Making the switch to Tmo - HTC One S

Just ordered 2 one s's for "free" should be here next week. I'm coming from an htc evo 4g on sprint. The evo has a HUGE dev community, but it looks like there is a lot of action in these forums! CM10 official nightlies makes me very happy. Anyways just thought I would say hey and looking forward to trying out the new roms.

Cool, just to let you know we don't have S-OFF, the Evo 4G does as far as I know.
Sent from my locked, tampered ville

Yes the evo does have s-off and as long as I can flash roms I'll be ok till we get s-off on here. I'm guessing twrp is the preferred recovery?

HTC Rep: OTA Gingerbread by end of the month

Hey guys, not sure if this is already common knowledge or not, but our HTC rep stopped in today and said that the Inspire 4g was going to be getting Gingerbread OTA in the next couple of weeks. She seemed pretty keen on this stuff as she herself was running a rooted Inspire 4g and complimented my Evo running a Shift port.
Anyways, have fun in Inspire land!
Sweet! I hope she is right.
I hope so too, my fiance has a stock Inspire 4G and I'd love to see that with Gingerbread. The rep seemed pretty up on new tech.
..
The Gingerbread OTA for the EVO that was released today has been rooted all ready....... So I don't see a problem with a locked bootloader.

Was it rooted before it was put on the phone or after the ota update was on the phone. Because its easy to root a rom when its not on the phone, but its hard to s off a phone that has a locked bootloader.

Thats the rooted rom from the update. What worries us is if some one does the ota update and is now stuck with a locked bootloader and no way to s-off. Which could happen on the inspire.

So similar to the way Apple operates? Shouldn't we always have the ability to flash signed roms/ radios like we do now?

Werent we all stuck with locked bootloaders when we bought our phones? And arent we all running rooted with s-off now??
That makes absolutley no difference. If the update comes, and the bootloader is replaced in the process with a signed one(I know they said they wouldn't, I haven't read about the evo update, but usually a locked bootloader is no big deal, a signed one is- if there's people making a big deal about it I'm assuming its signed)
then there's a good possibility you can never really flash a rom/kernel again, unless the bootloader is cracked. If anyone thinks that deb's will always get around this, look at the atrix. Ya it may get cracked eventually, could be years though.

Technically, no.Some devs put FOTA KILL in the roms to disable the service responsible for OTA's so the devices cannot receive them.

Well I am wishing that HTC will stand behind what they said about not locking bootloaders. I hope...... that they had the OTA in the hands of Sprint way before they made that statement.

Paul is in the game!

Hey guys,
Paul O'Brien just tweeted that he received his sensation this morning! That's awesome.
Also, HTC sent him a s-off version!
That should give a massive boost to sensation development.
This is really great, really gives HTC extra points if they give such a big handover to community. That´s the spirit, give an unlocked phone to such a dev.
Just wishing they would do the same for Cyanogen...
I can't wait to see what he has in store! This phone has so much potential once they get it unlocked, it's crazy!
This is wonderful, damn I'm looking forward to see him doing his magic!
HTC shud send him device with S-ON so he can figure out how to S-OFF it.
If he already hv S-OFF device, nothing much todo then
Let's see how fast he roots..... He's usually pretty quick. Go Paul go!
He's running on 1.34.401.1 - new ROM version
I did ask if he was ENG S-OFF or SHIP S-OFF but he didn't reply

Thanks! I noticed this forum is buzzing with excitement, compared to the myTouch 3G Slide forums.
Which version of HTC Sense should I go with after I S-OFF? I like Sense 4.0, which my brother has on his One S, but Sense 3.6 has also caught my eye.
Sense 4 isnt perfectly functional but unless you use BT alot it doesn't matter.I'd go for S4 personally (Although im on MIUI at the minute as the battery life is far better than any sense variant)
I don't actually have a Bluetooth. I mostly like eye candy. I like aosp, I'm a man of bells and whistles. I like to be able to show my friends the advanced graphics and such.

Most definitely S-off, with S-off you have full read write permissions for all partitions. With HT Dev unlock you only have read write permissions for your System, Boot, and Recovery partitions. Plus you have to flash the boot.img for each ROM you want to use manually via fastboot command or use Smartflash in 4EXT.
Sorry but I do not know about Darktremor.

rogers one X n00b help thread

Hi Guys!
Just wanted to introduce myself and ask a bunch of n00bish questions.
I recently acquired an HTC One X on Rogers for dirt cheap (basically $0) and this is my first Android phone having used an iPhone for the past few years. I'm not completely lost around ROMs having cut my teeth on windows mobile phones right here on xda-devs years ago but my iPhone took me away for a number of years.
I've gone through as much of the existing FAQs and help threads as I could but I have a few questions I couldn't find the answers for: Hopefully these are simple enough for the folks here!
1) My HOX out of the box is running FW version 1.73, Android 4.0.3. I see there's some bootloader unlocking issues with AT&T HOX's with FW 1.85 and 2.2 and above. Do these restrictions not apply to the Rogers HOX? Is there a point i should be worried about not having an unlockable bootloader?
2) My ultimate goal is to get a maintainable ROM where I can easily get OS updates without having to manually reload any custom settings or apps. Being an Android n00b, I consistently hear about Cyanogenmod ROMs. Can I jump from my current Stock ROM straight to Cyanogenmod 10.1 JB? or do I have to do something in between?
3) Are there other community ROMs that's better for the HOX than CM? I'm looking for a plain jane out of box experience. I really love how the iPhone works really really great out of the box without any huge amount of setting changes. And that's what I strived for with my old windows mobile device ROMs.
4) Yay or Nay on HTC Sense?
5) Yay or Nay on Staying on the Stock Rogers ROMs (I think the JB update is available now).
6) If I elect to do all the OTA updates, is there something I should avoid like a permanent locked bootloader version or something like that?
7) If I install all the OTA updates and eventually end up on the Rogers JB rom (I assume it's a bunch of incremental updates since auto updates shows I have update 1.93 which isn't the JB rom), can I revert back to the 4.0.3 rom?
I think that's it for now... Sorry for the long list. it definitely grew as I typed it!
Thanks a tonne! I know how great a resource xda-devs was and is. Can't wait to get into all of this again. !

apologies for my probing questions as I'm trying to flesh out the dependencies of everything...
Does the rogers HOX need to be s-off'd when flashing custom ROMs.
How do OTA updates work? Do they only apply to a certain kind of stock ROMs? Do custom ROMs have OTA updates?
thanks,
Depending on hboot yes s-off is preferred because it makes flashing easier. You will not have to flash boot image seperately. Some custom roms have ota built in so that you are notified of a new version. Once you start the unlock process it is wise to never take an ota update for stock Rom. Aosp such as Avatar and Sense based Viperxl both can be ota updated. There are more. It will usaully state these capabilities on the page.

When you say I shouldn't take an OTA update after unlocking the bootloader, why is that?
Let's say I unlock the bootloader, but keep the stock rogers ROM and OTA update it. These are just OS updates right? they shouldn't touch the bootloader or do they?
Also, if the Rogers Bootloader is not locked down, then do I even need to unlock it? or do you guys mean it's unlockABLE and still needs to be unlocked?
Does rooting also make a device not OTA'able?
Finally, how are the bootloaders tied to the FW version and to the OS version? Coming from an iPhone, there was the baseband/Radio FW and OS versions, and sometimes a specific hardware version, but that's it. what's the heirarchy for the bootloader and the FW, and the OS?
finally, if there's a good resource that answers a lot of these "android rom 101" questions, please send along a link. I know you guys are busy!
Thanks!

Thanks venomtester, I was just on those pages when I went to check for your reply.. =)
For a general question to the Rogers HOX folks...
just wanted to confirm the following workflow:
1) unlock my rogers HOX with htcdev unlock process
2) get root by running superboot r2
2) run facepalm to s-off my HOX
4) pick a ROM and flash!
That sound about right? I'm not missing anything obvious? I'm not entirely sure if the tools like superboot r2 and facepalm have been superceded by other tools. Especially with all the AT&T specific processes...
This certainly is a few more steps than I'm used to from my Windows Mobile days... =)
Thanks again,

Step 2 should be flash TWRP 2.3.x.x no need for superboot r2?... not sure what that is.
And you'll need to flash a rooted rom before S-OFF or let TWRP root your rom if your hboot is under 2.14

Not sure why anyone is suprised. Those of us with the M7 knew this month's ago. For the first day after the M7 was released you could use HTC DEV unlock then VZ made HTC lock that down for the M7.
I too hoped maybe VZ had not gotten to HTC yet for the M8 so I tried but no luck. Will need to wait for rumrunner or firewater to be updated to support the M8. It may take a while....

Yes sir. Rumrunner gave you S-Off which is "Signature Off". Once that is set, you can flash custom recoveries and then custom rom's. It took months for the team to get this working and I know it did not work on 4.4.2. I think we are in for a long wait. If you bought this hoping you could get custom rom's you might want to reconsdier. If you like the phone and can live with it stock for a few months, it's a great device.
The M7 was the best phone I ever had and I swap phones a lot.
