with each run down. (?)
Will try this.

Do you factory restore before or after flashing a new ROM?
I flashed the stock Gb 233 rooted update a few days ago and had the best battery life I've ever had ... After a whole day I was still at 72% battery at around 7 pm... this was one moderate use but still I had never had that good battery life ever .. ran it a couple days all was great ... Then I started getting crackflasher withdrawals and changed ... all I ddid was a full wipe factory reset, wiped cache, formatted system, wiped dalvick.... fully charged first of course and wiped battery. Stats... hope this helps...

[Q] Battery Reset after each flashing to new rom? If yes, how is it done?

Hi
Am I suppose to RESET the battery (or whatever that procedure is called) after I flash to a new ROM?
If yes - how is it done?
Happy thanksgiving - and I give you my thanks

You should charge your baterry to 100% and then go to cwm>advanced>batter stats wipe or you can download batterycalibration app

I flash different roms all the time and I've never reset my battery stats on this phone and I always get great battery life, easily making it through a day with the stock battery. YMMV but I've never had any issues.

I still think it's a good habit to have because it does happen occasionally and when it does, people complain that the ROM is the cause when in reality some change was made that somehow affects how the battery is read.
I was in the same boat as you, phburks, until I flashed EB 2.4 and I was convinced it was the ROM that was causing intense battery drain because I never had to wipe battery stats before.
You can simply delete the batterystats.bin from /data/system and it's virtually the same thing as using one of those apps from the market.

Should this be done when the battery is at 100%? And should you let it completely drain once after that?

wiping battery stats DOES improve battery life!!

If people have been wondering...
I got a 3800mah sedio extended battery like a month ago and so far its been better then standard, when i got home i had about 20% more battery then before.
I thought i wiped my battery stats with app but now it turns out it didnt, i wiped it using CMW and i can already see the improvment.
Normally when I would use it for about 30 minutes moderate usage i would be down to about 94%... Now i only go down to aboit 97-98%
Wiping battery stats is the quicker alternative to using a ROM for a while.

You need to have CWM installed. Instructions are found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340526
To the OP, I dont think it would actually improve battery life. When I had a Motorola I had this issue all the time. When I would get to 1% it would sit there for hours. I would wipe batter stats and it would be more accurate. Giving you the illusion that its better.
What a bunch of BS. delete this nonsense thread.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
I personally thought wiping battery states just let's your phone know the exact battery level if it got messed up. So in theory you aren't getting more battery its just your phone now knows the right right battery level. Lol

When I started out changing ROMs a few months ago, I used to wipe the battery stats and do the full charge/full drain thing. I've since stopped and can't say that I notice any change in how quickly the initial drain goes back to normal (or even that there is a an "initial" and a "normal").
That all said, if there is, in fact, truth to the idea that the battery drain indicator just needs a while to become accurate on a new ROM, it seems entirely likely that wiping stats and doing a full charge/full drain cycle is really only useful because of the full drain part of it providing the ROM time to calibrate.
I believe it has more to do with the physical battery getting juiced properly when you first get your phone. After that a mod shouldn't need to reflex the battery, but wiping the stats would give you a more accurate percent if it seems off.

Battery life ics

What ics ROM have you guys the best results for battery life? On AOKP, I'm getting like 8 hours with 20% left. I don't use data because it kills the battery fast.

Prepare to be flamed for asking this question. Not sure why, but everyone seems to get their underwear in a bunch when this question is asked. Just a heads up.
Anyway, I had the same problem as you. I had the exact same setup as I did on CM9, but had much worse battery life, even after multiple fresh installs. I also don't have any widgets or many apps that sync very often. It seems that you just have to wait for the OS to "soak in." Make sure that you wait at least 10 minutes before doing anything after you flash the ROM. Just let your phone sit. After that, you can go into settings and tweak the phone. Also, try to go into the power saver settings, and setting sync to turn off after a set amount of time (I put 15 minutes), and for data to either turn off or turn to 2g mode after x amount of time.
Also, I'm sure you know the obvious.. turn off wifi/data/gps/bt/etc. if you're not using it. Set brightness to low or automagical.
I began with ~7 hours of battery life, and got to ~14 hours. Typically I don't have to be on battery power for 14 hours, and I tend to end up having ~35% of battery life after a full day of use.
Well I'm just asking how everybody uses their phone and hoe much they can get with it. Not saying that the battery life just sucks. I'm supportng my battery life with details
And i don't use many widgets either. I took off my live wallpaper too,i waiting to see how that works out

How is your signal where you live? Do you use your phone as a mp3 player? Have you seen this yet?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-T959V/Why_is_media_server_using_my_battery
Not everybody will get the same battery life. If you are getting good battery on another ics rom and not another it is user error. Even if you are getting good life on gb and that kind of life on a ics it is a user error. Next time just flash and dont restore any data at all.
My battery life problems are pretty much not there anymore. I'm running AOKP M6B3, and getting 16 hours with 25% left, mild data usage, Facebook, GMail push, GVoice push, always on 4G and wifi on too.
I think the key was a Heimdall to stock, then to AOKP.
Yep. That's what I've been recommending to people complaining with battery on CM9 and AOKP to do. My battery life is great, and I use GR every time I go to a new build.
Well, to be fair, I went stock to AOKP M6B1, installed apps. Then just did an upgrade flash to B2. But still, much better battery life.

I'm running M6 version/beta 3. Gremlin remover does work but I did not do that I flashed over remics and doing great. I clear the battery stats and use all aokp features such as turn off wifi data when screen is off. I also have auto bright on and screen time out after 15 seconds. You also want to stay away from rebooting to much that will kill the battery and I also heard task killers drain the battery.

Look in your battery stats and see what is draining the battery.
I know there are a few ROMs that have the 'android os' power drain bug. I don't know the cause or whether a solution is being worked on. It seems the core of many of the ROMs are based on the same things. Kernels, modems, etc.
If it's the android os draining your battery start airplane mode, and then turn it off. Everything should go back to normal.... at least for a day or two.
I've run Zeus and JB-paranoid android. both has this issue. When i ran CM9 i didnt seem to have problems.
If it is not an issue for you, then upgrade to the latest build.
The one you are running is almost a month old now, so a lot of development has occured since then, specially at Scott's pace.
I don't guarantee it will solve your issues.. maybe it is one of your apps. But it definitely would not hurt to update, plus i'm pretty sure you will enjoy it

That's a joke right? 1% in 5 hours of standby is great battery life...think of it this way at that rate it would take 500 hours of standby to die...that's 20 days of standby!

Edit...think I might've mis read your reply...is the 1% drain when its running good? And what your complaining about is when it drains faster cause of android os?

Maybe slightly less than 1% per 5 hours. However, it was that good. I mean I got replacement phone week ago. So it is brand new battery.
But I'm still having that problem.. Android OS drains **** tons of battery. If I restart the phone, it solves problem for a day. I wonder if there is any permanent fix...

Any ICS or JB ROMs will use more battery than older builds of android. Its one of the small prices to pay with all the great new features. I carry a charger with me at all times. I'm going to get a larger replacement backup battery and I won't even worry about drainage after that

I do look into my apps and find the application Facebook likes to activate even when I don't open it.
